  • For many of us, our home can become a time capsule of the past instead of a launching pad for the future, and a haven for respite. Today, let's talk about how we can declutter for our "future self", keeping in mind our future goals and seasons!

Last week I printed this out and laminated it for us to use when we clean out our garage.
Yesterday, my 19 was doing a deep room clean as preparation to move out. I put this sheet on his bed as a guide. When I checked in on him..... he said the sheet was the first thing he threw away! 🤦‍♀️🤣

I like how you started out your decluttering session with picturing how your life will be in the next 5 to 10 years. I don’t think I’ve ever asked myself this before. Very helpful thought process for decluttering. Thank you😊👍

I had green paint that was too bright. I took it back to the paint counter and they mixed in bright fuchsia, the opposite on the color wheel. It is perfect and everyone comments on what a beautiful green it is!

I love how you use the term “will my future self use this?” “ will i actually have the time in a year or 2?” This is me with scrapbooking materials, I have a pile of Disney ones and have yet to scrapbook one of our trips. I do not want to get rid of them so I am now making it a priority to make an album! Thanks Diana and dawn for the motivation 💕

So wise to" keep things for our future", not things from the past that are no longer useful. RE: Christmas tree storage: We cover ours with a big bag and take it to our basement fully decorated and stored it until the next Christmas. Yes, you guessed it.. we are so happy to have a fully decorated tree waiting for us each year for the last several decades. We plug it in and enjoyed its beauty. I realize some homes don't' have the space and that homes with children, half the fun is to decorate, so this plan wouldn't work for them. But.. great for empty nests.

Funny enough I had a bright green paint too - I used it for the inside of my sons large closet and it was perfect. The bright color can help the darker space pop and when the closet is full of clothes it feel a bit more toned down. Plus I didn’t waste my money!

Once upon a year, I found a blog written by 4 mamas of 8-12 children each. Their consensus was if you aren't sure you will use clothes in 3 years, pass it on. Take into account gender, season, etc. That was freeing!!
Camping with little kids is actually really fun.
Crafting. Ahh. My fantasy self. I got yo deeply declutter and ONLY KEEP the stuff I REALLY WANTED! It was amazing!

I laughed when you giggled about the exercise stuff. I can totally empathize with the implications of that. I held on to my last pair of running shoes for such a long time because I didn't want to admit that I hated running or gave up on running. I've been finding that this is a journey of coming to terms with who I really am. Enjoy your decluttered basement!

My husband recently cleaned out our dining room closet , where we store a lot of our kitchen items ( our kitchen is small). He had a huge box of stuff and asked me if I wanted any of the stuff he pulled out to purge? Guess what? I said no to all of it.... didn't even look in the box. He does all of our cooking ( he said my cooking made him fat) so I said if you don't use it lets get rid of it. It was a very large amazon box . So happy to have that closet purged out. Next plan is kids clothes, should be easy as 15 year old has grown out of most of it.

Decluttering for your future self. What a powerful statement. How many times have I kept something because I thought that I should keep it because I used to do that hobby or project. It doesn't mean that I won't pick up that hobby again, but in this season I need to be realistic about what I can and can't do or even have time/desire to do. I've let so much go in this past year that I feel so much better when I look around our home.

This is so important, to re-evaluate and let our past selves go. I developed some health conditions that resulted in my no longer being able to go backpacking/hiking. I kept my equipment for years, but it didn't feel good to keep dealing with my "past self" whenever I needed to move it around. Letting it all go actually felt freeing.

So inspired by this I tackled my husband’s shed today even tho it was cold. I loaded up the old shudders, empty boxes and boxes from electronics he had kept. It was so easy to grab easy items to declutter that wouldn’t over step in anyway. He has items nicely organized on the walls but had parents who were from the generation that kept everything. It a delayed decision making issue. We talked and I told him he has a nice space and I just want to see it be a more useable space that he can keep and find the things he uses regularly. There’s more that needs to be cleaned out but that’s a project I’ll let him do when he has time. I think he will be motivated by the removal of the excess.

Decluttering for the future self - that’s good. It is what I am doing right now, too. Soon a mother of two little children, maybe a third afterwards, I figured out, I will not have time to play with six gaming devices (Game Boy, PlayStation, Computers...) for the next years. I am happy if I can have an evening twice a month. So I will keep one or two I really like and sell the rest. The good thing with gaming devices is that you can sell them for a good price after years. Actually a few games are now more expensive than ten years ago when I bought them. They make place for crafting stuff for toddlers and more space for the little ones to jump around :)

We have camped with all 4 of our babies starting when our first was 4 months old. Always love your ideas and inspiration. I'm glad Diane kept the camp items. I've camped pregnant, and my girls w bottles and in diapers. My oldest even learned to potty training in her "magic potty" :) while camping!! It looks like Diane has a home sized inflatable bouncy house. I used to set it up in my living room (great for days). Also set up many tents or camping fun days in the living room too. I miss those days, my kids are highschoolers now.

Uuhgg! God bless you girls! You did it. Basement storage is tough. Remembering lugging it down the steps little by little and now it gets hauled up all at once, Load it in the car, drive it around and find a nice drop off place. 🤮 (I think I should have taken a nap before commenting! Lol)

I need to go through the garage so I plan on replying this video for motivation. I dred the amount of stuff needing to be donated and how to fit them in the car.

Multiple trips! And then you don't have to do it all in one day.
