Great video as always. Your buddy Tony cannot even comprehend someone using a Leica. But then I guess he has bigger problems with him slandering Steve McCurry in his UA-cam video with his made up facts that he always seems to do with all his so called documentaries.
I have a Q, brilliant camera. I’ve had everything from film to digital, all the best brands. I can say for an all round high quality output camera it’s in a class of its own. I now have to save up the upgrade price. Thank you for the review, very clear.
Please be realistic about the weather sealing. This is a very nice and very expensive camera so it's important to be precise about this. This camera has an IP52 weather sealing rating. That is a very low water resistance rating. It would have to have a IP54 rating to be splash resistant. Here is the description for IP52 water resistance: "Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position."
Thanks for a comprehensive and articulate review - tells you all you need to know and conveys a really strong sense of the character of each of the cameras - was really interested in your comments and approach to high ISO noise
I really loved your statement at 11:57. Matt, I would ask 3 questions: 1. How do you feel after a year 2. How would you place that for someone with an M10/M240? Does it complement them? Is it obsolete in that case? 3. How did you find the EVF versus the "real world"? I found that the EVF on mirrorless cameras, Is always .00000001 milliseconds behind, So you never catch the real "decisive moment", Not to mention your comment on the shutter lag.
Guess I am in the group who "get it, appreciate it, like it but its just not in my realm due to the cost." This was a fantastic review/compare of the new camera. Looking at your travels I am not sure if I should feel sorry or happy for you. Sorry because you are away from home often but on the other hand, it is being away to exotic places, doing photography! You do seems to enjoy your work. I would like to do one of your NYC light workshop. Thanks for the reviews.
Thanks for this review Matt. I have had the first version for a few years and love it as a smaller, easily packable alternative to my M gear. (I bought it for motorcycle touring. It easily fits in a tank bag.) The new version does look like a significant update. Now, I just have to ponder....
Hello Matt! I have a Q 2 since June and used it a few times. When it comes to Streetphotography or Portraiture I frankly have Problems with the Autofocus, especially with a wide open Aperture. First I tried "Face Detection", which didn't work consistently and in worst Case the Camera operates in "Multifield-Focussing". 1-Field-Metering didn't make the Job either, so I work in most of the Cases with Spot-Focus. What am I doing wrong or have to consider? Thank you for your answer in advance and Best Regards!
12:00 I'm one of those who gets it, but can't afford it. I'd love to see a Q2 equivalent from Canon or Nikon. Not being made in Germany alone would allow for a lower price. I mean equivalent in form factor (simple and traditional controls) as well as in other specs. I believe the new Ziess coming out will be the closest equivalent to the Q2.
I've always used whatever was the current M with a 35 summicron as my only lens. But I'm finding it increasingly expensive to keep upgrading. When the Q first came out, I loved the weight, price, and even the AF because it was very quick. But I was not pleased with the EVF and resolution at the 35mm crop. Now that the Q2 has arrived offering an improvement on the EVF and sensor resolution, would you say the file size of the 35mm crop offers more workable information for a high quality print at A3 or bigger? Has it come closer to the M10 file?
Great video - thanks for putting it together! As a current Q user, I use the ISO button on the back frequently. How is ISO adjusted now without getting into the menus? Cheers.
I love the doubling at the beginning haha. That $5,000 price point is ridiculous, but at 6:30 your justification for it makes a lot of sense. The only people I've ever seen walk around with a fixed Leica camera are those Union DP types that are looking for a very particular brand of lens. Wish I could say I was in the market for something like this! But for $5,000 I'd want to buy something that had the potential to make it's money back and not be limited to the focal length. Great review!
Hi Matt, Stumbled upon your video while researching for Leica Q-2. Thanks for the review. I’ve been a Sony A6000 user and loves to travel with a handy camera for landscape, architecture and portrait shots; also some low light shots (ex: cityscapes at night). I wanted to buy a new camera and looking at Leica as an option. Would you recommend me to buy the new Leica Q-2 or just for the older version Leica Q? I don’t really care about the higher resolution as 24MP is okay for me. I just wanted to have a camera that I can easily bring wherever I go and won’t worry much about lenses. Would really love to hear your thoughts on this dilemma. Thank you!
Speaking to the shutter lag, I have a D5, and one of the first things I noticed actually shooting (not ergonomics, specs, etc.) was that I swear the camera thought faster than I ever thought possible. I'm mainly a photojournalist, and that split second almost hip shot, with less than a 2ms lag the D5 instantly proved it's medal as to why it's the journalist camera of choice. Being that journalism and street photography are pretty much one in the same, I can see this being a street photogs dream.
I too have a D5, but as I get older I find it increasingly difficult to lift and keep steady. The Q gives me very similar low light performance and full-frame quality, but in a light, easy to handle package that is much easier on my arms and wrists. The maximum usable ISO on the Q is about 12,500, while the D5 is about 50,000 - but since I use the high speed Leica fixed lens on the Q, real world light sensitivity is similar to the D5 with the 24--70 f/2.8 lens. David Farkas of Leica Store Miami thinks the low light ability is about a stop better on the Q2 versus the Q, so that alone would make a great upgrade for me.
@@DavidHDennis It does sound like a nice camera for sure, and yeah lugging around my 50+ lb.. camera bag is getting a little daunting now that I just turned 40
@ David Anderegg : I used to have a Sony A7RIII. I sold it after only few month, just because it was not reliable and to complicated to use. I had several Leica (M6, R7, R8, M240) and never had any issues with them : easy to use and a reliable.
Nice review Matt.. What are your views on the in-built crop feature, is this a viable alternative to owning separate 28, 35 and 50mm lenses? Sounds as though the 75 is a bit of a stretch.. Also, in this mode, is the viewfinder filled with the cropped image or is it the 28mm view with crop marks like-a what I've seen on the rear screen.. Cheers.
Really informative review, thanks!. Awaiting my Q2 delivery in Stockholm. Started out with the M9. Shot both street & Formula 1 with it. As much as I love the M and for many reasons, I know the Q system has a lot to offer. Again, really nice comparison review. Thanks!
Just bought one today (first time leica user). Having an A7rII and GFX, I am really impressed by the speed of this camera for 47MP. Even faster than when I tried the S1R. Exciting times.
@@2-da3333 well weather sealing, better screens, lockable diopter, battery battery containment, got rid of annoying on S C button and more resolution. It's the same but better.
You already made up your mind about it Paul, all I can say congrats it’s a really good camera. My point is; Q1 owners don’t have a real reason to upgrade, except of course for GAS 😉
Could be same base sensor as the s1r, but I have no inside info on that. IF it is, it would be engineered differently, due to the fixed lens optimization.
I totally agree. It would be interesting to see some file comparisons between these two. The fixed lens system I think is also a great way to be consistent and has some major advantages. I’ve only used it once but it was quite impressive. The Leica lens, although great lenses, make it out of reach for so many photographers.
This Q2 is stunning! A definite buy - despite the price. But, hey - there’s no lenses to buy! I love that. There’s plenty of megapixels to cope with the digital crop/zoom. May be 7 MP is a bit dicey, but as he says, you can at least get the shot. I like the idea of this camera and also it has a dedicated macro. I love macros and there’s no lenses to buy.. I’ve said that... I will save my $ and add it to my collection!
Only ever got to have a short play with the original Q but this looks like a significant upgrade and i am very jealous of anyone who gets their hands on one hahaha
The camera is too much of a niche for me but I'm definitely a fan. As luxury consumer product with history and a design ethos, as opposed to just a functional creative tool, it gives Leica cameras genuine soul and personality which is missing in 99.9% of products nowadays. I find that charm really attractive. If the outgoing Q is discounted I'd consider picking one up... Still expensive for what would be a novelty camera though!
Looks like the Q2 suffers from the same high-ISO issues as other current generation high megapixel sensors (eg. A7RIII vs A7III), which show more noise than their lower megapixel counterparts. Not to say the performance isn't good, but comparatively the Q might still be the better choice for someone who prioritizes low-light photography over higher resolution. Thanks, best review out there so far!
@moo It was called to be one of the best ones by dpreview and dxomark. And of course if you use zoom, the noise is less noticable than on the crop. But it still exists...
@@samatkinsphotography I'm interesting in some opinions on the place for both Q and M instead of "either or". what was/is experience/thought process on getting both in your case?

If you like using manual focus, I guarantee you'll love manual focus on the Q. It's that good, and I'm sure the Q2 is the same or better.
@@DavidHDennis Thanks. I used to have an M9, but I sold it, because I became paranoid about the sensor corrosion. I had Leitz replace my sensor for free when it happened, but I heard rumours that a second replacement would not be free. So I sold the camera while it was still perfect. As you can imagine, I was at home really with telemeter focusing. It delivered perfect focus. For work, I shoot with Sony cameras, and focus peaking there is not reliable, just not good enough for manual focusing. I'd like to know if focus peaking is reliable in the Q2.
@@oriomenoni7651 Definitely an interesting question. I read one review that said Q2 focus peaking was not reliable, but it was so poorly written I'm not sure if I trust the author. My Q has always been perfect with the focus peaking, at least as far as I can tell, and I've used it for tens of thousands of manually focused pictures. Well, when I get one I'll let you know. Unfortunately that won't be until mid April because I'm out of the US until then, and any electronics here in Costa Rica are outrageously expensive.
I have tried to get an answer on this, why not doing it again. Small cameras like Canon g7x IZi snd Panasonic LC100II have a weak sound source. No mic input and usb, hdmi, bluetooth. I want to edit videos without synchronizing image and sound. It’s been bugging me for some time and I don’t want to get stitched :)
Unfortunately, your choices are 1) record separately and sync in post or 2) have crappy audio. Unless you get a high-end camera there really isn't anything in between. 😕
Draw as many lines as you can “resolve” on a 24 MP sensor. Now do the same on a 48 MP sensor. You will not be able to “resolve” twice the lines. You will be able to resolve about 1.5 times as many. It is simple math.
But your sensor is on two axis. It has a length and a width. An image is a two dimensional thing. To double resolution you would have to double both the length and the width. Imagine the exercise I laid out above but draw those lines at a 45 degree angle. The number of MP is a direct result of multiplication of the length and the width. I am sorry but maybe it is not simple math after all. I guess it is simple geometry.
This seems much cheaper than an M SX28 but Leica will stop repairing/replacing the circuit boards of Q or Q2 after 20 years. M lenses on the other hand will last much longer.
You're out in the rain coz the Q2 offers weather resistance, but does that automatically mean the Q1 has it too? weather resistance thru firmware upgrade? lol
It may be considered the top camera in its class, but the class is very, very small. It's also selling at a very hefty price. I'd much rather getting a regular full frame mirror-less (or even DSLR), and have that extra versatility of interchangeable lenses.
William Inbody menu’s make perfect sens to me.. The RX1 has a fixed 35mm Zeiss f2.0 that is fast enough for me... In my opinion a beautiful bokeh... It has a Macro function that does the job for me i don’t shoot 1:1 .. it lacks a EVF ... and megapixels this fullframe never let me down for what i do with it... satisfied now?
I get it, I like it, and could probably even afford it but... then again using logical reasoning and common sense I would probably get a Sony a7iii or a7r iii for the money.

Great review.
This is probably the best compact camera for street photography.
What do you think?
Well, I liked the snake shoot more than the 🐈
In my opinion the Fuji X-T3 is fantastic too, not to mention the X100F one of my favorite cameras ever
where does that sensor come from ?
where did you get your strap from?
Where can I find that camera strap?
I think I want this Q2
You know you want it. Its desire.
Oh you came to Hong Kong.....welcome
I have tried to get an answer on this, why not doing it again.
Small cameras like Canon g7x IZi snd Panasonic LC100II have a weak sound source. No mic input and usb, hdmi, bluetooth. I want to edit videos without synchronizing image and sound. It’s been bugging me for some time and I don’t want to get stitched :)
Unfortunately, your choices are 1) record separately and sync in post or 2) have crappy audio. Unless you get a high-end camera there really isn't anything in between. 😕
Great Review !
You'd better be happy with the snake man's composition!😅 Awesome Review!!
Twice the MP is not double the resolution. You need 4 times the MP to double resolution.
No
Your confusing Area with side length ! Twice MP is double the resolution
Draw as many lines as you can “resolve” on a 24 MP sensor. Now do the same on a 48 MP sensor. You will not be able to “resolve” twice the lines. You will be able to resolve about 1.5 times as many. It is simple math.
John Huff simple math is that doubling two axis’ is quadrupling, not doubling. Doubling is doubling 🤣
Lei🔴a glass and ergonomi is just world class🔝
Should I sell my Q-P and get the Q2?
Do you want the sealing and extra resolution?
No.
No 2X
28mm FF lens is great length for standard.
You're out in the rain coz the Q2 offers weather resistance, but does that automatically mean the Q1 has it too? weather resistance thru firmware upgrade? lol
I didn't know which Matt to look at in the intro......
I know I keep saying it, but mate she is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
the finish on the older one is actually better IMO, from the looks of things the new one is a fingerprint magnet.
That's the limited edition Q-P which comes in the matte finish, not the Q. The Q and Q2 have the same finish.
Isn't the leica qp just released?
yep, few monthes ago...good for me i didnt buy it !
It may be considered the top camera in its class, but the class is very, very small. It's also selling at a very hefty price. I'd much rather getting a regular full frame mirror-less (or even DSLR), and have that extra versatility of interchangeable lenses.
The interesting thing to me is this is basically the same price as a Z7 and a good 28mm prime - I'd take the Leica (but I can afford neither)
True! I hadn’t thought of it that way
Sony RX1 Is the one for me!
Thats personal preference
William Inbody menu’s make perfect sens to me.. The RX1 has a fixed 35mm Zeiss f2.0 that is fast enough for me... In my opinion a beautiful bokeh... It has a Macro function that does the job for me i don’t shoot 1:1 .. it lacks a EVF ... and megapixels this fullframe never let me down for what i do with it... satisfied now?
You looked at it hard and then you decided to buy what?
You’ve convinced me to sell my kidney for this camera 👌
Will do, have a 4k monitor.
1080p now
Yup, it takes a picture....
I get it, I like it, and could probably even afford it but... then again using logical reasoning and common sense I would probably get a Sony a7iii or a7r iii for the money.
👍🏼
