- In the mid-1990s, gaming made that scary jump into the third dimension and had no intention of looking back. For quite some time following that leap, 2D platformers, along with many other 2D genres, took a back seat as developers and consumers looked to the future, embracing the possibilities of a whole new dimension. Today we will put aside Mario and Mario-adjacent heroes to shine a spotlight on the rest of 2D gaming’s best and most brilliant, as we look at examples of the genre new and old that don’t star the world’s most famous princess-saving tradesman. Nice shout out to the Disney platformers, there are so many! Aladdin on Genesis, Tarzan on PS1, you could make a whole separate list of these. *cough hint cough*

Will of the Wisps was my goty 2020 and probably my favourite metroidvania of all time.
It’s absolutely stellar. I was completely blown away by how amazing it was.
I live on Vancouver Island, and I had no idea we had a "Mt. Celeste"!
Great list! Although they are more on the 'Metroidvania' side of things, I would like to recommend the Guacamelee! games, The Messenger and ICEY. All three are amazing 2D platformers!
ICEY is more of a 2D hack and slash
"Freedom Planet" definitely deserves a spot on such a list because of it being based heavily around the 16-bit style Sonic games, especially before "Sonic Mania" was even released, and it also happens to be my most favorite indie game title of all time due to its colorful graphics, tight responsive gameplay, amazing soundtrack, and cast of characters that are both appealing and cute.

Seriously wish Tarzan and Hercules were included in that Disney classics game collection released the last couple years. Such fond memories!

A fantastic list of great games.
I'd throw in the (seemingly) underappreciated Teslagrad and Iconoclasts. Both are fun to play through and perfectly mix puzzling with platforming.
I've never played Castle of Illusion but we had World of Illusion and I used to play that all the time.
Also Rocket Knight Adventures is soo good
The co-op in WoI was fun

Ori is THE ONE! I'd advise anyone to play them.
AL GORES RHYTHMS
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best of the classic Sonic series.
I was expecting Hollow knight to be near the top, perhaps even #1. To not even be on the list at all blows my mind 🤯

Reminds me that as a kid I used to love a really often forgotten series called James Pond ... good times
I recently discovered "the adventure of little Ralph", a brutal 2d platform game only released in Japan for the PS1. Worth looking into.
Great list, I would rank them differently though
I also changed the entrance from 3 series and replaced rocket knight because I never played it

I always found Limbo to rely too much on trial and error; INSIDE is a better game along virtually every dimension.

Ori and the blind forest is fantastic. Best platformer I have ever played and one of the best games as well. Will of the wisps is also good, but blind forest is the better out of the two.
Whoa Sonic 2 got first place. Superb! Can't beat a bit of Hill Top Zone. I bought The Sega Mega Drive Collection on ps4 just to play Hill Top Zone!!
One day someone somewhere will mention Duke Nukem 1 & 2. Surprised no Shovel Knight too.

I can't believe that Ori ended up outside Top 3! The bash mechanics alone is just incredible and the person who created it should get a reward.

I'm surprised Will Of The Wisps wasn't on here,but some other great games are Tropical Freeze,Donkey Kong Country 2,and Mega Man Zero 3 Zero 3 is one of the best action platformers I ever played I would put it above even Mega Man X.

Okay... 'limbo' but no 'inside'... thats a bit of a disappointment. Sure, limbo is a very good game, but inside... is the best these story driven sidescrollers can be... The rest of the list is great keep up the good work!

Ori is just THE Spirit of the Forest, in my opinion.
It turns out that mountains have tons of berries of different varieties. If you are looking to compare a mountain with a video game think open world x 1000.

most modern platformers are not fun at all imo they're just obsessed with being difficult just to be difficult and always present themselves so pretentiously. Just give me a DK Country or Mario World. cuphead and meat boy and etc, I just don't see the appeal

Ori and the Blind Forest has great art. Unfortunately the gameplay is quite lacking.

For pure platforming the ori is top notch. The only thing lacking in the first one is combat which is not what it was about.

Sorry but Sonic 3 & Knuckles was wayyyyy better than Sonic 2 in just about every way. Not saying Sonic 2 is bad at all though but Sonic 3 even on its own was so great at the time
