I appreciate that you go over so many details and vocabulary for beginner riders. On top of that you are sticking to your guns as a Sportster fan, reviewing them in 2022. While other channels that have grown on following because they started with a Sportster model (and kept on upgrading from there) have long forgotten about it.
Thanks for explaining at the end of video, the most iconic Harley ever made. When I started it was Triumph, BSA, Norton, etc, at 650, 750 cc's. Then came the 883 Sportster. The new American 2 wheeled hot rod. I still ride a 90 XL at 72 years old. 🇺🇸
Four days ago I bought a black 2022 Forty-Eight which is my 24th motorcycle I have been blessed with in my short 73 years. Really like this bike and it’s nimble handling. Has a short circumference turning radius. You can turn it on a dime and get 9 cents change. I have ridden lot of sport bikes so the stock handle bars on the 48 are perfect for my type of riding at 5’ 9” and 170lbs. Thanks for the review.
I bought my 48 new in 2014. It's vivid black and made in KC where I live. The Plant is closed nowadays. My 48 has 26,000 miles on the clock and still looks and runs like new! I rode the rubber off of the original Michelin's and trying to do the same to my new Dunlop's.
Dropping these for the plasticky liquid Sportsters still seems like a boneheaded move. These 48s have an authentic, raw feel that the M8s (good as they are) just lack.
I bought the Vivid Black 48 this weekend as my second bike. I also have a 2016 Road King that I bought new. I love the Sportster model and have put 96,000 miles on an 06 1200. I really wanted another one before they are gone forever. The 2 gal. tank is a problem for me. But I will get over it because it looks great.
You are absolutely right about headlights. Led is soooooooooo necessary. I sold my Road King so I could get a 2018 Sportster 48. Seat, exhaust and Led lights are on my to do list. I have the seat and this weekend the mufflers are going on. I can’t believe that HD hasn’t seen the light yet (sorry….it was too good to pass up). Great review. Keep it up.
@@MarkSmith-nr6ic Hi Mark. Old age and a mild stroke have taken their toll. The 48 is fun to drive, a few hundred pounds lighter, lower center of gravity, and just looks plain cool! It is such a nimble and easy to control bike and the new seat and the mini apes and forward controls make it a joy to ride. Fortunately in my area of southern NH gas stations are on almost every Corner. If the 2.1 gallon tank becomes a problem I might consider changing it to a 4 gallon tank for a little more price of mind. Have a great motorcycle season and stay safe while getting your wind therapy😁
@@stevehanley4434 thanks Steve. I’m almost 70, riding & traveling on motorcycles since ‘68. Harleys for 40 years, touring everywhere, even Alaska. medical issues convinced wife I shouldn’t tour long distance anymore. still want to, but a 48 would be great for most of my riding around Louisville. safe travels Sir😎

LEDs! Purchased a 2018 48 Special for my son last week and the dealership is going to present to him after his riding class. He's 6'2" but didn't dwarf the bike too badly when he sat on it in the showroom. He doesn't have a clue I purchased it for him and keeps bugging me about Honda Shadows 😄
I just bought 3 months ago. Used 1300 miles. It's a fun ride. Good starter bike. Though a small tank, I like the fact that the fuel light comes on when low. I love it!!
I just picked up a 2022 Sportster 48 XL1200X today. The bike is awesome and the look is killer in my opinion! Can't wait to do some upgrades to improve on performance and looks. I am so glad that I made this purchase!
@@j.vosier6786 The 1200 has a lot of torque and can handle high revs. I can cruise at 70mph in highway traffic with no problem. More than enough power for my use. My primary purpose for my bike is a daily cruiser that is fun and reliable, and I get that with my sportster.
Me again! I have ridden everything on the floor and that includes Triumphs. I would not trade my 48 for anything! Gail's was updating my bike in 2020. They gave me a Live Wire and told me to have some fun. I watched the MC Commute video the night before. The highway is a block from the Dealer. You do the math! 😎
I have a 2022 sportster 48. It is so customizable. I have Vans and hines big radius 2 into 2 exhaust. Will be changing air cleaner, wheels with smt's, did my own tuning. Easy. I wish I had 6 gears, but 5 is manageable. Looking also going to a chain. Sprocket center should help me with this. Once I put an open air cleaner, I will retune. I use the Sceamin Eagle tuner. I will keep my 48, as it will be a collectable with all other EVO's.
I bought one back in October of 22. I'm a bigger dude.... freaking love the bike. outside of 4 things... halogen bulbs actually get so hot it melts the cap over the bulb, bars, stock solo seat and tank size. I feel like for the price point on this bike, harley definitely slipped up on a few comforting items for style points. 10/10, though, in my book. I've always been a fan of sportster models over any bagger.
had a lot of different bikes, the Sportster has always been a very good purchase. last one i had was 2007, i like what they've offered on this model this year. excellent info in this review.
Love the 48. Sure new sportster but it's not a real sportster. Love the vibration and great sound with the Screaming Eagle Really sad to see it go ..iconic Harley.
Always liked the Sportster. Unfortunately it never quite met the criteria I was hoping for to buy it. Having been a crotch-rocket rider for +30yrs I still want the hp. Paying for stage kits after signing my life away isn't something I'm willing to do. Sad to see it go if that's what happens.
I'm looking at the 48...had to sell my 2017 streetglide special because of financial stuff..and I been missing it..thanks for sharing and keep up the great work...Lance
Great look at the 48. Thanks. I understand your point about halogen vs LED lighting but I really don't like the looks of LED headlights. Do you know if there are any aftermarket LED headlights that are made to look more like traditional headlights?

My '09 is metallic Mirage Orange Pearl on Vivid black with two different colored pinstripes on the 4.5G tank and the fenders too. Proper solid logos on the tank, not cheap decal rubbish. Chrome heads, chrome engine covers, proper tail light and license plate mount. I'm running Shinko SR777 wide whitewall tires and other upgrades now, but my point today is that the factory bike looked 20x better than any of these new ones that can't even go 100 miles. I just do not understand the "everything has to be black" thing. Does everyone want to be Batman or something?
I think Harley should make the Sportster forever. As for lighting, the ability to see is the most important safety aspect of any vehicle. L.E.D.S. should be on every vehicle!!! Thanks for a very helpful and informative video. 😁
Great review. I love the look of the 48, but I'm very happy with my 883 that I bought last year. I do wonder if the rear shocks on the 48 are better than the rear shocks on the 883. The specs on the HD web site have different details for rear shocks for both the sportster models.
It's nice to see a customer base on this exceptional machine, the 48 is dear to me as it introduced me to Harley. Defenetly, specially if your sending the bike to rest for good some factory LEDs Good video man
Gonna miss the sportster evo a lot. I’ve had 2 of them both 1200 and I’ve still got one of them. Love the bike and love engine but I’m excited to see what’s ahead. Just hope it can ride and sound like the old evo.
just picked up same bike . so far so . first harley. older guy 50. getting adjusted . feeling it out during break in for 1000 miles . good combo of color flow.
As long as I can remember Harley is one of my favorite motorcycle..my first Harley was 883..so so sad..it's been the heart and soul on most old Harley riders...I love to take it easy after a long day from work...well good luck to all be safe and have fun. Sometimes changes not always a good thing specifically if you have something special going...why throw away your legacy...💐💔❓
Great review! My first sportster ('01 XL1200 Custom) is my 4th motorcycle & second Harley. Just got it a couple weeks ago; wish I would've done it a lot sooner. I hate to see them fade away.
I guess I did not notice the size of the forks. I think it would look great with tall bars like the iron 1200. You got the thumbs up you are asking for. LOL, thanks for the video.
I have the blue 2022 48 and it is by far the best looking bike I have ever owned, did swap the pipes and seat immediately (Cobra Neighbor Haters 3") and a saddlemen. Love how customizable the bike is, the forward controls felt weird for a little, but its much more agile with the forward controls (in my opinion) once you swap the seat the whole riding experience changes and I can now ride for hours as opposed to an hour or 2 at max. next upgrade is mini apes and a sissy bar! If you are thinking of getting one then I'd say pull the trigger they are worth every penny!!!
So sad we don’t have new ‘proper’ Sportsters in the UK any more. I’ve owned three over the years and loved them all. And yes, all new Harleys should come with LED lighting!
I have always liked Harley Davidson motorcycles, but as we all know just about all motorcycle manufacturers have/are moving towards liquid cooling with gear drive components for ease of maintenance and computer assistance functions. The shift to HD’s Revolution Max format is new to HD but standard with other manufacturers.
I started out on a Sportster many years ago, and have had so many Harley's since that I cannot easily count them. Right now I have a big ol' Streetglide & the Mrs doesn't want to tour any more, so I want to trade down for a Sportster just to have something light & fun to get around town on myself, and since they don't make 'em any more I REALLY want one while they are still relatively easy to get (used).
Bought a new iron 1200 in 2020 just because they’re going away. I find myself on it more than the street glide and the XR1200 for bombin around town. Too bad new air cooled sportys will be a thing of the past soon.
Just bought a 22'48 in Vivid. Sporty has always been a fav, and given what you mentioned about it's likely demise, i thought "why not?" Affirmative on LED's; mine does not have the ignition switch, however - straight keyless like th other models.
Love the video! Just purchased this exact same bike 2022 model as my first bike purchase! Love the blue! Got a Custom speedo that's mostly digital with gas Guage and digital gear identifier! Somewhat difficult finding more customization parts because it's so new, so throw me some links that I can find more parts for it. Would love to either sit closer to handlebars with new reach seat and/or raise/bring closer the handlebars. I'm 5'4 so it's a bit of a reach for me, however i still Love it!
I was all set to buy one until I realized it’s only a 2.1 gallon tank. That means I’m putting gas in every 60 miles to keep from going to reserve. I can’t believe that actually went through production. I’d go as far as to say that that is a serious safety concern. Still looking at other HD’s, just lost me on this one.
Bought a 22 forty eight last spring in vivid black. I 100% agree about the lights. Getting ready for the next season I bought full leds from hogwerkz, cost about $450 for headlamp, front turn signals and rear brake lights. Can’t put a price on better road visibility and being seen by others. Looking to do an exhaust and air cleaner in a couple months.
I also went less on my 22 vivid black 48. I used a sunpie for the head light. I also put ground flood lights on it since I ride home from work at 4:30am every morning. All my lights are less. I need to find a inside fender brake light that flashes. Haven't found anything yet.
Me again! I already had a spray can of K&N air filter oil. I sprayed the engine and it looks better than new! It smells like play dough, but I expect that to fade over time.
Overall, which is a better bike and easier and cheaper maintenance, the "48" or the Iron 883? Which of the two has more availability of after market parts? Can I request the the 3.3 gallon on the "48"? Why is HD getting rid of this iconic model?
I got a 2013 48 from the insurance auto auctions that had been stolen and stripped. Took it from a rolling frame with no lights tines and no handlebars to a riding motorcycle. And it only cost me $1000 more than it would’ve been to get a used running one. 😎

Im 100% getting a forty-eight in black in the next couple of weeks.
Me again! I already had a spray can of K&N air filter oil. I sprayed the engine and it looks better than new! It smells like play dough, but I expect that to fade over time.
Definitely trying to get 48 in my future
Great bike! Great review as always. All bikes should come with LED lighting!!!!
I was saying that in the dealership in 2009.
Thanks again as always for another great and informative review. I look forward to you review on the new 2022 Nightster
I can’t wait to get my hands on that thing. As of right now I’ve heard Timms is only getting 1 though. Hopefully that changes.
Thank you for the video. How would someone go about putting passing lights on a 48?
Great bike. Wish it’d still be there when I go to buy it.
Been looking at this for a while now as my second bike. Like the front end look
I have a 2016 48 and love it!
In Thailand is only $237 for color options. But base price is already over $20,000 but that’s isn’t changing my mind to get one in August
Overall, which is a better bike and easier and cheaper maintenance, the "48" or the Iron 883? Which of the two has more availability of after market parts?
Can I request the the 3.3 gallon on the "48"?
Why is HD getting rid of this iconic model?
i bought one 2022 and i will probably keep it forever
This would ve a great upgrade from my xg500 but I just hate the tank size. Wish it was at least 3 gallons instead of 2.1
Great review! Come on Harley we need LED’s on all bikes!!
New Sporty is being announced next week, let's see if they heard us.
I got a 2013 48 from the insurance auto auctions that had been stolen and stripped. Took it from a rolling frame with no lights tines and no handlebars to a riding motorcycle. And it only cost me $1000 more than it would’ve been to get a used running one. 😎
I used to hate the fatbob but it grew on me! Just like the road glide lol
Same!!
I’m trying to decide between a 1200 and an 883.
