Isn't it great how much you learn about the best way to do a job once you are finished. ;)
Howdy Stu! That's exactly what I love about it. Steel ideas from what others did, refine them for what your doing, and by the time you finish your actually have a pretty good system. Then share it with others and let the cycle start again. Thank you for your contributions! Looking forward to your meetup. For others reading this, Stu from Dangar Marine will be at Seeker on Sept 21 for a meetup between 1 and 4 pm. You are welcome to attend. Please join us.
I've never heard you say "you've only got one chance to do it right the first time" so often!
I thought the slogan was "we do it right because we do it three times"
:p
All kidding aside, I love the knowledge you are sharing!
A few years of learning by trial and error plus a huge dollop of grit and determination have been condensed and edited together in a fascinating 24 min video. I continue to be amazed at your output Doug!! Seeker is looking so good in her new grey coat. :D
Doug, I think this should be mandatory viewing for anyone working with steel projects, be they cars, boats, planes or trains etc... You may literally be saving some viewers weeks/months of their time on their own projects ! Seeker is looking quite presentable now, so maybe you can start charging visitors ( who don't offer to volunteer time working on it ) for a donation to a Tulsa charity ( I'd suggest the hungry workers pizza or taco foundations ) ?
i rented a industrial compressor/sand blaster once did 3 pickups in 1 evening it even took the grease off around the steering box. worked great $75 for 1 day but every building/house was covered in sand. the rental center let me use their leather blasting hood/suit. ppg makes a metal etching acid for bare metal after blasting it's designed to prevent road salt oxidizing metal from scratches/dings in topcoat. your project has come along way
It's been interesting to see your process develop over the past several years. There's a wealth of knowledge and experience in this video.
Love how positive you are Doug. Congrats on getting to where you are with this. I remember starting to watch these videos when you started bending the first piece of steel. Really excited for you. Keep up the great work.
One of the best instructional videos I've seen on any topic. How come there is never enough time to do it right but always enough time to do it over.
the boat is looking better and better nearly every day, well done Doug....
Dude im three minutes in and i think ur nuts....thanks for teaching me its utterly impractical. Cheers.
Man your videos are a gold mine of quality information
Glad you like them!
Doug, the world is changing-----you didn't just "get it done" when it came to paint and prep. Amazing.
Thank you for making this video. Sharing your lessons learned is so kind
Painting this thing seems like it was such a mission
You did it all Doug. I've been watching you since the start. Awesome!!
Hey Doug, I dissed on one of your other vids when your compressor engine went south but after watching this I am full of admiration for your tenacity and I take it all back. Rust never sleeps as the saying goes but with all that prep it'll be dozing for many years to come. Cheers
I trust what you say Doug.....because you actually do the hard work.....and the SV Seeker looks Amazing.......Have A Great Weekend
There are a hundred ways to get the same job done, but I give a lot more of a listen to the folks that have been in the arena.
Yes, Best to know from the real folks who been there and done it....I Love all the Details & Facts you told us over the years......Nothing easy
about explaining hundreds of details.....Excellent Teaching Thxs Doug
The *_why_* you do it the *_way_* you do it. Makes perfect sense. Thanks.
Yeah, but change a couple of variables and another way makes perfect sense.
If someone would have told me that I would own an industrial compressor like that I would have laughed. As a matter of fact I decided about a year ago I am leaving big Pharma and starting a welding/fabrication business that turned into a small engine repair business with a specialty in engine drive welders. I also decided we were going to offer dustless blasting so now I own two SCHRAAM industrial compressors and they are beautiful.
A great milestone! And a very comprehensive overview. This was the stage when someone looked at the boat and asked: Is it going to be a submarine?
I fucking love you Doug. You remind me of my Bering Sea Captain. "Can do"... the motto of the Seabees, seems to be the spirit of your channel. And goddamn right! It can be done.
Wow... "Hello... I'm Doug. And this is my Master Class!" :)
Been watching for a while now so I've learned vicariously along with you. But still love this ... well, it is a master class! Thank you!
I fight these same issues doing sand blasting on a vehicle, fixing rust problems. It's the only way to get at the rust, but the sand !
I find your videos to be excellent entertainment and inspirational. Makes as many sandblasting videos as you want. We will watch all of them.
It's like climbing mount Mount Everest .
What a feeling when it is all said and done 👍👏👏👏👏
Stan Williams. Love your work, this video will save hundreds of hours for people who are building in steel and maintaining boats
big help saving time and a total inspiration. GREAT videos!!!!
A lot of FUN! You made it easy for us. Thanks!
I USED A DRY ICE BLASTER ON MY 40' BOAT IT CAME OUT GOOD. DID THE PRIMER THE SAME DAY.. HE HAS A BIG BOAT LOTS OF WORK.
It's expensive and a cool solution. : ) ...but it will not profile steel so not good for an initial blast media.
Every time I see the wide shot of the boat I think "Why the heck did he make it so big!?'.
More power to you! Looking like a beautiful vessel.
ua-cam.com/video/Oao3mzjCOAY/v-deo.html
man you are so deep down the rabbit hole, i love it.
a real pearl of wisdom there, they're probably right for THEIR VARIABLES not necessarily for yours
Doug, I prefer this variety of video because I like keeping up with the project, but I don’t always have the time to follow your videos. This video is the sharing of wisdom, which I find to be fantastic, especially when shared ok UA-cam. Thanks!
I love vidios that call out the money mongers and highlight the people that help you along the way. Great vidios thank you.
Interesting video. I got a little lost around the third valve but that is me not your fault.
Never let anybody tell you how to do something. Except for the paint guys. They know what they are doing xD
But even they can't always agree. : )
I think it’s awesome to see Seeker setting on a sandy beach! Best of luck cleaning if up. Cool video, Thanks!
I used to sandblast for a job. we used to introduce the water at the nozzle. I was surprised to see that pot full of water but there you go.....
Haha I had not noticed the details of the sand pot in earlier videos. We had one just like that when I was growing up in our scrap pile. Not knowing what it was normally used for, I turned it into a giant dog feeder!
Doug you rock!! I been following since you had some steel plates on the floor!! Not building a boat any time soon, but have learn so much, about welding steel, aluminum, and so much thanks
Hi Tom Copland Again from Scotland, It has been a great education watching all you lads doing your blasting and stuff. I have built a wooden sand blast Cabinet For Dry Blasting. however it is 3Ft x 3 X 3. This is so that I can put a 1Cyl 2Cyl or 4Cyl marine engine in for Blasting Using glass, These are Small Engines, and I am looking forward to blasting my 10hp bukh. Thanks for all the videos you folks Do. However it is now on wheels, and I can do nothing as it it always raining here. Thanx.
Thanks 👍
Awesome. And I'll BET this guy's a MACHINIST from his vocab and all the engineering he did on this ..?
Definitely owns a lathe & a mill, & probably did some CNC in his lifetime. I love going to University of YT.
Actually I worked in IT. And I agree that UA-cam University is fantastic.
cool stuff
Holy shit that little animation at the end was kinda funny ...
I bet it's better than I realized bc it's hard to make out w they say.
You're helluva dude Doug. Enjoyed and learned watching Seeker come to be.
Copper slag is very good for blasting, and no risk of silicosis from it. Dont know if you have it in the US but here in the UK we have kiln dried and milled silver sand which is used for sand blasting, gives a very good finnish but a few good breaths of that is guaranteed to give you silicosis due to how fine it is and the very high silica content, most likely there is very low risk from that rather coarse river sand as it wont go deep into the lungs due to its size.
This is a fantastic video. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
You're an Awesome Ambassador for US Okies!
*Lots of good advise*
Thank you Doug. Great information. Take care and have a great week.
Thank you Doug, what a lot of useful advice. Have fun with Stu, great guy, Cheers Warren
Thanks for the video.
Very informative Doug when you get on the waves perhaps you should write a book about the journey. Keep up the good work a thumbs up from me.
Wisdom comes from watching SV Seaker on UA-cam.
Maybe a little knowledge, but Wisdom comes from giving your dream the time and energy it deserves.
Top video! Really great overview of practical painting. Keep it up Cpt. Seeker!
Wow what a project. Great job. And amazing content. Love the channel.
Love the videos and your channel i am a person that likes to have more than one interest and this is one of them
Well done and ignore Johnie Its obvious where he gets his kicks. I for one would never presume to build a boat or mess with that steel but I can appreciate sage advice given from knowledge gotten the hard way.
Great video doug
Thwbk you.
Great video! My kids love them too.
Double thumbs up from me. Love the condensed knowledge! Keep 'em coming
It annoys me you only have 145k subs, you should have 3mil +. I'm glad ive been part of the ride for so long.
I'm glad to have UA-cam were lots of other people can share what they have done. Wish there was more.
Excellent video. Very helpful information and advice here.
I know this way to late for this project, but has anyone ever tried to use the used garnet that water jets use to cut steel as a media for wet blasting? It would be mixed with whatever they were cutting, but it's a really fast cutting abrasive and could probably be had for free.
Really great episode and explanations sir! 🙂👌
Bugger, I had a Big Mac earlier, I’m gonna die, love it, great videos mate
Another plus is after you move your boat you can sell your land with inland beach.
I heard the compressor’s muffler bearing squeaking while running at full power. Maybe time to upgrade that bearing to a Cat D9 bearing to better handle the exhaust torque.
.."wired in a plug that 'taches' into our machine". Definitely done that...
Not long before she hits the water? Well its looking mighty fine in her undercoat. 👍☮
Still going to be a while... but she sure does look great!
@@JDeWittDIY your right, but its good viewing.
About 2 years...
Nice!
I'm so lazy that I have only a 16 Ft boat made of fiberglass..
Bingo!! Thanks Doug. Any advise is good advise. Some is just better than others. Appreciate all you do, but---where was Bart???? Did he get his a/c on?? lol
Wow, very useful info!
You really know what you are doing.
We'll, I at least know what I've done. : )
She is looking damn seaworthy! Been watching you since the start and it has been a great journey so far! Cheers from Texas!
Didn't see those bilge rats comin' ! Haha!
Awesome video. Feel like I’ve learned a lot.
I used to do auto body and paint dude you need a air less commercial painter or at least an airless painter the pick up sticks down in the paint can go buy 5 gallons Good God dude you will be there for ever painting that ship. You can buy a air less for about 135 at Homo Depot it will pay for itself nice job you have my respect wouldn't even know where to start on that one
You didn't watch the video did you : )
I did all I saw was a small syphon type paint gun in your hand
@@madmanmechanic8847 Turn the volume up and try again. : )
Went through it again turned up the volume never did see a commercial airless painting system with pick up in five gallons bucket of paint the only thing I saw was your two quart pot syphon feed lost me dude?
@@madmanmechanic8847 A variable is a trait that you and I both share but the value assigned to that variable is likely different. For example, T can represent Time in hours spent using a spray gun and be reflective of the skill. I have about 15 hours. You? Hmax can represent the Maximum Height of the work area. My Hmax is 16 feet. You? V can be the variation of the surface. My point is that you paint cars and you've done it for a long time. I have only started, I'm often working from scaffolding, and there is lots of Variation of the surface. And as a component of time spent on the blasting and cleaning the actual painting time is very small. Also a $135 gun from Home Depot will not spray zinc epoxy. You thinking only about car paint. And when we do start using an airless sprayer it will be because the variables have changed.
Thanks! Some good info!
Yep
Cant get enough of this channel .... I'm hooked ...god dam it... what cameras do you use...**** found it **** lol carry on
Looks great man keep up the good work
Count not be more true.. we had a water park and did thousands of square feet every year.. when you have that much, you need a blaster that takes an operator, and at least one guy shoveling media back in to the machine (recycle the stuff until you can not pick it up)... the $300 a day for compressor is a killer..
Hey Doug, why not put that compressor on the boat? It would make short work for lift bags.
That one is a tad big, but we have the VMAC. More that enough for lift bags.
Does anyone remember what that tool was called that they used to quickly measure/template the foam insulation to match the odd quadrilateral shapes where it needed to be fit before cutting? The closes thing I found is "multi angle ruler" but these are small, they had something that was able to extend to a much larger size.
It's homemade from 4 telescopic antennas, some wood blocks and bolts. You can get the antennas from Amazon: amzn.to/2Zg09SK
@@SVSeeker Thanks!
I am a big fan of the channel but watching videos from the past how will the cable that controls the rudder not slip on the wheel the rudder is attached to?
There are four cable clamps welded to the back of the rudder quadrant to clamp the cable to the quadrant.
That’s great! I’m building a boat of my own, great channel, can’t wait to see the final product!
Doug, there is one thing I do not understand. Is this process of sand blasting and painting a regular event with trawlers made of iron, like a maintenance routine? Or do you just do this to get an older boat in the water for the first time after being dry docked? In other words, will you be doing all this again after a period of time? YIKES!
I think the right answer is, it depends, If you take care of the coatings as ongoing maintenance, like the curise ships do then blasting the whole thing again is not needed for decades, and then hydroblasting (water only) can be used because the profile has already been cut into the steel.
What type of sand blaster do you use?
I have two of those sitting..parts?
You forgot the 1st rule of sand blasting. How ever how much sand/ media you think you need, triple it.
Working in industrial coatings, it never fails too amaze me just how much sad you actually use.
Hey friend! Have you done any videos on the financial aspect of this project? Like how much you have in materials?
ua-cam.com/video/Oao3mzjCOAY/v-deo.html
Got my McBurger in one hand, my blaster in the other... I'm gonna die anyways- so what was the asking price?? haha
Did you have any issues with your 1/2 inch hose cracking because of the thin hose walls?
Not at all.
Oh, crap! I thought I was building an immunity to McDonalds!
any gold in that sand? maybe setup a panning station and sell tickets :)
So......Doug......when you gonna be finished?..............HE HE.....just kidding
That's what she said....
How much life you getting out of those nozzles?
One nozzle for the whole boat and it's still in great shape. www.svseeker.com/wp/sv-seeker-2/sailboat/sand-blasting/

Wow, the only thing the sand blaster is missing is muffler bearings. 😁
