I remember the ''Naughty but nice'' cream cakes ads. This was in an era of mass marketing of milk, lamb, beef, meat, and cheese. Wouldn't get such ads today.
Great selection of ads, it’s funny that you never see adverts for flour anymore. I love spotting a Tom Baker voiceover in the wild like in the Sainsbury’s advert. Sultanas never sounded more appealing!
It’s years since I even thought about one of the Bob Carolgees Hellman’s ads - really pleased to see it here. And those Hovis ads were great - more commercials should contain the phrase, “fair jiggered” 😁
I’ve been watching your vids for a while now (love ‘em by the way, and love sharing them with the fam & friends)… I have only just noticed the flux capacitor at the bottom right of the TV, nice touch 👌😎
Great collection again Steve! Who would have been behind the 'British Meat' ads? I remember back in the 80's some consortium or other would advertise 'Butter' with a 'Welcome back to Butter ad'. Don't see these so much now. The 80's and 90's seem to have been full of adverts for 'ready meals' and 'convenience food'. I guess it was because of the new uptake in Microwaves and such. Not really needed now as nearly everyone has one. And of course, some of the ads on here wouldn't be allowed now lol. Oh and my profile has some old ads in there, the quality is only 240p though. But, if you see anything on there to put in your own video's, I have no objections, I mean it's not like they were mine really in the first place 😂
There were a few generic products they used to advertise, like 'Milk'. That one was done quite a bit. Weird now, when you think of it. And thanks for the offer. If you're really into vintage TV, I've featured a small collection of other vintage TV youtubers that I like on my channel page.
That Chris Langham Bird's Eye Steakhouse ad, has definitely not aged well! 🤭 Frankie Boyle from Mock The Week, "Scenes We'd Like To See"....."Chris Langham....This Is Your Life" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A Pot Noodle is alright nowadays. But back in the day when it was full of e numbers. They tasted GREAT. They actually gave you some sauce in the packet then aswell. So you didn't have to put your own in. Out of the cupboard.
7:18 - Sounds like the Crisp N Dry jingle was re-dubbed to change "codpiece" to "codFEESH". Because "Mama likes a nice codpiece" means something very rude indeed.
Still sounds like “codpiece” to me - the end certainly sounds unusually long, like it’s being pronounced with extra esses, but I can clearly hear the “p” in piece.
This has finally put some much needed context on why my late Grandmother had the seemingly odd habit of mispronouncing the name of a certain American fast food chain as *McDougles* ... 🍔🍰🤣 And let that be a note to our present selves: If using personal references around your grandkids, _do_ please take a moment to fill them in on anything which might be before their time! 👍 (P.S: If anybody happens to have the telephone number for the gentleman in the _Too Good to be True_ ad... 😍🏳🌈😉)
Play the game of "what wouldn't be allowed now"; Vitalite I suspect, and Confederate flags, even though they don't have quite the same resonance as in the US, would also be decidedly frowned upon I expect
And the jam jar golly. I think that Robertsons ad must have been broadcast in the transitional period between overt racism, and feeling a bit awkward but still racist.
Findus French Bread Pizzas are pretty rotten, and yet… I see that advert and I really, really want one! Stupid brain! What’s most striking to me about this compilation in particular is the variety. Maybe I’m wrong (as I don’t watch TV nowadays), but it feels like there’s a very limited number of products or, most of the ads, services that get advertised now, but in the past it seemed worthwhile to advertise anything and everything.
@@RetroSteveUK You may be right, though that does feel a little counterintuitive - you’d think with a captive audience and relatively little time (only two channels with ads pre-C5, as Sky and cable were quite niche until the 2000s) that there would be a premium and only the biggest brands could afford it, yet it seems like the opposite happened. Tis a puzzlement 😄
I still have blisters from those pizza breads!
Isn't that Carole Parkinson (the receptionist from The Brittas Empire) in "Slam in the Lamb"?
Talk about a double nostalgia whammy!
Arabella Weir.
Take me back ! I can’t articulate how much I miss those days 😢
Dear God 90% of these i know off by heart and it feels like it was yesterday
Yep! Funny how this stuff lives in our brains for years.
@@RetroSteveUK Mamma likes a nice cod piece, thar doesn't swim in grease...
Mamma likes a nice rump steak without no oil slick
I was thinking that. They knew how to get in your head back in the 80s eh?
Weren’t old ads brilliant! So many jingles and really entertaining!
Puts today’s ads to shame
More imaginative too.
9:43 & 11:17 They weren't prepared for that!

Im from the US, but, i love watching these vintage British adverts!! Thank you❤❤❤❤

I just keep thinking of Little Britain whenever I hear him doing a voiceover.
Another great collection, thanks Steve. I spotted Kevin the Teenagers mum as the Findus Lasagne woman. Loved the VG prices
I've heard Kevin's dad doing voice-overs in a few old ads, as well.
It’s years since I even thought about one of the Bob Carolgees Hellman’s ads - really pleased to see it here. And those Hovis ads were great - more commercials should contain the phrase, “fair jiggered” 😁
Pop tarts. Literally hotter than the sun!
Tongue destroyers.

Oooh I remember that crisp n’ dry ad! Classic 😅
That's definitely one of my memorable ones, too.
Whenever I see that in the shops I always think "with crisp n dry the food stays crisp n dry" 😂
10:25 - Panflair - Voiceover by Angus Deayton.
What film/tv did he do btw?
That Chris Langham Bird's Eye Steakhouse ad, has definitely not aged well! 🤭
Frankie Boyle from Mock The Week, "Scenes We'd Like To See"....."Chris Langham....This Is Your Life" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
when my pal moved into his bed sit he had a vitalite tube and KFC spork as his plate and cutlery , he had a pot noddle pot as his beer glass !!!
Echo margarine,,,,where did that disappear to? I had a crush on Pam Ayres❤. Tom Baker narrating the Sainsbury's ad!
Those prices at VG 😂 it will have tasted a lot better as well
Bloody hell pop tarts I had forgotten all about them lol
So hot, they're cool. Apparently.
Uh oh…. is that Chris Langham at 8:12? ☹️
Yip. Amazing to see that it wasn’t the confederate flags that was the most offensive thing it that advert.
A snobby kid like that would get a lot more that they wouldn't expect than just having to wash dishes in the US. LOL

I think it has to do with there only being 3 or 4 channels back then. Millions of people all watching at the same time.
