It's like play by play analysis is constantly trumped by stats that don't matter to the play! The entire game you have to listen to these guys go on on about how the canes win 79% of the time when getting four power plays during a full moon when Deangelo wears his batman undies inside out. The only stat i wanna hear about mid game is that the rangers win 100% of the games where they score more goals than the other team. Wildly frustrating.
ESPN always has the worst crew, they genuinely don't care anymore. Mark Jackson is the same on the NBA side every year. What makes it even worse is that ESPN used to be the best sports network.

@@caniacrl Inability to counter superior special teams and goaltending are exactly why teams get bounced in the playoffs. Both teams can defend 5v5 and both are good off the rush. You really can't say 'if only' when that is specifically the reason why you're losing.

Also, seemingly like you Hawkey, it's been amazing to me for people to call Laff a bust SO EARLY when he's only 22! I get that he came ~immediately into the league and that he was a first overall pick, but sheesh I feel like people overlooked his age and typical development patterns.
I agree. We expect these kids (19,20,21..) to come right in and takeover. They are up against men who have the strength and experience. Give them time, patience and coach them. They are an investment.

The cross check on Skjei would not have been a penalty 25 years ago, but the game's changed, Dave Jackson said that they started calling thos because cross checking was out of control years ago

I bleed Ranger blue but that cross checking penalty in the 2nd OT against Carolina was a bad call. I hate seeing that, regardless of who it’s against. This is the playoffs, it has to flagrant. That was a joke and the Rangers got the win. That’s great, but to honest the officiating has been subpar. That call against Rempe in game one for Goalie interference, when he was clearly pushed, is just the first example.

You have to call that penalty even though it was in double OT because if you don't then it's a possible breakaway the other way. I'd have a bigger problem if it wasn't called or if it happened where it wasn't going to lead to a breakaway or scoring chance

Trouba hits by putting his forearm on your core before running through you. Size difference, the speed of the game, and guys ducking and flinching leads to that extension that is simply forward, not up, being at head height sometimes.

This series is definitely gonna come down to special team, specifically can the canes shut down the rangers power play and capitalize on their own. So far the rangers are 4 for 9 on the power play (going 2 for 2 in game 1) and the canes are 0 for 10 on the power play (0 for 5 in each game). The canes only change so far is benching Anderson which makes me believe the canes are thinking “hey last year the rangers were up 2-0 but then they choked against a backup so why don’t we do that?” But to the rangers their mindset is now probably “they’re doubting themselves now by benching their starter, let’s get in their heads early and shut them down.” Rangers in 6 at most
On the Trouba attempt of a hit... Trouba went for a body check. Carolina guy said nope and ducked. Trouba's skates hits the Carolina player stopping his lower body's momentum, but his upper body momentum continues causing him to fly headfirst in to the boards.
And it was beautiful. I hope he feels it for the rest of the playoffs.

I thought that the officiating of this game was not good. Many blown calls by the refs both ways and there were a few calls before this going Carolina's way. I feel the refs had to call something at some point and it just looked soft because it was but it made up for many of the bad calls throughout.
1:41 that's not "finishing a check" trouba was going elbow first all day long. That was the initial attempt. Necas ducked and if he didn't, he'd be out for the season

Trouba does not try to elbow ppl intentionally. The guy has perfected perfect form for mac truck hits & anyone that says otherwise is clueless or legit biased. What UA-camrs and most casuals say is a "chicken wing" Its just the way everyone loads up bout to make a big hit. The elbow being down and tucked while moving on skates amd preparing for a heavy collision you want to get the better of, when you miss or they duck like that, the only natural way for that energy you were loading up to release is in the arm raising from there not being a body in front of it to absorb the impact which would obv keep the arm/elbow from raising. Its just simply a result of the follow thru on a missed hit. When u look at videos of legit elbows and intentional chicken wings it's so clearly different its night & day.

How dumb do you have to be to take a cross-checking penalty? These guys are supposed to be professionals and they don't even know that cross-checking is against the rules. If you hold the stick with both of your hands and you shove the stick against an opponent with force, that's cross-checking. You don't do that by accident.

Bottom line: Carolina will not win this series, Anderson is not the goalie that Shersterkin is..that is the difference bottom line, period! Carolina can't allow more than 1 goal a game if they want a chance.
The thing with the Trouba hit is that his arm pops out regardless of if he hits him in the face or goes through the body. He has a reputation and his haters will think he’s trying to headshot necas, but it’s normal hockey hit fundamentals. You protect yourself by using the arm to stabilize yourself after contact and that’s why it comes out like that even though he’s missed the hit, just instincts at that point.

Sure it was. The refs didn't make the decision for the Canes to go 0/5 on the powerplay, including 0/2 in OT. The refs didn't decide that Igor would make 54 saves. Refs didn't decide Canes would blatantly trip Rangers 3 times in the 3rd which led to a Kreider game tying goal
The game went into double overtime and you want to try to boil the outcome down to one thing so you can cry about it. That's pathetic.

I just don't see Carolina winning a Cup. They always "play well." But they don't quite get over the hump.
For one, I don't have faith in Anderson. The other team's goalie always seems to be better, no matter who it is. And I'm not sure the offense-by-committee works in the playoffs. They still don't have that one guy who's going to carry them through a series or two.
Despite them being knocked out Eichel is the X-factor for vegas. Teams need an X-factor.
