Red Bull operates Eurocopter BO-105 Helicopters in the aerobatics which come from the factory with 'Hingeless' Rotor System, not 'Rigid' such as the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne Attack Helicopter, circa late 1960's, that lost out on an Army contract to the Bell AH-1G Cobra for use in Vietnam. I flew Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm BO-105's for the Virginia State Police as a Trooper-Pilot, the Dept. had three of them at one time, which were operated on their 'EMS Med-Flight' Medical Evacuation Program.
Amazing if people only knew how much it takes to just fly one of these let alone doing any type of flying like that. I can't put in to words how talented that pilot is !!!!!! Just a quick sample it takes 3 constant input controls to just get it in the air and you always have to be aware of the airspeed, altitude not to mention avoiding the vortex ring and keeping recovery height!!! AMAZING !!!
This is one bad ass pilot & good playing music to go with it! About 1 min 52 seconds in another helicopter plays right past his tail section! That was too close for comfort! I never get tired of watching this video clip!
even if its modified thats some amazing collective pitch skills.. even normal heli blades change pitch witch changes airflow from up to down....... its not the blade speed that causes lift in a heli its the pitch of the blades that can be changed at will via the collective stick
I'm working in Minot, ND with a former Army Cobra pilot. Going to show him the video tomorrow for his reaction. Very cool guy. He also fly's fixed wing. Good luck on your Helio training.:-)
i think its the red bull air races in detroit because i remember the heilicoptor doing that and it looks alot like the detriot river. there were military jets flying with the air race planes.
It's amazing to think that nuts, bolts, & rivets can cope with the kind of forces that pilots like these put on that airframe. Hat's off to this pilot. You sir, have very big kahunas.
@cascadeSC actually, from the first flip, you can see the ground when in falls doing a flip. and if he turned the camera, the ground would have flipped too
@popcornlagace Not from the pilot, the throttle is handled by a governor that's sole purpose is to keep the rotor head spinning at a set RPM. Changing the pitch of the rotor blades allows the rotors to either pull the chopper up or push it down, depending on whether the chopper is upside down or not. With negative pitch and the chopper upside down the rotors will push the chopper upwards rather than pull it towards the ground.
Every time this thing flips and spins, I can imagine the cockpit board lighting up frantically with every error light on and every buzzer going off. Awesome stuff.
I do believe for a helicopter to fly upside down the rotor rotation would have to reverse which in theory would work, so the helicopter is pulled down when upside down. This seems the most logical reasons why it looks like a free fall.
The pilot modified the rotors to be stronger, because in an unmodified helicopter, if you were to go upside, the rotors would bend, and chop the tail off.
Absolutely true, i've seen a Bo105 doing aerobatic performance wiht my own eyes. Almost like a bigger RC model halicopter. :) One of my favourite helicopters.
I saw this at the red bull air race in London it was fantastic! The British Royal Navy Lynx could do this in 1977 for those who say it is not possible! Check out the Black Cats display team, they do a display like this with two aircraft at once!
@Bill56569 It does thanks. It's a question I've been wanting an answer to for some time:-) With fixed wing GA aircraft most joining circuits seem to be flown in a left turn pattern, mostly, so maybe that's why they sit on the left because as you say, it affords them better vision. Most naval pilots however sit on the right, and one reason I have for this is because most control towers on airctraft carriers are also on the right. Better vision again. Maybe this spread to civilian use.
Hope they secured their loose change beforehand. :) The back flip was impressive, but the 360 rolls were jaw-dropping (considering that I think your lift is gone for at least half the roll) and they didn't appear that far off the ground.
It's not the "design" that's the issue. It's the weight of the helicopter itself. The fuel, fuselage, pilot, etc. all contribute to it not being able to hover inverted. While you can fly an RC helicopter in an inverted hover without much issue, once you scale things up it becomes far more complex.
Red Bull is the best, and I love red bull air race!!!!!!

Simply amazing.
0:22 to 0:29 it does a full back into an inverted dive. The reason it doesnt follow a traditional loop is to reduce negative G's so the pilots dont black out.
Red Bull supports many top athletes. Formula O ne (RedBull Team, Sebastian Vettel), Lindsay Vonn (Women's skiing), many BMX-ers, snowboarders, every sport basicly. Aswell as RedBull Air.
i didn't even know it was physically possible to do back flips on a helicopter... AND i never thought helicopter can be consider extreme sport. you Red Bull guys just keeps me proving i don't know jack sh!t!
If what I saw was true, that is one bad dude flying that chopper. That is one bad chopper too! I saw a loop,a split S, a roll, and alot of impossibility! Wow!
@RarArchive its true they stall however the eurocopter there comes stock with a fixed rotor system allowing it to be able to do these stunts without colliding the rotors into each other. and that pilot... is easily one of the most impressive pilots ive ever seen but there is another pilot on here who lands his stuntplane on one wing after losing it in midair. that was more insane that this. check it out.
@faryn5 ur dad was right..in a way. Just to let u guys know that stunt can only be done by certain types of helis ONLY cause they have these special rotar blades on them that is strong enough and flexible to withstand the g force of these kind of stunts. if not....the blades will break and u pretty much crash. there are downsides to these blades...so the military does not use them incase u were wondering.

Ive seen them do backflips in Huey's and Cobra's at an air show. But they get it major altitude before they try it so theres less risk of just dropping out of the sky.
@phazon1029 and @Archernewb, Helicopters, as phazon said, do stall. And in a backflip a helicopter would not only stall but almost always the tail rotor would collide with the main rotor. This helicopter was modified on a large scale to make it capable of these stunts. It can still stall, but its alot less prone to it, and the pilot is a pro. Not only that, to do what he did, you would probably have to have no care about whether you live or die at any time in your life from then on. (old)
this is exactly what the green harvest choppers do when we shoot at them with high powered rifles! evasive manuvers! Some of em are pretty good, thats why they're still alive.
coool.. this guy is the only one in europe holding an official aerobatic license for helicopters. the MBB helicopter he flies has a special rotorhead and special lube device in the gear box of the turbine engine.. a unique machine.. so dont try that with a normal helicopter.. smile.. greetz from switzerland
@Reptile656 It's actually not scary. It's an incredible adrenaline rush. It's incredibly fun. Like a roller coaster. It's a different world and almost puts you in an hypnotic state.
This is done by extending the links and pulling cyclic arms done makes for very sensitive controls notice he's not throwing the rudder it will cause the blades to slow in inversion
Aaaaah, the Bölkow, German Engineering at it's best. Awesome machine. If you think this is sick, look up the videos on here where German Army Pilots really give the Bölkow the beans on airshows or in low level flying. Awesome flying here nevertheless :-)
I asked an RAF chopper pilot back in the 80's at an airshow (RAF St Mawgan) how this is done and he said it's not exactly a 360 degree as such but the pilot 'rolls' out of it, as is evidenced here.Maybe it's not strictly possible? but anyway, this is an extremely skillfull pilot, not for the fainthearted.

Now i want to see forward flips with a copter :P
I can do this in battlefield 4
Amazing if people only knew how much it takes to just fly one of these let alone doing any type of flying like that. I can't put in to words how talented that pilot is !!!!!!

This helicopter was modified. Read the description. You can't do any of these stunts in a normal BO-105, or any other normal chopper.
This is still pretty insane flying, ridig rotor and all!
Yes , you can. A Westland Lynx can do these stunts with an unmodified airframe.
Video : 2007
UA-cam : Recommended it 2019
Format for unoriginal comment: several years to come
Dobrik got me here :P

This is my man Chuck Aaron. Chuck, if you read this, i am Amielle's brother. Remember me from the Red Bull Moto GP in California. This is awesome
i think its the red bull air races in detroit because i remember the heilicoptor doing that and it looks alot like the detriot river. there were military jets flying with the air race planes.

actually, from the first flip, you can see the ground when in falls doing a flip. and if he turned the camera, the ground would have flipped too
Surely there's only a few pilots in the world that can do this or even attempt it for that matter!! Crazy skills!! ;)
the song is by the 22-20s, the title is "Devil in me"
@popcornlagace
Not from the pilot, the throttle is handled by a governor that's sole purpose is to keep the rotor head spinning at a set RPM. Changing the pitch of the rotor blades allows the rotors to either pull the chopper up or push it down, depending on whether the chopper is upside down or not.
With negative pitch and the chopper upside down the rotors will push the chopper upwards rather than pull it towards the ground.
Amazing that those rotor blades can take the g-forces that they are being subjected to. Could never do that in my old UH1-H.
Every time this thing flips and spins, I can imagine the cockpit board lighting up frantically with every error light on and every buzzer going off. Awesome stuff.
Like 8 years ago I Remember there is was disco music. To this video ❤️❤️I better like the disco music
Heli loops are old news. Hughes rolled out the AH-64 Apache in '83. It can loop as well.
I do believe for a helicopter to fly upside down the rotor rotation would have to reverse which in theory would work, so the helicopter is pulled down when upside down. This seems the most logical reasons why it looks like a free fall.
@XapD
But BO-105 was the first helicopter in the world who did all these things, fourty years ago !
It's more difficult to do these maneuvers with a helicopter compared to a conventional aircraft. That's what make it amazing.
not many helicopters can even do flips, this is amazing.
the blades have variable pitch so when its upside down it can push up in relation to the pilots.
thats the bo105.
one of the best helicopters in the world.
u just gotta love that chopper
The pilot modified the rotors to be stronger, because in an unmodified helicopter, if you were to go upside, the rotors would bend, and chop the tail off.
the barrel roles are most impressive.
amazing helicopter action footage...next quest: try this at night
i saw this at EAA Airventure 1 or 2 years ago. it was so cool lol
Absolutely true, i've seen a Bo105 doing aerobatic performance wiht my own eyes. Almost like a bigger RC model halicopter. :)
One of my favourite helicopters.
I saw this in real life in Barcelona and it is truly amazing! It is stupid cool!
how can 322 people dislike this? its the most awesome thing ever!
It is amazing what the BO105 is capable of doing. WOW is all I can say.
@sunNbass its an american pilot called Chuck Aaron.
I saw this guy in New Orleans last month. One word--- INCREDIBLE!!!!!
REAL BEAST, Can't believe you can do that in helicopter, BRILLIANT,
I saw this at the red bull air race in London it was fantastic! The British Royal Navy Lynx could do this in 1977 for those who say it is not possible! Check out the Black Cats display team, they do a display like this with two aircraft at once!

When the US Army was testing the Blackhawk, my stepdad's brothet was one of the pilots. Did some of these things. Badass
Hope they secured their loose change beforehand. :) The back flip was impressive, but the 360 rolls were jaw-dropping (considering that I think your lift is gone for at least half the roll) and they didn't appear that far off the ground.
I can't believe this video only has 2 million views. The other 3.4 mil, are all me....
Cooler Flug, cooler Film mit cooler Musik unterlegt.
That pilot did awsome. I love helis. This was pretty dangerous, but "whats life without a little danger".
Flying a helicopter is hard enough. Yet alone doing back flips. Amazing piloting skills.
Saw this 'copter at the Red Bull MotoGP at Laguna Seca a few years ago. Was absolutely NUTS!!!
I saw that last year in Barcelona, was so awesome...
i used to go on my dads computer and ask to watch this same video over and over again when i was really young.
me too
uh yeah, red bull air race! was a very exciting show, i saw it in rio :) same helicopter, same show ^*
It's not the "design" that's the issue. It's the weight of the helicopter itself.

It has to be using some negative collective on those rols. Nice flying and nice heli!
I saw this since I been having trouble looking helicopters stunts in movies and now i believe most of them.
OMG haha. Forget my last comment. After somewhere over 3 hours of searching, I've finally found it. The song is "Devil In Me" by 22-20s
Red Bull is the best, and I love red bull air race!!!!!!

Holy shit! he is sooooo close to the water on those rolls!!!! this guys balls have to be in the genis book of world records!!! for size!
That would be one hell of a fun ride. Where do I sign up?
great song
great video
great advertising!
5 stars!
@Speedless73: Quote from wiki: "Bo105 Production began under Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB), which became a part of Eurocopter in 1991"
Wow, this is a cool aerobatic helicopter
I just read your info under pic---now that makes sense! Wow to the pilot!
Red Bull supports many top athletes. Formula O ne (RedBull Team, Sebastian Vettel), Lindsay Vonn (Women's skiing), many BMX-ers, snowboarders, every sport basicly. Aswell as RedBull Air.
Hell of a pilot! Farking amazing stuff
excellent pilot with great gear. aweeeeeeeesome
I had such a vivid dream I did this last night and my palms are still sweating thinking about it
I'm trust you guys, but there is no total picture when you see the ground and the whole flip uncutted... however, it's still amazing. :)
i didn't even know it was physically possible to do back flips on a helicopter... AND i never thought helicopter can be consider extreme sport. you Red Bull guys just keeps me proving i don't know jack sh!t!

I'm 4,731,684 views out of that 5 million up there. Plus 1 more now. You damn right it's an addiction.

MBB Bo-105. German helicopter. Now part of Eurocopter. This helicopter model has been replaced by the EC135.
I want one...that has to be the coolest ride.
i saw this guy today at an air show in germany, i worked there
amazing performance, really
@faryn5 ur dad was right..in a way.

The old HH-53 could roll, and this was in the 70's

red bull is like that one cool teacher in the whole school. When all else fails, redbulls says yes
I. DIG. THIS.
:D exceptional flying imho!
Forget Redbull.... This is what German Engineering and a damn good pilot do :D :D

greetz from switzerland
That drink is poison, but I'll chug a couple if they keep using the profits to fund amazing stuff like this!
OKé holy shit man
new extreme sport is gonna be flying heli
it's going to be busy if everybody wants to do this
keep up the good work Red Bull
on some helis you can change the incline of the blades so you can be upsidedown and still be flying. he may be changing them half way through
nice touch... your loughing on his account ...love this...
@Reptile656 It's actually not scary. It's an incredible adrenaline rush. It's incredibly fun. Like a roller coaster. It's a different world and almost puts you in an hypnotic state.

Nothing like watching this chopper in person!!!
Very well presented!
This is dynamo...Fantastic in every way...Save to favs...

damn that is a huge amount af energy to deal with! the blades act likke a gyroscope! you get the point, bearings can breake..
