How does someone get only 12 years for cold blooded murder shooting a man in the head with a gun 4 times and killing him?

I was a Junior at Aloha when this happened. There were so many rumors going around and many students were dumbfounded that the case was dropped. I am floored that the case has been solved and justice will be done. Don’t let the killer walk again. I too feel really bad for Joe Wilson who was falsely accused. At the time “most” felt he was responsible, mostly because of the extensive Oregonian and Oregon Journal articles at the time. A good reminder that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Very good work from WA County Sheriffs Dept! Geez, I had butterflies watching to see who was arrested. My brother forwarded this too me who was a Senior at the time. Wow, just wow!

Aloha? It's very close to Beaverton indeed...
I understand that this had an impact on you at the time, it could have affected you or your friends of the same age. What is regrettable is that the person they unmasked had been interrogated in 1974 and had not been very clear in his statements. And to think that he went under the radars for almost 50 years! I would like to spare a thought for the four parents of these two young boys who must no longer be in this world today, extinct without having known the truth. But I am still delighted that justice has finally been done to the victims. The Paul's sister Barbara will finally be able to begin her mourning. My feelings go with it. And just like you, I congratulate the sheriff and his men for being able to resolve this matter after having, I think, shed new light on it.
I am excited to see that some of the crimes that took place during this time in Oregon have recently been solved. I am talking about the murder of Martha Morrison in September 1974 which was attributed to the dark Warren Leslie Forrest, thanks to the victim's blood found on his pistol (Martha's skeleton was quickly found but it was not identified until 45 years ago later).
I also think of Barbara Mae Tucker, murdered in 1980 and whose murderer was identified in 2021, of the victims of serial killer Homer Lee Jackson, killed between 1983 and 1993 in Portland, or even of those of John Charles Bolsinger (who has since died) between 1986 and 1988 in Eugene.
I hope that one day they will shed light on that of poor Shirley Ryan who was cowardly beaten, raped and murdered in Portland in 1976 while she was returning from a supermarket to buy cookies with her elder sister.

@@laurentrobert4348 Yes, Aloha High School. The two young men that were murdered, were classmates of all of use at Aloha High at the time. As was Joe Wilson who was arrested and sat in WaCo jail for an extended period of time. My point was us teenagers all felt he was guilty, just from the news coverage and rumors. It did shock and affect us all. Very sad for all involved, except for the murderer. He also murdered his commanding officer at Ft Lewis and spent time in prison for that. Thankfully forensics are better now, and there are people who still work those unsolved cases. Hopefully the murderer rots in jail to his last day…NEVER to be offered parole.

@@mylifeonthebeach Fortunately, Wilson was exonerated in this case. This was relatively quick in the eyes of the law but it is obvious that for him the imprisonment was a traumatic experience.
Regarding Criss, I knew about the murder of his commander. If I remember, he owed money to his boss who started pressuring him to pay it back, which Criss didn't like. This guy is completely crazy. It is unthinkable that we will ever be able to free him. In France we unfortunately have too lax a justice system which strives to give a second chance or even a third, in addition to the game of sentence reductions for good behavior in prison. In addition, here in France, crimes can be prescribed after 40 years without progress. Criss would therefore not have been brought before justice and would live peacefully in freedom. I much prefer the American justice system!

@@laurentrobert4348 You live in France? Did you live here in the Portland area back then, if not, how do you know about the unsolved murders in the area? Just curious how you know so much about them. Thanks for your insight.

@@mylifeonthebeach Rest assured, your curiosity greatly pleases me. Yes i live in the south of France but I have family based in the United States on the east coast (Connecticut, Florida) and I have unfortunately never been to Oregon (which must certainly be a very beautiful place). In fact, I am writing a detective novel that takes place in Portland in September 1974. I'm "only" 46 years old but I have long been passionate about this era (movies, music, fashion) but I also want to describe the dark and violent side of this decade, between underage prostitutes and hitchhikers who were often targeted by deranged minds. The murder in my book is fictional but mention is made of the crimes of "Ted" (Bundy) and Warren Leslie Forrest in neighboring Washington State, and of the two victims in Beaverton (without saying their names, by respect for them and their memory). So I had to collect a lot of miscellaneous informations, including crimes that took place in the Portland area. But it's a job that I do with a lot of empathy, I'm interested in the past of the victims if anything can be known about them and also in the aftermath of these cases.
NB: And sorry for the mistake, I meant to talk about Sharon Ryan and not Shirley Ryan. It was late when I wrote my message.

Still thankful for this outcome so many years after the murders and the families that were never the same. Such a tragedy.

Great work WCSO! Such a shame he was able to take another life after Pete and Donnie and in the same fashion.
Glad he was prosecuted for that murder but it's mind boggling he shot his U.S. Army commanding officer in the head 5 times and only served 12 years of a 35 year sentence before being paroled.
Hopefully he has no other victims. I hope he lives to a ripe old age in prison. He deserves to rot in there.
