Thanks!, i was getting frustrated with new fob not working in my 2004 Prius… it would open & lock doors but wouldn’t work in the ignition slot … then i realized what looks to be a magnet in the old case…transfered it - (as i realized your video shows- when i watched it again 😳) as in your video i did break the old fob case…lol , but once the magnet was in the new fob case along with the circuit board and battery - works like a champ …
You forgot to mention two things: 1. You need to replace the little white rubber "bracket" that sits on a "pin" near the middle button, seen @ 3:44 from old shell into new; 2. the indicator light on new shell shines thru a hole , it's not covered, not waterproof. So you should do something about it!
Very helpful. thanks. 1. What is that white bracket on a pin for? What am I missing out on by not having it? I must have lost that the first time I switched key fobs. (Now on my third.) 2. I plugged the indicator hole with a dab of super glue gel.
@@BobStein think the little white tab has something to do with not accidentally locking or unlocking the car ….. not sure how inportant it is….i saw mine… after the fact …(3rd time opening the fob 😳) and just transfered it to the new one….no biggie …..😎
I just used your tutorial to change out my broken key cover. You did an excellent job in the step by step explanation .Thank you so much for saving some real dough and making my remote look like new for under $15.
3:07 the step I needed most was "some persuasion off camera." Sad emoji. The verbal clues were helpful but it would have been better to see the pry point. What worked for me, especially on the old unit, was putting a *utility knife* into the seam at the corner to get a slight gap. Then a *jeweler's flat screwdriver* into the gap. Another tip, the holes in the old unit allowed the circuit board to accumulate dirt. I cleaned it with *contact cleaner* and a toothbrush.
Thanks for this detailed video. I’ve gone for years with my fob buttons being broken, only the unlocked button worked(barely). I recently lost all functions to my fob because of water damage and was afraid the circuit was the issue. After prying it open, placing a new battery and transferring circuit to new cover, all buttons work like a charm. I got sooooo excited when I was able to lock my doors from outside of the car🥳. You’re awesome 😊
Thank you for this video; my key fob swap took closer to 4 hours. Most of that was cutting/chiseling/dissolving plastic around the transponder chip (seen at 4:19). The old fob was very worn, and it was harder to open than expected; I cleaned up the corrosion, but the transponder chip seemed epoxied in place as no seam was visible and the top did not appear matte but the same as the surrounding plastic. I took my chances and guessed where it was and spent a lot of time removing plastic around where it should be. Did a lot of scoring and chipping away, also used acetone to soften the plastic a bit. I eventually got the chip out without damage and the transplant worked. Also, there was no white chip (seen at 3:30 labeled 485-0 W 6 N), but that may be because this Prius is a base model.
Thanks Vlad --Instructions were great. Appreciated @3:43 you did a nice 'show' of the wall thickness, to help my confidence using my dremmel with cutoff disk to cut/melt to a depth along the sides before 'cracking open the case'. Thanks @ImmigrantUI on the rubber "bracket" that sits on a "pin" near the middle button and the small hole comments. For the small hole on front face for LED (mentioned by @ImmigrantUS in comments below and visible @7:14 ) that looks like a way for water to get in.. So I searched the junk drawer and found some 'clear' Shoe Goo and put a dab inside the case before I reassembled. Fingers crossed that it will be good enough. Don't forget the little gasket on the battery - mine was stuck to the 'old cover', but once I figured that out - EZ to swap over to the new remote. Also helpful tip -- if the slide to get the back off is being a pain and not quite opening all the way to let you tug on it... here's a clue: \ once you start sliding the top, notice that there is a small 'hole' in the slide. a small screwdriver fits nice in there to give you leverage to get it 'fully open' so you can slide easier. I used a small screwdriver on the top and on the bottom seam and then it 'moved'.
Good video -- thanks! BTW, that label on the inside of the original case can be removed and placed on the new case. I slid a pen knife carefully under the edge and worked it slowly under the label. The adhesive was still good, so I placed it on the new case. I don't know if it matters, but it's there regardless.
Very helpful, and very simple. Thanks. Simple doesn't mean easy. Seems the old fob was glued together. It was more difficult to get things apart than I thought they should be. Especially the chip. I had to break things apart to get at it. But it seems fine. Glad to have the new fob working.
Thanks for posting this video. I realized watching yours that I forgot to remove the irregular shaped proximity sensor chip which is necessary to actually start the vehicle! No wonder why it was not working earlier. It is located in such a place that without prior instruction one could easy miss it.
Very helpful video. The trick is to pry the old shell apart. I appreciate your devotees advice about using a utility knife. Another possibility is to use a tool to position snap rings; you squeeze the the tines open, just the opposite of pliers. I'll try tomorrow. And, again thanks.
Bought a 2007 Prius about a year ago and my key is completely ruined absolutely no cover on the buttons and just in bad conditions. I've been holding off getting a new one cause I've heard it costs a lot of money and I really didnt want to spend 300 dollars on a key. Idk why I didnt search this up earlier! I needed to replace my battery and stumbled upon this video and I couldn't be more excited to change the shell cover today! Update just finished! Beware of the circuit my hands were shaking the entire time, it was probably the hardest part. Besides that everything works great couldn't be happier ☺
I was pull a part. Manage upto some extent but after removing the battery, I am unable to split into two. Can you explain me pls. looks like it's sealed.
I appreciated the detail in your instructions. Wondering which way to put the circuit board into the fob shell, your comment that the white rectangles on the board need to line up with the lock and unlock and horn beeping images. That’s all I needed! Thank you.
Super helpful video! Thank you! It was helpful that I watched a different video first, and that person ended up ruining the little circuit board when they pried it out, so I knew to be super careful. Your instructions are perfect and a link to the item is really great. We now have a new key!
Yep, that little chip you transferred over is he RFID chip that is needed for the vehicle to start when inserted into ignition slot. Definitely don’t forget to swap that over.
Heads up it looks like they also sell waterproof covers for these gen 2 prius key fobs. I saw one for 7 bucks it might be worth it to get that as well when I order my key shell. Thanks for this video. It will hopefully save me 200 bucks from the dealership
Hi ! Wonderful job! I have a question, I bought a 2007 Prius touring, so it has a keyless stuff, and it’s not working, do you have any idea? What I can look? Or if a have to reprogram this feature? Thank you!
Are you talking about just sliding the top cover off to get to the battery, or, it works for getting the circuit board out as well? I'm wondering if it can be opened without damaging it, as I already have an original case and want to transfer the circuit board from a different one into it.
he said in the video that he has to use a screwdriver because the plastic nub that you catch your fingernail onto broke off. same thing happened to mine and it's a major pain to get the key out. i carry a pocket knife around to get mine out, but hopefully the new case i ordered solves that problem. :/
A few comments. 1) I got the same case from AliExpress shipped to CA in less than a week for a couple bucks. 2) mine is a not "smart" Prius key so the circuit board doesn't have the big white chip but works 3) I also transfered the small white bridge under unlock buttons, I think it gives it more stricture 4) my old fob was really stuck but I ran an exacto knife around the edges along where the two clamshells meet and it pryed open way easier
4:34 - That chip is what allows you to start the car with the fob in the slot next to the shifter even if the battery in the fob dies. Thanks for the helpful video
Yes, very important to move the chip over. The paired chip alone will allow the car to start if the fob circuit board or fob battery fails. To test chip, tape chip to a small finger and stick your finger in the dash slot. Car will start if you press power button (with other hand).
Thank you for the instructions. I bought the kit from Amazon but it came without any instructions. I was afraid to damage the circuit board and your video was very helpful. My original case was much worse than yours. 😊
That was stressful thank fully you explained very well. Remote still doe not work to unlock doors I think the button are too worn down but the fib works to start the car so ill make an extra key instead.
The COLOR of the Toyota logo indicates what type of entry system your car has. To use the auto-open function, your key needs to have the silver logo. If you get a replacement key and code it, it must also be silver to use the auto open function. The black logo is on the keys that don't have this function. Also, the original keys are GLUED together, and won't go back together after snapping them open, unless you also glue them. The generic replacements just snap open and shut.
This is a very good video, but IRL I could not separate halves of the old case, at least with an amount of force that wouldn't damage innards ("some persuasion off-camera" at 3:07).
II used a q-tip soaked in denatured ethanol around the perimeter of the seal, and then popped it open easily by jamming the lever side of nail clippers down the key holder side. Easy Peasy.
Great video vlad. 1 question if you don't mind. Once I get the replacement and replace the whole thing how will I go about cutting the the new emergency key to my prius car door? Where do I go to do that?
I got a replacement made today at Ace Hardware, but, it's a separate one, not the one that slides into the fob. Maybe they could use the blank that came with the case instead? It was $4.
I think the slot uses the irregular shaped part that needs to be transferred in addition to the circuit board. Not sure exactly what that is. I guess it's called a proximity sensor. It works by plugging it in the dash, even if the battery is dead, or the circuit board isn't working. My sister ran hers through the wash. None of the buttons work, but, it will still start the car if plugged into the dash. Problem is, that was her only key, and I think you need to have the circuit board working in order to make another one without having to reprogram the car itself which is even more expensive. I ordered a case and I'm hoping that I can get the circuit board working. Probably, its ruined.
I bought a shell on ebay for my 2008 Prius. I changed the shell quite easily. The only caution I would add is that there are components on the edge of the bottom side of the PCB. These might get damaged when prying the PCB up out of the old shell. I did not notice the chip in the "nose" of the FOB and this is needed to start the car. Mine did not work until I watched this video. I put the chip from the old FOB into the new FOB and my Prius starts now with the new FOB. Thank you and good video!
that little chip that was removed is very important, without that your fob will not work when you insert the fob into the car. it will not turn the car on when inserted
The chip is used to turn on the car. The reason I know it is because i forgot to move the chip to the new replacement case and then I couldn’t turn on the car after unlocking it. Lol Things work out fine after moving to the new one.

I think that means the green circuit board isn't working. I think it uses the other black part that looks like a magnet when you plug it in the dash. That will work even if the battery in the fob is dead.

How do you take apart the two halfes of the shall? Exactly the part you edited out of the video.
You need to glue it otherwise it fall apart after one good drop
What does the red button do that doesnt exist on the original cover?
Thank you. But sadly i was too late and the motherboard was wet. So need to get another
Damn my new blueprint of a case doesnt have place for a chip. what do i do?

that little chip that was removed is very important, without that your fob will not work when you insert the fob into the car. it will not turn the car on when inserted
I can't get the backing off and my nub is not broken it just won't come off. Help please
The chip is used to turn on the car. The reason I know it is because i forgot to move the chip to the new replacement case and then I couldn’t turn on the car after unlocking it. Lol
Things work out fine after moving to the new one.
Those are JIS type screws not Phillips. Get a JIS screwdriver kit and you will thank me. I was unable to use the old screws- different sizes. The ceramic block is numbered and is likely an RFID. There is a white little brace behind the unlock button - be sure to transfer that. I used a dremel to get the pc board out.
Had to break my original case just to open it. Glued together
What happens if even the new key still doesn’t work? Basically the reason I bought the new key, is because the car won’t respond to the key buttons and won’t turn unless you put the key into the slot…any idea what’s going on?
I think that means the green circuit board isn't working. I think it uses the other black part that looks like a magnet when you plug it in the dash. That will work even if the battery in the fob is dead.
Do you know if there’s anyway to clean the circuit if it’s rusted?😂
If its working, maybe its best to just leave it alone. As long as it doesn't get wet, hopefully the rust won't get worse.
That black chip needs to be in there because it's what turns on the car when you put it in the keu hole in the prius
A word of caution: I purchased a replacement shell from the same company from Amazon. But now they do not include the four new bolts!
I was panicking cause the damn thing wasn't working. Then I saw the damn black thing
Finally did it but it won't unlock the car but it will start the car. What the heck?
