Matt ...great job. I enjoy flying with you. Always wanted to fly ......did 11 hours ....my next trip would have been solo....and flying in on a final approach.....crosswind turned me sideways ...i panicked, and have never wanted to take that chance again.......but still have the passion to do it., I was 32 at the time ....i'm now 76......so thanks for the ride.......really great!!
lmao at 11:45. Right when you hit that rock my instant thought was "All that smooth sand, and he finds that one freakin' boulder!" And then you basically say the same thing a moment later (looks back to see if wheel is still there). Had me rolling!
Your having Way too much fun. I think the ultra light is the way to fly. I have flown RVs, Challengers, and Pipers, most fun is in the UL category, but any flying is fun...thanks for sharing!
You actually mentioned one of the Things I am interested in in the Video , I am a Professional Bowhunter , I wanted to use an Ultralight to get to a few areas I need to Hunt More Quickly and really just enjoy the time
You have to check your local regulations very carefully. In BC as part of our "fair chase" laws, you are not allowed to hunt on the same day that you fly. You can fly in to remote areas for the purpose of hunting, but you must spend the night before you even begin scouting. And you are definitely not allowed to scout for or chase animals from the air. Even if you fly on a normal commercial flight, you aren't allowed to hunt the same day, the only exception being flying out after your hunt of course.
Loved the water landings for Scott especially when he rode up on the beaches. I put my 701 up for sale and I'm considering a newer Challenger with larger fuel tank, pontoons and maybe even the 582 for more power and strangely enough better fuel economy. I want to stick with the pusher prop tandem style plane for now. Who knows what the future will bring. Thanks for the awesome video, please send my best to Scott.
Will do! If you do decide on the Challenger for your next plane, please look into the latest design as it has possibly corrected some of the issues the previous generation had. If you're open to suggestions on your next plane, I'd consider looking at the CGS Hawk Arrow II. Same config as the Challenger (tri-gear, high wing, pusher) and from what I've heard, a much better design all around.
thank you for sharing this video. Being hard of hearing this type of flying would be best obtain for me. I hear pretty well but not enough. I have 22 hrs in tayorcraft and 4 hrs in sailplane. I say the amphibian is my favorite way to fly.
@@vlogcity1111 The most popular method of repair for wood props is using crazy glue and baking soda. Clean out the damaged area for loose material, degrease it, apply a small amount of thin (runny) crazy glue, sprinkle in baking soda. Rinse and repeat until the damaged area is built up above the profile of the propeller and then carefully file and sand it back down to match. Paint and rebalance if desired or needed.
@@mmatt thank you very much for sharing repair procedures. I’m thinking epoxy wood filler could work as an alternative? It’s just epoxy with sawdust as a binder to give it enough stability to fill in chips. Let me know what you think. I purchased a 2 seater quicksilver mx for 1800 with floats this week. As well as a single pair of floats for $850cad Now I need a single seater Mx. There is one up for sale 6 hours away from me. Do you think $2700 is a reasonable price for a single that can fly?
@@vlogcity1111 I've never used epoxy wood filler so I can't comment on it. Give it a try and see I guess. Just make sure to use it in a location that won't affect the flight safety should it fail. @8:13 That Challenger looks so sexy! No dis to your craft Matt Your terrain looks very interesting to fly in, at least as nice as what Trent Palmer flies in. Can you imagine flying in Saskatchewan? Same, same same every day.
You are truly an adventurer. You know you're going to lose a motor. You need to have a hook knife on a string around your wrist for takeoffs. When that motor quits you'll be underwater instantly. I hope you don't get knocked out. Or you'll be dead.
I am seriously thinking of flying ultralights as buying a Cessna 182 or a Mooney 201. I would like to have a enclosed plane then have lots of fun. I am in Southern New Jersey so I have to find a school here.
Old motor was 50 hp, new motor is 65 hp. Ya, the 912 is really too much engine for this size airframe in my opinion. Not to mention the $25K+ purchase price!
Any way to run some hardwire power supplies to the camera mount locations and plug them all into a 2s lipo battery (which is quite small). That would put at full charge 8.4vdc available then plug the battery into a switching regulator and knock the output to 5vdc and the gopro will be happy for much longer times. Should not have any interference as the system would be divorced from the airframe. These parts are very common to the RC model flying/drone/quadcopter hobbyist. Also quite light and inexpensive.
I've recently run a power cable to my strut cam which is the one that records my audio. The other two are secondary and tertiary angles so I'm not nearly as concerned with them cutting out but I'll probably wire them up someday too.
Hi Matt, what is your home airport? the sandy Island you landed on do you know the name of it, or where abouts it is on the Saint John River? I fly a 701 on Anfibous floats and would love to meet up with you guys next summer some time. I am located on the lower part of the Saint John River around the Oak Point area..looks like it was a great day for the XC flight.. great video btw..
This video was shot up in the Edmundston area when my home airport was CYES. I now keep the plane in Woodstock (CCD3) The river islands around here are a bit too rocky for the Beaver but I'm sure we could still find some fun and adventure if you ever came up this way. :-)
Great, thanks for the Reply Matt. I will put it on my list of things to do in next years flying adventures and shoot you an e-mail in the spring when I start flying again. Till then I will just keep watching and looking for your videos that you post. Nice job on them btw..
Hi Matt. Don't you ever get stone chips in your prop landing on beaches like this? Could prove to be expensive....maybe spats or stone guards might be the next goodies to buy....?
Yup, every now and then but it's pretty rare. I have the nickel leading edge protection and it's pretty durable. I have considered designing a set of stone deflectors but I just haven't got there yet.
Are you talking about the one at 22:37? If so, it was the lesser of two evils. I didn't have enough altitude to return to the beach if the engine quit so I figured I'd rather be in the trees instead of in the water.
The only downside to them is the lack of video stabilization so it picks up the vibration from the engine sometimes. They could also stand to have a wider field of view. Other than that, I like them quite a bit.
That all depends on the tailwind component. I can carry up to 18 US gallons of gas and I burn about 5 gallons per hour. With a cruise speed of about 55 mph, that's just under 200 miles with no wind. Add a tailwind and that number just goes up.
Yes.... but it might be hard finding an instructor light enough to train you. Most 2 seat ULs have a useful load of around 500 lbs and fuel will usually take up about 70. So you'd need a 120 lbs instructor...
May I ask about how much you spent to get going solo on the ultralight? I need to save up, but this is definitely in my future :) Did you do it as a package or just by the hour?
Typical rates are around $100-$150 per hour up here in Canada. That will vary in different places. Most students require at least 10 hours of instruction before they go solo.
For you groundhogs - for me bandicoots - b*stards, but we're not allowed to kill them because the darlings are native, you're lucky, you should see my veg patch...

Research part 103, take away one of his seats and it would be close to legal ultralight. The one in this video you can fly with a sport pilot rating. Half the hrs of private pilot but it comes with restrictions.
I enjoy your videos bud...appreciate the effort but the “shoot it the face” remark was a bit much. Destructive species or not that animal is just trying to live...have some compassion :) keep up the good work!!!
I guess my compassion lies more with the farmer who is trying to make a living working that land and not with an animal who has overpopulated this area and is actively destroying crops. Besides hunting, the only other economical way of controlling the population size is with poison and that unfortunately affects other non-harmful wildlife.

7:1 according to the manual. I've seen 8:1 though (but I think I had a bit of a tailwind)
