I have yet to find an abstract game with a good solo mode. And is it any wonder? Creating a decent chess and go player has been the goalpost for AI researchers for decades, and it takes sophisticated machine-learning architecture to make them work. How can we expect anything approaching that level of sophistication in the board game space? Still, I hold out hope for a good solo abstract board game, but I don't think it'll come from creating a bot for a game that was meant to be 1v1. It'll have to be some kind of tower defense system. Honestly, games like Pandemic and Spirit Island come close. It's probably why I enjoy those games so much.
Hah, funny that this comment comes up one day after our school hosted a lecturer who has been involved in AI research on AI that play Hanabi and Werewolf. Definitely an interesting area of study. As for abstract games that play decently well solo, I'd suggest Power Plants as one that is at least going in the right direction and that I had quite a bit of fun with.
