I believe that the consumption has to be taken with a little bit grain of salt, I never have experienced frozen windows from the inside, normal people will increase the heat inside a bit more, imagine there are passengers at the back 🥶🥶🥶 (and pay attention to the extra issolation)

I'd guess half of the round trip inefficiency losses per kwh, the other half being accounted for in the residual heat from charging. Thanks for putting most of the puzzle together regardless. Imma look up round trip efficiency right quick. Edit: Wind power engineering, my first Google result, says battery storage system have 75-85 percent efficiency. Although not exactly the same, the car's inverter also contributes to the heat generated. Taking the 15% losses, that's 7.5% of battery energy consumption is otherwise waste heat being used to heat the cabin. That's not a lot of heat, but it does contribute to the overall value.

Maybe Bjorn needs to do these cold weather range tests with his wife in the car. Keeping the cabin cool enough that the rear windows ice up on the inside is not something most people are going to want to do. Yes, I realize that the rear climate control is turned off automatically on Tesla’s, but I always have my rear vents closed on my Audi and I’ve never had the rear Windows ice over. It would be nice to see a range test with someone actually keeping the cabin pleasantly warm during the drive.
In two years M3 I’ve used ionity once when it was flatrate cause I could get it be even cheaper than home charging :) then they change the tariff model increased their prices and I’ve never used them since. There always is a Supercharger to get the juice cheaper !

I charge at 0.29 euro / kWh (Belgium) Maybe you don't know, but Ionity is the charging Network of Mercedes / VAG / BMW / Ford / Hyundai ... similar to the SuC Network of Tesla, with that difference that it is open for everybody, just a higher price.

Because somehow in the Tesla Systems it will have to be possible to make a link with the (external) charging card/providers for invoicing purposes. It might be a contributing factor but it wouldn’t explain such a digital difference between the rear of the front windows and the front of the rear windows.
You have a thermal storage battery that helps with heating. The battery is about 500kg and while is hard to estimate the thermal mass as is made of so many materials I will use an average of 0.5J per gram and degree Celsius. So say usable 40C delta will provide 0.14Wh x 40C x 500kg = 2.8kWh Now that I calculated 2.8kWh is not that much of a thermal storage capacity unless I made some mistake. I was expecting a bit more.

As an engineer this is so satisfying to watch, Tesla really have done an ace job, IMHO they’re still years ahead in terms of the electric-car-specific engineering (too bad I can’t afford one). The charger issue could be that the cable temperature is declared ‘implausible’ below a certain temperature, so it limits the current to a very low value to be safe. In that case it should be an easy fix.

The laminated windows are so much better, because they use different materials. Glas/some sort of polymer and „glue“/Glas, which makes heat transfer harder...
Fancy chargers you have in Norway! And all of them actually function. I won't travel that far in that kind of cold in an EV without the confidence that I can charge. The good news the confidence is there! People assume by default it's the same case here in California, but if you use 3rd party charging networks - chances you are going to fast charge are not 100% unfortunately.
You have to be able to either run some fresh air in or use the AC in the winter to keep things dry and no internal fog/frost. Very important in winter.
I think an electric 12v blanket running some watts close to your body, would be a great complement. It will not influence total consumtion during camping so much at 25. Maybe even reduce it since car climate system can be running easier
I've wondered... When you drive from home without charger plugged in and the car is cold, is it more efficient to A; preheat the car anyway and lose some capacity before the trip, or B; Just get in and drive and let the car heat up while driving? Hmmm

Hi Bjørn, fantastische Arbeit, ja! I have a little request along the lines of your recent cold weather tests. It might be interesting for many Model 3 drivers in the cold weather: There is a report of an issue with 3-phase AC charging the Model 3 at subzero battery temps and high charge (e.g. 80%). Here, it seems the car does not take charge from the charger, but instead uses battery power to afterburn and heat up the battery once plugged in. Only when the battery is warm enough it will allow current to flow from the charger. Why does it not take the power from the charger to run the afterburner and instead discharges the battery?
Using the battery to run the afterburners would help warm the batteries up a bit quicker. Odd that it doesn’t use the wall power though. I wonder if the car was at or above the charge limit set in the car.
@@SirHackaL0t. Well, there wasn't any issue with getting enough power to run the afterburners, it was just that this power didn't come from the charger, according to ScanMyTesla. This is indeed odd behavior and my best guess is that it's a kind of battery protection feature to really not allow any charging at subzero battery temps. But I have seen it on only one car, yet.

Björn is using some sort of insulation for the glas roof which will help with keeping it warm inside. This makes it hard to compare with other vehicles consumtion if you don´t insulate your car.

Hi Bjorn, I was wondering if you could make a video about the Tesla M3SR+ late 2020 MiC with the new battery. Me and a lot of other new owners are having trouble with charging speeds. No matter how warm and low the bettery is, charging doesn't get over 60 ish KW on a super charger. I've driven for hundreds of km'ers to a supercharger and warmed up the battery like crazy but still no change. On the Tesla Model 3 Netherlands group a lot of owners are complaining with even lower charging speeds. Do you know more about this? Thanks a lot in advance
At -20ºC it's very possible some components of the charger are operating outside the optimal temperature range. Still, high quality components often work well under -40ºC so idk.
Dont do it Bjørn!!I just bought a model 3 LR brand new 6 days ago, also in norway. The heat pump/climate control has already stopped working twice!! It was subzero temps both times!!! I froze my ass off getting home and could hardly see because I couldnt stop the windscreen fogging up!! Oh and because the drivers side windscreen wiper doesn’t work properly 🤣😅
Scary, I hope he's not turning into "Popsicle Bjorn" right now! I've spent 3 winters in arctic Canada, heat is not optional in those temps (unless you have a well built igloo and good caribou skins).
I should also add that when we drove over dovrefjellet -dombås-bjorli and it was -14C. The rear side/passenger wonders were fogging up like in this video, but turning the fan up to 7+ helped prevent the fogging.

@@marcsimmonds5483 In Sweden some of them comes by default :) like the heat pump etc. But yes, there are some options (like for most cars?) that you can choose what you equip it with.
Can you also do a cold weather consumption test but not with battery at 40 C. Test a stretch where one day with a parked model 3 which has ice on the windows and cold battery and se how much energy you spend from A to B. Then do the same stretch once the car has cooled down, but with 5-10 min preconditioning and see if how much difference the total energy usage is. :)
@@bjornnyland Hehe no i mean the same weather but without the battery cell mid temp at 40 C. If the battery is at 0-4 C I think the results will be very different. My 2019 uses almost 250 wh/km on a regular drive with 60 kph average speed.
We shouldn’t forget the energy that is expended heating the battery on charging when assessing the efficiency. Just because it’s “hidden” doesn’t mean it’s not part of the overall consumption.
@@bjornnyland Very true, Bjorn - I was referring to the overall efficiency figures such as ones quoted in datasheets - they rarely if ever I suspect add in the vampire drain and the like!
I remember when we were in Bergen for Christmas about 15 years ago and at -20c my wife said it was so cold she thought her head would crack! (Japanese over exaggeration!)
Just got my M3P, I also saw that the back windows was fogging up, checked the fan settings on the far right side you have a icon to force airflow to the back. I assume the 3 has the same thing as the model X has, it only turns on back air vents when it is a passenger in the back.... is this a new feature on the 3? You have driven M3 long time so you should probably know Björn?
Can one preheat the battery manually in the model 3? Just in case one wants to charge spontaneously at Ionnity? And how long does it take to heat up the battery from 0 - 20* C?
I received my M3P i mid December. On new years day the heating stopped working. It is now fixed and Tesla explained that all new M3 have a heating sensor of poor quality. New sensors are expected i late January and all owners of the new M3 will receive a letter from Tesla where they offer to change the sensors.
Next vid will be interesting assuming tesla uses CO2 refrigerant in the heatpump which usaly only works down to -25C. So this could mean a jump in consumption during camping

Ja, det er en slik lader som følger med bilen. Kommer til å ta lang tid dog. Inntil jeg fikk min lader installert ladet jeg på et 15 amp stikk. For å ikke belaste kursen for mye valgte jeg be bilen om å lade litt skatere. 9-12 amp.
I praksis bare å plugge inn, men dersom du skal bruke det som permanent lading så er det visse krav. Tidligere var det krav at det kun skulle være en egen kurs ett stikk på kursen, men de endret det slik at du kan ha flere, så lenge det er i samme rom. Men rent praktisk så går det helt fint, jeg kjenner en som lader i flere år med 5 ampere (pga han delte kursen med en garasje åpner.) Det er lov å sette opp en blå CCE plug som fast ladepunkt, du kan da trekke 16A konstant. Vanlig Schuko er det tillatt med med maks 10A i Norge.

Because when heatpump is running, AC is diabled. Heatpump actually runs the A/C compressor in reverse, so It not techincal possible to have both running in tandem.

The car is using the battery as a big thermal mass that you heat while charging and cool while driving, that is really cool!

It’s ice in the back window because you have turned off the air conditioning in the back.

Can confirm the same issue in -25 weather. A/C doesn’t help much. Heat pump was struggling to blow warm air in -30 going highway speed.

The issue was for 2019 battery, though. Interesting to see if it persists for LG battery.

Hi Bjorn, I was wondering if you could make a video about the Tesla M3SR+ late 2020 MiC with the new battery. Me and a lot of other new owners are having trouble with charging speeds. No matter how warm and low the bettery is, charging doesn't get over 60 ish KW on a super charger. I've driven for hundreds of km'ers to a supercharger and warmed up the battery like crazy but still no change. On the Tesla Model 3 Netherlands group a lot of owners are complaining with even lower charging speeds. Do you know more about this? Thanks a lot in advance
At -20ºC it's very possible some components of the charger are operating outside the optimal temperature range. Still, high quality components often work well under -40ºC so idk.
Dont do it Bjørn!!I just bought a model 3 LR brand new 6 days ago, also in norway. The heat pump/climate control has already stopped working twice!! It was subzero temps both times!!! I froze my ass off getting home and could hardly see because I couldnt stop the windscreen fogging up!! Oh and because the drivers side windscreen wiper doesn’t work properly 🤣😅

Scary, I hope he's not turning into "Popsicle Bjorn" right now! I've spent 3 winters in arctic Canada, heat is not optional in those temps (unless you have a well built igloo and good caribou skins).
I should also add that when we drove over dovrefjellet -dombås-bjorli and it was -14C. The rear side/passenger wonders were fogging up like in this video, but turning the fan up to 7+ helped prevent the fogging.
Ionity is cold gating, also in Germany.
wow this channel helps me a lot, here in north spain every morning in the winter are about -10º-15º, my garage has no heat its cold, if i leaves the tesla all the night charging the battery will be a nice temperature? nice content bro, helping al ot

@@marcsimmonds5483 In Sweden some of them comes by default :) like the heat pump etc. But yes, there are some options (like for most cars?) that you can choose what you equip it with.
Can you also do a cold weather consumption test but not with battery at 40 C. Test a stretch where one day with a parked model 3 which has ice on the windows and cold battery and se how much energy you spend from A to B. Then do the same stretch once the car has cooled down, but with 5-10 min preconditioning and see if how much difference the total energy usage is. :)

@@bjornnyland Hehe no i mean the same weather but without the battery cell mid temp at 40 C. If the battery is at 0-4 C I think the results will be very different. My 2019 uses almost 250 wh/km on a regular drive with 60 kph average speed.

We shouldn’t forget the energy that is expended heating the battery on charging when assessing the efficiency.
Just because it’s “hidden” doesn’t mean it’s not part of the overall consumption.
It's lowering the consumption while driving which is what you really need during winter.

Very true, Bjorn - I was referring to the overall efficiency figures such as ones quoted in datasheets - they rarely if ever I suspect add in the vampire drain and the like!
Vampire drain in Model 3 is very, very low.
Its getting better but its still not good enough for Canadian winters.
A/C is off because A/C is in heating mode (heat pump).
Buy a portable hairföhn Björn! For heating up the cable while charging or maybe electric footwarmer. (With long cable to el. Outlet of course)

Low speed on Ionity may be caused by the cold coolant in the cable. I guess it's a safety feature.
No, it's an error in temp sensor.
AC dries the air. No steam/ice on windows.
Ac doesnt really work in such low temperatures. Also, cold air cant have a lot of moisture compared to warm air
Hopefully the temp inside the car is 20+ and its that air the AC is dehumidifying. Am I wrong here?

Just got my M3P, I also saw that the back windows was fogging up, checked the fan settings on the far right side you have a icon to force airflow to the back. I assume the 3 has the same thing as the model X has, it only turns on back air vents when it is a passenger in the back.... is this a new feature on the 3? You have driven M3 long time so you should probably know Björn?
Can one preheat the battery manually in the model 3? Just in case one wants to charge spontaneously at Ionnity?
And how long does it take to heat up the battery from 0 - 20* C?

I received my M3P i mid December. On new years day the heating stopped working. It is now fixed and Tesla explained that all new M3 have a heating sensor of poor quality. New sensors are expected i late January and all owners of the new M3 will receive a letter from Tesla where they offer to change the sensors.

Hi Bjørn, just bought my first EL car, Volvo XC40 pure electric. Happy with it. But, I have also ordered a Tesla Y, and I need to decide before Tesla is arriving, which one I will keep, and sell... If you was me, which one would you keep? I am a bit disappointed in range on Volvo. But I feel like it is a CAR if you know what I mean 😃

Comfort is already very good. And range is no problem because we have so many superchargers.
Kort spørsmål Bjørn. Dersom man skal lade en Tesla modell 3 eller modell Y, er det bare å stikke kontakten i veggen (10 apers jodet kontakt) og den andre i bilen. Eller må man installere noe annet?
Ja, det er en slik lader som følger med bilen. Kommer til å ta lang tid dog. Inntil jeg fikk min lader installert ladet jeg på et 15 amp stikk. For å ikke belaste kursen for mye valgte jeg be bilen om å lade litt skatere. 9-12 amp.
I praksis bare å plugge inn, men dersom du skal bruke det som permanent lading så er det visse krav.
Tidligere var det krav at det kun skulle være en egen kurs ett stikk på kursen, men de endret det slik at du kan ha flere, så lenge det er i samme rom.
Men rent praktisk så går det helt fint, jeg kjenner en som lader i flere år med 5 ampere (pga han delte kursen med en garasje åpner.)
Det er lov å sette opp en blå CCE plug som fast ladepunkt, du kan da trekke 16A konstant. Vanlig Schuko er det tillatt med med maks 10A i Norge.
@@MegaCommissar Tusen takk for greit svar. Går ut fra at bilen blir fulladet (til 80%) i løpet av et par dager. Det er mange dager vi ikke bruker vår nåværende bensinbil, så det burde gå bra. Vi vurderer en Tesla modell Y long range.

Why dont u just turn on AC?
Because when heatpump is running, AC is diabled. Heatpump actually runs the A/C compressor in reverse, so It not techincal possible to have both running in tandem.

I would run the A/C for a short while, and then change back to heatpump. :)
