The story of Louis Zamperini is one that actually brings a tear to my eye because of the message of reconciliation and hope. And it's nice to see an analog horror that has a deeper message that's actually hopeful.
The moment some random comment said that "It's kinda wholesome how he is always there, makes me feel less lonely :)" I stopped finding this analog horror scary tbh
That comment is the exact same thing people say about SCP 1471 and why some people started to find it endearing or even cute despite its terrifying appearance (aside from... y'know... the fanart. But even then, that reason also ties in to all that fanart existing and it, for the most part, wasn't just r34 for r34's sake). The only difference is that, aside from The Boiled One never getting that fanart treatment (and if it did, it's clearly very rare and not all over the place like SCP 1471), The Boiled One is very clearly dangerous and has sinister intentions, to the point of having physical and psychological effects on its viewers. Whereas if you pay close attention to the SCP 1471 article, Mal0 is completely harmless. it just wants to keep people company like the app says, and people who've used the app react differently and completely of their own accord rather than some outside force giving them paranoia or something.

The Boiled One might have the most creepiest design and concept (in my opinion), at the night I first watched it, I couldn't stop thinking of that face. Honestly terrifying.
7:46 it's absolutely true, a huge part of horror is about making the audience feel safe, oftentimes with nostalgic imagery that elicits feelings of childhood, than it pulls the safety away, whether slowly or rapidly, but it eventually takes advantage of your emotional vulnerability in that moment of nostalgia. There's a reason many Analog Horror artists are within my age group (younger millennial-elder Gen Z) as for us, our childhood was the last time we were thoroughly exposed to VHS and CRT

This is one of the few analog horror series that actually makes me scared. the image of The Boiled One pops up into my head right before I'm about to go to sleep way too often
I've seen people criticize how much PHEN is shown in the video, when that is the whole point of it. It's established in the video that viewing him is dangerous and that's how he gains influence over his victims. He appears so much so that the viewer still remembers him after the video is over and when going to sleep, I sure did lol- Just like the characters in the video. If we add that detail to the points you have made, about PHEN infiltrating the things we find comfort in, it is now more apparent that he has indirectly infiltrated something else. That being the viewer's comforting thought that what they are seeing it not real and it cannot hurt them because it's behind a screen. It effectively blurrs the line between fiction and reality. In short, seeing PHEN so much with the context of his powers attached to it, makes the viewer paranoid lol-
I’ve watched my fair share of analog horror that’s left me creeped out or disturbed, but it never really terrified me. I watched the boiled one and it was the first time since I had listened to The Caretaker’s Everywhere at the End of Time that something had disturbed me so bad that it stayed with me for days. Hell, at night I was having to double check my angled lamp to make sure it was a lamp and not something about to paralyze me. The design and the music was just so skin crawling and the note about people witnessing him having feelings of anxiety made my GAD ass freaked out. Not to mention just the utter horror of him making you a prisoner of your own body while he feeds off of you alive… Thank you for your funny editing of Phen btw. It makes it a lot more palatable to listen to this
It's fascinating how different people perceive different things as scary. Maybe I'm weird, but I find PHEN rather goofy and almost cute, especially when he slowly pops up behind the old man's bed 😂 But the whole backstory and historical and religious implications are really interesting. And I think that's the best part about analogue horror. If a story is compelling enough, you *want* to know more about it and start researching.
His design and story is very scary ! Me who I tend to be kinda paranoid was horrified during nights because I felt as if PHEN was piercing his eyes into my back. Very cool work, it has been long since I’ve last got this scared !
the fact that it followed you into your nightmares is terrifying. its like you're one of the characters within the anolog horror. i don't know how they do it.
One weird thing I’ve never heard anyone mention with this Analog Horror is that 530 people viewed the broadcasting, but only 509 were paralyzed in result of watching it. I would imagine that the remaining people who weren’t effected where either highly religious people, like priests or pastors, or had some other medical condition that made the broadcast less effective like being deaf for example.
My only issue with Finn's look is the eyes are way to gentle looking to be horrifying. I feel if they were more sunken in and mean looking, it would work. The rest works.
That's what makes it work for me, he's scary but also not disarmingly aggressive or mean looking, he even talks calmly, which I think makes him scarier, because you can't tell what it's true nature is
I feel that's part of the point ,finn probably feel that its doing something good and kind for humanity perhaps is actually something good in a cosmic sence? We simply don't know it adds a lot to the scared factor of the tape
All I can really throw in is that, the JermaSus face issue is the reason I DON'T find the design scary. I don't know if it's just an association at this point, but whenever I see a "monster" with a really big smile, I assume it was made by a 12-year-old. It's the least scary thing in the world to me. Which is a shame, because the rest of the video is fairly unnerving.
Think of it like the whole among us crewmate thing, it exploits your mind's natural tendency to find patterns even where there aren't ones, and since your mind doesn't find that pattern interesting or frightful, anythibg yoyr mind recognizes as it will therefore lack any fear factor
I still stand by my theory that PHEN is the embodiment of trauma and PTSD, that's why he only appears to some people and doesn't seem outwardly malicious. He *is* Watanabe but he is also locked-in syndrome and paranoia and trauma and PTSD and anxiety and everything else, he's not pure evil because while the pain of your psyche can ruin you it can also shape you into something better
I have my own just for fun theory that The Boiled One, or as I call him, Mr. Phen, is King Paimon as seen by scared religious people. For those who don’t know, King Paimon is a high ranking member of the Ars Goetia, a catalogue (ha) of 72 demons in the Lesser Key of Solomon. He’s also mentioned in a few other grimoires. It’s important to note that most of the spirits depicted on the Ars Goetia are actually fallen angels rather than traditional demons. King Paimon in particular is known to always be accompanied by a procession of trumpets and percussion wherever he goes, and known for having a deep, booming voice, and of course, wearing a crown because he’s a king after all. Here’s what I think went down. King Paimon hijacks Broadcast 813 to alert and prepare people for the upcoming rapture. He even tones down his usual booming voice as a sort of be not afraid precaution. Unfortunately, he chose to hijack a broadcast in Pennsylvania, well known for its deeply religious people and Christian fringe groups. Because he’s a fallen Angel, and easily on par in power with both lovecraftian deities and even archangels, his very presence is cognitohazardous, and the deeply religious people of Pennsylvania see his form as the horrific Mr. Phen. The outbreak of pseudocoma among his witnesses is another effect of his very nature. However, Mr. Phen has no idea his presence is hazardous to humans, (or he just doesn’t care cause he’s got shit to do), and continues to find ways to inform the public about the rapture. Obviously this isn’t a watertight theory, just something for fun. I do think that the prevailing theory that he’s the personification of all the suffering Watanabe caused (sort of like a cross between an Onryo and a Gashadokuro, which is a whole other can of worms) is the more correct theory.
I find the very concept of cognitohazards to be immensely terrifying and I wish horror videos included trigger warnings for them. I literally couldn’t sleep for days after learning of Roko’s basilisk (don’t look that up) and now seeing the Boiled One Phenomenon has just pissed me off.
while i understand that religious analog horror is scary to a lot of people, i genuinely just find it cheesy as hell, but also i think it's kinda sad that we havent seen a ton of different religious takes on it, most of the popular ones with religious themes are about christianity, which i can understand since it's one of the biggest religions in the world, but i think it would be much more interesting and refreshing, and potentially scary, if we saw other religions represented. idk that might just be me being tired of christian theming tho, to me it feels like it's all a very same-y at some point
Okay, now that I really think about it, Phen reminds me of the Spongebob episode "To Fear A Krabby Patty". Specifically, the scene where Spongebob dreams that a giant, sentient Krabby Patty comes into his room at night, and he expects to be eaten, but the Krabby Patty just wanted to check on him and make sure he was doing okay.
I watched and recorded a lot of movies and cartoons on VHS as a kid, often alone and too close to the TV, alone and sometimes they would break or get corrupted or damaged from being used, and I remember that's what scared me most about the Ring. I didnt know what was after the statis, behind it. The idea that the black tape was hiding something or that if I recorded enough something mi9ght speak through it-- that was so unreal and disturbing. Not to mention the blood curdling SNAP and crackle when you reached the static/end of the tape. That shit scared me so much.
To add to your point about the vhs aesthetic in many analog horrors being scary bc of the feeling of having your safety invaded, I think it's also because with the nature of more analog devices like tapes and cassettes having less convincing/polished editing and splicing tools as modern technology, in a way it kind of feels "more real"? Like something about seeing something terrifying, otherworldly, and unexplainable on say, a random vhs tape found in the attic of some nobody, it feels startling because it's less plausible that someone would be able to convincingly fake a video of someone unhinging their jaw and eating a persons head if they're just some guy without the resources to make it look good. And with PSA/government announcement style analog horror, a part of the fear of invaded safety is also in seeing the powerlessness of the structure of your world in the face of something infinitely more sinister and dangerous. But idk I'm just yapping
I have a different interpretation of the Christian imagery the Boiled One invokes I think it represents a different lens through which one can interpret the Christian faith. A lot of the uglier parts of the Bible people often ignore, brush over, or try to justify. It's instead looking you in the eyes and going "What if it's real, but isn't justified? What if Christianity is just a real life cosmic horror story? What if you're willingly preparing yourself to be consumed by a being you cannot hope to understand?" This may be because, as a trans person, I've seen a lot of the uglier side of Christianity, and to be clear I think there's something far more convoluted going on than just "god is evil and we're all going to be eaten by him hahaha", but it's still a possibility worth considering. Also, you should watch the Film Theorists video on how the Boiled One Phenomenon may feed on pain. I feel like you kind of brushed past all the poison oak imagery (and reasons to distrust the "government agency") the Boiled One Phenomenon tape was apparently leaked from. It's really neat. In conclusion the Boiled One Phenomenon really freaked me out and it's my favorite Analog Horror since... hell, Local 58. I've never seen another Analog Horror that freaked me out as much as Local 58 except for the Boiled One Phenomenon.
The thing that scares me so very much about this thing is the fact that... well... that one image of Phen looming over the bed looks EXACTLY like how my view is from my bed during slight daytime hours. The one difference being the fan blades
I feel like even though I think he’s pretty neat nowadays, the fact that the creator can put the monster in full view in the thumbnail and it STILL scares the vast majority of viewers is a true testament to a piece of media’s potential.
i don’t know if you’re familiar, probably not it’s a really niche band, but there is a local band from NY called Silenus that made a music video called “The Garden Is Burning” that uses a large, inhuman figure that looks eerily similar to a makeshift Phen-228 figure. it is a GIANT statue near the halfway point of the video and gives the same vibes of bastardized christianity, cults, end of the world, etc. their music also goes hard as FUCK.
The reasons I love the boiled one are: One, 228 is genuinely fascinating to discuss both in terms of design and ideas. Two, considering I find Doctor Nowhere to be more of an anthology, I don’t find the execution to be the worst.
I do like the video, but the title always makes me think of "Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the Honored One" scene but with the Boiled one instead of the Honored one
I actually dont see the story as a bastardization of the bible, but instead a love letter to the bible, showing some of the truly terrifying aspects of the bible without falling into herasy
If you love the monster design of Phen, you must have seen BOISVERT by now and it not - envision Phen animated in 3D … and mentally prepare BOISVERT series playlist in order: ua-cam.com/play/PLUtMdfebeaoe4Xosu4YIej33ZU81zjl8u.html&si=m-MKIby-MkjHBHjD
Phen-228 probably came first. It stands for "Phenomenon (that occured on) the 22nd of august (a.k.a 22/8)", and anything else regarding 228 is related to Phen-228. Ephrata-228 is probably a devision of the Ephrata Branch that deals specifically with things relating to Phen-228, and protocol Brevita-228 is absolutely a procedure to keep oneself safe after being affected by Phen-228
@@Zoobydeeby but if the great North East blackout of 2003 occurred on august 14th, and the broadcast occurred on august 13th, I think that the phenomenon occurred on the night of august 14th. Right?
Can someone answer me this question: Why do some of yall find that THING so hot? Genuinely, not trying to sound offensive, I respect it if you have certain kinks or like him in general but seriously, what IS IT that's so hot about him? 💀
My younger sister and I love horror, and we liked the video, but we both went into it genuinely thinking that it would be about a guy who got boiled alive and became a zombie (please tell me we're not the only ones who thought that). So we're planning on making a fanfiction about what we thought it would be about.
hey man, I recently discovered your channel, and I love the content. I have one bit of criticism about the script. there are several times where you start a point by saying, in my opinion, or me personally, you used the, "I, personally, (rest of the sentence)" a lot in this video, but in the video about the good and bad of analogue horror there were more "*pause* in my opinion (rest of the sentence)" I don't know about the other audience members, but I don't need you to say it's your opinion to know that it's your opinion, I just assume that because it's your video it's going to be about your opinion. you already have that part at the beginning saying that the video is mostly opinion so I think just leaving these interruptions out of the script would be an improvement and allow for more dramatic line delivery if you feel like doing so in the future. You don't have to implement this; the content is already really good.
its kind of an in-joke for me and a few friends to say i jack off to phen 228 but!!! it's probably the ONLY analogue horror that's really reached me properly. ESPECIALLY w/ its religious connotations!! when i was 15 i wound up in a pseudocoma due to gbs and i turned to religion after it. eventually i kind of had a crisis about it and pivoted into atheism, but that doesn't really draw away ANY of this wonderful horror piece's impact for me. i missed out on the plushie run for this guy and am genuinely tempted to make a homemade one just to keep me company. he's like... my little blorbo guy.

Ironically hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words
Okay, now that I really think about it, Phen reminds me of the Spongebob episode "To Fear A Krabby Patty". Specifically, the scene where Spongebob dreams that a giant, sentient Krabby Patty comes into his room at night, and he expects to be eaten, but the Krabby Patty just wanted to check on him and make sure he was doing okay.
Fun fact, during Zamporini's interview, you can see PHEN's spikes right above the bottom of the window :D
I subscribed to you. 3D Monster maze is scary without any sound. REX HAS SEEN YOU
I watched and recorded a lot of movies and cartoons on VHS as a kid, often alone and too close to the TV, alone and sometimes they would break or get corrupted or damaged from being used, and I remember that's what scared me most about the Ring. I didnt know what was after the statis, behind it. The idea that the black tape was hiding something or that if I recorded enough something mi9ght speak through it-- that was so unreal and disturbing. Not to mention the blood curdling SNAP and crackle when you reached the static/end of the tape. That shit scared me so much.
watching this sleep deprived im so cooked man (the video is so good but i am SO scared)
But idk I'm just yapping
excited to see whatever you do next.
just binged your horror videos while trying to sleep
doing good
it’s insane that you don’t have more followers keep up the good work bro👍🏼
I have a different interpretation of the Christian imagery the Boiled One invokes
I think it represents a different lens through which one can interpret the Christian faith. A lot of the uglier parts of the Bible people often ignore, brush over, or try to justify. It's instead looking you in the eyes and going "What if it's real, but isn't justified? What if Christianity is just a real life cosmic horror story? What if you're willingly preparing yourself to be consumed by a being you cannot hope to understand?"
This may be because, as a trans person, I've seen a lot of the uglier side of Christianity, and to be clear I think there's something far more convoluted going on than just "god is evil and we're all going to be eaten by him hahaha", but it's still a possibility worth considering.
Your videos are so fascinating and entertaining to me. Please please keep making videos like this 🙏
0:36 still one of my all time movie monster designs. Right up there with the demon from Smile.
True, it's horrifying to think what we'll see when we meet the baked one, the sauteed one, or the roasted one.
Phen should be the 5th smiling friend tbh
He so comforting and funny when I see him only thing I CAN do is smile. He'd be perfect for the gob
I can't see Phen without giggling like hell now, I put a picture of him as my phone background and he always looks goofy as fuck when I see it
I think the boiled one is cute? its face looks like its making a pog face constantly :D
dude they're selling a marketable plushie of it now
@@OhHeckItsTristanI'm buying it, I need my compressed version of the embodiment of trauma
Holy shit. I never thought that this analoflg is so deep. Thank you for this video!
PRIME THIRD: WAIT OF THE BOILED ONE
holy fuck actual god tier comment
side note, a boiled one ultrakill mod would be so goated
fucking
Watanabe Prime
8:38 the way i fucking jumped at that hand 😭
Fear not the dark, my friend, and let the feast begin.
i don’t know if you’re familiar, probably not it’s a really niche band, but there is a local band from NY called Silenus that made a music video called “The Garden Is Burning” that uses a large, inhuman figure that looks eerily similar to a makeshift Phen-228 figure. it is a GIANT statue near the halfway point of the video and gives the same vibes of bastardized christianity, cults, end of the world, etc.
their music also goes hard as FUCK.
Dr nowhere is a series the locust and phen are both types of cognito hazards and the latest video have a government aid
the boiled one❌️ the oiled one ✅️
im gonna get you
5:24 Heh, it sounds like he said “Fent is incredibly freaky”
Music list? Total bangers choice!
Tristan I love listening to people yap I really think you're awesome sauce
The reasons I love the boiled one are:
One, 228 is genuinely fascinating to discuss both in terms of design and ideas.
Two, considering I find Doctor Nowhere to be more of an anthology, I don’t find the execution to be the worst.
Oh cool finally someone who goes over the boiled one
The Boiled One when he meets The Broiled Two
Check out Midwest Angelica!
Cant wait for the doctor nowhere/smiling friends collab (seriously though that would be really cool)
Your analysis are the shit‼️
I do like the video, but the title always makes me think of "Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the Honored One" scene but with the Boiled one instead of the Honored one
Great Video! Love Your Content!
5:50 its too late,he got you,now all you can do is pray.
I actually dont see the story as a bastardization of the bible, but instead a love letter to the bible, showing some of the truly terrifying aspects of the bible without falling into herasy
I lock tf in when i'm on that fent 228
If you love the monster design of Phen, you must have seen BOISVERT by now and it not - envision Phen animated in 3D … and mentally prepare

Why is the number 228 repeted so meny times in T.B.O?
Phen-228, Ephrata-228 Personnel (not the Ephrata Branch), Protocol Brevita-228
Right?
POOKIE WAKE UP, TRISTAN POSTED!
Music from the intro?
can't take that design seriously when he looks like a hyperrealistic george washington
Bruh I need Gilbert Gottfried in every analog horror just to make my day lol
I can’t with the jjk references😭
What’s the name of the music at the start of the video?
As a Malaysian Chinese/Catholic, we know about Japanese Atrocities
am i the only one who discovered this AH from fucking meme when a man points at phen and says "would"?
Can someone answer me this question: Why do some of yall find that THING so hot? Genuinely, not trying to sound offensive, I respect it if you have certain kinks or like him in general but seriously, what IS IT that's so hot about him? 💀
Im sorry people think *WHAT* about him
@@divine555 Trust me... I don't understand either mate 😭😭😭
Do you have any advice for starting to make content?
Should I make bacon chemsburbuer
I find the way its mouth is animated really hard to take seriously
Nah id beat the shit outta phen like my sleep paralysis demon frfr i defo don't have main character syndrome
My younger sister and I love horror, and we liked the video, but we both went into it genuinely thinking that it would be about a guy who got boiled alive and became a zombie (please tell me we're not the only ones who thought that). So we're planning on making a fanfiction about what we thought it would be about.
I personally think Phen is a lovely little guy
I think he likes smiling friends... not sure tho
ULTRAKILL MENTIONED GRAHH 🗣️🗣️🗣️💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥💯
you should check out a series called "war from beyond" i think its decent lol
Have you watched Skinamarink?
I like the cuphead ahh music he puts with the video lol
Phen looks like it’s wearing a black sweatshirt
Great video, thumbnail is lacking
Wasn’t this popularized by Local 58..?
hey man, I recently discovered your channel, and I love the content. I have one bit of criticism about the script. there are several times where you start a point by saying, in my opinion, or me personally,
you used the, "I, personally, (rest of the sentence)" a lot in this video, but in the video about the good and bad of analogue horror there were more "*pause* in my opinion (rest of the sentence)"
I don't know about the other audience members, but I don't need you to say it's your opinion to know that it's your opinion, I just assume that because it's your video it's going to be about your opinion. you already have that part at the beginning saying that the video is mostly opinion so I think just leaving these interruptions out of the script would be an improvement and allow for more dramatic line delivery if you feel like doing so in the future.
Now do cassowary carnage
