    In this video I compare the Leica Q vs the Leica Q2 to find out which is a better buy in 2022. I look at the pros and cons of both cameras, what I like in real world use, and which camera I think is a better value. I also look at who these cameras are best for, and who should buy the Leica Q/Q2. Lastly, I show lots of Leica Q sample photos, Leica Q2 sample photos and video. I hope this video helps the buying decision of which camera you should buy and who these cameras are best for. Cheers

    Thanks for a great video! I do think you are underselling the crop modes though. Shooting on actual different lenses in that example you showed, the photographer moved the camera physically to get the same framing of each shot. If we do the same thing using the crop modes, moving farther away to frame the subject within the crop marks in the camera, we will get the same compression effect. Of course sacrificing a bit of sharpness due to not utilizing the entire sensor.

Ill prob never be able to justify either but Im surprised to say I prefer the colours out of the Q as well as the clearly superior low light images. You are correct about the compression between 50 and 28 BUT if you step back to re frame the head of the person you get the same compression as a 50mm because you have now changed the distance from the camera and subject.

    Confirming what others have said here. He gets the cropping argument completely wrong. The difference between, say, a 28mm and 75mm shot has to do with the change in perspective caused by changing the camera-to-subject distance to keep the subject the same size in the frame. If you don’t move and just change from a 28mm lens to a 75mm one, the result is the same as cropping.

    • @perfectly_boring

      @rickevertsz Рік тому +2

      @@terryallen9546I’m referring to what he says around @6:00. The lens doesn’t change perspective, it’s the camera-to-subject distance. So, if you crop to 75mm and move back to where you would be with a 75mm lens, the perspective will be the same as with a true 75mm lens. Hope that clarifies.

    • @darmaher4481
      @darmaher4481 Рік тому

      Not so sure it’s flawed and the simple example I have is this, shoot on a Sony with the 24f1.4 gm, I’d use crop mode to get the 35mm or what I thought was the 35, I then bought the 35mm and the difference of separation and compression makes a huge difference. The shape at a true 75mm is completely different to it cropped in on a 28. Your just cropping in in camera.

    • @der.kommentierende.komment5275
      @der.kommentierende.komment5275 3 місяці тому

      @@darmaher4481 No you are getting this wrong or mixing it with something else. A 35mm cropped to 85mm is the exact same thing as a real 85mm (the difference being the resolution) it could be that the lens you bought just has better separation and less distortion maybe that's why you think that.
      I personally have always used that crop mode with a 35mm in video because I didn't lose any resolution on the camera I was using. It was exactly like a 50mm (approximately) so I could always switch between the modes depending if I needed a zoom. But it's fine it is indeed easy to mix up but if you do some research about the technical things you'll quickly discover the truth, it's very easy to misunderstand

    Great review as usual! I was on the market for a Q, Q-P or a Q2 for months, and ended up buying both Q and Q-P almost the same time. I love the Q-P so much, I returned the beautiful Q back to B&H. Why kept Q-P in place of regular Q? The Q-P is an inconspicuous and sleek-styled update to the original Q. The removal of the front red dot in favor of a classic Leica script engraving on the top plate is the most important thing to me, and it also sports a flat matte black paint finish for an even darker appearance (it's hard to tell, you only can feel it when you have it in your hands). Additionally, the Q-P has a redesigned shutter release and On/Off switch that offers improved tactility, similar to that of M and CL-series cameras. I believe the feeling of the new power switch on the Q-P is close to that of Q2.
    I think I would love a Q2 for its better EVF. After using the outstanding EFV on my Lumix S1R, I was spoiled, cannot happy with the EVF on the Q-P. I think I eventually will pick up a used Q2 to replace my Q-P, they are currently almost the same price in the used market.

    • @DominicPhillip

      I actually love the Q-P as well, I think it's a fantastic looking camera! I think the rarity of them has made the 2nd hand market a bit overinflated (especially compared to the Q's), but I've always wanted to pick one up. They're a bit hard to find which tells me the value may increase as time goes on, but I think the Q2 will really come down in price once the Q3 hits the market soon. Thanks for watching!

    It is rather interesting to compare the selling price of a new Q2 with a new Leica 28mm Summilux interchangeable lens alone. You can add the price of a matching Leica body to the lens to make it a fair comparison.
    For a different brand, maybe the Sony A7III plus a Sigma 24mm f2.8 would be a perfect match [I own a Q2 and the Sony combination]. The Sony is the better camera technically but the Q2 is the most pleasing to use, marginally.

    i think the explanation on distortion in crop mode, and that it's the same in all crops... that part is wrong.
    distortion is also affected by the distance of the camera from the subject. so if you fill the entire 28mm frame with a subject, then move away so the same subject now fills the 75mm frame, the distortion is very different. yes, you cannot get the benefits of shallow depth of field of a long lens, but the distortion is similar to a long lens in this example. Hi DominicPhillip, I would like to blow your mind ;) , the “compression effect” at the crop mode 75mm of the q2 and the compression of an actual 75mm lens on a full frame is the same. The same is true for all the other crop modes. Take a minute and try it at home , put your q2 on a table , and another camera with a lens equivalent of the crop mode you will use on the leica . Voila same image ;) (edit: in the example you mention with the different images at different mm , the photographer was changing its distance from the subject. At lets say , 10 meters, with a q2 cropped and another camera with a 50mm lens on it , the image will be the same in terms of compression

    Yes, you do get exactly the look of a 50mm or 75mm, etc, when cropping in. You really miss the whole point. In your example, with portait and tons of focal lengths, the distance from the camera was changed with every focal length to keep the same composition! That is the whole reason for the distortion change, not the focal length. If you keep the distance the distortion will be exactly the same at every focal length, but the composition will change.
    23mm on a crop sensor looks exactly the same as 35mm on FF in terms of distortion.
    The DOF is reduced with the crop and that’s just a simple multiplication. If you’ve 2x crop you’ll have 2xDOF.

  • @Chazyfizzlez
    @Chazyfizzlez 2 роки тому +7

    Also want to point out that if you shoot a portrait at 28mm F1.7 and you crop into 50mm, it's essentially the look of 50mm F2.8. You can test this by shooting the subject with a 50mm lens at F2.8 then shoot the Q from the same distance at F1.7. Identical images.

    • @Gynra
      @Gynra 2 роки тому

      This is very true, but using the 50 mm frame lines to compose a photo means that one would move further away from the subject to make the subject fit the frame lines (assuming one wanted to fill the frames with, say, a face in both instances). That would give a different perspective. In fact, the perspective would be the same as using a 50mm lens from the same distance, though the depth of field would be that of a 28 mm lens (though the increased subject distance would have an effect). Focal length, subject distance and aperture dictate depth of field, but only subject distance determines perspective.

      They are no joke on the bank account! But they are fixed lens so it’s not just body, and for photographers the images are insane…. Still don’t know if they’re really worth the money though. Ha

    Ok, this is all nonsense. If you are going to make huge prints then yes, maybe 40 plus megapixels. But remember Most screens show a max of 2 megapixels and a 4 k screen will show no more than 4 megapixels! This all becomes very silly unless you are a dedicated industrial photographer or doing massive landsape prints
