Why is veterinary care so expensive? Why shouldn’t vets make a million dollars a year?

  • I am a small animal veterinarian who talks about the cases I see, the vet practice I own and the profession I adore although feel terribly afraid for. This is in response to the article the high cost of veterinary medicine done by The Atlantic. For more see my blog at KMDVM.blogspot.com. Or find me on Pawbly.com or Jarrettsville Veterinary Center in Maryland USA.

Y’know, I don’t often run into _happy_ medical practitioners here in the States. That’s not the case in countries like France & Ecuador, or just two countries I’ve been to where healthcare professionals don’t make a significant fraction of what they can make here. They do make solid incomes - they’re comfortably well-paid, but they’re not getting stinking rich & they _are_ deeply satisfied & typically happy people.
    What’s _that_ worth?

We had to decide to euthanize our precious baby because we couldn't afford the $4,500 for just the MRI.
I have decided to stop getting any more animals due to the ridiculous, outrageous prices.

So upsetting. Thank you for the info and honest talk, as usual.

Most of the retiring vets who’ve sold their practice that built the clientele are very disappointed to see what they deem as price gouging.
Most folks who own pets love them as much as family members, but sadly they are euthanizing at a higher rate because of cost.
Most families don’t have HUGE amounts of money in bank accounts especially in this time of high inflation.
If more vets had more reasonable prices, than more folks could afford the care and be repeat customers.
Too many families are NOT going to opt for high cost care over FEEDING families, paying rent or utilities. So VETS lose out having repeat customers to sustain the practice.
I believe the older vets had it right and stayed as vets because they loved animals and the owners.
    Money doesn’t buy happiness

How can a vet charge exzorbant costs and know that the client can't afford that high cost. How do the vets have a clean conscience and sleep at nite knowing that that dead pet was more precious than you.

It would be great if people who do work that vets need to have done on their houses or cars or anything would sort of join forces and start charging vets 5 times what they charge everyone else as a matter of ethical payback, and see if those vets love good ol capitalism. Call it some eye gouging for some eye gouging
