  • Debatably the best bus route in the country, Stagecoach Cumbria's 77 runs a circular route via Buttermere and the famous Honister pass, which may well be the best road a bus goes on in the UK. This route is absolutely amazing and it is 10x better in real life. The Lake District is also a phenomenal area featuring some brilliant scenery and great bus links on top of that too. Apologies however for the shaking in the video but that aside I hope you enjoy!

My memory of the warmest, sunniest day my wife and I ever spent in the Lake District was back in the early '80s (1981 or 1982, as I remember.) We'd taken the bus from Keswick to Buttermere, and had intended to walk around the lake.
Back in those days, the bus was a 'minibus' style rather than a full-sized single decker coach, and the route terminated in the car park of the Bridge Hotel.
We did walk around the lake (anti-clockwise) but also stopped off along the way for a swim, a picnic and a spot of sunbathing.
We intended to get back into Buttermere in time to catch the last bus back to Keswick, and as we turned the bend into Buttermere village centre, I spotted the bus driving around the car park. Leaving my wife behind to catch up, I legged it top speed and into the car park, waving my arms in front of the bus in panic, shouting: "Stop!", "Hold on" and such.
The bus eventually stopped just as my wife walked into the car park. Then I noticed all the passengers standing up and moving to the front. The door opened and the driver said: "Calm down, mate. I was just turning around before I dropped off the passengers."
I'd panicked thinking the bus was leaving, when in effect it was only just arriving. The knowing grins and strange looks I got from each and every passenger as they got off, will stay with me for ever. Embarrased? Me? Much?

Nice video: Brought back memories for me, though best played at 25% speed if any details are to be seen.
(Somewhat spoiled by that bloody awful background 'muzak' though!)

U made a return to the lakes. What other routes did you film up there? I recommend the 78 and the X4/X5
