Dean of Trinity College Cambridge Dr Michael Banner has based the compensation on claims made by slave owners when the trade was first abolished in 1833.
Kevin says: "Can we dismiss this madness?"

In 1833 20 million pounds (around 17 billion pounds today) was set aside to be shared out among 46,000 claimants, awarded by a ten man Slavery Compensation Commission. The slaves themselves received nothing.
The people of this country only paid off the debt in 2015 some 182 years later. Why the hell were the people of this country picking up the tab in the first place?
Alright, and the world owes the Royal Navy many trillions of pounds for stopping the slave trade.

When we committed to ending slavery, the spending on it was 44% of the Treasury's funding that year.
The usa had slavery because it was a carryover from england.

Everyone loves free stuff. I'm mixed-race(1/2 Indian, 1/4 Jamaican, 1/4 English), i figure that we(the British) could've just poisoned all the slaves in Jamaica and taken that land for our own use, that would be helping us to this day obviously to have that land as ours, but we gave that land to them instead. So how much is that land worth? If that land is not considered reparations(and it is), and we should give them money, then why shouldn't they give us back the land that we took from the Spanish, that they invaded? We took it fair and square, and gave it to the people currently living there in Jamaica, so. If we're gonna entertain that idea at all, then it could only be a trade, we give them money they leave the country and give it back to us. I think that land is probably worth more than £200 billion altogether, it would earn us that much in just a few years and then on and on.
Excellent points. Another thing that I ponder (though it is rather deep and existential) is that individuals, such as yourself, wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for British colonialism in the first place!

The idea that white people must pay compensation to those descended from black slaves sets a dangerous precedent. This is punishing people because of their race. Only about 1% of white people owned slaves, so why should 100% pay compensation. Crime statistics show the number of crimes committed by ethnic groups. How about the ethnic groups with the highest crime levels compensating the rest of the population? They might argue this is unfair, as only a minority of that group committed the crimes; only a minority of the white population owned slaves, but they are all expected to pay repatriations. If it is all right for white people to pay reparations. Then, it is all right for communities who commit more crimes, to compensate the rest of society.

NO . Dr David Starkey must be pleased he's nothing to do with Cambridge University anymore. When younger I was in awe of people who had a University education, now I feel sorry for people who spend four years learning how not to think for themselves.

Maybe Britain should ask for reparations from Rome for the invasion of Britain taking English slaves in the process,or how about Denmark and Norway when the Vikings invaded and took slaves from England, or the middle east they bought English slaves at slave markets.There are more but you get the point.
