How to Grow Lemon Trees in the UK & Cooler Climates

  • Paulo talks about why he loves growing Lemon trees so much. Growing Lemon trees in the UK and cooler climates is often thought of as an impossibility.
However with some winter protection and making use of micro climate it is really very possible. Not only is it possible to grow the lemon trees themselves but actually fruit them!
The best way to do this is to make sure your lemon tree gets as much sun as possible. It is best to grow these in a large terracotta pot and wheel them into a ploy tunnel or greenhouse to over winter.
He saw this done very successfully in public parks in Paris and at the gardens of Versailles. Paulo discusses all of the things you will need to consider and implement if you want to grow lemons in cooler climates.
From his base in the south of the UK he shows you how to sow from seed and actually transplants a whole lemon tree into a large terracotta pot. He explains what soil to use, how often to fertilise and holistically what the best situation is for growing a lemon tree.

I gave a thumbs up within 10 seconds of the cool dude" so you want to grow lemons do you?"
Then paused the video and wrote this commentary.
Now I'm going to actually listen to the info because I bought a lemon tree from a local shop
So know I want the tree to live.

Had my lemon tree in my poly tunnel border in rural Lincolnshire for nearly three years now and it’s probably the healthiest plant there. It’s actually in full flower now in late September.

Just getting my green house which is small (4ft x 6ft) ready for the winter, and looking at it, I think I have some room for a lemon tree, and hey, maybe a lime tree! This will be going on my wish list for next year! :)

Rooting cuttings is a good head start. Here in Canada I have Yuzu, Navel, Tangelo, Mandello, Meyer lemon, Calamondin orange, figs, goji berries etc. I just brought them in 8'x10' of my livingroom. Grafted a few together as well it is a great hobby. Plant may skip if roots in big pot take priority.

Bought a lemon tree 3-4 months ago, it already had flower buds. I think I made a mistake because I kept it in the living room where I don't have direct sun. It was okay for some time, the flowers opened, it grew small fruits (the largest was like 2-3 cm long). Today it lost like 30-40 leaves and even the last fruit that it had, which is strange because, usually, it only lose 1-2 leaves every other day. I moved it on the balcony, the humidity is higher here and the sun is still strong in the winter. I hope it will be better now. But I have another problem, last summer the sun was so strong and some of my succulents burnt + temperatures over 30 degrees C. Maybe the best solution is to buy some strong grow lights and keep it in the living room, maybe further away from the radiator to keep the humidity ok? I can't way to move out of this apartment and get a house where I can build a small greenhouse...
