Hey Pandora, so awesome that you love Band-Maid and want to build a playlist! Here's one thing you will absolutely NOT have to worry about: finding great songs. Their songwriting, led by lead guitarist Kanami Tono, is simply on another level. Their music forges together a blend of influences and genres to produce something truly unique and super-addictive. Their songs can be rockin', energetic, balladic, emotional, punk, pop(ish), jazzy, funky, serious, and sometimes all of these in the same song. Thrill is not a bad song to start with, but it was Band-Maid's first "break-out" song back in 2015. You'll be getting a lot of suggestions, but here are a few: Domination (live), Play (live), Warning (MV), Manners (MV or live), Black Hole (live), etc. If you like slow jams or ballads, try Daydreaming or endless story (both MVs) or the absolutely gorgeous Anemone (audio only). This 2015 video was the make-it-or-break-it video for Band Maid. In fact at this point Miku couldn't even play the guitar since she thought she was only going to be a vocalist in the band. However this video did so well they decided that Band-Maid was going to be a successful project and that gave them the exposure and financial wherewithal to get started. This is before Misa and Saiki started dressing Gothic. Band-Maid is Jimmy Page approved!

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. This is a difficult song to start with BAND-MAID, even though that's where most people start. It barely gives a hint of what they're capable of. The video isnt' even clear they're playing for themselves. They are :) They've pretty damned impressive, in particular at song structure and riff creation. This was written for them. Once their label allowed them to write their own stuff, it was lights out.
It was lights out for everyone else & lights on for those that discovered B-M :)

Your opinion is that this video is a difficult song to start with because it barely gives a hint of what they are capable of. That is true (IMO) but it is the beginning of Band-Maid in vids. Starting at the beginning gives you a better insight into the road they have traveled musically, from playing music they didnt write to where they are today.
Two members (MISA - Bass, Akane - Drums) are classically trained musicians who studied at the Tokyo Academy of Music while Kanami, the lead guitarist, has also been playing piano since the age of 3 or 4 but is concert standard (almost unbelievably, given her skills, she only switched to guitar about 10 years ago!) They all have superb musical ability as well as passion, a lack of ego and the drive to play real, in your face, Rock which is why they are THE best live Rock band on Earth right now. The only band I've seen that is playing live like bands I went to see in the 70's, such as Led Zeppelin or Sabbath or Zappa. Music they write themselves, real guitars, drums and bass played loudly and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals. They are all really close friends and know how to have fun together on stage, confident as they are in each others’ abilities and skills. They've revived the classic Rock sound and given the genre a much needed kick in the ass, as Babymetal have done for Metal. Future reactions I'd recommend, as they really shine brightest live, would be from the DVD they released in April 2020. This band is phenomenal. Let this sink in: perhaps this band's greatest strength is their creative, complex yet catchy songwriting - and yet Thrill is not a song written by them (and you can tell). This song comes from early in their career where they lacked creative control and - as I think is common in Japan - had most all of their own songs rejected by their label in favor of those written by more established songwriters, like Thrill. This was not a bad thing, as it enabled the band to learn more about songwriting and finding their own sound, and in the case of Thrill going viral, it literally enabled them to get enough recognition to continue on and eventually wrest creative control. But literally the more you listen to them, the better they get - until you realize they are one of the best rock bands to come around in decades (and to my mind, easily the best all-female rock band to ever come around). They are important to music.

Band-Maid can do anything from thrash rock to acoustic ballads. A good example of their diversity comes on the double feature video: "Manners" / "Black Hole". "Manners" is funky groove, while "Black Hole" is frantic, unrelenting speed. And the bass can be heard clearly in both -- one of their many great points (Misa the bassist is the favourite of many fans ... but then so is Akane the drummer, and Kanami the lead guitarist, and Saiki the vocalist, and Miku the pigeon .... er, lyricist, backup vocals and rhythm guitar -- and band founder and costume designer and spokesperson).

BAND-MAID is celebrating its 8th year of formation. BAND was formed by a girl who came to Tokyo from a local city of Japan to become a singer when she was about 20 years old. Five unique and talented girls gathered. The members have not changed, and they are continuing their efforts to improve their playing ability. They are constantly writing new songs and cool songs. Three new songs were released at the end of October.

This is the song/video that started it all for Band-Maid, and the rest is history. They are another excellent all-female rock band, specifically hard rock with some influences of jazz, soul, funk. Their style is unique.

Typical way this works when this is the first song you ever hear by them. (note that they didn't write this song - now they write all their own songs.)
1- Oh, cute girls in maid outfits. Probably sound terrible if they rely on a gimmick, or maybe they're faking it.
2- This is a great song. It rocks! Still not sure they're really playing though - that guitar solo was too good.
3 - You see a live clip next of say, Real Existence Live from their channel, and then it smacks you upside the head - holy crap these girls can really play!!
4 - You progress through present day, gradually figuring out that they have gotten exponentially better over the years, and they are now the best hard rock band in the world. Don't believe that? Keep listening to them and find out. They are one of the hardest working bands I've seen, and that girl in the pigtails? She started the band, but that guitar was mere decoration in this video - she couldn't really play it then. Now she's a very good rhythm guitarist and still does great background vocals, and writes all of the lyrics. That lead guitarist - she's a phenomenal player, and yet that's not her main strength. That would be songwriting, and not since Lennon/McCarthy (my opinion) has there been such a run of awesome songs (way over 100 now) that are all great and many flat out incredible, and ranging from ballads/power ballads, speed metal, 70's hard grooving rock (my faves), prog, pop/punk and sometimes all of this in the same song. Recommend you go sort of chronologically from here - go with Real Existence Live next, then Onset to get a better idea of their instrumental prowess and just go on through their catalogue. Their live videos are usually better, but the Blooming, Bubble and Manners MV's are all some of my faves. Typically, trying to pick your favorite maid or favorite song of theirs is like picking your favorite child - although harder. Their music is very positive and uplifting without making you want to stick your finger down your throat too - they have a magic, in that you always feel better (really) after listening to them. Happier...ready for your day. BM is a drug and I don't care how addicting.

Saw Band Maid on a Japanese Music Show JMelo in 2013 or 2014 and I said to myself "wow" these girls are different. And I found myself coupled and hitched to they're bullet train ever since. Rock beyond metal...without Rock, there would be no metal! And this is the new blueprint of Rock forever a boysclub now "Dominated" by unlikely hero's of Japan's BandMaid! More recent videos are much better than this song. Kanami, aka Kanamincho, lead guitar, is a musical genius. She writes the music, presents it to the band then they all make it the absolute best possible. Misa, bass, writes all of her bass parts and you will find out just how good she is in future videos. Miku, guitar and vocals, founded the band when she was working in a maid cafe. It was her idea to have a band play hard rock while wearing maid outfits. Jimmy Page was at one of their shows and wanted to meet Akane who plays drums. He called her the reincarnation of John Bonham. Saiki, lead vocals, refuses to wear an apron or anything looking like "maid" clothing. Her range is amazing as well as being able to add emotion to her singing. No two songs are alike with this band.

Go find it and work your way back. The old fans are maybe too attached to the good old stuff but I guess the women themselves would rather you tried their latest work.

They just get better from here. Their next video Real Existence, I think, is much better. But if you watch one of their newer ones you can see just how far. I'll warn you though, they are hard rock but they don't stick to one sound. Rock core with punk, metal, blues, even jazz sometimes.

For 8 years now these highly talented ladies are on the road as a band, a catalog with well over 100 songs and not one of them can be called "bad". It offers variety, inventiveness and almost every song has this catchiness factor and is still so complex that you can even after repeated listening still hear something new.
For quite many they are at the top of the rock genre and I don't have a single argument to contradict that. Until I came across exactly this video by chance a few years ago, I belonged to those who claimed with conviction that 'rock is dead'. Well, after this experience, this conviction was a thing of the past. Sounds exaggerated and unbelievable? Then I simply recommend 'Domination', 'Freedom' and 'Play' in their respective live versions, or from their music videos 'Real Existence', which is the direct follow-up single of this video here.
This pigeon-hole is deep as hell and highly addictive if you're into this kind of music. Don't say we didn't warn you. :)

Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual solo.
