Mom Gets Death Threats for Method of Teaching Kids to Float

- A mom who posted a video of her child's controversial swim lesson says she's now getting death threats. In the video, the instructor tosses an 8-month-old baby into the pool. A few seconds later, he surfaces, using his instincts to stay afloat. The boy's 3-year-old brother is also thrown into the pool before popping up. Onlookers cheer but social media is aghast. Krysta Meyer said she posted the videos to show how her sons were learning how to float in case they ever fall into a pool. #InsideEdition

The person throwing them is an instructor. It’s to make sure they survive if something happens.

jaxon Because babies have a natural instinct to swim, they’ve been in a womb that is filled with bodily fluids like water and they learn how to move their arms and legs inside the womb, essentially babies learn how to swim at a very very young age.
jaxon Everyone uses muscle memory. But beside that, kids (and adults) will use even the faintest memory of an ability to be able to survive in a life or death situation. Its simply instinct
Technically everyone knows how to swim but if you keep practicing as a baby and toddler you’ll be a good swimmer
Yeah children under the age of 2 have a natural instinct to swim. After that age it disappears, so it's good to start young.
Exactly. I believe falling into a pool and drowning is the 1st or 2nd most common cause of death in babies and young children.
I was taught how to swim when i was a child but i was never thrown in the pool or tossed
this is how i was taught to swim and i turned out fine even after the lead poisoning at age 6 (paint chips thinking it was candy since lead is sweet)

The people here defending the abusive mother as just as sick as she is. The infant could inhale a lot of water in those few seconds and that could lead to 'dry land drowning' later where the water will linger in the lungs. Furthermore, it could be an extremely traumatic experience for the child and cause them to fear water later on. They should be introduced to the water in a safe, gradual and fun way and be challenged more and more as they get more confident. A child should never be crying or feeling like their life is in danger. Even as an adult, if someone did this to me, I'd find it overwhelming so just imagine how it must feel for a baby?

This is survival swimming. The instructors teach the kids how to float, even with clothes on. They learn this so if they fall in the water they will be able to float and swim to they edge of the pool. This is completely safe and they will not let the kids drown ofc. They will flip them, dunk them, and splash water in their face. This replicates what could happen in an emergency.
Flip them, dunk them, drop them into a body of water head first, throw water into their face . So... not traumatizing at all. lol
@@candacesmith6058 liberal lol
@@candacesmith6058 this is how we taught all three of my younger cousins to swim. They loved it, love swimming, never had any issues.
Now some kids, yea, they might not like the water. They might be more finicky about water in their face or whatever, but for the most part, it's made into a fun experience that the kid can enjoy, while learning to survive.
If you never let anything happen to a child bc it might be traumatizing, they'll grow up in a bubble and have no clue how the world works, how to deal with scary or different situations or how to survive in an emergency. Exposing children to tiny amounts of "scary" or "dangerous" activities, while under complete supervision and having protocol to follow to keep everyone safe.. thats really the best way to prepare a child for life.
Edited to add: they're not dumping them in water face first. They dunk their faces while holding them so they learn to blow bubbles and not inhale the water, yes. They don't just drop them into water face first.

Something similar happened to me at that age too, i was with my older cousins (8 and 5) in a resort pool playing with one of those inflatable animals, the older one somehow flipped it with me on it and i didn't know what was happening until my dad pulled me out like 10 seconds later.
I almost drowned when I was 8.
@@NoobsDudes lol, good thing you didn't, right?

Kids fall in and drown bc parents don’t do this with their kids, I live in FL and this is normal
I live in Miami and drowned in the pool. I was seconds away from passing out and probably dying. This moms doing good.
Exactly, I'm in Florida too and this state is all about water, whether its beaches or pools and lot of children drown unfortunately.
Yeah, I’m from Fl and I had to learn the hard way when I was younger. Glad I was put into swimming classes and am now able to swim.
Kenna Tagg thank you I’m in FL too and I learned how to swim when I was 5 it’s common sense for a percent to do this so your child is not in distress whilst swimming. Our backyard has an in ground pool, my sister learned how to fully swim at the age of 4.
My parents never did this to me, but it is normal here as well. I learned through lessons, but my backfloat is still terrible
I knew someone who got severe brain damage from drowning every child should learn basic floating and swimming
A lot of people forget that this isn't training on how to swim, it's training on how to resurface if you ever fall into the pool. While mom and dad can be nearby watching, their child can still inhale a ton of water before they can get to them and find themselves drowning in seconds. This teaches them to be able to do that first bit of survival before their rescue comes
You just explained why this method is stupid... 4 seconds underwater is plenty of time to inhale water and drown a baby. It's fine to teach kids to swim at a young age, but there's much better ways to do it. I was taught at a young age too, with a SAFE method of swimming, and I'm a great swimmer to this day... without my life being risked.
@@GeoRust1 At least you have a functioning brain. I mean why not wait a little while when they grow a little older.
@@GeoRust1 how will the baby drown if the instructor is RIGHT THERE. It doesn’t matter if you learned differently. Manly learned this way and still became great swimmers.
@@sarahalviz979 Do you know how drowning works? Water enters the lungs. 4 seconds is PLENTY of time for water to enter the lungs of a baby who doesn't know better but to breathe in the water. It doesn't matter if the instructor is there, if the baby inhales enough water into their lungs they can 100% die from it. Please use your brain bro 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂
Literally, the same thing happened like 3 years ago I think.

Honestly I think it’s great. As long as that’s not the only swimming classes they receive. If a child actually falls in, they will know what to do
Think about it in history they did the same thing swimming instructor need to read his history. What if and if is a big word. That baby falls in and does not know what to do. This woman is teaching her kids an invaluable lesson. You can never be to young to be taught how to survive. Just imagine you're a parent to a lost child from drowning. She was right there the whole time. Relax!
I was never taught how to swim or anything. Swimming/drowning awareness is not a thing in my culture. Despite that, I swam just fine, I don't see how people can have problems doing the most basic of tasks lmao 😭😭

How would you go about it? Just asking for lreaning purposes
@@juliogarcia3549 honestly I wouldn’t take this approach but I don’t judge those who do. I would be in the pool with the child and either have someone else put them in the water or I would let the child go but have my arms right there to intervene if needed. Dropping them in alone seems too scary for me to do to the kids.

@@juliogarcia3549 If the child got water in its lungs, it would be choking/coughing. Is the child doing either of that? No.
I love how the parent teach their child to swim.. I can't even float without panicking
That's the thing... Don't panic! You lose all control when you feel OUT of control. You just have to remind yourself, "you're in control."
Floating is easy.
I mean, when you don't relax you kinda lose control...
Teaching child is different than throwing them in the water. I was kind of afraid to float cause i was 12 years old when i learned it because there was no pool where i lived. But teaching a kid how to float is easy i have taught adults how to float even when they were afraid the technique they used is wrong but it's too much to send death threats🥴
Then get in the water and *learn.* I don't see what the problem is. Get in shallow water, where you know there's absolutely no way you could possibly drown, and learn to swim and float.
Do yu want me to throw you into a pool?
The same people that say how horrible it is to throw a kid into the water more than likely see that it’s perfectly fine to give a kid a sex change.

When I was learning to swim it was pretty much fighting for my life.
