posting in case anyone wants to entertain my question. he highlighted about PM should focus on getting the right measurement of your product success, with examples like sales, engagement, and efficiencies. These numbers, however, are too generic and can be influenced by a multitude of factors.
In a company the size of amazon, there are always up to two dozens of teams from ops, product, marketing, to biz dev, who will try to claim that a boost in sales was due to their project, not yours.
So the question is, as a PM, how do you select the right KPI, that can prove to management that the boost is due to your feature, and not from the other business factors?
am a PM myself, n I face this issue on a daily basis

Hey Jayden. Thanks for the comments. Regarding your question, I would say that usually an average KPI which is actively tracked is influenced by up to 3 teams and not two dozen (e.g. a Sales KPI is most influenced by Product, Sales, and marketing; definitely not Ops or Biz Dev. Biz Dev would have their specific sales related KPI unrelated to sales to consumers). It is also important to remember that products vary, and industries are different, so of course there are exceptions to the above point. To further drill-down on the topic, it's important to understand at which point of the product-cycle you are measuring the KPI. If the marketing team has taken a proactive approach to drive sales, their actions can't be attributed to the product team, assuming the product has been launched a year ago (Marketing's KPI will be measured against a relevant post-launch baseline assuming all else is equal). Technically speaking there are tools which allow for this impact to be measured. This is done mostly by A/B testing the feature where the intended outcome is to statistically measure only the impact of that exact feature.

@@mamasitos007 "To further drill-down on the topic, it's important to understand at which point of the product-cycle you are measuring the KPI"... I think you nailed it with this statement. For example, if I introduced a new feature in my product and you advertise/market your product touting about the new feature and its benefits & post launch you measure acquisition KPI, I would say it could be tracked easily to that new feature, assuming all other parameters are constant. Let me know your thoughts. BTW, what a simple and informative packed presentation, kept me engaged. thanks.

@@logiclife77 yes, good example. It is also not uncommon for a KPI to be defined as a joint-goal between two teams. I would even argue that it forces collaboration which is almost always more efficient in driving a goal.
