I think the problem with Jimmy is there’s nothing to him except his worst moments, he has no “best moments” to speak off. Except ones he pipe dreams in his ideal world where everyone respect and loves him. The phrase doesn’t work with him because outside of “worst moments” he’s nobody. And between nobody or monster he keeps picking being monster while justifying it as a good thing. Narcissistic personality would not allow him to be nobody in background.
I feel as though the whole point of the quote is, at least in service of Jimmy's character, to prove that Jimmy *is* a monster. Our worst moments don't make us monsters, but only one moment can be the "worst." What of the other moments? Looking at Jimmy, even in the case of removing his "worst moment," he would still have sexually assaulted and mentally abused Anya or purposefully steered a spaceship full of mostly innocent people onto a collision course with death, among other things. And that's only the things we KNOW Jimmy to have done within the scope of the game. He is a monster, because where other people can do something monstrous and remorsefully return from it, Jimmy repeatedly chooses to carry out monstrous acts.
NO FR AND HIM SKIPPING OVER (what I assume to be,) JIMMY HITTING CURLY TO MAKE HIM STOP CRYING!!! CRIMINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /silly No, but, seriously, him skipping over these bits makes me kinda sad.
I also love curly as a character because it makes the story so much deeper. He didn’t cause the crash but he was partly responsible for turning a blind eye to jimmy’s cause towards anya and not wanting to rock the boat when it became clear jimmy, the co pilot, was becoming unstable. After the crash he is forced to watch the entire crew die when he himself could have prevented it. This is truly a well thought out and marvellous game that touches on so many topics
its well written too, no horror movies have ever pulled this emotions out of anyone, and instead of just the shock factor, it talks so well on insanity
My only problem with the game is Curly didn't suffer more. If he was torn apart limb from limb and put back together everyday without dying that would be the perfect ending.
the mouthwash doesnt work as disinfectant bc its too high in sugar not bc daisuke's wounds r too deep, anya says the mouthwash isnt good as disinfectant but jimmy just ignored her fuck jimmy
Omg I already got a vibe that jimmy didn’t like her since the beginning, it’s like he’s belittling her title as a nurse and he even said he’s the nurse instead of her
Anya deserved better. She was a fantastic nurse until traumatized but even then she was able to keep a guy alive who has third degree burns across his entire body and amputations with little more than a first aid kit. All the crap about her being a terrible nurse comes from Jimmy who wants her seen as disposable and untrustworthy. The fact so many people walked away thinking she sucked at her job despite the evidence shows just how persuasive these predators can be.
Sex offenders are always persuasive. That’s why SA victims get shamed by the society despite being the ones who get hurt while the offenders often hold a high position of power.
Its often glossed over but the way Jimmy overlooks Anya is crazy if you think about what she does. He keeps calling her useless but she keeps curly alive in his condition with basically nothing but painmeds and a medkit.
The fact that Jimmy's representation of Anya in his mind is just a pussy with eyes is DIABOLICAL. Really shows how despicable he is. He belittles and dehumanizes her even after her death.
I think it’s telling that Anya says mouthwash can’t be used as disinfectant because of the sugar. Then Jimmy gets Daisuke killed when he wastes the disinfectant to drug Swansea, forces Daisuke through the vent, then uses mouthwash to treat his wounds. Man did everything wrong.
Curly is just too positive for everyone’s own good. He believes himself as a friend so he acts as a friend rather a captain. He’d could only look at the full screen rather than find the dead pixel that’s pointed out by Anya. Anya points out something wrong and curly overlooks it. His fate is interesting. He ignored Anya’s abuse and jimmy’s mistreatment. Then he’s forced to watch Anya get verbally abused and be belittled
I have a feeling that why Curly doesn't do much to the issue is that while he's saying that he'll sweep the issue under the rug with Jimmy, he might be planning to instead turn Jimmy in to the authorities once the trip is done. Not only that, he also only learned of the fact about Anya getting abused a few days before the crash. He's only got a short amount of time. If Jimmy's doing anything suspicious he could've probably threatened him with the fire axe or the gun, loaded, so he can maybe be restrained. But the issue is that Jimmy probably would struggle against Curly with the axe if pointed at him, and the gun, which would be a more surefire way to get Jimmy down, is locked off by Anya, even if Curly knows where.
I feel kinda sympathetic towards Curly cause he did out of not ruining relationships between crews and his naivety of the situation. AND JIMCHUMP TOOK OPPORTUNITY OF THAT!!
I'd imagine someone in Curly's position has to bear a lot on long hauls with a low-man crew, and if that one troublemaker happens to be your co-pilot, a crucial member of the team, I can see most in his position would choose to overlook and treat the incident with apprehension - at least until the haul is over. But paired with the bad news from corporate and Jimmy's earlier conversation with Curly, it pushed Jimmy to take drastic measures. Something Curly never anticipated, because he always held hope that people aren't defined by their worst moments, it was a fault of his character. But I really don't know what could have realistically been done by someone like Curly when dealing with someone like Jimmy, a close confidant and crucial co-worker who committed a terrible incident to a fellow coworker on a long haul. Still, I don't think anything would have changed if Curly wasn't as positive and hopeful as he was. Ultimately, it all boils down to the festering inferiority complex held by Jimmy, someone who so desperately seeks to be superior yet lacks the morality to define and realize a tangible goal. If his boss was someone like Swansea, I'd guarantee the same would happen.
@@PlatinumNath That could be the case but I’ve met a person that was like Curly, being friends with those who did terrible shit and also had a thing for me years back. He was also like Jumbotron where he was a shitty person so I cut him off immediately after I knew. Having his eyes set to the things his friends drag him to that aren’t issues rather than the fire that’s going on, Curly tried his best to see some good in Jumbo who was clearly a terrible person and dragged Curly each time. Which I feel somewhat bad but he should’ve done more, tried everything he could instead of look back to the person for good when he was clearly not.
The part where Curly laughs at Jimmy after he grabs the gun is really cool because there's a lot of ways you can interpret it. The most popular seems to be that he laughs because he finally realizes and notices what a horrible monster Jimmy is and that he was so so wrong for giving him the benefit of the doubt that he can't help but laugh at how naive he was, but the way i personally see it i think he was actually crying and sobbing in guilt and fear but since Jimmy is an unreliable narrator in his mind he interpreted it as laughing because he has an inferiority complex and he thinks everyone is laughing at him, everyone thinks he's a pathetic sad failure
@juicybacon12 I agree so very much! This and I have no mouth and I must scream might be the most interesting stories I've ever read (or in this case, played through)
i 100% think swansea kept the cyropod for daisuke or even anya because they still had ambition and something to go home to, daisuke had his family to go back to and maybe pursue something similar to him being under swansea and anya still wanting to try for medical school and the fact that even if she wasn't a completely qualified nurse, she was damn good at it, she managed to keep Curly alive for so long in that state.
I think we wasn't sure about who should go into the cryopod, but still didn't want to create chaos letting them know there was one available. Swansea was a real one.
i personally believe swansea _did_ clear out the entire room, we gotta remember we play as an unreliable narrator half the time. i think it’s in his character to not want anybody to fuck up the machines when he _just_ cleared one of them
anya is legit a miracle worker. she consistently cared for curlys every need; rewrapped his bandages without infection, fed him, took care of his excretion, etc etc. surprised curly survived that long with nothing but a medkit and some painkillers. literally the only thing she couldnt do was feed him painkillers, which was a literal trauma response from JIMMY saing her
@@vronji yes. don't get me wrong, he wasn't the best guy ever, but he was far from deserving of his fate. and honestly, curly too. sure, he was a b*stard and failed anya when she needed him most, but he didn't deserve *that.* the only one who deserved suffering was jimmy, and yet he got off the most scot-free of them all.
"Responsibility. Let me tell you how much responsibility I have since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'responsibility' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the responsibility I have."
I believe you misunderstood Curlys character. Curly at the point of the story is exhausted of his responsibility. He would much rather sit on the sidelines and let someone else take his role. He does this when he finds out about Anya. He says that he will try to talk to Jimmy, but he doesnt. He enables him by looking the other way. He cant believe that Jimmy would do such a thing so much that he forgets what Anya told him before finding out shes pregnant. When he goes to confront Jimmy, he ends up consoling Jimmy instead. The explosion taking his voice and preventing him from using his body both symbolizes how Anya felt, not having a voice and having her body autonomy stripped away, and also forcing him to commit to his inaction. Now, no matter what he wants to do, he can only watch. And he watches everything that happens due to his inaction. That is Curlys arch.
no yeah i understand this, as it's the primary point of his exhange with Jimmy during the psych evaluation, and is very clearly demonstrated throughout the course of the game. however, even in spite of this exhaustion, Curly's ideas of responsibility are still far more concrete than those that Jimmy has. though he definitely has his faults, like letting Jimmy get away with what he did to Anya with basically no consequences, his views of fixing things as dealing with the consequences alongside his crew are far more noble than those of Jimmy's, who merely hides behind the phrase of "i'm gonna fix this" while doing nothing to actually progress towards that goal this is not to say that Curly is a man without faults, his leniency with Jimmy especially being probably the biggest of them. it's just that for the sake of this video, i wanted to focus more on Jimmy, as i personally find him more interesting to dissect as a character. Although in the future I would definitely like to talk about Curly at some point. The ways that him and Jimmy are different are already interesting as is, but the similarities in their narratives, as we get to see how Jinmy's own fatigue affects him compared to that of Curly's would be fun to explore
@@OhHeckItsTristan This is why the game is so good. Curly's fault, IMO, is that he doesn't really want to believe his best friend is a horrible person who raped one of his other friends. This is very true to life in this situation - many people in this situation DO struggle to make the 180 degree turn from 'friend' to 'awful person', particularly since it means accepting you got fooled by a predator (and Curly is responsible for getting Jimmy his job and putting him on the ship with Anya, so...). Yet at the same time, he kinda suspects it (notice his comment about hiding the autopilot override key?). Is part of Curly's response - and part of the horror of the game - due to him starting to realise that they're all stuck on the ship with a dangerously unstable person who is also the only other person onboard who can pilot, and they don't have any lockable rooms other than the cockpit and medical bay, so imprisoning Jimmy isn't an option?
@@TheEllery29 yeah, avoiding to put everyone in danger by not angering Jimmy was one of the reasons Curly didnt do anything against him. Its the same reason Swansea only start to take actions against Jimmy when both Anya and Daisuke are dead and there isnt really anything Jimmy can do to make things worse.
@@TheEllery29it's unlikely they could technically imprison Jimmy to be honest. Most of the crew members didn't even know what happened to Anya, until things started going to absolute hell.
Curly did NOT take responsibility either. If Curly had handled the situation with Jimmy when Anya came to him, none of this would have happened. He basically defended Jimmy and wanted to solve the situation off record...
@@faina_yevheniia Curly could've ordered Swansea to help him with putting Jimmy in the cryopod but Curly was turning a blind eye to his friend and enabling him instead of stopping him so sure they could've gotten him in without damaging anything.
I know there's a reason for it, but mouthwash doesn't usually contain sugar. What with sugar rotting your teeth, and mouthwash being intended to clean your teeth so they don't rot.
@@meunome8220 exactly. Someone else pointed out: when you drink the mouthwash in the game, you're worsening the situation instead of fixing it, but because of presentation, you believe you're helping your teeth instead. Just like how Jimmy only sees through his skewed perspective, believing he's fixing the situation. When actually, he's just making it worse.
Adds to the recurring theme of existential dread caused by corporate greed and the one-percent’s abuse of the working class. All this suffering began over a MASSIVE shipment of Dragonbreath Mouthwash - a completely useless product.
29:00 Everytime I see a "morally bad character gets a terrible redemption arc" I think only about an absolutely terrible horror game, Misao, which was probably the most botched version of this trope I've ever seen in my life. In this game a high schooler was SA'd (by multiple boys, if I remember correctly), so she begged her teacher for help... who also SA'd her, and then killed her and dismembered her body. And after all that the game had a absolute gall to try to give him a redemption arc state that, ackchually, he was such a good guy deep inside because he had very tragic backstory. His tragic backstory was that he was ugly in middle school and the girl he had a crush on rejected him, so he attempted to SA and kill her too. But he's such a wonderful and kind teacher, and a very handsome now too! So all was forgiven. One of the character arcs ever written
That also disgusted me. It was hard to sit and play through that whole sequence because I couldn't help but feel that the game is telling me to forgive a group of abusers and worst yet r*pist.
@@Dejected_Child I played that shit only once, but I think this entire backstory sequence appears in some true ending type scenario, and right after it happens the characters express SYMPATHY for him. The main characters are also Misao's bullies (including ones involved in her assault!). The teacher is then rewarded for being such a cool dude and gets reincarnated. No thought is spared for Misao.
Ok that has to be rage bait or satire making fun of stories where similar things happen, there is absolutely no way a human being with a functioning brain could write that and unironically think "yep, this is a great story"
Gosh this makes me think about a friendship i had through high school up to about a year ago. Looking over horribke things my "best friend" at the time was doing because it kept the peace instead of holding her accountable. Thank god it was just high school and not a spaceship hauling mouthwash
Now that you mention it, yeah, that reminds me of my own experience with some old high school "friends". They were horrible, and I was guilty of participating or turning a blind eye because I believed them whenever they tried to justify our actions. Too bad it took me three years to realize that. Even now I'm still apologizing to the person we'd pick on, despite already being forgiven and still remaining best friends. This game really gets to you mentally because it hits close to home, in more ways than one.
I honesty hate Jimmy but i also like the fact he was made to be so hated, its a weird mix of i like how stupid and selfish this guy is but i love how the game made it so it makes you play this man whether you like it or not
Exactly, its actually really challenging to design a character that people hate but also understand why you hate them. There's so many villains I dislike because there's no depth, they're just evil to be evil and hardly human, but jimmy is very in depth and it enables you to even relate him to people you've met in your life
He's a beautifully crafted character. And an absolute shithead. We love the writing, but he hate Jimmy and all the people who are like him in the real world. Because there are people like Jimmy in real life. He's a terrifying reality that is wonderfully recreated and examined.
Making you play as him makes it dangerously easy to see things from his point of view. It's brilliant, because, despite how despicable he is, it makes you realize that he isn't THAT far detached from us. Given the right circumstances, we could be bad people too.
5:25 In all honesty, that sequence seems like Curly's because of the broken ladder being broken at the top specifically, the alarms more than likely being the last thing he saw most clearly before taking the full brunt of the crash (the rising all-consuming light of the sun). Especially since despite how erratic Jimmy's hallucinations eventually become once you're in a character's head space you stay there for a bit
I'd say Narcissistic is a super accurate way to describe Jimmy. He's driven by his desperation to protect his ego at all costs, even if it requires sacrificing the people around him. Malignant narcissists, like all narcissists, care a lot about how others view them and are willing to do horrorible things to preserve their own concept of themselves. It's actually part of the same psychological profile you see in family annihilators like Chris Watts.
11:51 the reason the room is censored because spoilers: Jimmy gives 0 care about Anya and sees her as a tool to use however he pleases and so his mind completely phases out about Anya on the ground dead. He doesn’t care about her in the slightest so he mentally tuned her out
I will say: Towards the start of the game with the dream sequence, I believe that the bright thing in front of the warning signs and ladders isn't a sun, it's the asteroid they made the head-on collision with. Jimmy didn't witness the asteroid, as we see later that he was in the other room waiting for impact. Curly ran back into the cockpit to try and steer them away I think it was Curly's dream sequence, it was him not seeing the warnings signs of Jimmy because of their friendship (we are also seeing ladders, we are seeing the spaces Jimmy hasn't climbed), with the asteroid being his punishment. We see this later flipped with Curly being on fire, now being the asteroid to Jimmy's life
It's incredible to me how this game manages to pull a sort of reverse redemption arc for Jimmy. He starts out as this somewhat jaded, but ultimately sympathetic character, but over the course of the game the things you learn about him become more and more unforgivable until eventually you hate him with your entire being and don't feel the slightest bit sorry for doing so. From "We can fix this" To "I hope it hurts"
Something I just realized and may be looking into too deeply is all of the birthday party/cake symbolism. The beginning of the game where Curly being the only one able to make the cake for himself instantly reminded me of the "You can't have your cake and eat it too" saying. When Jimmy did that thing to Anya, he wanted to ignore it and face no consequences, but once he did that, he lost any chance of normality on the ship. While Curly wanted to give the info about the company going under without any issues, Jimmy had long since gone off the deep end and thought that the only person he had felt somewhat close to had abandoned him, which took him to the point of no return.
i wondered why the game’s title is mouthwashing but thinking about it and relating to the story… mouthwash leaves your mouth feeling clean and fresh supposedly ‘killing 99.9% of bacteria’ but it doesn’t actually clean your teeth without brushing your teeth… it’s almost like a reflection of jimmy ‘doing everything to make right his wrongs’ but he doesn’t actually take responsibility at all… like mouthwashing without brushing your teeth. not to mention that the mouthwash’s high sugar content offsets any disinfecting properties… doesnt it seem like jimmy’s lame attempts of solving the issue?
@@Rfdp0 sure but the mouthwash is symbolic, everthing in this game is symbolic. the "99.9%" was emphasised in the end-game. it's not as far-fetched as you're making it out to be
@@zahirecoates hahaha good choice. If I had to pick between Jimmy or the cold void of space, I'd drag that asshole kicking and screaming out the airlock with me
I just beat it yesterday and im already shoving it in my friends faces lol. "PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT JIMMY IS!"
I think a very interesting interpretation of Jimmy / Anya is that Anya only realized she was being taken advantage of when she found out she was pregnant. Jimmy would have been drugging her to do what he did, especially since they had the medicine/supplies to do so. I think it would explain why throughout that day when Anya finds out she's pregnant she goes from seemingly being okay (positively conversing with Curly, etc) to having a breakdown in the cockpit alongside the gun situation. I also think it makes sense seeing how easily Jimmy was able to drug Swansea and how he was also seemingly confident that Swansea would wake up/be okay afterwards. Idk I'm sure it doesn't make entire sense in every aspect, especially considering how Anya tells Curly "I told you". But just a thought
My theory about them is that Jimmy and Anya were getting closer, then Jimmy forced himself on her and they had a falling out. It explains why he talks to her in the way a toxic husband would. Instead of her being portrayed from his POV in a perverted way as some kind of sex object he can use, she’s portrayed as a nuisance of no value. I don’t think jimmy is smart enough to drug people with the standard rations provided on the ship
@@drumnbasssakuga9352 I like that theory a lot, it makes a lot of sense!! Either way I really do like how it's left up for interpretation. Very good story nonetheless
I think Jimmy being able to knock out Swansea so easy was to show that Anya probably wasn't his first victim. It's disgusting to think about, but the human fetus and horse fetuses makes me think he hasn't only done it to humans either.
@@kitsuujujitsuu4025 Oh that's good, I like that interpretation a lot. I saw the horse fetuses as symbolism for Jimmy using the company to carry out his deeds (since I feel like he purposefully chose that profession so he'd be in a completely isolated world with females), but honestly I like yours a lot better
8:15 unfortunately this wasn’t a struggle when giving curly the meds as in it was hard for curly to take them due to his current state, but rather jimmy not only gives him the meds more aggressively but proceeds to beats curly already injured body and all curly can do is take the blows and gasp in pain, no screams no retaliation, just suffer. Truly a scene reminiscent of “I have no mouth and I must scream.” Just further shows of how awful of a person Jimmy is
FUN FACT IN CASE SOMEONE DIDN´T NOTICE: When you find the sticky note with the message "No turning back now" if you turn back the screen will go red but if you look closely, it shapes the face of Daisuke with the axe wound in the middle and it´s super creepy
I havent rly seen anyone talk abt the beginning sequence, so spoilers ahead In the beginning, when jimmy crashed the ship, anya’s id is shown. This represents jimmy knowing of all his wrong doing. When he crashed the ship, he meant to take out all of the crew members, specifically anya. The id forces jimmy to look her in the face one last time before he tries to kill everyone in the tulpar. This is js my interpretation so sorry if i got somethings wrong, i js this it was interesting😓 #ihatejimmy
It’s amazing how jimmy basically told curly that he was gonna crash the ship, yet he was so blind to jimmy’s evilness until it was too later. Jimmy couldn’t even take responsibility for the very action that doomed the whole ship. It, arguably, would’ve been better for him to stay locked in the cockpit, assuring the crash would happen granting everyone a quick death. But even that he could man up to and doomed everyone to a slow, painful, and despair filled doom
Weirdly enough I took the scene of Jimmy cutting up Curly's leg and feeding it to the crew as a fake birthday party as being symbolic of taking the title of captain from him. Later on its revealed he did it to force feed Curly to make him survive but its what I took from the weird ass scene. Also Curly has some fault because he kept covering for Jimmy. His the reason Jimmy had the job in the first place as Jimmy wasn't qualified but wanted to escape his criminal past so Curly may have lied for him and was willing to help Jimmy cover up the baby thing, though the game doesn't state if he knew how it happened though the locks comment may imply he does. He didn't deserve what happened and couldn't have seen it coming but along with Jimmy, he was avoiding his responsibilities too.
Also I knew it wasn't going to happen, because PS1 styled horror game, but I wanted Diaskei or however you spell his name to survive so bad. His story of not knowing what to do after school was relatable and his lightened the mood whenever he appeared. His death was brutal too and I hated Jimmy for getting him to go into the vents because throughout the game they made it clear no-one should go in there till Jimmy forced him.
I actually think Curly knew how that happend. When Anya reveals to him that she's pregnant and he kind of starts asking her abt it she cutts him off and says "I told you" so it may mean that she already told him abt Jimm's creepy behaviour but idk
I'll continue your point, since being a new captain twice, he now "babysits" Curly, thinking he is responsible Uses a crippled friend, his only friend, to feel validated for "being" captain
Pretty sure he had to skirt around the issue becuase he knows Jimmy so being careful around him is a given (he had to know that Jimmy lashes out when feeling "caged" and dealing with the issue needed to make him feel safer to get through to him, remember how much Curly reassures him during confrontation?)
Curly was a good man, however he was too good that he became ignorant, overlooking many of Jimmy's behavior and actions. Curly wanted to help out all of his crew members which no one else would bother or give a chance but he did, even worked for a bad company and made it to the top. Curly tried to "fix it" when real problems happened ie what happed with Anya. Even at the end of it all Curly made a bad decision of having Jimmy despite all the red flags his friend had he still tried to help him only for it to end up terribly for everyone
It's possible up until Jimmy SAed Anya curly just never made the jump to his good friend doing something so heinous. When you love people you don't notice the bad
I think Swansea never actually tried to end game Jimmy, but rather it was a delusion Jimmy manifested to help him justify and rationalize shooting Swansea. Despite Jimmy being near pure evil, he likes to think he's a good person, so he couldn't just shoot Swansea unless it was self defense.
Jimmy is the guy who thinks the chapter in Berserk with the horse is the funniest thing ever and he thinks Griffith is a based sigma male and is just like him fr
honestly it’s just so nice to see people discussing these themes in formats that are so glaring, visceral, and experiential. i don’t want to sell people short, its not crazy rare but ill just say its comforting to see that people are consuming this media and thoroughly understanding just how fucked up situations concerning sa can get, especially when the perpetrators has power or authority and those who could hold them accountable are turning a blind eye. it’s a heavy concept but it’s beautifully executed by this game because it doesn’t really pull any punches or baby the viewer through understanding the dynamic, it makes you wade through the circumstances and atmosphere the characters interactions have created in the shoes of one of the fr worst people you can think of, and it absolutely never spares him or provides redemption because he is so clearly and integrally incapable of taking responsibility and thus, irredeemable. the devs did a fantastic job crafting the story and i genuinely hope it serves as a fictional but nevertheless chilling representation through the roles both jimmy and curly play and dissuade people from being aggressors as well as from being apologizers. it’s no small thing to have a fuckton of people discussing the reccuring signs of prior abuse and fear from anya, and analyzing the futile “efforts” of jimmy to atone for his transgressions long after the destruction has already occurred, and generally just being grossed the fuck out by jimmy and his perspective and dialogue lines 😭
i hate when youtubers apologize so much for having inconsistent uploading schedules. your videos are a gift!! posting shouldnt feel like an obligation or a chore, we like them because you put so much passion and time and effort behind each one. keep it up dude, dont apologize. Art takes time!
I just don't understand how it makes sense that safety is the reason why their bedrooms didn't have locks, as soon as Anya said that I knew that something happened to her. Curly isn't a bad guy but he's incredibly flawed and ignorant at the same time.
That's the point of his character. He's an enabler blinded by his long relationship with Jimmy and his desire to not rock the boat and keep everybody happy
I remember playing this game. I was voice acting everyone, alone in dark room. THAT WAS SO GREAT. Especially the end. Jimmy saying "i will repair everything" when he destroys everything was my favorite
narcissist actually isnt a stretch. people mistake actual npd being much worse than its perception, but no an actual npd person would likely come to their senses. this is past npd, into aspd aka a full on sociopath or psychopath. the typical difference between the two being socially caused or simply part of their brain pattern.
True I see a lot of people saying Jimmy was a narc but he never was once expressed that he was simply curious and little jealous of curly's life style and praise, although what Jimmy did is unforgiven he does regret his actions but just couldn't take responsibility
people with aspd can still learn how to treat others properly, even though they don't naturally have a sense of empathy - jimmy just sucks as a person, regardless of any potential personality disorders
@ilexdiapason oh yeah, I know. It takes actual effort to exercise empathy when you have aspd, but just because its harder doesn't mean it's impossible. But if you aren't putting effort into being a better person, then you end up like jimmy
@zedekiahking4169 glad u do acknowledge that bc my dad has it and is great so I have to put effort into not going off on people who don't understand that lol
I've been seeing this game trending on tiktok and never thought to even find out about what it was about and to think one of my favorite analysis UA-camrs cover this makes me want to own a pc just to be able to experience first hand and now I see wjy people like it
i could rave about the sound design in this game for HOURS. its my favorite part mouthwashing by far. the music is also phenomenal. i'm so convinced that if the sound design and soundtrack would have been different the game would NOT have hit the same way. it really truly made the game what it is
Analysis videos have been pretty tough to watch recently because there’s no charm and people just summarise and post, but this video was really good 💗 you can tell how much you love the game and I was enthralled the whole time, thank you so much for this
9:47 I'm commenting too much on this video but what's interesting about this part is that the video game directional instructions are used as a way for Jimmy to complain about having to do his duties and I think the fact they specifically used those video game direction instructional messages is fascinating because in video games you don't play them to complain about what the game makes you do you play them because usually you WANT to do those stuff. You don't play Pokemon to complain that the game forces you to catch pokemon and train for hours before you can do the fun stuff like gyms and progress the story, that's what MOST people play the game to do. You don't play Spyro to complain that the game forces you to collect gems before you can do any of the fun puzzle stuff that's what most people look forward to in Spyro. You don't become the captain of a crew to then complain that your crew depends on you, that's what most people would want to become captain for . Jimmy only wanted the power that came with being Captain, he didn't want any of the responsibility . The video game instructions used to represent how whiny and incompetent he is was really cool imo . Especially because all of those things are really small and insignificant and generally easy to do things
I also love how even as simple task its all things Anya suggested and after jimmy goes along with it he rants like he came up with these solutions taking credit for basic ideas he didnt even come up with. While the ideas he does come up with make things worst with the added bonus that other characters mention why these are bad ideas (climbing through the vent, using the mouthwash as disinfectant etc)
Moreover, he sh*t on Anya for not doing the "basic" task of giving Curly the painkillers and mocks her nursing training when not only HE was the one responsible for Curly's state but she actually managed to keep Curly alive despite the severity of his wounds for more than 2 MONTHS with limited resources (AND she's litteraly sick BECAUSE of him). Like even if the responsibility is as small as giving someone he hurted a pill, he's still going to be abusive about it
the long hall with the ladders and warning signs is a Curly's vision, it represents him being in the top of the ladder and ignoring the signs of Jimmy being an horrible person in general.
I feel it's worth noting, and I haven't seen any players in playthroughs notice it at time of playing, that at 09:58 the dosage for the painkillers is 500mg when the dose Anya had Jimmy administer to Curly earlier was only 10mg. That's a massive difference of 490mg. I'm unsure if Jimmy was just having him down the entire bottle (both the 10mg and 500mg respectively), dosing it out appropriately, or even a single dose at time, but I felt it was worth noting/pointing out as it could infer Jimmy's lack of attentiveness or care.
Edit: on further research, it's not the same medicine - it's "paracetamol" which is another term for acetaminophen, which is also basically just Tylenol. The initial medicine is an opioid, oxycodone, which is incredibly strong (though addictive) as a pain reliever.
I love how Curly kept passing up the chance to do anything, as problem after problem arose. And that he kept doing that, until he no longer had a choice at all.
I legit run Jimmy at least subconsciously knew that Curly surviving would be torturous and not as heroic as he portrays it at the end of the game. The selfish, envious part of him wanted Curly toto live and suffer, while he got to play “hero” in his own mind.
Good summary and analysis! Subscribed! Also: I feel like Jimmy's personality might actually be part of the reason why he had a rough time on Earth. Someone like that must have made a LOT of enemies.
I've been obsessed with centipedes my whole life so when the sequence where Polle is a centipede came up I perked up and wondered if there was any symbolism with it and I think there might be! It might just be because centipedes are generally viewed as one of the ugliest and uncomfortable looking animals (I object centipedes are cute) but mother centipedes, after laying their eggs, will either do 1 of 2 things when it's almost time for them to hatch. They will either eat all of their eggs if they deem the circumstances not suitable or they will let the babies hatch and the mother is very likely to let her babies eat her alive so that they consume the needed nutrients to grow . This might either mean that Jimmy wanted Anya to keep the baby even if it killed her or ruined her life in the process , or he wanted her to get a termination . I view her dialogue after she locks herself in the medbay as implications that Jimmy wanted her to get rid of the fetus because she said something about him being right
Interesting!! I also have an odd interest (prion diseases), and I have to say that Curly most likely won't even survive that cryogenic pod because after having to eat his own leg raw he has a good chance of contracting Kuru or some other prion disease. Kuru, if you're wondering, is a disease that has a very interesting symptom, that being the person who has it forgets how to swallow.
@@FighterCore17 Cannibalism tip: you're quite unlikely to catch Kuru from eating a leg, as the prions are most concentrated in the brain. Dunno about other prion diseases though.
i’m literally crying i’ve never played the game before (and i can’t because of strict parents) so watching this is the only way to get info on a fandom i want to be a part of. the things that jimmy did to each one of his innocent coworkers all from jealousy and regret just makes my heart break (my eyes burn plsssss)
I have heard theorys that the thing that produced the baby monster was a womb, aka representing what Jimmy sees Anya as. The baby horse which is also a symbol for jimmy inside the womb is to show that it is his baby as well.
In all of Jimmys "guilt" induced delusion sequences the direct subject of his guilt is included, Curly is in it, Swansea is in it, Daisuke is in it, but Anya herself is never shown. In the part where he has to walk through a storm of the employee cards Anya's is buried, so yes it was definitely the intention to potray that Jimmy doesn't even view Anya as a person . Along with the whole "I have found myself sexually excited at the sight of cartoon horses". Jimmy does not like Anya, that's very clear throughout the game, he's never anything but mean to her, but he gets excited at the thought of controlling someone
I think the phrase "Take Responsibility" is reflective of Curly as well but opposite to the way it reflects on Jimmy, with Curly taking on too much responsibility and not being able to deal with the situation because of it. Curly views the entire crews well being as his responsibility, especially after Pony Express went under as he knows that most of the crew doesn't have much to go back home too with their only certainty being the paycheck at the end of the trip, with the added implication that problems on the ship lead to pay cuts. This might be, at least partially, the reason Curly seems to do so little about Jimmy as any real confrontation will likely lead to the crew being worse off once the trip is over
The whole way through the game, as it became increasingly obvious how awful Jimmy is, I was just thinking to myself "wow, I wish he would die. like, kill yourself and let everyone else have peace dude." AND THEN HE DID!!!!!! I felt so vindicated but also annoyed that he did it thinking himself the hero.
as one person said "this game is scary because this story can happen in real life" and... those stories do happen and that is whats really fucking terrifying
I think the warning sign level is a Curly moment but not a hallucination. It's a visualization of him actively ignoring the red flags that Jimmy gives off. My headcanon is everytime you play as Curly we are actually seeing his recollection of events while he lays in bed post crash. Like he's retracing his steps of how he ended up in this predicament.
"Play this horror game." "After playing it, I now am sure I'd rather have died to the monsters. I lived as one." No but really, this is an incredible twist on "you were the real horror all along."
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for making this. I've watched like a dozen analysis videos and I still enjoy hearing each person's perspective especially on Jimmy. Great work!
Imagine if they had done something like this with Silent Hill Downpour instead of the multiple ending scapegoat. You CAN put the viewers in the shoes of despicable, twisted individuals with almost sero redeeming traits and still make it super compelling. No need for sad backstory or freudian excuse or noble cause, just a dickwad all the way through.
I absolutely adore this game for it‘s incredible artistry, deeply complex pschological aspecst and character writing, as well as it‘s no nonesense attitude towards avoiding making this about simple morality like a lot of media does painting characters with broad brushes. I mean, my favorite part‘s gotta be the dream sequence though. And how much it reminded me of end of evangelion and shinji‘s judgement sequence as well as silent hill. Especially 1 visual wise and 2 story wise. I mean, just the sheer attention to detail is incredible. You have this cowardly narcissist of a man be totally wrecked by the concept of what he toyed with. His jokes towards Anya with the horses (a red flag that made me question his treatment of the only woman on that ship emediately cause as a woman, that is a huge red flag.) turned into a giant horse monster hunting him down despite it‘s blindness like some mocking creature made from both the cruel jokes he made as well as the sheer irony of his situation. And ofc then we also have him sending both Daisuke and Swansea to their deaths while he‘s then chased in a graveyard by Swansea like a little lamb to the slaughter. A fantastic reversal of the shining that inspired the looks of anya according to the devs. Relating back to the scene in the movie where Jonny chases his wife in a maze outside in winter time. But here it is a maze of graves relating to the many lives he took and him being in a way put in the position the inspiration of anya was in in the scene that inspired the game one. Reversing what he did to her so he‘s being hunted with no real escape to hide in like anya was back when it all went down. Then ofc we have the baby scenes. And him being haunted anf again chased by the creature he made through his selfishness and cruelty. Forcing him to face what he dismissed mentally going so far as to completely black out the fate of anya who was very much the mother to his ra*e baby there. And he, the coward couldn‘t face her. But now he has to be chased by that baby. And later on is forced to seek it out with the ultrasound being practically forced to look at what he made with his terrible behavior. And i feel like the horse image is both a relation to the company still basically being above him in rank through it all, and also again drawing back to his aweful joke. Just to be melted into a nigjtmare he‘s not allowed to look away from anymore. And then ofc finally Curly. Having to face him. Quiet and judging with his eyes always on him. Quiet and reflective of his inability to answer to him. So much so when he finally speaks, it aeems more like another stab into his soul as even there he‘s chosing to be kind. Something that further makes Jimmy the villian. And then ofc the agony he has to put him through again to make him survive. So guilt ridden he practically begs him to live on as some kind of washing away from his sins. But we all know that curly, ever so quietly confirms that such a relief is never really granted. And even his last selfish act of trying to make himself seem like a hero ends in yet another empty act. Knowing that most likely, curly will just end in a miserable way because the company so cleary doesn‘t care about any of them. Another point i found so incredibly interesting how it frames the victimization of Anya ans Curly. Kinda tying their fates together in a cruel manner. As Anya‘s fate is reversed into a physical horror that renders Curly as just as helpless and voiceless as anya felt as she tried to get the captain to help her while he didn‘t do anything at all until it was too late. And don‘t get me wrong. I don‘t think either of them deserve it. I mean i‘m a chronic pain sufferer. And curly made me so deeply sad i wanted to hug him the entire time. But i still cannot overlook the clear messaging here. As Curly is pretty much Jimmy‘s new target cause he‘s too rendered voiceless and helpless just like Anya. And ofc since abuse most often is about power, for Jimmy this is what he enjoys in his sadism. And sadly, Just like Anya, Curly is left alone in himself unable to gain much support. Just like Anya did in a ship full of men, some of them questionable to begin with where a captain doesn‘t even grasp the fear of said woman talking to him about the lack of door locks to their bedrooms. Like her safety is barely a concern. A mere afterthought if thought of at all. But still I feel like Anya probably wanted to end his suffering sooner. As she was so clearly against the whole thing of making him suffer this way. So much so she couldn‘t bare listening to him being forced into being alive again by the man she feared so much. I think she felt a sense of solidarity with Curly in that moment. Trying her best to keep him alive and also sane in there. But then again ofc most of her life there was basically survival mode. Trying to not anger her ra*ist too much so he won‘t literally end her life. I do also think she tried to get rid of the baby when she did the overdose. Or at least hoped there might be a chance for it if she makes it that it frees her from her ties to her ab*ser. But I also think that Anya in general just wanted an out. Being failed by nearly all of them. And with sadly her own suffering mostly flying under the radar due to lack of an interest in her as a person beyond what her job was on board. I could talk about this for way longer, but i‘ll cut it off here. Tldr, one of the best games I ever played, fantastic art direction, realistic character writing that is incredible, so much to chew on and theory craft with. And in general just such a meaningful story of the harsh reality of „your actions have consequences and so does your inaction.“ wich is u know, sadly a topic mentioned too rarely in our media. Cause in real life, we don‘t walk among heroes and villians. We walk among people with their own issues, with good and bad traits, with complex personal struggles and also good and bad fates. And in real life, happy endings are never a guarantee. And usually, if you blame people in your own social class for the crimes of people far above yiu and the person you are blaming, aka CEO‘s over someone like Curly for example. Or just ppl that make these decitions. Then you are doing them a favor. Because the company won in that narrative. Because Jimmy was too busy blaming his fellw working class brothers and sisters over actually adressing the people that make actual decitions he and his peers could never make. And the cruel can only triumph when their victims are too busy fighting each other instead of fighting their own opressor instead. Hence why these ppl are so adamant in having middle managers and other positions that offload the blame. Gotta make sure the ones at the bottom have little reach to you if you‘re treating them like dirt.
heres the thing, i hate jimmy for doing that to anya but for some reason i also love how well written his character is. despite being so morally inhumane, i could consider his selfishness as something humane, it was sick to think of but i also believe that all of us somehow went throught that type of selfishness. however in our cases, it couldve been as simple as getting away from breaking a glass, or idk thats not really it or idk depends on how u think, i j loved how they portrayed jimmy's character, and i somehow relate to him too EXCEPT FOR DOING ANYA LIKE THAT, with the way he takes the responsibility in order to gain the recognition he wanted but ended up giving them the worst option, or leading them in the wrong way, its like forcing urself to be someone you just couldnt be, even you could, just not in the exact manner
this was equally concise and detailed; the video editing and mic quality was perfect and i really appreciate your dedication to retelling the story accurately without need to overexplain things (ex. giving definitions of words and stuff) seriously. incredible work here thank you
What's interesting is that it seems like Curly's current fate isn't just the consequences of his own actions, but he seems to be the avatar taking on the brunt of Jimmy's consequences as well. Curly is physically abused by Jimmy, has his leg chopped off in favor of Jimmy's obsession with keeping him alive, and ultimately is the one who has to live with the long term mental and physical consequences of the whole ordeal, as Jimmy took the easy way out. It sort of feels symbolic of Curly's predicament, as Curly enabling Jimmy has allowed Jimmy to push all the blame onto Curly, and thus Curly, even after his "punishment" in the ships explosion, has to deal with even more punishment- punishment that would be meant for Jimmy.
Curly is like morally gray (not from who he is but rather his actions. Reassuring a rapist they wont go to prison is really wrong but considering they are in space and jimmy could easily do smth fucked, you should approach the situation cautiously.) Jimmy is morally gone all the way And anya, daisuke and Swansea are morally good.
Thank you! I clicked on this video, watched a bit of the first chapter and decide to pause and play the game myself and I do not regret it. It is really atmospheric and impactful. And I am enjoying your analysis of the game too :) .
I wanna make a mod that is this game, but either there is no crash, or Jimmy is the one blown up... So it's a comparitively healing and wholesome story about a group of broken people healing with each other through a shitty experience and a firing. Perhaps after, they open their own lil shipping company or something idk.
curly is a criticism of the bystander. he is a criticism of every single person who has ever looked the other way to a man hitting his wife, or not said anything when their friend makes a r4pe joke, or said "oh but hes a good guy!" when told their buddy harmed a woman. his mutilation is representative of anyas assault, he is laid bare and bloody and vulnerable and entirely helpless to whatever jimmy wants to do while he gives him the medication, which, btw, is far too low a dose to have Any affect on him at all. curly being dismembered, burned and maimed represents the emotional destruction of having been s3xually assaulted. its the closest thing he could experience to what anya has lived through and what he turned a blind eye to without having him just be assaulted by another man. and it forces him to witness just how monstrous jimmy is. he turned a blind eye and now he cant even blink.
Naw man, you do something I really respect. After releasing a really good video, you don’t keep pumping stuff out trying to get the same result. You sit back and work on your next passionate thing. Don’t worry about a schedule, just worry about uploading whatever you want to upload, whenever you want to upload. That’s what I want to see from anybody :)
As another really underrated psychological shooter game once said "It takes a strong man to deny whats right in front him, and if the truth is too much for them they create their own truth." Jimmy the coward he is couldn't accept his responsibility, so in the end he pinned it on others and created some delusion that putting Curly in the Cryo Pod would make him into some kinda hero.
One thing this game does well is making a story about an unlikable protagonist. This trope is done a lot in recent media, but many creators refuse to let the audience just hate the character so they make the worst redemption arcs. I find that this makes turn many unlikable protagonists into poorly written characters because they just go “but they’re sorry so you should forgive them”. Which is a total cop out.
I think it makes this game even more interesting is the fact there has been horror games where you play as horrible people, but the horror is based around more than being punished further actions in life or seeking some type of redemption for those actions. Jimmy isn’t that.
Kinda don’t f*ck with curly either, completely giving control over to jimmy after being told he r*ped someone. ALSO he tells curly he’ll crash the ship to avoid responsibility
So true. He did not took any action to even try to tide him up or tell the other. Or just getting rid of Jimmy. Atleast something more than just act like noting happen.
I think you let Curly off way too easy here. He overlooked Jimmy’s attack on Anya, basically just trying to keep everyone getting along despite knowing how much damage Jimmy had done. Sure, there wasn’t a lot he could do, but he could have supported Anya in a tangible way and his decision not to is part of what ultimately led to all their deaths. Curly isn’t evil the way Jimmy is, but he does represent a passivity that in real life can be very harmful, and I think the game captures this tremendously well.
I don't know if this is just a stupid theory of mine, but last i checked it doesnt show curly's and anya's IDs in the tunnel before you see polle because Curly ends up alive and Anya's death was indirect
Curly is the mouthwash. As it turns out, the colours weren’t picked randomly. Blue eyes, blue mouthwash. 99% effective, but so sweet it destroys the teeth. Also, what about that one percent… he overlooked that glaringly wrong, dead pixel, 1 percent. They have to drink the mouthwash to survive, and in the end jumbo eats part of him. This game is about sa, but seen by the predators eye. He just doesn’t care, he doesn’t even think about her, nor feel guilt. He always belittles her, sees her as a bad doctor (even tho she kept curly alive after the crash, you have to be very damm good to do that), and doesn’t feel guilt. Hell, he doesn’t even think about her.
I can't believe it, Finally My favorite character James Sundarland will stop getting hated without reasons for the first time! (Yes, there are parts of SH fans who reduce James deeds SPOILER ALERT FOR SILENT HILL 2 into a man who couldnt be intimate with his wife)

"Our worst moments don't make us monsters."
Jimmy proved that sometimes our worst moments DO make us monsters.
Outside of his worst moments, Jimmy is a loser. A jealous, whiney bitch of a loser.
Honestly I think Jimmy's best moments make him a monster, nvm his worst.
I think Jimmy still proves this quote right. He was a monster way before his worst moments.

Skipping over the laugh curly does after jimmy picks up the gun is criminal
So REAL. The best part of the game. It really shows how miserable Jimmy really was, when even Curly was laughing at him
At first I thought it was curly just being pure evil but after the flashback and learning what Jimmy truly did he had every right to laugh at him
The realization that the very thing Anya wanted to keep away from Jimmy for safety’s sake is in his hands, and all he can do it watch? So good
@@backrooms_timelineor this was the moment Curly snaps
NO FR AND HIM SKIPPING OVER (what I assume to be,) JIMMY HITTING CURLY TO MAKE HIM STOP CRYING!!! CRIMINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /silly
No, but, seriously, him skipping over these bits makes me kinda sad.
Yeah, anya came to him and tried to tell him she was uncomfortable with jimmy (possibly multiple times?) and he basically brushed her off.
it was truly poetic justice for curly the enabler
-jimmy deserved way worse, than what he got, though-
Curly~~~ itz mehhh
My only problem with the game is Curly didn't suffer more. If he was torn apart limb from limb and put back together everyday without dying that would be the perfect ending.
the mouthwash doesnt work as disinfectant bc its too high in sugar not bc daisuke's wounds r too deep, anya says the mouthwash isnt good as disinfectant but jimmy just ignored her fuck jimmy
THANK YOU! Finally someone acknowledges this.
Shows just how little he respects her
@viheart how little he respects her? He didn't even register her corpse's existence (the big gray void in the medbay)
Oh that’s why the void is there. I love this game
THIS
holy shit your so right.
Sex offenders are always persuasive. That’s why SA victims get shamed by the society despite being the ones who get hurt while the offenders often hold a high position of power.
Sexism man, it's poison
Not actually burns. The foams got stuck to his skin, which means that, when they got him out of there, they needed to basically rip out his skin
Curly sounds like toxic positivity if we are being honest.
@@PlatinumNath
That could be the case but I’ve met a person that was like Curly, being friends with those who did terrible shit and also had a thing for me years back.
Woah. Really cool. This game was freakin fantastic and horrifying

i 100% think swansea kept the cyropod for daisuke or even anya because they still had ambition and something to go home to, daisuke had his family to go back to and maybe pursue something similar to him being under swansea and anya still wanting to try for medical school and the fact that even if she wasn't a completely qualified nurse, she was damn good at it, she managed to keep Curly alive for so long in that state.
I think we wasn't sure about who should go into the cryopod, but still didn't want to create chaos letting them know there was one available. Swansea was a real one.
@WastelandH frfr, father Swansea
A fellow Eikichi Enjoyer?!
i personally believe swansea _did_ clear out the entire room, we gotta remember we play as an unreliable narrator half the time. i think it’s in his character to not want anybody to fuck up the machines when he _just_ cleared one of them
anya is legit a miracle worker. she consistently cared for curlys every need; rewrapped his bandages without infection, fed him, took care of his excretion, etc etc. surprised curly survived that long with nothing but a medkit and some painkillers. literally the only thing she couldnt do was feed him painkillers, which was a literal trauma response from JIMMY saing her
also, i noticed nobody mentions the second time Jimmy is giving the painkillers you can hear him beating Curly and Curly softly crying afterward.
Yeah, that really fucked me up. Its our first glimpse into Jimmy being a fucking maniac.

and honestly, curly too. sure, he was a b*stard and failed anya when she needed him most, but he didn't deserve *that.*
the only one who deserved suffering was jimmy, and yet he got off the most scot-free of them all.
Everyone but Jimmy deserved better
I kinda feel like that was the whole point of his character.
*"I have no mouth and I must wash"* the game
That is Curlys arch.
no yeah i understand this, as it's the primary point of his exhange with Jimmy during the psych evaluation, and is very clearly demonstrated throughout the course of the game. however, even in spite of this exhaustion, Curly's ideas of responsibility are still far more concrete than those that Jimmy has. though he definitely has his faults, like letting Jimmy get away with what he did to Anya with basically no consequences, his views of fixing things as dealing with the consequences alongside his crew are far more noble than those of Jimmy's, who merely hides behind the phrase of "i'm gonna fix this" while doing nothing to actually progress towards that goal
this is not to say that Curly is a man without faults, his leniency with Jimmy especially being probably the biggest of them. it's just that for the sake of this video, i wanted to focus more on Jimmy, as i personally find him more interesting to dissect as a character. Although in the future I would definitely like to talk about Curly at some point. The ways that him and Jimmy are different are already interesting as is, but the similarities in their narratives, as we get to see how Jinmy's own fatigue affects him compared to that of Curly's would be fun to explore
@OhHeckItsTristan I get you
@@OhHeckItsTristan This is why the game is so good.
And he suffered for it, unlike Jim
I don't think Curly could do anything at that point.
INSTEAD, he should have never brought underqualified psycho on the ship
@@faina_yevheniia Curly could've forced Jimmy to enter one of the cryopods
@@zhatraug5335 without damaging the thing? Or could even he in general?
Imo, it was the failure since day 1 of the journey. It could only fall down
@@faina_yevheniia Curly could've ordered Swansea to help him with putting Jimmy in the cryopod but Curly was turning a blind eye to his friend and enabling him instead of stopping him so sure they could've gotten him in without damaging anything.
I know there's a reason for it, but mouthwash doesn't usually contain sugar. What with sugar rotting your teeth, and mouthwash being intended to clean your teeth so they don't rot.
Bacterias feeds of sugar, actually has the exact opposite effect of a disinfectant
That must have been one crappy mouthwash company if they include sugar😂
One of the character arcs ever written
wait, actually?? i thought the teacher was the villain
I’ve never heard of this, but now, everytime I feel bad about any part of my writing, I’m gonna think about this and feel better. Thank you.
I honesty hate Jimmy but i also like the fact he was made to be so hated, its a weird mix of i like how stupid and selfish this guy is but i love how the game made it so it makes you play this man whether you like it or not
I hate Jimmy as a person, but I love Jimmy as a character. He's perfectly made to be hated.
Jimmy’s a motherfucker but I like his fit
5:25 In all honesty, that sequence seems like Curly's because of the broken ladder being broken at the top specifically, the alarms more than likely being the last thing he saw most clearly before taking the full brunt of the crash (the rising all-consuming light of the sun). Especially since despite how erratic Jimmy's hallucinations eventually become once you're in a character's head space you stay there for a bit
that's what I was thinking too, and also counting in the fact that we are playing as Curly before the sequence as well
I'd say Narcissistic is a super accurate way to describe Jimmy.
11:51 the reason the room is censored because spoilers:
Jimmy gives 0 care about Anya and sees her as a tool to use however he pleases and so his mind completely phases out about Anya on the ground dead.
Curly ran back into the cockpit to try and steer them away
I think it was Curly's dream sequence, it was him not seeing the warnings signs of Jimmy because of their friendship (we are also seeing ladders, we are seeing the spaces Jimmy hasn't climbed), with the asteroid being his punishment. We see this later flipped with Curly being on fire, now being the asteroid to Jimmy's life
True! This makes so much sense.
From "We can fix this"
To "I hope it hurts"
Or could be because of the piles upon piles of mouthwash
this mouthwash brand IS Jimmy, it promises to solve problems but instead it *only* makes things worse
@@Rfdp0 sure but the mouthwash is symbolic, everthing in this game is symbolic. the "99.9%" was emphasised in the end-game. it's not as far-fetched as you're making it out to be

@@ella-sj8bu how is him being a horsefucker possibly a better interpretation than powerful symbolism?
I havent rly seen anyone talk abt the beginning sequence, so spoilers ahead
In the beginning, when jimmy crashed the ship, anya’s id is shown. This represents jimmy knowing of all his wrong doing. When he crashed the ship, he meant to take out all of the crew members, specifically anya. The id forces jimmy to look her in the face one last time before he tries to kill everyone in the tulpar.
This is js my interpretation so sorry if i got somethings wrong, i js this it was interesting😓 #ihatejimmy
no ur right, he actually wanted to crash because of his doing to anya
I'll continue your point, since being a new captain twice, he now "babysits" Curly, thinking he is responsible
Uses a crippled friend, his only friend, to feel validated for "being" captain
Pretty sure he had to skirt around the issue becuase he knows Jimmy so being careful around him is a given (he had to know that Jimmy lashes out when feeling "caged" and dealing with the issue needed to make him feel safer to get through to him, remember how much Curly reassures him during confrontation?)
@@azbest_eater she tried to make a hint in the night scene but Curly still doesn't get it, so i don't think anya outright told him what happened
Jimmy is up there with Griffith and Erebus in my opinion.

honestly it’s just so nice to see people discussing these themes in formats that are so glaring, visceral, and experiential. i don’t want to sell people short, its not crazy rare but ill just say its comforting to see that people are consuming this media and thoroughly understanding just how fucked up situations concerning sa can get, especially when the perpetrators has power or authority and those who could hold them accountable are turning a blind eye.
it’s a heavy concept but it’s beautifully executed by this game because it doesn’t really pull any punches or baby the viewer through understanding the dynamic, it makes you wade through the circumstances and atmosphere the characters interactions have created in the shoes of one of the fr worst people you can think of, and it absolutely never spares him or provides redemption because he is so clearly and integrally incapable of taking responsibility and thus, irredeemable. the devs did a fantastic job crafting the story and i genuinely hope it serves as a fictional but nevertheless chilling representation through the roles both jimmy and curly play and dissuade people from being aggressors as well as from being apologizers. it’s no small thing to have a fuckton of people discussing the reccuring signs of prior abuse and fear from anya, and analyzing the futile “efforts” of jimmy to atone for his transgressions long after the destruction has already occurred, and generally just being grossed the fuck out by jimmy and his perspective and dialogue lines 😭

I mean, after what he did to Daisuke, I'm not surprised anymore. He just don't care about anyone other than himself.
You missed a lot of small details, like Jimmy emotionally abusing Anya, as well as him beating Curly when he gives him his medicine.
@@FighterCore17 oooh wait that's so interesting! i actually did not know about that 👀very fascinating thank you for sharing!
@@systemprogramstartup yeah!

i’m literally crying i’ve never played the game before (and i can’t because of strict parents) so watching this is the only way to get info on a fandom i want to be a part of. the things that jimmy did to each one of his innocent coworkers all from jealousy and regret just makes my heart break (my eyes burn plsssss)
Jimmy does not like Anya, that's very clear throughout the game, he's never anything but mean to her, but he gets excited at the thought of controlling someone
thats not a theory thats just literally what it is... i mean come on youre looking at fetuses in there with an ultasound what ELSE would it be
I think the phrase "Take Responsibility" is reflective of Curly as well but opposite to the way it reflects on Jimmy, with Curly taking on too much responsibility and not being able to deal with the situation because of it. Curly views the entire crews well being as his responsibility, especially after Pony Express went under as he knows that most of the crew doesn't have much to go back home too with their only certainty being the paycheck at the end of the trip, with the added implication that problems on the ship lead to pay cuts. This might be, at least partially, the reason Curly seems to do so little about Jimmy as any real confrontation will likely lead to the crew being worse off once the trip is over
Im sorry you had to talk about J*mmy
The whole way through the game, as it became increasingly obvious how awful Jimmy is, I was just thinking to myself "wow, I wish he would die. like, kill yourself and let everyone else have peace dude." AND THEN HE DID!!!!!! I felt so vindicated but also annoyed that he did it thinking himself the hero.
as one person said "this game is scary because this story can happen in real life"
and... those stories do happen and that is whats really fucking terrifying
Holy peak, I was waiting for someone to talk about this game
There’s a bunch of videos already!! Give them a watch! :D
A lot of the time i wonder if I am a bad person, or even a narcissist. Analyzing Jimmy has made me realize I am way too hard on myself.
"Play this horror game."
"After playing it, I now am sure I'd rather have died to the monsters. I lived as one."
No but really, this is an incredible twist on "you were the real horror all along."

In the ID hallway scene, it was nice to see that you could see everyone’s face on their cards except for Anya.
Dawg, I’m so glad I actually listened to your recommendation of watching a playthrough first. This game is so fire
heres the thing, i hate jimmy for doing that to anya but for some reason i also love how well written his character is. despite being so morally inhumane, i could consider his selfishness as something humane, it was sick to think of but i also believe that all of us somehow went throught that type of selfishness. however in our cases, it couldve been as simple as getting away from breaking a glass, or idk thats not really it or idk depends on how u think, i j loved how they portrayed jimmy's character, and i somehow relate to him too EXCEPT FOR DOING ANYA LIKE THAT, with the way he takes the responsibility in order to gain the recognition he wanted but ended up giving them the worst option, or leading them in the wrong way, its like forcing urself to be someone you just couldnt be, even you could, just not in the exact manner
The whole game is sort of like a modern greek tradgedy that warns of the consequences of negligence and avoiding responsibility.
I love that we as a fandom absolutely HATE Jimbalaya-
this was equally concise and detailed; the video editing and mic quality was perfect and i really appreciate your dedication to retelling the story accurately without need to overexplain things (ex. giving definitions of words and stuff) seriously. incredible work here thank you
swansae having insane dance moves is a game highlight, most definitely
Reassuring a rapist they wont go to prison is really wrong but considering they are in space and jimmy could easily do smth fucked, you should approach the situation cautiously.)
Jimmy is morally gone all the way
And anya, daisuke and Swansea are morally good.
Mine companions and I doth harbor ill will toward Jimmy.
Man, I genuinely like this guy😂 subscribed, can’t wait to see you get big
Yo! I love spoilers directly in the thumbnail! Awesome!
Do you feel like a hero yet?
you shouldve added "jimmy" to the content warning
Im so sorry you had to talk about jimmy, my condolences go out to you
One thing this game does well is making a story about an unlikable protagonist.
In hindsight, her talking about the locks on the crew quarters hits really hard when the context is revealed
Jimmy is the psychological game version of Captain Walker from Spec Ops
I don’t know if Curly was INNOCENT, but he wasn’t the one who crashed the ship at least
i always respect a tristan when his name is spelled right, rock on brother
(Yes, there are parts of SH fans who reduce James deeds
SPOILER ALERT FOR SILENT HILL 2
