That was very instructive for the culture in the videogames, I really liked these comparaisons. Thank you ! I'm currently play again Outrun 2006 with the fanmade patch FXT, which give the custom rumble of Xbox controller and force feedback wheels for arcade lovers on PC and some new features, a HD HUD is still in development.
There is also AGA version of Out Run made by retro comminity. This version not only blows up awful OCS version but even better than the 4 th generation console versions. But it requires very powerful Amiga
It's not fair to compare PC Engine with Sega Master System. Master System was a older machine, and although both have 8 bit CPU, PC-Engine/Turbografx had far superior sound engine and 16 bit graphics processor. Even it was marketed at USA and Europe as a 16 bit machine. Also, Out Run for Master System was ported in 1987 just in the first years of the machine, and Out Run for PC-Engine was ported in 1990...
The procesor was 8 bit Zilog Z80, however the sound chip was a Yamaha 16 bit, the only one version of msx that had 16 bit instructions was the TurboR with the Z800 chip but it came in 1990, a few years later after the master system.
Master System versions supports the paddle controller for analog steering. Just imagine back in the day having this setup: -Japanese Master System -Japanese Outrun cart -paddle controller Spectrum Out Run, is that like the best spectrum music? Damn!
Two thumbs up for a great video showing each version and with. Background info in the video is a nice addition to cover differences of each port of the game itself.
While I'm 100% sure that the Master System could do better, you have to acknowledge the fact that even though the PC Engine has an 8-bit CPU, it also possesses a 16-bit GPU. That's like if you stacked the Dreamcast against the likes of the 3DO, 32X, Saturn, or PlayStation because they all have 32-bit CPUs. Great video by the way!
this is true but the real downer is the the PC Engine version is smoother and plays better than the Mega Drive version. I'm a massive MD fan so it's sad to see something liek Out Run being better on a lesser system.
I love the Mega Drive/Genesis too, but I'd say I'm a bigger Saturn fan (if my username is anything to go by). I feel you though. Why is there lag in Sonic Jam? The Saturn should be more than capable of handling Genesis games. Oh, and my one major gripe with MD OutRun is the layout. I strongly prefer Overseas.
SaturnVDP1 I'm using the Japanese game so I'm guessing that's why the MD Out Run was the japanese layout or is the Genesis and Euro MD game like this as well? Saturn, my No.1 game console of all time and I own a lot of different consoles and games.
An "Arcade-perfect" port of this was a pipe dream back in those old times, although the PCE version was pretty neat. Still, the Mega Drive port was solid and playlable, same with C=64 port. Biggest let down has to be the Amiga port though.
I can remember when I bought Sega Ages on the Saturn on a bit of a whim from a secondhand shop back in the late 90's. The world (and I) had moved on to polygon racers by that time, but the first time I fired up Outrun and the realisation dawned on me that I finally owned a more-or-less arcdae perfect port of the game... well I was pretty blown away.
Great video. I used to play Outrun when it came out in the arcade. Next was the Genesis (Megadrive) version.. I'm now playing the arcade version at home. Never saw the Ps2 version.. Looks pretty good.
That's not the 'original' sound. I played this game to obsession, back in the day, and still have cassette tapes of the MS music. And that's NOT the version I had, by a long chalk.
dat Amiga intro, is like a sign that it's going to be an incredible port, an incredibly shitty port. The Saturn is the best port in my opinion, not only is arcade perfect, but also has a few cool features like 60 FPS mode or an arrange soundtrack.
2018, and people still judge the PC Engine capabilities by it's processor's 8bit... "so, that's why Nintendo 64's 64bits CPU is better than XBox's 32bits CPU"... yeah... but, no...
I was about to asking for this game when I realised you had already made a video of it :). It would be really good to try to contact some of the devs of ports of any game to tell you how it was to work back in that time. Anyway, amazing battle as always. Keep on rocking!
That Amstrad CPC version is an embarrassment. If you look carefully in the footage you can even see points where it does not even look like the lines in the road are moving, parts where the road is suddenly offset compared to where it was and other moments where the other cars are off the road completely.
i have a suggestion for future episodes of battle of the ports. Put the scrolling text on the bottom of the screen and what system it is for on the top. Then i can watch the gameplay footage while I´m reading without having to adjust my eyes all the time. I think everyone else would also agreed. Keep the good stuff coming Yakumo! And thanks a million for uploading all of the old Retro Core! What a nice present!
You know, I was thinking that myself when checking the videos last night on my TV. It was a real pain trying to watch the footage and read at the same time. I think in the next video I will put the scrolling text at the bottom and the system name at the top.
settingbros Retro Core Yes, the 'system name' obscures the car graphic . Although in the MD and Amiga's case it was probably for the better mind - lol ;-)
Grew up with the Master System Port. But Fell in love with the game all over again on the Saturn. It's a staple that never leaves the console. While Outrun is 2nd place to the Ridge Racer Series as my favorite Racer/Driving game. Outrun still wins on Sentimental value.
I never did beat it, I don;t think anyone in my house, or visiting ever could. I remmeber how gleeful I was when I finally beat the saturn version. But the Master System version remains unbeaten. Also the arcade version was unlockable in the XBOX Version of outrun 2. I don't know if it's a port or emulation of the Arcade or a Port of the Dreamcast port though.
Found this now ^^; As I said elsewhere, my favorite for "remembering the arcade" is the Sat version, but when it comes to spend hours on it and beat it to death I always go with PC Engine, the gameplay is really perfectly balanced for an home "I don't want to rip quarters out of your pockets" experience. From the look of it the PS2 version "seems" very playable, but I am one of those bothered by the polygon based graphics ^^; P.S And I have to say again there are no better "let's compare" videos on the net, excellent job!
You will certainly have a blast doing so ^_^ As you know an accident would jeopardize the possibility of finishing the course (specially down the line, where you will need every single second) and hitting the breaks too much (thus losing many precious seconds) is not advisable either, but in the conceited last laps you some times find yourself in "high traffic" scenarios, often in the middle of a difficult series of turns, so what I like to do is to decelerate by just releasing the accelerator button (or by gently using the breaks) standing just a nose behind the car in front of me (while keep "racing", not losing much speed as I keep that car speed at least) correct my trajectory and blaze past it. Some other times during long turns as you drift toward the right or left, you can dodge cars thanks to very tight controls that allow you to calibrate your drift as to even pass between two cars without accidents or getting out of bounds. On the PCE I "feel" this kind of control (also quick "last second" corrections yield good results most of the time) while on the Sat (specially the Japanese 60FPS mode) I always end up flying in the sky o_O. My guess is that the Sat version is probably Arcade perfect and just as unforgiving (in the end losing there meant more money for the Arcade owner :D ) while NEC balanced the gameplay for a less frustrating "home" experience. My impression at least :)
No problem. Quite a few have asked for an Out Run BOTP as well as a Street Fighter 2 one. I was quite happy to do the Out Run video as it's a game I've loved playing for over 25 years.
I had the CPC game when I was young, on disk. It came with an audio cassette you could play at the same time that had all the music from the game on it - so instead of having it coming from the machine, it was arcade-perfect from your tape player. Of course, what actually happened is that the tape found its way into my parents' car so I could sit in the front seat and pretend I was in California ...
Tim Miller hahaha, now that would have been so cool in the 80's. Actually, the very first music played in my first car was Thunder Force 4 sound track!
Gotta agree about the music on the PC Engine port. I still need to pick that version up for my Duo-R. About the American Saturn version; It is possible to get the 60 fps mode with a code. That mode is not unique to the Japanese version.
I wonder why they hid the 60fps option. It's not something you would wantto hide as it makes the game better for many. Do you know if the EU version has the code as well?
Yakumo1975 I am not sure. I have heard the EU version has an arranged soundtrack though. I can't confirm this, but with the JP and US versions containing the arcade's FM music I don't know why they would change it in that region.
Yakumo1975 Yeah we got the three-in-one disc too. On our version Go to Options, highlight Game Mode, then hold A + C and press Left or Right. This will activate the 60 fps mode. If you have a EU version give it a try.
I only have the Japanese Sega Ages discs but I guess I could always download an ISO of the EU version to check it out. Since I own all the games anyway it's not like I've never bought them :)
MSX 2 version colours on the video were wrong. There was also a MSX 1 version on Europe, converted from ZX Spectrum. But great video :) I like too much this channel.
Yes, I sure have. The arcade version is really nice. Not so sure about the Mega Drive version though. I've also played Turbo Out Run as well in the arcades and on the Mega Drive. Again, the MD version isn't very good.
Retro Core , Your car can move faster, you get better traction as well as bumpers to prevent you car from severe crashes. It was $6 when I bought it from Nintendo's eShop
Retro Core The biggest selling point for the 3DS version for me were the 2 new songs composed using the same arcade hardware sound front and the native 16:9 resolution. There is something just a tad off with the 60fps though, which is most noticeable if you compare it to the Saturn version.
The PC-Engine version is smoother than the one on Genesis, but it suffers from a problem that loads of the ports had -- it can't do the split roads right, either mid stage or on the branches. Genesis has more accurate track layouts than a lot of the other versions as a result (also, that flicker on the stage branches was always awful). It's actually fairly impressive on the Genesis for that reason, the arcade version had dedicated hardware to do that. I've got a pretty big soft spot for the Genesis version, even when I can fire up the arcade release or 3DS version at any time these days. It's a bit choppy, but it's just satisfying. Always liked the music more than on PCE too. could just be that the first time I reached all the endings was on Genesis, haha It's a damn shame you're running MD Outrun at 50hz, I can't think of any Sega developed game on the system that was actually 50hz optimized. It's a game that's already kind of choppy at 60hz, but now it's running only 5/6ths as fast. Bleh. but yeah, there's a fair few Sega arcade ports that are oddly better on PC-Engine (After Burner comes to mind immediately, and then Space Harrier got a solid port to PCE and didn't make it to the MD for whatever reason) like, I'm pretty sure that was a case of one hand not talking to the other when Sega's arcade division was giving out conversion licenses I really wish the PS2 version handled properly. Sega really botched all of the 3D Sega Ages remakes pretty bad. Like, I'm still mad about Virtua Racing, since it means that to this day that the best home version in terms of handling is still the 32X one. Kind of surprised they never went back to it and did an "OutRun Complete Collection" Sega Ages release like they did for Space Harrier, but I guess it doesn't matter at this point anymore.
I can imagine the Probe version being a European release and being a 100% ZX Spectrum port. That was the case most of the time with these European MSX multi format games.
The Pony Canyon version is a MSX2, although it barely uses the MSX2 enhanced features. The Probe version is a slower version of the ZX Spectrum port where the music starts over again everytime you crash into something.
3D Outrun is choppier, but has the water and uphill effect from the original arcade version. It also looks slightly better, the music is different too. There are some new tracks added too.
Apparently, Sega and M2 are bringing over OutRun to the 3DS as the next entry in their 3D Remaster Project series which is great. I'm sure M2 will feature both Japan and Overseas tracks, and hopefully the odd billboard changes from the DC port won't be present either. The obvious question is the whether they'll use the Ferrari again, having been replaced by a stand-in car in that version. On the other hand, 3D After Burner II formally credited Northrop Gruman (who designed the F-14 Tomcat fighter) on its title screen.
I really would love to see a remake of this video with versions of Outrun and commentary. I remember playing a fan made racing/driving game of Outrun for SmileBASIC on the 3DS called "The Drive". I remember that the only game song in there has the repeated notes of Magical Sound Shower. There was a 2015 remake of Outrun for the Amstrad CPC which is an improved version than the shitty US Gold port for the computer.
The 2015 remake is a PC version designed to look and play like a true CPC version as faifthully as possible. Now somebody needs to convert that so it works on an actual CPC. That would be awesome. Also when you redo this, state that the MSX version is the MSX2 version by Pony Canyon and then add the actual MSX version by Probe.
So the AGES PS2 series only has the 3D versions and no arcarde original port included? I think my brother bought the Alien Syndrome thinking he'll get a pixel perfect arcarde port with just a 3D version as a side thing. I believe he said it had only a 3D remake disappointed and sold it.
Yep, that's right. All you get is the 3D remake. The best way to play out run at home is on the Saturn. Arcade perfect plus a 60fps mode which is even smoother than the arcade machine. Also, the Japanese version has some fantastic remixed music as well as the original tracks.
I don't know why the megadrive version doesn't have engine sound, I think that is what mostly kills it. Another thing is that I never knew which key of the msx keyboard is used to brake in the msx version.. does anyone knows?
Leonardo Antonio Ah, that's because you maybe not familar with the Japanese arcade layout. the japanese and western versions have the track order arranged from each other.
Boo! Wanted to edit and ended up deleting my comment :C Here it goes again: "Why would they do that?" I think if anyone from Sega's department answers that question, it would be like this: "It's OutRun, made by us, in the Dreamcast, made by Sega, which casually happens to be us, so we can do whatever we want with it" As for the licensing, sponsors and such, I think they're used to gather funds to develop games on third party consoles. That's why certain logos might get replaced on any other console ports. Just like the Daytona licensing issue in the 720p port of Daytona USA, but they got it back in the 360/PS3 port. Or like, the AMD logos in OutRun 2006. Why the MegaDrive version wasn't as much as good as AfterBurner 2's port on it escapes to my reasons, tho... PS: Whatever did Amiga consume back then, I want some too. WTF WITH THAT INTRO!?
PC Engine and Master System are indeed both 8-bit consoles, but it doesn't make them the same in sheer power. SMS is not nearly the same as PCE in that regard, not even close. PCE's CPU was variation of NES CPU, but on insane steroids (7 MHz vs 1,7 MHz and mighty features like internal bank switching, RAM regions movement, bit operations, and much more) and graphical capabilities were from completely different leagues. So it's not fair to compare them like that.
Great video, but I take issue with calling Probe Software "not very talented". Their OutRun conversions were shocking but that's because they subcontracted them out to meet the Christmas deadline. The majority of their catalogue was really good stuff.
Probe has done better than this. When watching the Amiga & ST versions in this video, I couldn't believe Probe had a thing to do with them. Subcontracting? That explains it. Their Amiga ports of Roadblasters & Super Monaco GP are actually decent- neither one has the arcade's smoothness, but they're playable. Their versions of T2: The Arcade Game on SNES, MD, & Amiga are good. On the MD version you get a soundtrack by Matt Furniss, which IMO is better than the arcade's. The HK boss & Cyberdyne Lab raid themes are epic.
I would like to do updated versions of many of the older shows including Final Fight, Ghouls'n Ghosts and R-Type. The problem I have is would people be happy with an updated show rather than a new show? I oy have time yo produce one Battle of the Ports a week. I think I'll make a pole asking what people would like.
The DC clip is from Yu Suzuki Game Works Vol 1, right? Is there any difference from the Shenmue II version to the Game Works version? Great video any way; Outrun is timeless.
It has an 8bit Cpu so it is an 8bit machine. Back in 1988 every magazine English or Japanese said it was 8bit. It was released before the Mega Drive which was concidered the first 16bit console.
The PCE version might ran smoother. But the Coconut Beach surfer are missing. The Mega Drive version looks more like the arcade. In this case I'll stick with the Mega Drive. Plus although the music might not been original, it was decent. Way back then I played outrun a lot. Then I bought the Master System with that game. Boy was I disappointed. At least later they brought out a 3D version of that game. The car was smaller but the graphics where nicer. I preferred that. Even though the busier graphics made the whole game slower. More later the modern Outrun cam to the Xbox. With the original game hidden inside it. Good version. Besides, the there's a nice PSP version you want to check out.
There are 2 downloads: the LayOut (Track Editor) and the Cannonball, but you need the Outrun Rev 2 {outrun.zip} The quality is Awesome ;) I left the links if you wanna try: github.com/djyt/cannonball/wiki github.com/djyt/layout/wiki
The Genesis version is way better than the TG-16, the TG-16 sound is tinny and there is no digitized audio, no "Check Point" and "Congratulations" and where is the split in the road where you decide which path to take. The Colors are better on the Genesis even if the TG-16 has a slightly sharper image, I prefer the warmer colors over slightly sharper image with less warm colors. I think Out Run is The Best 16-Bit Console racing game, better than anything on SNES.
Jason Lee It could have been a lot better than it was. It all came down to memory size of the cartridges back then. It was expensive so a lot of games were cut back. The Mega Drive hardware is pretty good when you see what can be done with it when there's no limit on cartridge size.
Retro Core was the size of Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive cartridge games cut back because of the cartridge media costs, deadlines, development costs, Sega license fees?
Regarding Amiga and Atari ports, this was the time when Amiga games were mostly direct Atari ports and Amiga ports suffered from this as Amiga's superior hardware was not put in use at all. Very sad as Amiga was capable of doing much better than this. It was just lazyass job made by the developers.
You overestimate the capabilities of the GBA :) It was not capable of much more than that. especially on a shared cartridge, having to restrict memory usage
I think it could have been smoother for sure if handled by a more competent developer. But yes, you are right about the cartridge size limitation. If only they went with one twice the memory size.
In defence of the game gear version. Although technically more powerful than a master system. It has a bigger color palette than even the Mega Drive. The resolution of the game gear is very low, so you either compromise like outrun and have less detail, or crop in heavily like Sonic 2 and have it completely unplayable. I had the game gear version of outrun and it was easily one of the most played games I had on it. It was a product of its time like all game gear games were, they are all unplayable now.
Retro Core that was a good game :) I only played that emulated, but I bought the first one second hand from a Chinese kid at school. I liked that game and being a proper Sega fanboy convinced myself it’s better than Mario Kart :D I liked my Game Gear, but of all my 90s gaming consoles I find going back to that the least fun, I rather play the Master System versions of Sonic, Mickey’s illusion series etc. As a 10 year old with no TV in my bedroom, the game gear was by far my best choice.
Retro Core haha, if you are trying to get an argument out of me you have failed. I think both games are amazingly good, but I lean sonic all star racing transformed
Great comparisons here. I had this on the C64 and it was ugly as hell but pretty speedy. I thought the SID renditions could’ve been much better though. It seemed like the musician just went for something that could be easily ported across all of the European computer platforms. Beyond that, the Saturn version was clearly the best home offering. I liked the clean, vibrant approach of the MD game, but felt the PCE version was better. I actually laughed out loud at the music in the MS DOS version and for funny looks in the canteen at work where I’m watching this now! 😂 I know these are old, but if I may, my only gripe with this video was that you kept using the same tune in nearly all your playthroughs. Why not vary it up?
Thank for watching, inphanta. The reason fir using the same tune was so people could compare them against each other. I guess if the clips of each version were mire tightly edited it may not have been so bad.
I found your comparison between the Mega Drive version and PCE version to be very strange, like you were viewing the PCE version through rose-tinted glasses or something. Just watching it here on this video comparison, the Mega Drive version was clearly superior in pretty much every aspect.
Please tell me you didn't just compare the PC Engine and Master System as the same class of system... are you kidding me? The PC Engine's CPU is 8 bit yes, but it's graphics processor is 16 bit and was actually more powerful than the Megadrive. Just compare the PC Engine CD games to the Genesis or Sega CD and you'll easily see this. It was obviously part of the 16 bit generation and meant to compete with the other 16 bit systems. You can't possibly expect a Master System port to keep up with the likes of the PC Engine...
PC Engine is 8 bit. It was released before the Mega Drive too. Why its concidered a 16 bit system these days is a mystery. It was a very powerful 8 bit console. The MSX2 computer is also 8bit but can easily out do a Master System. No 16 bit gpu in that machine.
The CPU is indeed 8 bit, but the reason it's considered to be 16 bit is because its Graphics chip is 16 bit. It is in a whole nother league compared to the Master System. Seems kind of strange to compare the two, as if they were on equal footing or something. While it did come first, the PC Engine was part of the same console generation as the SNES and Genesis. It's Graphics chip is very respectable, specially with the expanded RAM.
I have not watched all the video yet... But I am calling it - WORST Port has to be the Amstrad CPC Port... CHRIST EVEN THE SPECCY HAD THE BLOODY CAR CRASH!!! (Much as I loved my CPC... Out Run was DIRE!!!!!)
i like the PS2 version BUT its overkill with fireworks on motion, which is a problem with many video-games now. should have called the PS2 version Psychedelic Rave Axe. seriously, its unnecessary
The Amiga version is nowhere near as good as it should ahve been. What we have is a very lazy port of the Atari ST version with some upgrade on the sound. The Amiga was more than capable of doing something close to the arcade if not a spot-on conversion. The Speccy version however makes the Amiga version look like a work of high art. Incredibly slow to the point of unplayable.
Most Amiga arcade ports are pethetic because they were made in short time periods by people who didn't have the skill most of the time. There are some amazing ports but most released by the likes of US Gold, Ocean or Elite are pretty awful IMO. The Amiga does have great games however most seem to be original titles.
Retro Core Yeah, Amiga was a decent home computer for its time, with some great original games. Like you say for Arcade Quality 16bit games the newer 16bit consoles were more adept /powerful tools to work with :-) Even the old 8bit/16bit Hybrid Microscopic sized PC Engine HuCard version kills the home computer versions - lol
+Retro Core Elite Systems did some good or excellent arcade ports on the Amiga -> Bomb Jack, Buggy Boy, Commando, Ghosts n Goblins, Ikari Warriors, Joe & Mac Caveman Ninja, Mighty Bombjack, Paperboy, Space Harrier Ocean Software did some good or excellent arcade ports on the Amiga -> Cabal, Chase HQ II Special Criminal Investigation, Midnight Resistance, Narc, New Zealand Story, Operation Thunderbolt, Operation Wolf, Rainbow Islands, RoboCop, Shadow Warriors, Smash TV U.S. Gold did some good or excellent arcade ports on the Amiga -> 1943 The Battle of Midway, Bionic Commando, Alien Storm, Black Tiger, Bonanza Bros, Crack Down, Dynasty Wars, ESWAT, Final Fight, Forgotten Worlds, Gauntlet II, Mega Twins, Mercs, Road Blasters, Rolling Thunder, Shadow Dancer, Side Arms, Street Fighter II, Super Monaco GP, Thunder Blade, Tiger Road, Turbo Out Run, U.N. Squadron, Vigilante,
They maybe good but still lack an awful lot compared to other ports. Also I noticed you have listed Final Fight in that list. The Amiga version of Final Fight is bloody awful! I've covered it in this series.
if most of the Amiga arcade conversions (ports) were badly made by people that didn't have the skills why did the standard of Amiga arcade conversions (ports) get better from 1990 onwards? because developers didn't properly understand Amiga's hardware in the 1980's
pc engine / turbografx is not...and I'll repeat...is not an 8 bit console...16 bit graphics processor with dual 8 bit cpu's...5x the color of a Genesis 2x the color of a snes...even Wikipedia has it wrong and they still tell you it's a 16 bit graphics processor...get your facts straight
Dude, the PC Engine has always been classed as an 8bit system even back in 1988. All magazines back then classed it as an 8bit system including those in Japan. Yes, it has a It had a 16 bit gpu, but just an 8 bit cpu. Please don't tell me that the 100s of magazine articles from back in the day were all wrong because the GPU was 16bit. The "bit wars" was based upon the CPU so in this case it is classed as an 8bit console. Anyway, the whole bit thing means nothing. Just look at the crap the Jaguar put out. that was 2x 32bit cpus. The Mega Drive and SFC were both 16bit but most would argue that the SFC / SNES was the most powerful system. The master System and NES were 8bit yet the Master System was far more powerful (It didn't have the games mind you)
Retro Core it has a dual 8 bit cpu to push the 16 bit gpu...was designed like that to keep the architecture the same as the NES...was actually submitted to Nintendo to be the NES successor and was rejected...I'll say it again...its a 16 bit console...as far as a Master System...that thing is trash...and 90% of the games run in slow motion...I know I have 79 games for it
A dual core 8-bit CPU is not the same as a 16-bit CPU. Your opinion on whether it was the superior console doesn't change the fact that it is classed as an 8-bit console. The fact that it is an 8-bit console doesn't automatically mean that it was worse than a 16-bit console either.
Retro Core & what don't you people understand...a 16 bit graphics chip is a 16 bit graphics chip...and needs dual 8 bit cpu's to push it...its not an atari jaguar with two 32 bit processors acting like its a 64 bit console...it has the 16 bit gpu...and pumps out 16 bit graphics...just look at Street Fighter 2...no 8 bit console is pushing that period...
I was hoping it was possible to emulate that version some how but at the time of making this video there was no way. Sadly the Tiger LCD games weren't really sold in Japan so it's quite difficult to find a real machine over here.
That's nit always possible because there will always be someone moaning that I'm using Japanese release dates or something dumb like that. Besides, it's kind of interesting not to group the similar systems together.
Thanks, Floxit. That Xbox mod you mentioned sounds interesting for sure.
Outrun 3D on Sega Ages is great, very underrated.
why is (was) Out Run 3D on
the Sega Ages underrated?
Because it's different of Arcade version. The classic gamers reclaim of him.
i would disagree any Out Run version is (was) underrated
I love Outrun on the PC Engine, a lot of fun :)
Master System versions supports the paddle controller for analog steering.
Just imagine back in the day having this setup:
-Japanese Master System
-Japanese Outrun cart
-paddle controller
Spectrum Out Run, is that like the best spectrum music? Damn!
Two thumbs up for a great video showing each version and with. Background info in the video is a nice addition to cover differences of each port of the game itself.
Thank you. Please check out my other videos in this series. I'm up to 53 shows so far with no sign of slowing down. A new video is released each week.
SaturnVDP1
I'm using the Japanese game so I'm guessing that's why the MD Out Run was the japanese layout or is the Genesis and Euro MD game like this as well?
Saturn, my No.1 game console of all time and I own a lot of different consoles and games.
Unfortunately, all regions of MD OutRun possess the Japanese layout.
how could Out Run for Master System be better converted??
18:57 This intro with stutters and glitches makes it even scarier!
Your port compilations are always very informative. Thanks!
You're welcome. Please help suport the series by spreading the video's link around. Thanks!
Glad you liked the video. I actually updated this video a few years later ua-cam.com/video/2NzJjBNa52U/v-deo.html
Absolutly brilliant vid, by far my favourite botp. Quality is amazing, fbooked and tweeted, cheers
Thank you very much. The more exposure the better.
You forgot about the 3DS version, which also had a 60fps mode.
'How to make FM sound like crap' by the Outrun soundtrack on the master system.
I guess they new tge Amiga port was crap bur at least wanted to give the buyer something to excite them 😋
@@RetroCore Even if his ports are crap, at least US Gold knows how to excite his users.
The VDP on Sega Master System is also 16-bit data bus system.
See VRAM(IC6,7) on the schematic.
Yes, Sega Master System "16".
voices commentary are much better than just text commentary, thank you!
You're welcome. I'm sure you've seen the new remasted version of this video.
2018, and people still judge the PC Engine capabilities by it's processor's 8bit... "so, that's why Nintendo 64's 64bits CPU is better than XBox's 32bits CPU"... yeah... but, no...
This video was released in 2014 :)
The PC Engine is an 8bit system but a very powerful one.
Mega Drive chip sound is amazing! So peculiar!
I was about to asking for this game when I realised you had already made a video of it :). It would be really good to try to contact some of the devs of ports of any game to tell you how it was to work back in that time. Anyway, amazing battle as always. Keep on rocking!
Yep, this is quite an old video :) I'm going to revisit some of the earlier shows such as Space Harrier some time in the future.
That US Gold presents intro from the Amiga version should be your channel intro.
Hehe😂 they'd probably try and sue me.
That Amstrad CPC version is an embarrassment. If you look carefully in the footage you can even see points where it does not even look like the lines in the road are moving, parts where the road is suddenly offset compared to where it was and other moments where the other cars are off the road completely.
OutRun on the GBA should look like Moto Racer Advance and sound like one of Shinen's games.
i have a suggestion for future episodes of battle of the ports.
Yakumo1975
Thanks a million, I really like your comments you know! :D
settingbros Retro Core Yes, the 'system name' obscures the car graphic .
Although in the MD and Amiga's case it was probably for the better mind - lol ;-)
Road rash on the sms is a fantastic port, very close to the megadrive. Hang on ain't too bad either.
Grew up with the Master System Port. But Fell in love with the game all over again on the Saturn. It's a staple that never leaves the console. While Outrun is 2nd place to the Ridge Racer Series as my favorite Racer/Driving game. Outrun still wins on Sentimental value.
I too grew up with the Master System versions. I loved playing the 3D one with the 3D glasses. It actually does work!
I never did beat it, I don;t think anyone in my house, or visiting ever could. I remmeber how gleeful I was when I finally beat the saturn version. But the Master System version remains unbeaten.
Also the arcade version was unlockable in the XBOX Version of outrun 2. I don't know if it's a port or emulation of the Arcade or a Port of the Dreamcast port though.
anybody that says Out Run on PC Engine/Turbo-Grafx sounds better than Out Run on Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive is clearly deluded in the brain
Sound effect in pc engine is like shiit but music little good
Found this now ^^;
As I said elsewhere, my favorite for "remembering the arcade" is the Sat version, but when it comes to spend hours on it and beat it to death I always go with PC Engine, the gameplay is really perfectly balanced for an home "I don't want to rip quarters out of your pockets" experience.
From the look of it the PS2 version "seems" very playable, but I am one of those bothered by the polygon based graphics ^^;
P.S
And I have to say again there are no better "let's compare" videos on the net, excellent job!
I'll have to give the PCE version a little more time and go for all the endings to see just how it differes from the Saturn version.
You will certainly have a blast doing so ^_^
As you know an accident would jeopardize the possibility of finishing the course (specially down the line, where you will need every single second) and hitting the breaks too much (thus losing many precious seconds) is not advisable either, but in the conceited last laps you some times find yourself in "high traffic" scenarios, often in the middle of a difficult series of turns, so what I like to do is to decelerate by just releasing the accelerator button (or by gently using the breaks) standing just a nose behind the car in front of me (while keep "racing", not losing much speed as I keep that car speed at least) correct my trajectory and blaze past it.
First time hearing the outrun soundtrack and I think: Must be iconic?
seriously? You've never heard the OutRun soundtrack before?
With this being among my favorite games ever this video really sits well with me. Thanks for making this amazing overview! :)
No problem. Quite a few have asked for an Out Run BOTP as well as a Street Fighter 2 one. I was quite happy to do the Out Run video as it's a game I've loved playing for over 25 years.
You might want to update this video, along with the others that have received 3DS ports.
Yakumo1975
I am not sure. I have heard the EU version has an arranged soundtrack though. I can't confirm this, but with the JP and US versions containing the arcade's FM music I don't know why they would change it in that region.
In Europe, Out Run, Afterburner and Space Harrier all came on one disc. I'm guessing the US release is the same?
Yakumo1975
Yeah we got the three-in-one disc too.
As an Out Run lover, I have to say I loved this comparison. Have you ever played Outrunners? I still wish that game got a Saturn release.
Yes, I sure have. The arcade version is really nice. Not so sure about the Mega Drive version though. I've also played Turbo Out Run as well in the arcades and on the Mega Drive. Again, the MD version isn't very good.
The SID rendition of the C64 is fantastic!
it sure is. The game even plays quite well. Not like an Out Run game but a good little racer.
I still have the version on the Nintendo 3DS. You can even upgrade your car in this version!
Nice. Does it go faster or is it only cosmetic?
Retro Core , Your car can move faster, you get better traction as well as bumpers to prevent you car from severe crashes. It was $6 when I bought it from Nintendo's eShop
Nice. I didn't know about that.
Retro Core The biggest selling point for the 3DS version for me were the 2 new songs composed using the same arcade hardware sound front and the native 16:9 resolution. There is something just a tad off with the 60fps though, which is most noticeable if you compare it to the Saturn version.
Nice Video as always
Always liked the music more than on PCE too.
could just be that the first time I reached all the endings was on Genesis, haha
It's a damn shame you're running MD Outrun at 50hz, I can't think of any Sega developed game on the system that was actually 50hz optimized. It's a game that's already kind of choppy at 60hz, but now it's running only 5/6ths as fast. Bleh.
but yeah, there's a fair few Sega arcade ports that are oddly better on PC-Engine (After Burner comes to mind immediately, and then Space Harrier got a solid port to PCE and didn't make it to the MD for whatever reason)
like, I'm pretty sure that was a case of one hand not talking to the other when Sega's arcade division was giving out conversion licenses
I really wish the PS2 version handled properly.
I think you should remake a lot of these older episodes with voiceover and your current editing techniques, Mark. ^_^
I'd like too. It's just a matter of time.
I noticed that there are two MSX versions: one by Pony Canyon, the other by Probe.
I played Out Run and 3D Out Run on MS but I don't remember any difference between the two's.
They're actually different game :) different track layouts too.
One day I would like to redo this episode with voice over and updated ports.
For the Amiga version I thought it was going to be like Big Run on Amiga. Runs smooth, but it's kind of a disappointment
I don't know why the megadrive version doesn't have engine sound, I think that is what mostly kills it. Another thing is that I never knew which key of the msx keyboard is used to brake in the msx version.. does anyone knows?
I think the MD port wasn't done all that well if I'm to be honest. It could have been a lot better.
Retro Core
Also some stages are interchanged and after playing the original layout it gets confusing sometimes.
Leonardo Antonio
Ah, that's because you maybe not familar with the Japanese arcade layout. the japanese and western versions have the track order arranged from each other.
mmm, you mean the japanese MD port has the same layout as the original arcade game?
yep.
Boo! Wanted to edit and ended up deleting my comment :C
Here it goes again:
"Why would they do that?"
I think if anyone from Sega's department answers that question, it would be like this:
"It's OutRun, made by us, in the Dreamcast, made by Sega, which casually happens to be us, so we can do whatever we want with it"
As for the licensing, sponsors and such, I think they're used to gather funds to develop games on third party consoles.
I guess I'm just not a fan. Their Alien 3 game is really popular but personally I find it very dull.
Retro Core yeah I'm not a fan of Probe either. There games always seem rushed and missing details.
I cant get past the missing engine sounds on the genesis game.
It is odd. I guess they thought the music was more important.
Amstrad CPC version wins the participation trophy
Can you please do an updated version of Battle of the Ports: OutRun please?
I would like to do updated versions of many of the older shows including Final Fight, Ghouls'n Ghosts and R-Type. The problem I have is would people be happy with an updated show rather than a new show? I oy have time yo produce one Battle of the Ports a week. I think I'll make a pole asking what people would like.
If you like Outrun, check out Final Freeway 2r for iOS/Google Play, and you can even play your own music in it! Of course I use the arcade Splash Wave
I have both final Freeway 1 and 2 on my Android phone. I like the look of part 1 more. It's closer to older arcade games.
pc engine is 16 bit
It's debatable but in general it's classed as an 8 bit console.
The DC clip is from Yu Suzuki Game Works Vol 1, right? Is there any difference from the Shenmue II version to the Game Works version?
Great video any way; Outrun is timeless.
I'm afraid not. It's just the same game :(
Is that the Europe or Japanese arcade cabinet shown there? I know it's not the North American one.
Japanese one. The European one was the same as the US one as far as game content is concerned.
18:57 Is this intro intended for a racing game or a fighting game (like Mortal Kombat)? 😂
God knows. It is crap though.
PC Engine is part of the fourth generation consoles... not third 8bit generation, just like Dreamcast is part of the sixth generation.
It has an 8bit Cpu so it is an 8bit machine. Back in 1988 every magazine English or Japanese said it was 8bit. It was released before the Mega Drive which was concidered the first 16bit console.
Retro Core if they said so... I disagree. As i said before, just like Dreamcast.
Sadly I don't own a PSP. I would like to also try out the 3DS version.
Yakumo, you should check the Cannonball enhaced engine for Outrun Arcade, It's AMAZING
Oh yeah, I've heared about this. It also includes a track editor doesn't it?
There are 2 downloads: the LayOut (Track Editor) and the Cannonball, but you need the Outrun Rev 2 {outrun.zip} The quality is Awesome ;) I left the links if you wanna try:
github.com/djyt/cannonball/wiki
github.com/djyt/layout/wiki
Thanks very much. I'm going to give this a try now.
You are welcome sir ;)
The Genesis version is way better than the TG-16, the TG-16 sound is tinny and there is no digitized audio, no "Check Point" and "Congratulations" and where is the split in the road where you decide which path to take. The Colors are better on the Genesis even if the TG-16 has a slightly sharper image, I prefer the warmer colors over slightly sharper image with less warm colors. I think Out Run is The Best 16-Bit Console racing game, better than anything on SNES.
OutRun is a classic :-)
1st Place - Sega Saturn
2nd Place - PC Engine
3rd Place - GBA Version
*Btw, didn't the FM Towns get a version of this?
Hmm, good question. Not sure about the FM Towns.
Retro Core Sorry :(
It seems it was Turbo Outrun only on the Marty :)
I bet it's a billion time better than the Mega Drive version.
Retro Core Oh yes, it defo looks it :D
Btw its viewable on here ( youtube it ;-) )
part of me thinks the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port (version) of Out Run could be better
Jason Lee It could have been a lot better than it was. It all came down to memory size of the cartridges back then. It was expensive so a lot of games were cut back. The Mega Drive hardware is pretty good when you see what can be done with it when there's no limit on cartridge size.
Theres a new beat'em up by Watermelon studios that's 64 megabits I think. Looks amazing too!
Then they could have worked a little more on the saturn's hardware.
Retro Core was the size of Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive cartridge games cut back because of the cartridge media costs, deadlines, development costs, Sega license fees?
Mostly because of the media cost. Memory wasn't so cheap back then.
+KarpowSCX so true. There are far too many lazy ST Ports on the Amiga.
i love the gba soundtrack better than the arcade original in my opinion (same for space harrier) the gba sound is perfect for these songs.
I think you missed the XBOX version. (BTW, it seems to be inside the Outrun 2 for Xbox)
Yeah, I missed that out because it's just an emulation so it's against the rules of the show.
Master System: Magical Sound Shower played by Mariachi band.
You overestimate the capabilities of the GBA :)
It was not capable of much more than that. especially on a shared cartridge, having to restrict memory usage
I don't know. Sonic Drift 2 is still pretty cool on the game gear.
I'll tell you what is better than any modern Mario Kart game, Sonic Racing Transformed. That's one epic game.
Retro Core haha, if you are trying to get an argument out of me you have failed. I think both games are amazingly good, but I lean sonic all star racing transformed
I believe it should be better to do not use scanliness, image and colours are sharper without that filter.
If Outrun is the Grandfather of all modern racers than what does that make Turbo? I'm curious lad.
Easy, the great grandfather.
@@RetroCore Definitively agree old man. 😉👍
playstation 2 remake good sega saturn best port arcade
Great comparisons here. I had this on the C64 and it was ugly as hell but pretty speedy. I thought the SID renditions could’ve been much better though. It seemed like the musician just went for something that could be easily ported across all of the European computer platforms.
Beyond that, the Saturn version was clearly the best home offering. I liked the clean, vibrant approach of the MD game, but felt the PCE version was better. I actually laughed out loud at the music in the MS DOS version and for funny looks in the canteen at work where I’m watching this now! 😂
I know these are old, but if I may, my only gripe with this video was that you kept using the same tune in nearly all your playthroughs.
It could well be. This is an old video so I really should go back and redo it again.
Completly agree
+Love made in Japan
The PC Engine only has 6 channels, the Genesis has 6FM + 3PSG for 9 channels.
PC Engine is also mono.
The PC engine is clearly superior. It runs way smoother and it plays better in contrast to the choppy mega Drive one.
It's not that much smoother, and MD is more faifthul anyways. I'm stumped.
when you see the letters us gold and port better to be ready for a lot of horse shit
Absolutely right.
I haven't watched this video in a long time but I recall you may be correct.
Ps2 version is great. Unlicensed car is ugly though
Wish Sega would get round to a new outrun rather than squeezing out sonic over and over again.
Pad Beery yeah!
i like the PS2 version BUT its overkill with fireworks on motion, which is a problem with many video-games now. should have called the PS2 version Psychedelic Rave Axe. seriously, its unnecessary
Am I wrong or there were two Amiga Out Run: European and USA version? Both crap but if I'm right, the European version was the worst.
I'm not sure. It's possible but I've not heard about that.
Like you say for Arcade Quality 16bit games the newer 16bit consoles were more adept /powerful tools to work with :-)
Even the old 8bit/16bit Hybrid Microscopic sized PC Engine HuCard version kills the home computer versions - lol
+Retro Core Elite Systems did some good or excellent arcade ports on the Amiga -> Bomb Jack, Buggy Boy, Commando, Ghosts n Goblins, Ikari Warriors, Joe & Mac Caveman Ninja, Mighty Bombjack, Paperboy, Space Harrier
Ocean Software did some good or excellent arcade ports on the Amiga -> Cabal, Chase HQ II Special Criminal Investigation, Midnight Resistance, Narc, New Zealand Story, Operation Thunderbolt, Operation Wolf, Rainbow Islands, RoboCop, Shadow Warriors, Smash TV
The ps3 version is the best
pc engine / turbografx is not...and I'll repeat...is not an 8 bit console...16 bit graphics processor with dual 8 bit cpu's...5x the color of a Genesis 2x the color of a snes...even Wikipedia has it wrong and they still tell you it's a 16 bit graphics processor...get your facts straight
Nick Arnoeyts thank you for your comment Nick.
GBA version was let down by the shit developers lol
Bass Hunter2007 and it's good compared to afterburner on that cart, LOL.
those scanlines are annoying
I'm going with the Saturn version above all. I can't stand interlaced, or fake interlaced graphics which disqualify any version using this shit.
Interlacing is horrible for sure.
Those fake scanlines look awful.
Amiga version is 100% fucking awful
You mentioned the Tiger LCD version. that would have been a "great" addition to the list.
I was hoping it was possible to emulate that version some how but at the time of making this video there was no way. Sadly the Tiger LCD games weren't really sold in Japan so it's quite difficult to find a real machine over here.
SEGA mark3(and mastersystem)version was useable paddle controller. By the way,I think that show in order to released version better than this way.
That's nit always possible because there will always be someone moaning that I'm using Japanese release dates or something dumb like that. Besides, it's kind of interesting not to group the similar systems together.
