I remember the Torkelsons and Almost Home, particularly their respective theme songs. Those were the days. I also loved Good & Evil. I hate that it was cut short because it had so much potential.
In Australia, we had a show called "Sons & Daughters", but it wasn't this show. It was an Australian made long-running soap opera in the 80s (one of our first soapies) which was like our version of "Dynasty" or "Dallas". It lasted far longer than the American sitcom (which was never shown here).
I understand the allure of legacy families like Ball/Arnaz, but someone should've intervened before allowing that horrifying display of nepotist malpractice abusng my eyes
Please keep in mind that I was 9/10 in 91... 1. I loved The Torkelsons. 2. I remember Babytalk... but I only ended up seeing a few episodes for some reason.
@@RosieYogi40 I would have been 10 or older. I didn't watch a lot of TV at the time...I was a big outdoor fan...yet for me to have so much memory of a show but not to remember the actual show is a bit odd.
Matt LeBlanc auditioned for a friend of mines movie in early 1993. He was the friendliest and most confident of any of the dozens of actors who came in. Didn’t choose him as we were looking for a real teenager - maybe a mistake in hindsight but might have led to him not doing Friends. The producers of Friends said they didn’t know why the studio forced LeBlanc on them - without mentioning his popularity from the earlier shows.
Out of that audition Gary Graham was also not chosen (for another role), nor was Clint Howard though both were great - several other later known actors as well. I didn’t have any voice in this.
'Home Improvement' and 'Step by Step' were the hits if the 90s. I didnt know anyone who didnt watch those shows, especially the show, 'Harry and the Hendersons'.
I remember I loved step by step, but its been so long since I watched it, I couldn't even tell you what its about. I remember the theme song clearly though
The Torkelsons was a great show. As a kid I remember pulling for them, when dying they’d get the big break they needed….which is silly cause they were rich compared to my family 😂😂😂
I was a huge fan of Married with Children so I definitely remember Top Of The Heap. I don't remember Baby Talk but I do remember Julia Duffy from Newheart she went on to replace Delta Burke on Designing Women but that didn't work because most didn't like her character she left after one season.
Bad luck for Julia after her long run on "Newhart". Two series in a row that didn't work out for her. Still not sure why she was written off "Designing Women" after one season. Was it her or the producers? She's had a pretty active career since then. I liked her recurring role on "Reba" years later.
@@Heartboy1031 Julia Duffy is great so I'm guessing it was more the producers fault. There was a lot of tension on the set of Designing Women. Delta Burke left the show and since she was the breakout star that became more difficult to find a great replacement. Duffy was good but it was like The Golden Palace aka Golden Girls with no Bea Arthur. Of course I could be completely wrong about it.
What he said is historically inaccurate and doesn’t make sense! The one spin off alone for Married With Children discussed here never would’ve taken any of the original cast members at all. Just like Golden Girls spin off Empty Nest. It only would’ve enhanced the show if anything. Cause it would’ve merged the characters together every now and then. The originality of Married With Children premise never would’ve changed.
I'd like to watch a video about failed tv shows with great theme music. Theme songs that were very catchy and would've been memorable if the show was successful.
I have to admit, I not only watched Top Of The Heap, but still have a few episodes on Betamax (if anyone remembers what a betamax is, it was obsolete even at the time I recorded those episodes. Still works, though).
I loved the Torkelsons. My favorite Mother Daughter Country Music Duo The Judds. Wynonna is the daughter and the Lead Singer and Naomi the mother and the Backup/Harmony Singer. Sadly Naomi committed suicide due to Mental Illness last year (2022).
I remember watching Almost home. Rachel Duncan who played MarySue was a cute little girl. I liked Almost Home. I am aware that Lee Noris was Minkus on Boy Meets World. Also, Jason Marsden was on Boy Meets World as well and then switched to Step By Step.
don't forget his buffy years man that whole cast from beginning to the 6th season deserve awards and wealth even though i hated that they made buffy have a sister.
Seth Green was in a zillion things in the mid 80's to the 90's. I liked him in "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987 movie) "Life Goes On" (TV Series) and of course "Buffy" in the late 90's to early 2000's.
Was I the only person who liked Top of the Heap? Even though I was just a kid at the time, I felt like it duplicated the humor of Married with Children reasonably well.
Having been a 90s kid, the only show I remember from this list is The Torkelsons/Almost Home. Loved the show. And honestly I had a crush on Olivia Burnette. I remember Dorothy Jane being a sweet, down-to-earth girl and I think that added to ny crush.
For some reason I remembered a TV show version of "Look Who's Talking" - I must have watched or seen the promos for "Baby Talk." "Sons and Daughters" looks familiar, but I probably only saw the promos.
Baby Talk was from my understanding, a very troubled production from the get go. For one thing, Connie Sellecca (you know from The Greatest American Hero and Hotel) was originally supposed to play the mother role that Julia Duffy and subsequently, Mary Page Keller ultimately played. For whatever the reasons, Sellecca abruptly departed from the series after shooting the pilot. Sellecca would later claim that she was fired and would sue ABC for more than $1.5 million.
I don't remember a single one of these lol. Then again I was 10 in 1991 so I was hardly paying attention to these types of shows back then. Even still, you'd think I'd at least HEAR of them. It's interesting to hear that some of these failed shows had some pretty big stars in them...guess everybody has to start somewhere. Interesting to know that these were all in a single year?? Wow...that's impressive.
The failed 90's shows that broke my heart were really good IMHO. They were Sleepwalkers, Nightmare Cafe, Adventures of Brisco County Jr, The Watcher, and Eerie, Indiana.
The weird thing about Eerie Indiana is that aired when Omri Katz was an adult, but the show was produced when he was a child. So after Omri Katz became famous for Hocus Pocus, it was strange seeing him as a kid in a show, especially because i could swear that show never aired before the 90s
@@keithtorgersen9664 Omri Katz was 15 when Eerie, Indiana aired in 1991. I remember watching it when it first aired. It lasted only one season. It wasn't until years later - in the mid 90's that the reruns finally started catching the public's attention. Damn shame. Was one of the best shows ever. It was basically the pre-Stranger Things.
I remember some of these shows. There was a show in the early 90’s that I remember loving. I think it was called small wonder. It ran for 1 season and it was about a girl who was a robot and lived with a family. Anyone remember that?
I remember the Torkelsons when it made its rounds on the Disney Channel. I noticed Mr. Hodges, the boarder that they took in was not mentioned when said show was covered earlier.
One of my favorite short-lived shows from 1991 was The 100 Lives of Black Jack Savage. It was a comedy adventure series about a con artist who meets the ghost of a 17th-century pirate, and the two of them have to work together to save 100 lives in order to avoid eternal damnation in hell. It looks like it only lasted seven episodes, but the little kid in me loved watching it.
Great video, I liked and subscribed. As someone born in 83, this brought back some memories. I was a fan of The Torkelsons, it’s nice to see the series get talked about 30 years later. Keep up the good work with these videos 👍
I had to smile when you talked about the star of “Palace Guard” having played Eden on “Santa Barbara.” “Santa Barbara” was one of my mom’s favorite soaps, and when I came down with the mumps as a kid, I remember camping out on the couch, watching it with my mom, and thinking, “Eden is a really pretty name.” Fast-forward a few decades…and my Eden is now 20 years old. Her middle name is my late mother’s.
In Australia, the sitcom Baby Talk aired during the summer non-ratings period. This used to be a time when many failed television shows were used to fill schedules.
I was asked to take a friend's place for their weekly trivia game at the local bar and although I had never played trivia before and didn't necessarily do that well my answer to the final question gave us the win. I don't recall the exact question but it was in regards to Top Of The Heap 😅😊 I believe they wanted to know what sitcom it originated from and I believe they gave us the name of the kid from Friends. We were the only team that got it right. Oddly enough, that is the only show on your list that I remember and actually watched. Great video bro
@@TheReviewStudios Flesh and blood I remember because even as a kid im a diehard Stephen King fan and the actor who played the dad in "Firestarter" was the lead and nbc hyped it up in trailers that "The lead in Firestarter is in a new show coming to NBC"
This seems like the best place to ask. I have been trying to remember a CBS show from anywhere between 88-92. It was about three different couples who lived in different levels of a house. Seems like the owners were the older couple on the first floor, a couple on the middle floor and newlyweds who move into the top floor during the pilot. It was a sitcom but seems like there those Full House style moments where the characters got dramatic for a bit with lessons or advice. And I feel like the new bride was Julia Campbell but I don’t see anything like this in her IMDb so maybe just an actress who looked similar. Any idea what show I am talking about?
And I think I just figured it out. If I am right it was a show called Married People from 1990. Just found one episode uploaded to UA-cam. It was their Halloween episode. The actress I was thinking of was Megan Gallivan
It’s funny how these one off shows stick in your mind forever. Like I think I’m the only one who remembers that Ironsides reboot with Isaiah Washington a few years ago that bounced after an episode or two.
I loved The Torkelson's. I would watch Soap as well. Ahead of it's time in my opinion. I think I was too young, but I caught a lot of things. It would be nice to watch it again now, but not if it drops off into the abyss!
Aye i watched all seasons of Home Improvement and man that show was pure funny and really good character development atleast within the boys and jil tim is litetthe same character from the first ep to the last 😂😂 the ending was heartwarming also and also love your channel❤
I was too young to know any of these shows but sons and daughters just jogged my memory of a TV show called Sisters that my mother used to watch. My father watched a TV show called the Untouchables years later. I used to watch it too I didn't understand what was going on and why they would shoot and kill one another. I remember an opening episode a man was shot and laid in a large pool of blood. I also remember I liked the music on one episode that had Benny Goodman Orchestra sing sing sing playing.
Lol john Travolta's speaking role for baby talk was clearly done over a at&t telephone line, you can hear the line compression when hes starts to talk lol
Grew up in the 90s. Never heard of Step by Step. The 'southern accents' on the Torklesons was comical at best. For some reason people not from the south think a southern accent sounds like a debutante from south carolina (Scarlett O'Hara). That's not what you would hear in a small town in OK
I liked Princesses (Fran Dresher pre Nanny) with also Twiggy and J. Haggerty. This had some promise, and it was funny and likable (well, to me). I also liked My life and times. Recently, HBO showed a British mini series called Years and years that was sort of similar
I don’t remember the show but I’d love to know more about the supposed backstage drama. I general I like Julie Haggerty but when the narrator implied people didn’t get along, my first thought was that Haggerty was the problem. Then he said she walked off after 4 shows 😂😂😂

I remember the Torkelsons and Almost Home, particularly their respective theme songs. Those were the days. I also loved Good & Evil. I hate that it was cut short because it had so much potential.
I used to watch The Torkelsons. I loved it as a kid. I don't remember the others.
Almost Home sounds more like Who's The Boss than The Nanny.
The Nanny is basically who’s the boss too

Loved this video. I hope to see more videos on failed 80s and 90s tv shows from you!
More to come soon, thanks for watching
In Australia, we had a show called "Sons & Daughters", but it wasn't this show. It was an Australian made long-running soap opera in the 80s (one of our first soapies) which was like our version of "Dynasty" or "Dallas".
It lasted far longer than the American sitcom (which was never shown here).
I saw that one while researching
Least it wasn't Fathers and Sons.
I watched from beginning to end last year 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ Australian ONE ONLY!!...
I remember watching The Torkelsons. I remember the theme song and the talking babies from Babytalk but nothing else.
@@Devnet94same… I was about 6/7
@@RosieYogi40 I would have been 10 or older. I didn't watch a lot of TV at the time...I was a big outdoor fan...yet for me to have so much memory of a show but not to remember the actual show is a bit odd.
You just know a show is truly esoteric when even Amazon doesn’t have DVDs of it for sale.
This goes for some movies as well. It’s like they almost don’t exist.
One animated example is the legend of Minky Momo.

Matt LeBlanc auditioned for a friend of mines movie in early 1993. He was the friendliest and most confident of any of the dozens of actors who came in. Didn’t choose him as we were looking for a real teenager - maybe a mistake in hindsight but might have led to him not doing Friends. The producers of Friends said they didn’t know why the studio forced LeBlanc on them - without mentioning his popularity from the earlier shows.
such a cool little story, thanks
Out of that audition Gary Graham was also not chosen (for another role), nor was Clint Howard though both were great - several other later known actors as well. I didn’t have any voice in this.
Then he'll go for round 2 with joey.
Still failed.
Poor Matt just not good at having a

Two late 1980s/early 1990s TV shows I really wish had been able to continue were the TV series of The Outsiders and Party of Five.
I loved party of five!
'Home Improvement' and 'Step by Step' were the hits if the 90s. I didnt know anyone who didnt watch those shows, especially the show, 'Harry and the Hendersons'.
Oddity Archive discussed the Harry and the Hendersons Sitcom in 2021.

Nice to know the TV writers 30 years ago had no clue either
The Torkelsons was a great show. As a kid I remember pulling for them, when dying they’d get the big break they needed….which is silly cause they were rich compared to my family 😂😂😂
I remember Baby Talk. I liked it but I was 6 years old.
7:00 same Mark Thompson who did various presenter and voiceover bits for misc Fox shows in 90s/00s (when animals attack, busted on job, etc) ?
I was a huge fan of Married with Children so I definitely remember Top Of The Heap. I don't remember Baby Talk but I do remember Julia Duffy from Newheart she went on to replace Delta Burke on Designing Women but that didn't work because most didn't like her character she left after one season.
Baby talk is basically a look who's talking knockoff
Seconded.
I add my voice to that idea!
I have to admit, I not only watched Top Of The Heap, but still have a few episodes on Betamax (if anyone remembers what a betamax is, it was obsolete even at the time I recorded those episodes. Still works, though).
Nice
I liked your comment for the fact that you have a functioning Betamax.
I loved The Torkelsons and still think about that show from time to time.
I remember Baby Talk very well. I definitely watched that on the regular. Wasn't it part of the TGIF lineup?
I remember watching Almost home. Rachel Duncan who played MarySue was a cute little girl. I liked Almost Home. I am aware that Lee Noris was Minkus on Boy Meets World. Also, Jason Marsden was on Boy Meets World as well and then switched to Step By Step.
Brittany Murphy was on almost home
Your video epitomizes sheer brilliance! -- "Each conquered challenge propels you forward on the road to success.."
Love that!
I absolutely loved the Torklesons and Torklesons Almost Home!!
If any show runs 5 years or longer, that is still good. Stars often like to move on.
Seeing Seth Green in that Teri Garr clip made me realize that he has probably seen alot of stuff throughout hislife/career.
If anyone deserves wealth its Seth Green
Man's put real time in down in the failed sitcom trenches of childhood and made it
don't forget his buffy years man that whole cast from beginning to the 6th season deserve awards and wealth even though i hated that they made buffy have a sister.
He was also in Radio Days
Seth Green was in a zillion things in the mid 80's to the 90's. I liked him in "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987 movie) "Life Goes On" (TV Series) and of course "Buffy" in the late 90's to early 2000's.
He was also a frequent guest star on Epstein Island
Lee Norris, from “The Torkelsons” went on to play ‘Minkus’ for several episodes of “Boy Meets World”;
Also Mouth on One Tree Hill!!
Wasn't Lee Norris also in the movie "Little Giants" with Rick Moranis?
I named my dog Minkus after him. He was the best baby

I absolutely lovedddd the torkelsons. Brings back so many fond memories as a kid with my brother's and sisters.
Was I the only person who liked Top of the Heap? Even though I was just a kid at the time, I felt like it duplicated the humor of Married with Children reasonably well.
Could have really been great if given the chance to develop.
I didn't like it, but I probably watched every episode on TV during its run. At this time, I was only watching shows on FOX.
I just remember watching Married With Children and thinking WTF is this?
I don't think I ever saw it during its own actual run.
I remember it having some funny moments.
Pre-teen me loved it at the time. I was bummed when it didn't come back for a second season. Adult me thinks it doesn't hold up.
Sons and Daughters is a successful Australian series. Why did a lot of these shows premises seem to reappear decades later in slightly altered form?
Well I'm scarred for life seeing it on my screen just now, the pain and loss of what I once was long before clicking on this video is indescribable
Thank you for getting me out of 2023 for a half hour.. soo nice to see all of this! ❤
Our pleasure!
Having been a 90s kid, the only show I remember from this list is The Torkelsons/Almost Home. Loved the show. And honestly I had a crush on Olivia Burnette. I remember Dorothy Jane being a sweet, down-to-earth girl and I think that added to ny crush.
I remember George Clooney in the “first” E/R, the early ‘80s comedy starring Elliott Gould.
I was just sitting here wondering if I imagined it because no one ever mentions it.
He was also in the facts of life.
As the repair man.
…and Roseanne, but, mostly importantly, The Return of the Killer Tomatoes! 😂😂😂
Now he's doing coffee commercials.
For some reason I remembered a TV show version of "Look Who's Talking" - I must have watched or seen the promos for "Baby Talk." "Sons and Daughters" looks familiar, but I probably only saw the promos.
The Torkelson's mother played in Hope Floats as Bobbi-Claire Patterson. It took my a while to figure out where I had hear that voice before.
Crazy

I don't remember a single one of these lol. Then again I was 10 in 1991 so I was hardly paying attention to these types of shows back then. Even still, you'd think I'd at least HEAR of them. It's interesting to hear that some of these failed shows had some pretty big stars in them...guess everybody has to start somewhere. Interesting to know that these were all in a single year?? Wow...that's impressive.
For my vintage TV ad hunters: what magazine did that Torkelsons ad which appears at 3:12 come from? Thanks in advance!
I loved EERIE INDIANA
Yes! One of my favorite shows of all time! Earie Indiana!
I own eerie Indiana on DVD lol was such a great show.
For years, I genuinely thought my father and I were the only people in the world who even remembered The Adventures of Mark and Brian.

I remember some of these shows. There was a show in the early 90’s that I remember loving. I think it was called small wonder. It ran for 1 season and it was about a girl who was a robot and lived with a family. Anyone remember that?
Small Wonder ran in the 80s and had four seasons (I think)

I remember watching it. Though, I think it was one of those shows I watched, but never really liked.
I remember the Torkelsons when it made its rounds on the Disney Channel. I noticed Mr. Hodges, the boarder that they took in was not mentioned when said show was covered earlier.
Wow, this is sad. Top of the Heap is the Only one I remember.
The spin-off of Married with Children.
Someone else has mentioned that one before I need to check it out
Great video, I liked and subscribed. As someone born in 83, this brought back some memories. I was a fan of The Torkelsons, it’s nice to see the series get talked about 30 years later. Keep up the good work with these videos 👍
Thank you very much!. I was born in 80, so I can relate
I loved the torklesons and wondered what ever happened to it!! Thanks

Another forgotten but good show is the show called due south was one of my favorite shows growing up
In Australia, the sitcom Baby Talk aired during the summer non-ratings period.
Flesh and blood I remember because even as a kid im a diehard Stephen King fan and the actor who played the dad in "Firestarter" was the lead and nbc hyped it up in trailers that "The lead in Firestarter is in a new show coming to NBC"
"The National Federation of the Blind didn't see the humour in it"... Okay I laughed..
I loved The Torkelson's. I would watch Soap as well. Ahead of it's time in my opinion. I think I was too young, but I caught a lot of things. It would be nice to watch it again now, but not if it drops off into the abyss!
I remember "Top of the Heap!" I miss shameless crossovers.

I just bought “Soap” on DVD a few weeks ago. The only show in this list I ever heard of/watched is “Baby Talk.”
I LOVED Sisters!
The untouchables was about the squad that took down al Capone and the chi town mafia
I loved the Torkelsons , I grew up in the 90's..I miss Those shows and Little wonder .. too!

Grew up in the 90s. Never heard of Step by Step. The 'southern accents' on the Torklesons was comical at best. For some reason people not from the south think a southern accent sounds like a debutante from south carolina (Scarlett O'Hara). That's not what you would hear in a small town in OK
I actually got a good laugh from this, so true thanks
I watched Step by Step a few times. Years later, I was in Europe…and its repeats were shown on TV there!

What would a real southern accent sound like? I can only think of Whitley from 'A Different World.'
I watched The Torkelsons back when it was new, but never heard of Almost Home.
