What most civilians don't understand is that the military doesn't start wars, politicians do and specifically career politicians. As long as career politicians are allowed to remain in positions of power, the military will be needed.

Thanks to all who served and are serving, from Air Force veteran retired 1972-1997. My dad was an 0-6 Colonel, he had 40 years of service. He started out enlisted. Then in 62 received his commission. He swore me in enlisted and then as an officer. Dads sister was in the Navy, one brother in Navy and one in the Army. Numerous cousins, neices and neohews also served. Am now enjoying the perks of serving 25 years. E7 MSGT and then Captain 0-3. Hopefull some of these soliders will do 20 years even though the odds may be stacked against them. Enjoy this time of your life, you will look back and say where did the time go.

Why are you using Jarhead as a portrayal of " . . . over the top frontline combat . . ." ? This film is *famously* known for being an accurate portrayal of what happens in a lot of warzones (based on the real life experiences of the marine portrayed by Gyllenhaal), where . . . nothing ever really happens. It's also *famously* known for being an anti-war film, and not an action blockbuster.

Those hippies who spit on the troops returning from Vietnam are now the college professors teaching the upcoming generation that America is pure evil. The protests against Vietnam were loud because of the draft. But I think today's young people hate their country more than the Vietnam generation did.
@@MakerInMotion So you have a problem with young people knowing the truth? The country is evil because it has conservatives and conservatism was the foundation of the Satanic Bible. Conservatism about being pure evil. Some people are just evil, and they call themselves conservatives. Both the Republican and most of the democratic party leadership is conservative. When your beliefs are grounded in inverting Christian values, while at the same time falsely claiming to be Christian, you expressly state what you are. The country is the people, not the elites you conservatives serve as dogs. The young people don't hate the country. They hate you, the evil in this country. You are the rats chewing on the hull of the ship, and sinking this country. Name one good thing Republicans have done in the last 60 years. I can do pages of evil things. As to the military. The military murdered at least 2.4 million Americans with their above ground nuclear testing and they knew about fallout from Japan. That was a willful act. The military uses uranium for conventional weapons and some material came from spent nuclear fuel rods. If the human race continues to exist then they probably have killed billions. Name some good, any good.
@@abram730 Everything you just listed as evil can be applied to every empire or country that has ever existed, or ever will exist. They all kill unjustly, they all destroy, they all burn - some sooner then others, or more then others, but they all do. You asked the OP "name one good thing the conservatives have done" and as soon as he would, you plan on naming a few wrongs, right? The exact same thing can be done to any group, if you are familiar with it and if it is old enough. Wrongdoing accrues over time on any group's record, due to humanity's inability to control itself. Seriously, name me one good thing liberals have done, and I'll name you twice as many wrongs. You'll quickly find yourself on the losing end of those scales too. Not just them, but the entire human race for that matter. I bet you a diamond to a walnut you could not defend humanity's existence by using the method you just described. Its bullshit, and flawed.

@@not.enoughto.go.around6176 can you provide any evidence to those really rather reaching claims? Don't tell me to Google it, thats lazier than the argument you are making.
I was Navy (1967-71). The ship i was on carried 500 Marines everyplace it went. We pulled into St. Martin as a four day liberty port with our full compliment. I can say this, if your in the military, you haven't experienced a REAL liberty unless you have spent it with the Marines. Friendliest bunch of guys i ever met. We were thrown out of two casino hotel's (one on the Dutch side of the island and the other on the French), one brothel (french side), wrecked about a half dozen of those little cars they warned us NOT to rent, stuck the Dept. of Armed Forces with a HUGE bill for hospital costs and property damage and we were politely asked to leave port and not come back, by both the French and the Dutch that very first night. Naturally, we spent the next 3 days, us (ships crew) doing non-stop ships drills and the Marines doing non-stop physical drills. Well worth it for the great memory if nothing more. Of course, this was back in the old days when women weren't allowed on ships. :-)
I celebrated my 21st birthday at a bar in the city filled with Marines on fleet week. Lemme tell you, it was a BLAST. It was truly a memorable experience. I made some friends and they kicked my ass in beer pong.
@Lvl 1 Togepi well in certain places the women are taken advantage of. My father was a Persian Gulf veteran and he actually saw first-hand sometimes the way that women were treated. Like there was one drill sergeant he got every girl pregnant that was under him. And they completely demoted him. But it's the same thing with how you know Manor traded to course I can't get pregnant but some men were sexually assaulted as well they just don't talk about it. Like this one guy he said that he was just walking and he saw this the MP's come over tackle that bastard to the ground and the rest of them turns out he rapes them dude in the showers. But yeah it's not just women that get sexually assaulted in the military it's also men as well. It's just that the men they don't talk about as much. But I know that's what they're talking about or the women like being sexually assaulted and stuff like that like you get sexually assaulted in any job or treated like shit in any job. The military is no different.
"we have a lot in common! She is from Michigan and my dad has family in Michigan" I believe that is what people on the internet refer to as a "bruh moment"
>"Most civilians' exposure to the military is through over the top Hollywood portrayals of front-line combat." > shows Jarhead Um. LOL? That move had no front-line combat. That was kind of the point.
Lmao jarhead was sooo not over the top, even I was fucking bored. Leaving the theatre I felt as if I just finished a full ass nine month deployment. Great movie for sure.
These girls are brand new to the military as evidenced by their ribbons and rank.... Kind of a misguided view of what it is to be in the service when they just got in... Maybe talk to someone that's been active longer than a month or 2?
I was active duty about 25 years ago. I worked in a male dominated career field and never had issues or saw anyone being sexually harassed. Respect to all of my fellow veterans and those serving.
I was in the Navy and did fleet week right after we had "Killed" Osama Bin Laden. One of the best times of my life. You are pretty much as celebrity up there. People will buy you anything you want. That trip made me fall in love with New York. Great people and some of the best food.
I knew a bunch of Air Force lieutenants when I was in college and they would feel sorry for any senior enlisted men who had a female lieutenant. The women were constantly trying way too hard to dominate and show rank. My male lieutenant friends would just do what senior enlisted men told them to do until they figured things out themselves. It's basic respect that women can't know so they overcompensate with petty dominance rituals.
The bun hairstyle is the best, neat and professional. In the military you are all there to do a job so everyone should be seen as equal. Especially if everyone gets the same training. Great to see women in the military especially at higher rank. Also, if you want to improve relations between civilians and the military, you have to be professional, not get wasted, otherwise you will lose your job.
@Tabora you literally repeated what I just said, but you added that there are jobs that don't require combat. Regardless of whether you are a combat job or desk job, you will deploy .
@Tabora listen my friend, in this day and age, or at least for the last 15 years, due to the conflicts that we have been involved in, if you have not deployed, it's because you avoided it. ESPECIALLY if you have been in long enough to become an E-6. Those are cold hard facts my boy. Those people are cowards. They simply want the title without the danger.
@Tabora again...there are jobs like accounting or Laundry, but they STILL deploy. They wont be out in the suck shooting people, but they will be on base doing their job in a danger zone. Regardless of your job, when you swear in, part of that oath is to defend our country, from our enemies, both foreign and domestic. The OATH my boy, not just a rumor, this is what you swear to uphold when you enlist. So, with that being said EVERYONE deploys, ESPECIALLY if you've been in for longer than one contract. If you have been enlisted, within the last 15 years and haven't deployed, it's because you're a coward and are avoiding it.
The chances of deploying these days are slim to none if you’re not infantry - I was in from ‘13-‘18 and never deployed. Hell, even a lot of infantry guys won’t deploy unless another war breaks out...
“Most of civilians exposure to the military is through over the top Hollywood portrayals of frontline combat” Yes, but you used Jarhead as an example. *The only movie I have ever seen that accurately portrays modern deployment*

:-)
