I remember my first jump, it sucked donkey dicks. When I arrived at Benning the day before Jump School was to start, I found they hadn’t sent my medical records, so I had to get an Airborne physical and wait two weeks for the next class to start. During tower week in that class, I hurt my leg and was profiled for two weeks. I was recycled back into Alpha company, same squad, same platoon, a “G” was put next to my roster number, and the cadre called me “Private Airborne.” Our jump week was nearly washed out, it rained the first 3 days, meaning we had to get in 5 jumps on Thursday and Friday. On my first jump, my platoon sergeant, Staff Sergeant Marshall (with whom I had shared Thanksgiving dinner 3 weeks before), saw me and yelled “Private Airborne, do you want to stand in the door?” I yelled back “Not clear Sergeant Airborne!” He gave me a toothy grin and said “Get yo ass up here!” The LT who was in line to stand in the door (Borjas was his name) stepped back, and I hooked up in his place. I kept my eyes open, and performed a more or less okay jump. But that first one was the only one I ever did without puking on the plane, or on the ground as soon as I got up from my PLF. We got our wings pinned on in the field on after our final jump, there was no graduation ceremony, no diplomas, just a quick bus ride back as people had flights to catch. The next morning I and a few others formed up on the cables to be picked up by RIP.
@@johnroscoe2406 Actually, there were combat jumps in both Grenada (Operation Urgent Fury) in 1983 and in Panama (Operation Just Cause) in December 1989. I believe both operations had jumps at minimum height (500ft), (at least by the Rangers, maybe not the 82nd, I dunno) which meant they left their reserve chutes at home (either the main opens fine, or you splat!!). I have heard some crazy stories of the Delta raid on Carcel Modelo prison in Panama, to free American Kurt Muse.
My Grandfather was in the NZ Army in Crete when the first large scale German Paratrooper attack was used in WW2. The Germans lost 150 planes and thousands of men yet still managed to win the battle. It must have been brutal.
I joined the RAF Air Training Corp aged about 13 back in 1967 because I wanted to be a paratrooper. Living in Berkshire, if you put your ATC uniform on, walked down to the main road, put your thumb out would soon get a lift, especially to RAF Brize Norton and RAF Benson. Once there, you could go to one of the Squadrons and get a flight to somewhere. I did it often and flew in quite a few RAF transport planes and on one flight, which was an Argosy, during the flight the back door was dropped and I was sat (strapped in) quite close to it. I literally peed my pants, as I was absolutely petrified at the noise, the wind, the coldness of the air and even though not being to see vertically down what I could see was mind-blowing. Suffice to say, after that experience I realize I could never be a paratrooper and since that time, I have had such respect for anyone who choose to jump out of a plane with just a parachute to save their life. But four years later I did join the RAF but as an Aerial Photographic Operator where I spent most of my time, underground in highly secure intelligence centers processing and printing B&W photographs to be made into large maps of places in Russia.

There's really no limit as to how big a plane you can get in the air - the wings generate lift proportionate to their size. Also, this plane is rather modest by modern standards.
He who controls the database, controls the universe!!! (Echoing on universe.) I've seen Alphabet (UA-cam's parent company) change many things, including time stamps and views.)
Wow, it's changed so much in some ways, and that's the number exiting at once on top of each other. The pay load each one carries is huge now, as well as the size and shape of the canopy is better today. What has NOT changed is the courage and heart to do this time after time for the little money you get added. We all did it because we loved being different and the best. PLUS, I hoped it would help to pick up girls.....which it didn't. No girls ever around. Never ever saw a girl in jump school or for the next couple of years really.
@@Noutelus True. I've got small balls but I've done a few jumps this way from C-130 and C160 airplanes. Besides, you don't need any: if you slow down or block the line, they'll just kick you out. :D
They do,...you spend a day practicing your exit from an airplane on a mockup on the ground, then spend a day practicing your landing by jumping off a platform and swinging thru the air untill they randomly dump you to the ground, then the jump towers where they pull you into the air and release you.....nothing really ever prepares you for when that door opens and you look down though.

Met a friend's uncle who kept a museum of sorts at his suburban Chicago.home in an oversized outbuilding on his property. All of the stuff he had was from his service in WW2. Turns out he made 2 combat drops with the 82nd, Normandy and Market Garden. Finished the war without a scratch, after fighting the rest of the way into Germany. Wonderful, gripping, exciting stories he shared with me. He held regular tours for youth groups and other civic organizations and attended reunions all the time. He told me that sharing with people what he went through allowed him to process the hideous sights he beheld. I'll never forget him.
@@skydiver1013 LOL. I asked a friend who was an Air Forced Reservist who did a lot of logistical missions, about his parachute and he laughed - “What parachute?”

He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright. He checked off his equipment and made sure his pack was tight. He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar. You ain't gonna jump no more. Chorus: Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die. Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die. Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die. He ain't gonna jump no more. "Is everybody happy?" cried the sergeant looking up. Our hero feebly answered, "Yes", and then they stood him up. He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked. And he ain't gonna jump no more. He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock. He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop. The silk from his reserve spilled out and wrapped around his legs. And he ain't gonna jump no more. The risers swung around his neck, connectors cracked his dome. Suspension lines were tied in knots around his skinny bones. The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground. And he ain't gonna jump no more. The days he lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind. He thought about the girl back home, the one he left behind. He thought about the medicos and wondered what they'd find. And he ain't gonna jump no more. The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild. The medics jumped and screamed with glee, rolled up their sleeves and smiled. For it had been a week or more since last a 'chute had failed. And he ain't gonna jump no more. He hit the ground, the sound was "Splat," his blood went spurting high. His comrades they were heard to say, "A helluva way to die." He lay there rolling 'round in the welter of his gore. And he ain't gonna jump no more. There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the 'chute. Intestines were a-dangling from his paratrooper suit. He was a mess, they picked him up and poured him from his boots. And he ain't gonna jump no more.

My late father bailed out of a shot-up B-24 in 1944 and spent nine months as a prisoner of war. A buddy of mine put it well: “They accomplished more by the time they were 25 than we will in our entire lives.”
Maybe they will need them once they are on land. Plus, maybe it's for once they hit the ground, dirt, mud, stone, pretty much anything can hit their eyes.
The82nd and 101st have been jumping out of perfectly good airplanes for a very long time, and I'm sure front line COs have have tight grasp on the pros and cons of goggles. Personally, I'd trade the inevitable storage space in my pack for a few more rounds of ammunition and a few more ounces of water.
To make it all come out that precise is just a testament to the discipline all the way thru: The discipline enacted by those that made the chutes, the cords, the material, etc; to the discipline needed in making sure each chute is packed correctly; in making aircraft; in training the pilots; and of course the discipline of the soldiers jumping out. They must have all gone thru training, on the ground, in the planes well before executing this maneuver. Well done.
I feel so much respect for these people, and seriously, I think war shouldn't exist. In fact, the human race will not become advanced enough untill war is erradicated, and we could even go extinct within one or two more world wars. But well, that's something the ones up the pyramid will have to consider
question should be, why must we train man and women to become soldiers because of what our histories did .. whose fault was it when they can’t agree on the same thing ? not us .. we live the day because of what some people can’t agree on one thing .
@@petermillist3779 I'm sure they do, but they'd be wrong! Sure, the British once had the world's most powerful navy. And the Roman legionaires were, well, legendary soldiers. Not that my military service could be compared to jumping out of a C-17 Globemaster, but I love how you can see how they fight the nerves like we all would before the jump and they do their job. And after touching ground and your adrenaline is at 100%, it is all quiet and you still just got to do your job clipping off shute and getting gear ready. Nobody telling you you did a good job. It was only a way to get you down there to start actually doing what you were trained for. You feel lonely and so accomplished at the same time.

So amazing a plane that big can get in the air!!
There's really no limit as to how big a plane you can get in the air - the wings generate lift proportionate to their size. Also, this plane is rather modest by modern standards.
If you think that is big, then check out the photos of USS Akron (ZRS-4), the US Navy Flying Aircraft Carrier back in 1930s

Wow, it's changed so much in some ways, and that's the number exiting at once on top of each other. What has NOT changed is the courage and heart to do this time after time for the little money you get added. We all did it because we loved being different and the best.

Yes?
That's it ). It look's like that jumping with parasuits is the most unliked training of this guys.
He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright.
He checked off his equipment and made sure his pack was tight.
He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar.
You ain't gonna jump no more.
Chorus:
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
Gory, gory, what a hell of way to die.
His comrades they were heard to say, "A helluva way to die."
He lay there rolling 'round in the welter of his gore.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the 'chute.
Intestines were a-dangling from his paratrooper suit.
He was a mess, they picked him up and poured him from his boots.
And he ain't gonna jump no more.
did you just made that up ?

To make it all come out that precise is just a testament to the discipline all the way thru: The discipline enacted by those that made the chutes, the cords, the material, etc; to the discipline needed in making sure each chute is packed correctly; in making aircraft; in training the pilots; and of course the discipline of the soldiers jumping out. They must have all gone thru training, on the ground, in the planes well before executing this maneuver. Well done.
