Just a beautiful motorcycle. Sportster is the only retro-classic that is still the best. I am 62 years old, 6' tall and they turn my head whenever I see one. Go for a ride, park in garage, then sit back and admire it.
    Love your format. Thanks

I do feel HD need something different to answer the Indian Scout. I love the air cooled, pushrod engine. But I shudder to considering purchasing an automobile from the late 80s design. The Sportster Evo motor has been updated, but again, look at the Scout.
I'm hopeful the new versions will grow on me. I am optimistic!

Have a 48 Special. Awesome bike. True HD sound, rumble, and vibrations. The 48 has a HUGE rider triangle. I've ridden several new Softail models and they all are cramped so bad. I'm 5' 9" and I can stretch way out on it. Makes it feel much larger.

I have a 2013 Sportster 72 and I love it. Little bit of old school chopper with the skinny 21” front wheel, long forks and finished in one of the optional “Hard Candy Custom” big metal flake colors. Plenty of low end torque and higher rpm horsepower. The 1200cc v-twin sounds excellent with aftermarket exhaust and a tuner. With the mini-ape handle bars, the rider triangle is comfortable. 2.1 gallon tank requires plenty of stops for fuel but they’re quick and you’re back on the road in no time. Really good review. Absolutely superb. Ride safe...

I had a hard candy black/gold one with Progressive 444 shocks, mini apes, SE stage i and leather seat looked awesome and as you say a work of art. I sold summer gone for a softail Low Rider. I miss that 48 a lot but it was so restricting in terms of comfort, distance you could travel and crucially for me stability at higher speeds. If money was no issue I would still have that bike sitting alongside the Low Rider. Nice review and great sounding pipes.

Always had kind of sporty naked bikes. Last 2 bikes were the Ducati Streetfighter and Yamaha MT-10. Never had a HD or even a cruiser. Did my first ride on a HD Sportster 48 one year ago. Really liked it, the ride and the looks. But the sales guys told me this is a small bike compared to my body size. Perhaps I should also try bigger bikes. Then did rides on Softails. Street Bob, Fat Bob and Fat Boy.
Ended up buying the 2019 Fat Boy. Best looking HD in my opinion. The ride is very relaxed, not rushed. Love it. But when I am at the dealer I still look at the 48.

i am a great fan of v&h short shots, but after seeing your mini-grenades video of the 883, my whole perspective from all these years have changed, and especially how mr.darcy explains that the mini-grenades has got that deep rumble rather than the popping sound, you know i wished you could have made the same mini-grenade video on a 1200cc like a forty eight or custom, then the sound would be even more wicked!

    Hello from Germany,
first i wanna say i am am a big fan of the way your reviews are made. Keep up the good work!
Now my opinion concerning the bike: The Sportster models in general are essy to ride, perform very well, absolutely nimble etc.
But: They are nothing for a tall person. I am 6' 2" and 225 pounds (for metric people: 1,88m and 102 Kg) and every Sporty looks like a pocket bike underneath me. It seems to be really tiny. Furthermore the tank is to small and i don't like wheels of cast aluminium very much. I prefer spoke wheels.
But i think the sporty is a good bike for smaller persons (male and female), especially if they are beginners. And last but not least, the sportys are the best performing bikes in the harley family

I like the style of this bike. Obviously the bike is limited to short distance hops, but I could happily ride within those limitations a lot of the time. I'd go from burger bar to burger bar, providing each burger bar had a petrol filling station. But then I'd get so fat so fat that I'd outgrow the bike and need to get a Heritage Classic to haul myself around.

I absolutely love the look of this bike… fun ride, too. I’m very much considering this with the Billiard Blue tank… between that and a Black Dyna Street Bob with a 103… bigger bike but not as much of a nimble bar hopper with this killer styling. Neither are girls bikes considering girls can ride whatever the hell they want. Also, I’m a fairly experienced rider and don’t find the ‘48 too small whatsoever. Cheers

I'm getting one of these as a new rider and I have some questions.
How do you hang on? The seat seems like it doesn't have much of a shelf to hold you in place, and you can't grip the tank with your knees without cooking your legs on the engine. I know you hold onto the handlebars but you don't want to be holding on too tight because they're also how you steer.
Maybe these questions will seem silly once I take the permit course but I thought I would ask.

Do you guys know if the front wheel of the 48 can be put on the Iron 883? Im thinking of adding Shinko 130/90-16 in the front and Shinko 170/70-16 in the back. According to people I read who have done it, they claim they fit without having to adjust anything.
