One thing that a friend does with coupons, and I have started, is to keep them in a ziplock type bag. She, and now I, keep that bag in our vehicles. I was at Bed, Bath and Beyond the other day and I had my coupons!!!

I love these kinds of videos where you walk through Diana's clutter spots. I feel like Diana is substituting for me, so it seems like you are walking through the spot with me. :-) Thanks Diana, for being the example for us. Thanks, Dawn for helping walk us through not only how to deal with it, but how to come up with a system and then the system run-through. Love this! Would love to see more like this!!! Other hots spot ideas...desk top (and inside), refrigerator outside (so many things get magnetized on it), computer files, file cabinet, spare room, by front door (where everything gets dropped - multiple pairs of shoes, dog leash, purses, bags, coats, stuff to go places, etc)

Some ideas that have worked for us. We live in a split level, so lots of stairs, I have several stair baskets and things that belong elsewhere go in the up or down basket, and when you next go in that direction, you take the basket and put things in the room they belong. This could work for items that are more than 10 steps or 30 seconds away. I have a mail sort area that has a letter opener, recycle bin, shredder and a file folder holder with 3 folders labeled Pay, File, Needs Action. We have the same three files in the office and just switch the folders when they are empty. I also try to go paperless as much as possible. If I can't scan it or get an electronic version I take a photo of it with my phone and store in the appropriate album. all my statements are on line. My e-mail has a junk folder and I mark some e-mails as junk and it is automatically filed in that folder and I can empty the whole junk folder with 2 clicks. hope this helps someone.

I have those mail cubbies too.... and I don’t use them for the out of sight out of mind concept too. HOWEVER, one slot holds the stapler, one holds the tape dispenser, another a 3 ring punch. So they each have a home and I know when they are missing!
Would be a perfect spot for the selfie stick for FaceTime 🤗🤗

Dawn you are such a great sister, you never cast judgement, you are always a positive helpmate. You have been given the gift of organizing and helping us all look at our own lives to minimize. Diana, Sunday mornings I wake up to see what God wants me to hear from your honest and authentic sermonette! That is exactly where our chaos counter is--beside the fridge. Everything my husband and son aren't sure where to put, or that needs to go downstairs gets dropped on that counter. I like your 30 seconds rule. We're good with the mail. For us, what worked was to create an office space and move the file cabinet and shredder into the kitchen where we open the mail! Life changing. Seriously. Every piece of mail gets either filed, recycled or shredded (anything with personal info), immediately. Removing the extra distance of having to take the mail to another room fixed the problem for us.

I had a super hot spot on our kitchen counter too... so put some plants & a bowl of fruit there so we're "forced" to deal with the items instead of leaving them there for later. Also made a paper inbox for my husband and I in our respective offices for the papers that were getting left on the counter. Clearer space & we're eating more fruit too!

I can't believe how much fun I'm having downsizing AGAIN! Actually taking downsizing up a a few octaves to decluttering. Yes, I often have you on in the background as I'm going through my house. I have new eyes and a new perspective, I have your voice in my head that no matter how much it cost, if i don't use it, I'll never see that money again. SO freeing. I do have a method I've used for years to attack an area I want to free up. It's the five-or-ten-item approach that takes just a few minutes to get me started. I'll choose a certain number of items that I know I can put away quickly. Honestly? I rarely get to five or ten before I'm on a roll, in the groove, having fun again as I see that surface cleared.

You're a real trouper, Diana! We've got a catch-all area just like yours as we walk in the front door of our kitchen! I actually tackled it a couple days ago and made myself find homes for whatever I didn't chunk or recycle. =D Here's a tip I use for keeping my car tidy every day... When I get home from work, before I get outa my car-- I put any mail/random papers/wrappers/little items in my LUNCHBOX!! That way when I make my lunch for the next day, I empty out that stuff and keep my car clutter free! And sitting down in my clean car each morning feels motivating and refreshing!

I am a Cricket (Clutterbug). I like to group things into piles and transport them all at once.
Our old house was one floor with a basement and the kitchen table became the clutter spot because it was right near the basement stairs. It was overflowing and unusable.
When we moved last year to a house that has a second floor as well as a basement I bought a couple pretty, small fabric baskets (8” diameters). One sits on the stairs going up to collect/corral items going up. The other sits on a small, round side table in a niche next to the basement stairs to collect/corral things going down.
My parents’ two mantras when I was growing up were: Turn off the lights! (LOL), and Don’t go empty handed. So I just grab a basket on the way up or down and transport the stuff. It is nice having them contained so you are not juggling snd dropping items.
If something doesn’t fit in the basket, especially the one for the basement, the table is only 1” wider than the basket, I just deal with it immediately.
I do still have issues with dealing with the items once they are moved...but at least we don’t have piles on the main floor.

That way she frees up the awkward place it's at now over by the stove , it gives the space a specific purpose, she could even put a few cute mugs up above on the shelf! Otherwise it's very easy for everyone in the home to start placing random items there again . Great video ladies👍

I have gotten ride of over 1500 items so far, but was losing motivation and still have a very cluttered home. Started doing a minimalist challenge with a friend. She is getting ride of the typical amount. I have gotten ride of 60-75 items a day in only ten minutes per day (only two days in). I think I can maintain 30 items a day for 28 more days. I like the 5-10 minute get ride of what you can. It has helped a lot with the items I previously did not get ride of. It makes decisions easier when I know I have 5-10 minutes to find about 30 items I do not want. But I have been minimizing for 1.5 years so the decisions are now coming easier.

I decided to get a small desk organizer for this spot to keep my meal planning book, iPad, charging station, grocery list, calendar, etc. i have added it to my weekly routine and clear any build up/address pending items once a week. I generally do it Mondays and have bundled it with my meal planning/planning my week routine. This works so much better and I don't have a pile anymore. I organize my receipts using those plastic boxes that are used to keep index cards in. I have one for warranties, one for just Target, and then another for all the other stores. Older receipts get put in the back. Every now and again when it gets full the older ones in the front are ready to toss. The "Other Store" box receipts are in alphabetical order. Aldi: receipts one two and three- i fold the next receipt in half and shove it there after that third receipt. So the fourth Aldi receipt is nice and snug between the third aldi receipt and the first barnes and noble receipt. :)

FLY Lady Hot Spot. Exactly! She suggests to clear your hot spot every night (I don't always do this). Also, Tuesday is Paperwork Day. Wednesday is Anti-Procrastination Day. If you schedule those into your routines it'll become a breeze.

This has nothing to do with your video but I wanted to share something that happened the other day. I'm a SAHM to 3 kids and we are on the journey of minimalism. A family member asked my kids what they wanted for Christmas. They honestly couldn't think of anything. Minimalism really does flow to every part of our lives. Love your channel!

For Christmas this year my neighbor gave me one of those ink rollers to cover up your address & private information on mail. I use it as I open the mail and toss things that I used to have to shred. I absolutely love it. In fact my husband bought himself one to keep in his desk, too. It says it's good for 1600 swipes so with the volume of junk mail I get that'll probably last me maybe till summer. 😂

If u go to dollar general in their notebook section they have a spiral bound notebook, it says home finance and bill organizer. It's suppose to be a spending ledger, it's broken up into months. Each month has a pocket to put bills or receipts in. I love it for receipts, since most bills come through our email now. Whenever I get home from shopping I'll put the receipt in the current month. It's also small enough to fit right in a glove compartment or center console if you want to leave it right in your car.

I would probably convert it to your coffee center. It is tucked out of the way, so usefulness as a counter space is minimal and may prevent future "dumping zone".

Although not a minimalist in my decor I definitely like order in my life. I have eliminated most of my paper mail by getting bills online. And the junk goes in trash sometimes before it comes into house! Love your tips and your sister banter.

I really have been enjoying your program Dawn and enjoy seeing your identical twin Diana with you. My youngest of 5 children are identical twins and they are each other's best friends but due to marrying and the jobs their husbands do, one lives on the West Coast and the other lives on the East. But they face time and have been able to travel out to see the other when ever they can.

What do I do to sort out a hotspot? I watch one of your videos, of course! Well at least it gets me started. I love how you all give suggestions, share rationales, and totally tell on yourselves as you go!
Right now, I have an entire breakfast bar that stays cluttered 😬 With your help, I’m cleaning it off completely. I think I’ll put a plant, a fruit bowl, and 2-3 place-settings to occupy the space, and render it unclutter-able!
Thank you again, and keep ’em coming!

This space looks like it would be a great coffee station. Sugars, coffeecups, etc in the little cubbies, etc. Or, move the microwave over there to free up the prime real estate next to the sink.

I love having a letter opener, scissors, pen and sharpie in a cute container in a spot like that or in the drawer next to it so I can easily open the mail (the thought of papercuts!) as I process it for recycle, etc. and to sign something right then or make a note on it for myself or the other people in the house if needed. The scissors are for opening packages. Even though I have all those things in my office (in case I really don't have the time to sort through it all and I stash it straight in the office for Saturday processing) it is worth it to me to have them in the kitchen too because that is closer to the trash and recycling in the garage that is probably 6 steps away! You could even have a wall mounted holder with those items in the garage next to the trash and recycling bins :) I love to organize by nature but what I wouldn't have given for you and minimalism when my kids were little (18-20 years ago)!

To keep mail under control: I leave early for afternoon pickup. Get mail. Sit in car line and go through it. When I get home, whatever we don't need goes straight into the recycle bin outside, that way it never makes it in the house. It is astounding how much mail never gets inside!

so much fun! Watching you two tackle Diana's hotspot and the excitement when Diana discovered all the stuff she thought she lost! I also love your mail system I work the same way. And I also have a sign on my mailbox I don't want any folders. Wich helps a lot with the ’I need that feeling’. Same as with your e-mail subscriptions unsubscribe to make sure it doesn't come in the house in the first place. I now can safely go on holiday for a couple of weeks and not find a pile of papers in my mailbox.

Great job!! My kitchen counter used to look like this all the time! You guys came up with some great strategies! The one that has probably helped me the most in tackling paper clutter (I was a piler!) is this: I have 3 files only in my kitchen. Those files are “address” “reference” “taxes”. At first I had to schedule in my planner to check my “address” file so I wouldn’t forget about it, but now it is just habit! I check my “reference” folder every time I check my “address” file and simply ask myself if I still need that receipt, contact, whatever..the “taxes” papers get taken downstairs to my office when the file gets full. I used to make it waaaay too complicated, separating files for each bill etc, but that actually caused more work. Now it is a breeze! Oh, and also important is, I moved as many of our bills online as possible..that was huge! I hope this helps someone!!

    • @AWanderingEye
      @AWanderingEye 5 років тому

I am considering something similar. I have set up Marie Kondos paper system but after a bill gets paid I had been accumulating them for the year in their own file folder in a cabinet. Since I shred those after December's bill is dealt with, I will in 2020 just use a "Chronological to-shred" bin under my desk. That will eliminate about 8 file folders and no more filing those things so specifically by business name. If I need something it won't be a hardship to dig through the box since I rarely if ever have to review paid bills. Wish me luck!

I'm tackling my hot spot beside my kitchen phone at the end of my counter tomorrow morning after watching your wonderful video! What better time since we'll be having family over for Thanksgiving dinner and I've been meaning to do it anyways. I also try to get the junk mail in the trash before bringing it in, but hubby doesn't always get on board so it will pile up on the kitchen table. I need more hours in the day. Thank you girls, love your vids and am subscribed!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families.
