I have the same issue with my 2005 Prius. The first part is Okay. I can start the car. The second step for the remote key doesn't seem to work for me. I hear the door lock working at the very last step before pressing the lock and unlock button (at the same time) on the old and new key. But when I press lock/unlock on the new key nothing happens. Any idea why? I did it many time.
I don't know. I've never tried it with a used one. Intuitively though you would think it should work because it would be like syncing your Bluetooth headset to your phone. I would call the dealer and ask them the question. Tell them a relative gave you one of there old one from a car they no longer own and you want to know if it will work for your car. They'll probably try to get you to go in and pay them to do it but if they can do it it should be doable. The good thing is if it's through eBay, you have 45 days to return it. You just let them know it didn't work and they have to give you your money back
oscarkarem I thought about asking the dealer but of course they're going to say no because they want to sell me a new one... I was wondering how much you paid for your new key and where is a good place to buy it?
In the comments I out the instructions. Print them out and follow that way. I don't know why it is doing that for you, but following the typed instructions may render a different outcome. Good luck
I was able to reprogram smart key (chrome logo) from a different Prius (same year/2004) the ignition did in fact reprogram but the door locks would not reprogram. A forum comment said that if a smart key was reprogrammed too many times this may happen. Perhaps a brand new/never programed smart key would accept both functions TBD. In the end, this means I have to use a metal key in the locks to get in the car then insert the smart key into the dash (or trigger the under dash button/no dash smart key insertion required) to "Run" the car. Note: two out of three key shops failed to properly cut (replicate) the blank key. They would always cut it too small. Hint: let them source the key's or buy a several cheap blanks off of Ebay.
Thank you for this! I ordered one from Amazon and I look forward to get it programmed. Mines does not have the silver logo on the back of the key fob. I assume the silver logo one is for the premium line of Prii
I have never had that problem. I guess if you buy a car but it does not have keys at a good deal. Anyway, the way I would approach it is one of two ways. 1) Go to the dealer, they should be able to get you a key via VIN. Or 2) if you have AAA insurance, I would call them, tell them you cant find your keys. If you have a premium account, they give you $150 towards a locksmith. if you don't have one, upgrade, it is less than 150. AAA may not be as cheap as if you had an old key, but it will be way cheaper than the Dealer will charge. good luck, Let me know if you get this fixed. I never thought of this situation so it will be interesting to know a solution for the future.
It's a little bit quirky. The first round on my 2004, the dash light never stopped flashing. I tried various things to make it stop, but finally just started over from the top, and it worked, the light stopped blinking and went off after 1 minute. Then on Step 2, I did that one twice also. The second time it took, but it was kind of delayed. The new fob seemed to have to think about it for a while. I pressed on the two buttons for a few seconds, nothing. Then I did that again, still nothing. Then some seconds later, the doors locked and unlocked, and it all worked.
That is very interesting. Glad it worked out at the end. I know I was relieved when I realized I did not have to pay $200 to have the lock smith to do it. Quick tip. I found out yesterday that if you have AAA, call them and ask them for the locksmith they use to program FOBs, if you needed it. Tell them you have questions about the FOB. Then call them, and they will be able to charge the trip charge to your house (usually $100) and then they will charge you $20 per key to cut little key on the side. Anyway, glad it worked
I am not sure. If your old FOB works this way by manufacturing design, You may need to go to a Toyota dealer to find out if your car is capable of the features you need/want. If it is just broken bottoms on your existing FOB, you may need the assistance of a locksmith if these instructions are not working for you. Someone I know actually used their AAA membership to have a locksmith called out and it paid for a large part of their locksmith cost to program the key correctly. Good luck
One hour later - another post from L. Lewis. SUCCESS! We got the fob key to be programmed - start engine & lock/unlock doors. After 6 tries. Towards the end of this journey I programmed an old Prius key, the remains of a totaled car, o lock/unlock OK. Don't know if successfully programming that old key made any difference to programming a brand new key (?)
Hi Larry. Did you mean you used an old key of another written off prius key and programmed it successfully? As I have an old key of a written off prius.
@@danielchan5341 Hello Daniel, This all occurred several years ago-but memory tells me the reprogramming of the old key was successful. I believe the remote-door function did not work - a physical key was needed - and I believe the key had to physically be put into the key slot rather than start the car remotely. Dealers will tell you a key already programmed from a different Prius cannot be reprogrammed. This is only partly true. Good luck. Larry
Followed the procedure, and everything worked to a T, except the final step on the new key fob for the keyless entry. Thought I got a great deal on Ebay, but did not realize it was an aftermarket key fob not made by Toyota. I'm afraid that may be the problem.
STEP 2 - This will program the fob’s keyless entry function This procedure (steps 1. through 13.) is for black logo key fobs and vehicles without SKS functionality 1. Open the driver door with no fob in slot and the doors unlocked. 2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice within 5 seconds. 3. Close and open driver door twice. 4. Insert and remove old fob once. 5. Close and open driver door twice again. 6. Insert old fob in slot and close door. 7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off. 8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. 9. Car should lock and unlock doors twice to verify it is in add mode. 10. Press and hold both buttons on new fob simultaneously for a second and a half. 11. Within 3 seconds, press just the lock button on new fob. 12. Car should respond with one quick lock/unlock to verify that the new fob is all set. If the car responds with two lock/unlocks, that means it didn't work. Either try again, your fob is bad or, you have too many fobs assigned to the car. 13. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door or put fob in the slot.
@@JapRapNipHop420 Wow! How the world's changed since I was worried about that! I got a genuine Toyota fob and tried again, but in the end, I had to swallow hard and pay a locksmith.
It may have been my instructions. At the time of this video upload, there was not much out there The information was available, but in fragments here and there. I had to do a lot of research to get what I put together and the last part was not very clear to me either. IF you look at the "show more" notes, you can copy and past the text to a document and print it out. There are a few ways to do the last part. One way worked for me, the other worked for my sisters car (two different years). Good luck
@@pluggy86 One way to save on locksmith in the future, is if you have a AAA road hazard membership. You can call them in to key your car. The membership is $50 for the year, and they will give you $100 towards a locksmith. Sorry I was not able to help you more.
if you scroll down on my notes for the video, you will see a link to Amazon.com. this is where I bought mine from. cope and paste step-by-step instructions to a Word document and print them. Hope this helps

So I want to tell people a personal story that may impact you. Here it is. I had one key for my Prius. The casing (i.e. the plastic part) was falling apart. So I ordered a replacement case and switched out the electronics. Fairly simple…. except one BIG mistake. Buried inside the key housing is this little, flat, almost triangle computer chip. It is called the RFID chip. Apparently, this is a very common mistake. The upside is, without the RFID chip, you aren’t able to 1) Use the key while inserted into the slot 2) Program any other key So, if you have a set of keys that allows you keyless entry but doesn’t work when put in the slot, you are very likely missing the RFID chip. The fix? You HAVE to a dealer/locksmith. So…. try to not lose your RFID chip and/or let it break.
Thank you so much 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I can make new key start my car car Even i can not manage to make the central lock work (will try later again) But this clip is really helpful.
if you look at my notes on the video, you can highlight copy and paste the instructions to a Word document. print it out and it should walk you through it
Yes. But the FOB controls are different. one is Chrome logo and when is Black logo. I don't remember which is which but one of them allows for push button start and the other one does not.
Got it! I bought the chrome logo one (link below) and it worked great! Push start was a success! Thanks so much for your help! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089KNGNQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Getting the new key fob to start key worked, but programming the new key fob didn't work im assuming the reason is due to the original key fob not working (water damage from long time ago). Any ideas how I can program the new key fob to lock and unlock doors?
Only the first step worked? but you have the remote that lets you do both? ( silver has the SKS feature (key-less entry) and the other one does not.). Look at my notes and I have a step by step. Also on one of the comments, there is a guy who said it did not work for him 100% so he posted the steps that did. Good luck
You should be able to just make sure you get the right FOB. there are two types. Silver logo on the back has the SKS feature (key-less entry) and the other (not silver logo) one does not. Good Luck
I was thinking about your challenge. I think I understand it a little better now. To program it you need to push buttons on the existing. If you have a spare, use that to program the new one. If you do not, I suggest you get a AAA membership. They pay 200.00 towards a locksmith. If you buy the FOB, they will be able to program it. Maybe they may even cover the majority of the cost and provide the FOB and program it. I have never though about that, but it is 200 towards the price of a lock smith. The other option is that if you can press the buttons, but they do not respond, then the buttons may be dirty. If you can open the case and clean the rubber contacts with rubbing alcohol, and the circuit board contacts with a pencil eraser and then alcohol, you may be able to fix this. I have done this to my TV remotes, and the functionality, I am assuming, is no different are at least similar enough. I have never opened a Prius FOB before, and looking at mine at a glance, I don't see how I would do that. However, it has to be possible since Amazon sells the shells for under 15.00. My suggestion to you is that if you are going to replace it anyway and throw this one out. See if you can clean it and use your spare for now. If you do not have a spare, then buy the new FOB first, program it, using spare or AAA, once the replacement works, then try to crack this one open and see if it can be cleaned. I wish I could be more help Good Luck
I have only done FOB's with key-less entry but I remember that when I first started playing with it, I was able to get the FOB to work, and could not get the key-less to work. that being the case, I think it may work. If you go through the steps, and don't have key-less feature, then everything else should work except the feature you don't have. Sorry i don't know for sure, but if it does work, please let me know in case someone else asks in the future. Good Luck
How long does it take to program the new key qhen the red car icon is flashing? The video says 5minutes but other videos say 1 minute my light never stays on before flashing after I do the 5 I sent of original key and open close door 6x. Beentrying all mor ing can't seem to get key to program
I have never had that situation happen to me. There was a situation with my sister's Prius that took a little longer for some reason. So, I guess there are exceptions. If you look at my notes, under show more, I wrote down every step I took to program mine. Because I did not experience your situation, I can not speak to you. However, if you are having problems I suggest calling a local dealer and asking. If they do not help, then I say have AAA call a locksmith and program it for you. I believe it is a huge discount from a normal locksmith fee, and it is still cheaper than the dealer . Sorry I could not help much, Good luck
I don’t know how to answer that. I know for me I needed one FOB to be able to program the secondary one. If you have one, you can buy another blank one and you should be able to program one with this. but if you do not have an original I don’t know if this will work.
How can I add my key if it does the unlock and lock cycle twice! I know my fob isn’t defective so I think there’s too many fobs assigned to my car do you know anything about that?
I do not know the answer. My suggestion would be to call a dealer ask if there a limit. They should know. if they don't would say I share your car with other family members and want to make a key for each one. What is the limit. If they think there is a sale opportunity, they will give you a number if there is one.
there is a limit, its on the owners manual pg34-35 wireless remote control . Smart entry Prius only allows for 5 keys assigned, and the regular one 4 keys assigned.
Look at the notes below the video. I documented the process. Print it out and try doing it with the paper in hand. Unfortunately I am not an expert, but I had a hard time figuring this out and though I would make it easier for others.
look at the comments. I detailed the steps. Print it out and see if it helps you more than the video. The other possibility is that the remote may be damaged. I have done these many times, but with full clarity, it has only been models 2004-2009. If this is a different year, I don't know if anything may have changed. Good Luck
@@Theoneandonlyearthhuman sounds like the battery is fine if the light works. I dont remember my light staying on when I did it. But I would have to got through the steps to really be sure. Did this FOB work in another car of the same model and year before you got it? or is it a new purchase? for example, I got mine new at amazon.
@@Theoneandonlyearthhuman new is good. my suggestion would be to print out the comment instructions and follow them at your place so you are at your own pace to verify each step as it is completed. You also have the video to compare to. If you keep running into the same challenge, you may need to have a locksmith come out and program for you. If you have AAA I believe it is covered, but verify with them.
When I locked my car and left, the red key programming dash light started to flash. I think I need to cancel this before I can duplicate key. Do you know how to do it please?
No, for me, when I messed up, I just started over and it worked fine. Look at the comment section, copy the instructions to a doc and print them. That way every step is separated into a new line. Good luck
Daniel, I've never had this problem. But I know that if you hold the power button down for about a minute the car will turn off if for some reason you can't turn it off. I suggest this because the only time you can't pull the key out is if the car is on. Sorry I couldn't be more help

To change the battery slide the pin at the end and pull out the key. Then with one hand push in the pin that normally holds the key in place and slide off the cover. Remove the 4 little Philips screws, replace the battery (for me it is a 2032 coin battery). Reassemble in reverse and your done

After I pull out original - No solid red light. I put in NEW, but only keeps blinking o
In the comments I out the instructions. Print them out and follow that way. I don't know why it is doing that for you, but following the typed instructions may render a different outcome. Good luck
can you reprogram the key from another prius or does it have to be a new toyota key?
I think you can reprogram any key. Never tried it though. Don't see why it would not work.
I think, not sure though, that silver has the SKS feature (key-less entry) and the other one does not.
As far as I know. Mine is the smart access and has a silver logo.
Good luck
@@oscarkarem Yeah, my mom has that model, mine was just the basic one. I managed to get it working.
@@ErickMartinSucre that's great to hear! Have a great day.
What if u don’t have old key?
Trying on my 2005. Step 1- light also does not stop blinking.
Ok, what if your old FOB only can start the car and nothing else? My lock/unlock buttons don't work on my old FOB.
Towards the end of this journey I programmed an old Prius key, the remains of a totaled car,
o lock/unlock OK.
Don't know if successfully programming that old key made any difference to programming a brand new key (?)
Hi Larry. Did you mean you used an old key of another written off prius key and programmed it successfully? As I have an old key of a written off prius.
@@danielchan5341 Hello Daniel,
This all occurred several years ago-but memory tells me
the reprogramming of the old key was successful. I believe
the remote-door function did not work - a physical key was needed -
and I believe the key had to physically be put into the key slot
rather than start the car remotely.
Dealers will tell you a key already programmed from a different Prius
cannot be reprogrammed. This is only partly true. Good luck.
Larry
Thank you!
Followed the procedure, and everything worked to a T, except the final step on the new key fob for the keyless entry. Thought I got a great deal on Ebay, but did not realize it was an aftermarket key fob not made by Toyota. I'm afraid that may be the problem.
Total fail. I bought the black logo key. Learning all the time. That's being returned to seller. I'm not seeing any OEM fobs for less than $165.
STEP 2 - This will program the fob’s keyless entry function
This procedure (steps 1. through 13.) is for black logo key fobs and vehicles without SKS functionality
Hi Oscar: Can you recommend a reputable online merchant to buy a spare Prius key? thanks Dan
if you scroll down on my notes for the video, you will see a link to Amazon.com. this is where I bought mine from. cope and paste step-by-step instructions to a Word document and print them. Hope this helps
What about the prius 2011 fob?
Anyone help please. I can get it to go to the stage where it locks unlocks after I pull the old fob out. But then, pressing lock unlock on new fob does nothing. Mine is a black logo key.Any ideas?
I have a japan prius 2004. can't door lock, it is not working. Help me?
I don't know if there is a difference, but this has worked for me flawlessly. Look at the notes below the video. I documented the process. Print it out and try doing it with the paper in hand. Unfortunately I am not an expert, but I had a hard time figuring this out and though I would make it easier for others.
does this work on used keys?
It has worked on any key i have used. Don't know if there is an unregistration process to clear old registrations.
How can I get the written instructions. Too many steps.
if you look at my notes below the video, you will see steps are written down. select all, right click, copy, and paste to a word document or word pad. then print out.
thanks yes I followed your instruction, I did it. I got new key..
good to hear.
The upside is, without the RFID chip, you aren’t able to
1) Use the key while inserted into the slot
2) Program any other key
So, if you have a set of keys that allows you keyless entry but doesn’t work when put in the slot, you are very likely missing the RFID chip. The fix? You HAVE to a dealer/locksmith. So…. try to not lose your RFID chip and/or let it break.
Thank you so much 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I can make new key start my car car
Even i can not manage to make the central lock work (will try later again)
But this clip is really helpful.
if you look at my notes on the video, you can highlight copy and paste the instructions to a Word document. print it out and it should walk you through it
Will this also enable the car to push start without having the key in the ignition?
Yes. But the FOB controls are different. one is Chrome logo and when is Black logo. I don't remember which is which but one of them allows for push button start and the other one does not.
Got it! I bought the chrome logo one (link below) and it worked great! Push start was a success! Thanks so much for your help!

duh
Getting the new key fob to start key worked, but programming the new key fob didn't work im assuming the reason is due to the original key fob not working (water damage from long time ago). Any ideas how I can program the new key fob to lock and unlock doors?
took a few times but worked. Only need first steo for simple transponder spare key
Only the first step worked? but you have the remote that lets you do both? ( silver has the SKS feature (key-less entry) and the other one does not.). Look at my notes and I have a step by step. Also on one of the comments, there is a guy who said it did not work for him 100% so he posted the steps that did.
Good luck
Hello in my original key those lock and unlock buttons are not working so can I programm a new key with smart lock unlock buttons?
I wish I could be more help
Good Luck
Hi there
can I do only part 2 for my old key fob?
my Prius is running but i dint have key less entry!
Good Luck
Sorry for the late reply. I don't see why not. So long as you have the feature/capability on your remote and car.
Will this work if you only have one key? I dont have the spare fob key.
Smart entry Prius only allows for 5 keys assigned, and the regular one 4 keys assigned.
hi i need some help my fob dont open the door i try mane time?
Look at the notes below the video. I documented the process. Print it out and try doing it with the paper in hand. Unfortunately I am not an expert, but I had a hard time figuring this out and though I would make it easier for others.
Not working
look at the comments. I detailed the steps. Print it out and see if it helps you more than the video. The other possibility is that the remote may be damaged. I have done these many times, but with full clarity, it has only been models 2004-2009. If this is a different year, I don't know if anything may have changed.
Good Luck

How do you get the key out if its stuck
Daniel, I've never had this problem. But I know that if you hold the power button down for about a minute the car will turn off if for some reason you can't turn it off. I suggest this because the only time you can't pull the key out is if the car is on. Sorry I couldn't be more help

How to change battery in pris
To change the battery slide the pin at the end and pull out the key. Then with one hand push in the pin that normally holds the key in place and slide off the cover. Remove the 4 little Philips screws, replace the battery (for me it is a 2032 coin battery). Reassemble in reverse and your done
