Guess who Developed the MD Version? That’s Right! Tiertex!
Alan Laird got the gig of converting this to the ZX Spectrum, based on his earlier work.
He'd done Nightmare Rally for Ocean, which landed him Enduro Racer for Activision, which in turn got him OutRun for Probe, then Turbo Outrun...
He feels he squeezed every last ounce out of the Z80 and achieve the best trade-off between speed and visual impact.
Had the c64 version as a birthday gift and boy was that intro music great, played pretty well also.
Yep. The C64 version is probably one of the better ports out there.
What happened with the font?
@@solarflare9078 I think he typed using MS IME.
Great video, as always. 🗣😁 Thank you, for that ending! 😍 It's awesome that you used the "Turbo OutRun Rap" from the Commodore 64 version, for the end of the video, because I love that tune so much, I downloaded it to my phone, a while back...! ⚡🎶🎮🤩 Good times. 🎵👊😎🌈💖
The arcade game is a lot of fun with an excellent OST, which sadly wasn't ported well to most other systems so it's kind of forgotten.
The upgrades were an afterthought indeed. I didn't notice any difference when selecting either one.
Damn you TIERTEX >:(
Your Japanese accent getting stronger and stronger with each video. :)
He's most likely of Asian decent.
@@marioghernandez4960 Given the amount of bias he vocalizes he's definately of Asian descent. Spews all sorts of crap praising Asian developers and belittling Western ones.
Watch enough videos nd you'll see how biggoted and opinionated he is. He even deliberately tunes popular western machines to run as poorly as possible, much worse than original hardware more often than not.
@@beezle1976
Opinionated doesn't necessarily mean bigoted. Are you somehow suggesting that someone who doesn't really like Midway or Williams is somehow "bigoted and opinionated?" Besides, he probably didn't really make those machines run poorly on purpose. Last time I watch his videos where he tried those machines, and then looked at someone else's gameplay fottage, I couldn't really tell the difference in framerate or overall performance.
@@beezle1976 The fuck are you talking about? I've noticed nothing to suggest tampering with the systems.
And the dude grew up on Euro home computer ports, that would make anyone hate Western devs....
beezle1976 You're only helping prove his point of how toxic Amiga/ZX Spectrum fanboys can be.... Since when does he purposely tune western computers to run as bad as possible? Besides, if it is running off, then more often than not, he would tell us that.
Am I the only person that prefers this to Outrun?
I'm sure there are others.
One of the Sega games I saw very little of around here. Not too bad, but Outrun is still my favorite. From that "ouch!" voice sample it sounds like Space Harrier is the driver :)
I was thinking that too. I'm sure the have used the same voice samples.
C=64 port seems the best considering the limits of the system. I kinda like the MD one too but I only emulated it.
Amiga version by ICE, the ones that later did the other poor conversion of Special Criminal Investigation :/
I like the Arcade versions soundtrack no idea what happened to the ports they seem to have a completely different soundtrack compared to the Arcade version.
It's quite playable IMO because of the turbo feature from games like Chase HQ
Also I like the fact that there are weather effects and a lot more going on in the stages than in Outrun the original game so it does have some redeeming features I would say
i like the speccy zx version!
As usual top quality show
Thanks!
Such a shame that both Turbo Outrun & Outrunners never released on Sega Saturn :-(
Out runners especially
The license fees to use the cars
in the game would have gone up
I remember this on the C64. It was 🔥
FIRE 🔥
I remember the ST version too, I didn't think it was too bad, though not as good as the C64 version. One thing I found curious, the ST's second BGM track sounded similar to a BGM track on the ST version of Turrican, after watching this video, the Spectrum has almost the exact same music, but the C64 didn't. I wonder why ? (I'm not complaining though, the C64's soundtrack was brilliant)
I played the crap out of the amiga version, i loved it 😅
Well, at least it's better than the Mega Drive versions. 😁
@RetroCore
And you would think SEGA would of polished the heck out of the MD version 🙄
Did your Amiga version freeze up on the loading ? or does it just take forever to load ?
+Gaming History Source Hmm, I really wish I could say clearly but I seem to remember it taking forever!
+Retro Core ok .. just wondering. I need to try again then. Maybe take a shower & make a sandwich & it'll be loaded. lol
Gaming History Source hehe, I don't think it would take that long. If I remember rightly I had to change the emulation settings to a A600 with 4mb of memory.
It's working a treat to tell the truth :) thanks!
I think the Amiga version got the weirdest track ever...
Creepy, if you ask me. I'd suicide myself afte 5 consecutive tracks with this music. lol
You've got that right. Really bad audio for sure.
I never liked any of the outrun games between the first and then the reboot. The reboot is still my favourite arcade racer today.
You don't like the original Out Run?
I love the original. Just anything between the original and 2006 was pretty bad.
Rob Flynn
Yeah, you are right. Although I did quite like OutRun 20?? But that was actually a different game called Junkers High originally . For some reason it was given the OutRun name for release.
Not even Outrunners ?
What is up with the mono drums on the Amiga?
+LBPPlayer7 that's because of the chappy way the Anita does audio. It's either mono or panned directly to the left or right.
It's always panned, no matter what. Also, it's called the Paula chip.
I love this game 👍
Why is a guy playing on a keyboard floating in the air?
What I really hate about this game is that woman passenger. UGH! You lose the level, she just goes like "I'm out!" and switches to the driver with the 959.
I hate that! She's like a friggin' bitch, if I were to say it like that... Please excuse my language, I really thought about that after someone said that, and it seemed true. Unbelievable, I guess...
I know where you'e coming from right there.
What where they thinking with the Amiga port? The Lotus games ran very smooth.
Most Amiga arcade ports are complete crap. Not all but most.
They were thinking that orange mushrooms drive the car and sit in the passenger seat.
Amiga ports were lazy Atari ST remakes
any chance of gettin' Battle of the Ports San Francisco Rush, Rush 2049 and other Rush racing games in tha near future? :P
...Did it actually take 25 seconds to load the next stage in the Amiga version?
Ok, 1) I thought the video was legitimately broken when I was waiting first time around.
2) That's just SAD. Did anyone think that was okay back then? This goes up to Sonic 06's load time levels, and that's saying something.
Did you even get stuck at the end?
I really don't remember much about this one apart from it was awful.
That "shop" song sounds a lot like the one from Fantasy Zone. I'm guessing it's a remix?
That's because it is :)
Retro Core
also used in the 4 player top down racing game Hot Rod ;)
***** Yep. The Fantasy Zone tune seems to be used a lot in Sega games.
Yeah.
Pretty much every Sega game with a shop-like feature ended up using that tune.
Great episode, too bad there isn't a Pc engine port, the Original outrun port for it was pretty good. From the amiga to the last I find those ports pretty unplayable.
Now I liked C64 Turbo OutRun, but 98% YC magazine? when you only gave Stunt Car Racer 80%...Powerdrift 92%
Man, this game was awesome at the arcade and awful on the Mega Drive.
too right. The Mega Drive version is pathetic.
***** yep, everything Tietex had their hands in was crap.
***** I don't think Tietex ever made a decent game...
Hold your Hearth on the Mega Drive...Is amazing(Yeah you guys can beat the crap outta me...But...It's true!)
Seriously? I'm interested in knowing what attracts you to the Mega Drive version.
+Retro Core It'd ONLY because of the Grunge style of the music. Maybe it's just me
Definitely not as good as the original Out Run, but personally still really good fun.
Sadly the home ports are bad.
@@RetroCore Yup. Especially that Mega Drive version.
Not wonder that many people don't know anything about this game, is crap. And its ports are even worst. Nice video!
Yeah, I can't say I'm a big fan of Turbo OutRun. It's a step backwards in terms of playability.
Oh boy. Seriously? Pushing up and to the left or right is uncomfortable?
Didnt stop to think that the c64 used joysticks, where its very comfortable.
You really dont think about things before you spew them do you?
I was thinking of joysticks. I was also using a joystick. Pushing up to accelerate or jump is bloody annoying. Even Ashens who was brought up on home computers thinks so.
I never liked this game. I never understood what was the goal 😂
Only after growing up I realized it was an arcade game 😅
(played only the Mega-Drive version)
The Mega Drive version is one of the more disappointing titles on the system thanks to Tiertex.
The Mega Drive/Genesis version was made by Tiertex, do I need to say any more as to why the game sucks?
Nope. Tiertex in 99% of cases = complete crap. They were a disgrace and what's sad is that the company is still around now.
@@RetroCore Well, they're stuck making mobile games, which is kinda worse than being out of business when you think of it...
if Tiertex ported the Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive Turbo Out Run version why didn’t they put their name on the title screen?
@@jasonlee7816 Would you want to put your name on a turd of a port? Plus this was the era of gaming where getting full credit was not guaranteed
@@matttheshadowman2790it wasn't a turd of a port unless you are (were) hopeless at playing it often the developer of MD arcade ports usually put their name on the title screen
Amiga version = arse gravy.
Yeah this was a massive let down for me after the superb first game, you forgot to mention how awful the music was as well with completely unforgeable tunes! Least they got to right again with Outrunners i guess but still not as good as the first game
yeah, the music is awful but I guess that goes without saying :) It's so funny how an amazing game was changed in to this rubbish via an upgrade kit.
So called 'upgrade' kit!, more like a downgrade
the md version is ok. i hate the musik in this game.
