I understand you Bart but since the rings are what's supplied, aren't you outside the rules doing that? Also, how does it go with adding things onto your boat like the wind indicator you have or telltales other people have etc etc?? Thanks for making these videos. Every time I watch I wish I was visiting there!

That brings up a good point. Always follow the rules of the class.

While I enjoy your videos and commend your efforts, I take exception to this one.
I'm quite fond of the supplied metal luff rings. They allow the luff to tack freely. I don't have problems with the topping lift line catching on them and rarely does one fall off. When they do come off they normally slide to the bottom and are not lost. Most often I'll replace the top ring with a loose tie to allow the head to swing freely. I don't believe that a toothpick is near enough extra space to allow the main luff curve to tack freely with a Mylar sail. I substitute the toothpick with a pop sickle stick to allow the luff freedom. The main luff slack is controlled with the Cunningham adjuster. While line luff ties are legal in the class I don't feel they're an advantage over the convenient and reliable supplied rings.

It's ok to like other ways of doing things. Bart is just sharing things that he has learned from the better sailors. In the end....Do what works for you if you're successful.

I’m not familiar with that model boat still find it a good illustration on the attachment.

Usually on the east coast. What about you?

I sail for fun. Too old to race anymore. I cannot see far enough to round marks. I currently operate 3 boats in rotation. So for ease of rigging the mainsail like this I use small size cable clips. Those electrical cable clips sold in packets of hundreds.
It means I can tighten the clip to exactly the right size. One click too far and you can cut it off with scissors, and chuck it away.....
I am left with the clip and its clunky box, with the excess tail sticking out. They are thermoplastic , so I use my soldering iron to cut off the excess and effectively weld the thing in place.
Not traditional and not elegant, but eminently practical imo....
