Here's an important thing that I never mentioned in my little analysis at the end: I knew that Helluva Boss was going to have feels, and it was going to have them very early in the show... But anybody who _didn't_ know that was probably super confused and thrown off by all of this. And I can't blame them, considering the content of the previous two episodes.
Edit: I'm getting a few comments saying that Avatar was a bad example because of how Aang learns about the fate of the Air Nomads in like the third episode. Believe me, I thought about that when I wrote this script, and I knew that a few people would point this out. But was that scene one of the _most_ memorable dramatic moments in Avatar? I don't think so. ATLA started the drama small and then worked its way up. The _really_ intense stuff came later in the show.

I want to say this and this is for random game critic I don't hate you for sending the video just like with CinemaSins they're doing it for entertainment and I tell you said you liked this episode I mean hell there's probably stuff I hate about some of my favorite shows and I still like him the people who are hating you or just use of the incredible hardcore fans who honestly see nothing wrong with anything which are incredibly annoying or just trolls so if people give you a hard time just ignore them

You know, in the beginning, I was kinda confused about what you were going to mention in this video, but you actually had alot of solid reasoning here. I'm currently in the process of creating my own original story, and working out character arcs. I feel like these are just good tips for good story telling over all. I can confidently say that I will be adjusting my own story with these in mind. Thank you!

I think Robo Fizz ripping of Charlie's song is both a reference to the pilot and to the fact that Loo Loo Land is a ripoff to her dad's own amusement park so in canon they probably saw the news segment and just decided to steal her song since they already stole from her dad.

I very much agree with the issues with Baby Octavia’s voice. It was very loud and a bit annoying if I’m being honest. I think the main problem I have with it is the accent. It felt like they weren’t trying for a British accent but rather a weird voice that sounded airy yet somehow nasally at the same time because I actually forgot she was supposed to be British for a minute. I don’t know. Maybe it was bad directing? Maybe it’s just not for me? I can appreciate the effort that goes into voice acting but I’m just not a big fan.

ok but its very obvious that this was NOT the first time her mother started screaming at Stolas. this is clearly a reoccurring issue so its obvious from what she says that this is a problem that her mother has. also i loved how they went ham on the deep emotional stuff early on cause i get SO BORED with shows that take so long to get to the emotional stuff. so so so bored. super glad that we finally got to see some development for Stolas that wasn't that he wants to screw Blitzo all the time. yes that's obviously gonna be a running gag that i love but i was so happy to see him and Octavia. also, the woman Barrett who voices Octavia has a naturally deep voice and some little girls do sound like that. hell, i did as a kid. my voice is naturally deep and it kinda always sounded like that after i turned 4. Octavia is probably like 7 or 8 in the first scene. also, its Hell. that lullaby was spot on with what Via needed at the moment and it was such a spectacular scene.

      @RedReaper1997 3 роки тому +14

@@mothperson1637 if that's the natural story progression and the "edginess" was hinted at in previous seasons, i have no issue with it. like SU which from season 1 had dark themes underneath the happy vibe. or even Gravity Falls which obviously was going in the direction of Weirdmageddon which was hinted at in season 1. or even SvTFOE which had dark themes introduced in season 1 or 2 as well. but at the same time, it took 2 out of 3 of those shows to finally take the gloves off and go ham for their last seasons which i would have loved to see happen earlier. so i was really happy that we got such good character building in episode 2 (Loo Loo Land) and i can't wait for the rest of the cast to get their emotional arc episodes. i didn't think it was too soon, especially since Stolas is a side character and not one of the main 4 (I.M.P.) so we still get to see everyone else get their development too.

I do believe you have a point about the dramatic scene but I respectfully disagree
this scene was I think very well placed as someone who had a rocky relationship with their father. These deep conversations can happen in the least likely of places and times. it just takes one bad day with a few bad events to suddenly open the rift.
I think helluva boss is establishing that this is a comedy with heart. Even though the office and steven universe started with a lighter tone, and got more dramatic as it went, it does not necessarily mean that other shows would be better in that format. I have found that series that show exactly where they are going 1-4 episodes in have better writing overall. I also don't believe that having a heavy moment early on would take away from moments in the future. We can only learn more and have deeper moments when the characters are more developed. But you are entitled to your opinion and I respect it.

I agree about the final scene. I think it would've went better if Octavia had just walked away angry and Stolas caught a glimpse of her face, seeing maybe a tear or two in her eyes. Then he offers her that they go home or apologizes briefly. Then we could still explore their characters, their relationship (not under the lenses of comedy) AND it wouldn't be too much, too soon. Also, it would've set up Stolas's inability to communicate with those he loves.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the scene so so much, but I feel like I would've loved it EVER MORE if it came maybe two or three episodes later

    I'm gonna say
I understand where you're coming from with the ending but I do have a few points of my own
The ending and the moments leading up to it make much more sense after you watch this episode a few more times and notice more things with the dialogue
There were a lot of references to Stolas not listening to 'Via and/or (probably unintentionally) ignoring her (which was finally addressed in the end)
    *Ex.1*
S: Let's go there again! Have a day! Just the two of us!"
    O: I'd rather kill myself
    *later*
O: home doesn't even feel like home anymore... *you* ruined it...
    *Ex.2*
O: hey...dad...do we have to-? *gets cut off*
S: *doesn't even notice that she was talking*
    *Ex 3*
S: You used to cry such tears of joy at this show!
Little O: *litteraly crying from fear*
Stolas has a problem about not listening to his daughter and She doesn't want to be with stolas because she's mad at him
And as a person who has been mad at and has problems with her dad (that I have talked to him about) the ending in this episode and the scenes leading up to is very accurate to me, emotional talks/moments can happen seemingly out of nowhere, even on fun trips to get away from drama (Although the ones I had with my dad involved a lot more crying and focused more on his side of the equation)
Being mad at your parents makes you moody, especially when you're already a moody teen and personally I understood why Octavia was saying and doing the things she did
Although this is my view and not everyone has had or will have the same experiences I did, so I understand how someone will view it differently

After watching the episode too many times, I can totally see your argument about the roundabout ride scene seeming a bit out of place considering the tone of the rest of the episode and the fact that it’s only the second one. However, I would argue that it was taking an approach similar to _Futurama_ in regards to getting the audience to care about an otherwise one-note-seeming character. Where _Futurama’s_ second (or third? don’t remember off the top of my head) episode, while still being really funny, brought in and really emphasized Bender’s emotional attachment to Fry in an effort to make sure the viewers don’t write him off as just “the drunk asshole,” “Loo Loo Land” went out of its way to get the audience to see that there’s a lot more to _Stolas_ than “the guy with a creepy sexual obsession with Blitzo”: he’s got himself a totally wholesome side and genuine family drama that he’s struggling to deal with. I still care more about the imps and their histories and relationships, but now I’m not completely against Stolas (though I do still take issue with him using Blitzo’s dedication to his business to extort him into having regular sex with him, but I think that’s a different can of worms altogether).
    On the other hand:
“This strangely wasn’t the most chaotic trip to Disneyland that a Brandon Rogers character has been on before.”
“When the FUCK did we get to Holland?”

  • @KingGargantuas

In terms of them playing the emotional drama card a bit too early I agree to a certain extent at least, but as far as how it was executed is where I'd respectfully disagree. Firstly, and granted this one's a bit more of a personal reason mind you, but as someone who initially grew up with parents who hated each other and eventually got divorced and, while I'm at least thankful that me and my brother ended up in my mother's custody and that she at least married a much better person, it still lead to some rather difficult and emotionally sad moments in me and my brother's childhood in spite of my mother's best efforts to care for us. And believe me when I say that, while the build-up could've been made more clear, any emotional outbursts and conversations would sometimes happen in the most unlikely of places and/or circumstances. And while like I said the build-up could've been done a bit better, I do feel as though at the very least the lead-in to it with Stolas following after Octavia into the Fun House after she finally storms off was decently well handled, even with some of the jokes peppered in there. I also respectfully disagree with the idea of it potentially taking away from any other emotional moments in the future, after all, I myself am very confident that, even if I'm willing to grant you that some may not have as big an impact by comparison, they'll most likely only use these emotional moments very sparingly. But at the end of the day that's just me, and hey, you do you no matter what people tell you otherwise.

And also holy shit you made a 200 IQ realization that this is only episode 2. What the fuck are they going to do later in the show, if they choose to do more emotional cense. About Spindlehorse having to continue to climb with emotional moments after setting the bar in this episode, I don't think that will be too difficult. After all, we only really got Octavia and Stolas' drama. We didn't get Stolas and Stella's drama (explanation-wise), which could potentially lead to more Octavia and Stolas drama, especially since we know Stolas plans to sleep with Blitzo once a month every month and Stella's no doubt going to continue being pissed at that. With how angry Stella can get, I imagine Stolas might start spending time outside of the palace which could plant some seeds of doubt in Octavia's mind that Stolas was genuine in this episode (obviously, this would have to happen, many, _many_ episodes in the future). I think the scene could have been a tiny bit less emotional but the set up for an explanation on Stolas and Stella's relationship was something I really liked.

  • @supersasukemaniac

I think they are also hoping you read the Instagram profiles. If you've seen Stolas' Instagram then you would know that Octavia made it for him, and the first batch of uploads where mainly him and Octavia hanging out, then at the posts dated a month prior to the pilot, Octavia is out and it's just Stolas or Stolas and Blitzo. The issue though is that Octavia's Instagram didn't unlock until after the episode aired and her first post was back dated to 2 months prior to the first episode, however she does show that Stolas has been at least trying to talk to her for the last 2 months, to a year because she shows that Stolas had sent her an Astrology book, and her post reads "Another gift from Dad. Why does he keep sending me these?" So she probably wants to talk to her dad but feels she isn't being entirely listened too. Which is also shown in two other posts, one where she is working on a song (I think called Listen to Me), and another where she is venting that Stolas wouldn't let her go to a Concert, despite him saying he would let her do anything, within reason as long as it made her happy.

So I'm writing this with the benefit of having seen through ep 7 (having come late to this show, I got to binge the pilot and eps all at the same time), but I wanted to respond to the point you make at about 7:05, where you talk about how it's "too early" in the show to have dramatic/emotional moments in a comedy series, and then you list several other shows that have followed that pattern. I think that's one of the things that is refreshing about HB. We've already seen the story beats a million times before, as you show in your montage. We've all already seen countless media that follows the exact same story pattern. And it's very dull and stale. You say, "the fact that this show has heart could have been a much bigger surprise if they had just bene more patient with the heavy drama." But we've seen that pacing before! We've seen it over and over and over again, it's trite and BORING. I love that the show is amping things up and going beyond that, to somewhere new. And maybe the heart isn't supposed to be a big surprise. Maybe the point is, we're supposed to see the comedy of it AND the pain of it at the same time. They're not mutually exclusive.
HB is "rushing" a bit, one could argue, but by ep 7, it's taken the emotional aspect to a truly new and unexpected place (and unlike you, I think the foreshadowing is really clear in these early eps, but again, I saw them all at once and not over a period of a year like most of the fandom). It's NEW, it feels fresh and unique, like something we haven't seen before. It isn't perfect, I'm not saying that, but I can't really recall a show that is showing the pain and reality of a dynamic like Blitzo's and Stolas'. My jaw has just dropped at seeing a show--let alone an independently created cartoon--decide to tackle these extremely difficult concepts around sex, kink, shame, desire, and trust. A free cartoon handling serious BDSM relationship issues? HOLY CRAP YES PLEASE. You can argue it wasn't well foreshadowed (I personally disagree) but at least it's something fresh and new, and not the same emotional story beats we see over and over and over again. It feels like progression, like development, and I like it.
That they dare to handle these complex topics around sex, trust, consent, family and more is so refreshing. You don't see it in most of the corporate-produced media. I'm glad we're not getting the same story beats. Now, it doesn't excuse poor storytelling, and I think you've hit some fair critiques of the writing. But, I think overall the storytelling is really strong, and it feels like a fresh, new story. Which is pretty damn hard to pull off. I mean, why watch the exact same emotional arc you've seen a thousand times before, when you can have a NEW emotional arc?
I kind of hate to say this, but I'm going to put it out here anyway: I think partially it comes down to the fundamental differences in the way men in general tell stories, and how women in general tell stories. It's not about better or superior or correct, it's just a difference. Now, this is very broad categorization, and it isn't applicable to individuals, you can always find exceptions; I'm talking roughly as a group. There are remarkably few female showrunners in corporate media; most of it has been generated by men. (I'm not saying this as a moral judgment, it's just fact. Historically in US, entertainment is created by men, for a mainly male audience. This isn't disputable, any overview of Hollywood's history will make this readily apparent. That group is also, again not as a moral judgment or castigation, but as fact, that group has also been predominantly white and heterosexual.) And we women can tell the difference. I'd also point to shows like "30 Rock" and, more relevantly, "Tuca and Bertie," which is written by women of color. (The Steven Universe showrunner is a woman [or rather, an individual who identifies as NB but uses she/her and also they/them pronouns], but she learned the ropes on Adventure Time, which was run by a man, so it makes sense that its emotional development would be defined by that experience, because that's where Sugar learned her trade.) The storytelling and the emotional beats are different. I know Brandon Rogers is also writing with Viz, but he's gay, and while Teh Gayz have been in media for longer (but had to be carefully, or not so carefully, hidden), their storytelling beats are likewise different. Again, this isn't a matter of superiority, or right or wrong, or anything else, it's a statement. I think we can all agree that, in the past, US media has been created by straight white men. Today, we're seeing more diversity, and I think that's a positive, because you get different stories, and this is one of them.
I don't want to start, like, an argument or debate about this. I'm just saying, I think one of the reasons why I really love this show is it feels more like it was written for me, the same way I really enjoy "Tuca and Bertie," for example. I just resonant more with female writers (IN SOME WAYS). It doesn't mean they're better, or that I hate media created by men. I enjoy a lot of media created by men. But I think that's a key reason why the emotional development is moving at a different pace, and why you, who I presume to be a man, find it somewhat jarring. You're more used to, more attuned to, pacing we've seen in most of our other media, because it was created by people who are more like you. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, good and bad don't factor into it. I'm just offering it as an explanation as why people (male or female, gay or straight, of any ethnicity) react to media the way they do. It's very broad and generalized, but I think it's a reasonable framework to anchor one's self to.

I've been with this show since the very beginning. I've also been following these EEW videos from the very beginning. Looking back on these videos, it was really an omen of things to come honsetly. You saw the cracks in Helluva Boss way before those cracks broke. And the fandom didn't take the cracks you pointed out seriously until it all came crashing down in season 2, where they now have hindsight and are seeing the cracks in season 1 that were an omen of what was come.
I never had super high expectations for Helluva. Ever. I never was a super fan or anything like that. My main goal when watching this show is fun, so the bad writing doesn't bother me how it does for other people. The fans werre let down, I simply never was. And it's honestly because of your EEW videos. Like I said, I followed along your videos from the literal pilot came out. And all these points you have made, either I agree with, or don't agree with but i completely understand. And I've always been this way. Ive always seen the cracks in this show how you did. Its just a shame that no one took your warnings until the cracks fell apart.
What I'm basically saying it, it's insane how right you were all along, and no one has listened until now.

Also, the people on this team don’t even know if they’re going to get that many episodes to give that kind of build up. Not being contrary, but i thought this emotional beat was perfectly handled.

I also want to add something to your critical review that also dampens this episode: Vivzie made Stolas the good guy. In this situation IRL, Stolas cheated on his wife and is looking to continue doing that. He is a grade A bad guy. But with writing Stella being more angry at the fact he slept with an Imp, writing Stolas not seeing his little girl as a teenager, and that ending scene, she has completely written Stolas in a bright light. Now the fans love him and wanna see Stolas as this amazing dad character (though to be fair I've seen some rare Stella love in the fandom). Glossing over the reason Octavia is in this situation WAS the cheating.

To be quite honest, I feel like viv shouldn't have made the characters official intsagram accounts and have background lore and plot on those. On stolas' Instagram, we see he's unhappy with his wife, but happy with blitzø, he's clearly staying with Stella as an attempt to keep Octavia happy. He's also Royalty, and that kind of thing is probably a touchy subject in hell. I agree that it's too soon for feels, I want to get to know the family dynamic more before I have to immediately jump on Octavia and stolas' side. Stella is not fleshed out, and she seems very neglectful presently, but the family photos suggest otherwise. There's so much content on these characters instagrams that need to be seen before watching these episodes and I think it's a very poor choice. I think viv used it as a way to keep fans entertained.

I disagree that the Stolas-Octavia moment wasnt built up at all, but I totally agree that they should have saved this scene for much later in the show’s lifetime so the scene can really gut punch us and make us actually care about stolas. Maybe if they ended the episode with octavia making a snide aside about stolas’ immature behavior and out of touch ideas on cheering her up, it would preserve the throughline of the episode without rushing their conflict resolution, and we could possibly have a moment where Stolas looks between the burning park and his daughter with some flickers of guilt and concern across his face before moving back to focus on the imps or even ending there.

I feel like we could have few more seconds of worried dad to flush previous emotion before this scene. Near Octavia sad part.

I feel like I can spring between comedy and drama when watching a show on a dime. Sometimes, the fact that I am laughing about a situation moments ago makes it hit home all the harder when the actual damage is revealed.
Its all fun and games until someone actually gets hurt.

I hate when people who do these type of content have to properly explain what they mean.
He is obviously not trying to say this show is bad. The small sins are just for laughs and not entirely serious while the longer ones are actually something he has a problem with. Like, do people think that just because something is good, it doesn't have bad parts? A critic job is to point out the good and bad parts, and in EWW, in my opinion, they point out the bad while also making a few cracks at insignificant things.
After stating that, let me tell my opinion of the nitpicks you chose:
    - While i liked Baby Octavia voice, when i heard the older Octavia voice, i thought the former was a bit deeper and thats the only problem i have with the voice.
    - I did notice that Moxxie voice sounded like he was reading from the script and not actually voice acting, but then i thought that he was just explaining and wasn't that terrified by theme parks.
    - The funny scene cut short would have been bad if we Blitz suddendly appeared, but since we saw him in the background, we already knew what was going to happen. I agree that there could have been a funny scene beforehand and i actually wanted to see what Millie would do.
    - I agree with you on the emotional scene being a bit too early, but im positive that we won't have one for a while and when we get used to the comedy, they are going to hit us with another impactful scene.

Bruh I love these videos and I love Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. I don’t know why but by the looks of the comments you showed, a lot of the people in your comments failed to understand you’re as much of a fan as I am of Vivziepop’s stuff and don’t know (despite you explaining in one of the videos - I don’t remember which) that these are more parodies of cinemasins than actual cinemasins, with some minor harmless criticism that still allows everyone to enjoy the show and also thoroughly appreciating it at the same time

I can respect your opinion..but that scene where Octavia and stolas talked really hit me and made me cry. My family is like Octavias a lot and its one of my favorites and episode 3. It hurt but felt good when i saw she actually talked to her dad. My dad doesn't take the time to spend time with me or take the time to actually talk. It felt good to see it and how they took on a broken family. Just my opinion like yours is too. And i never laughed at the broken family bits besides the phone call. That might just be me and relating to having a broken family.

4:32 Have you shot more than one gun? It takes some getting used-to to being able to make your shots with a model (or ammunition) you haven't gotten the experience with already.
Plus, carny pressure guns aren't exactly all that similar to regular firearms outside of shape, so there is also that.

Personally, I respectfully disagree on your shared complaint with both this episode and the Addict music video. Adding hints and layers of more mature themes and character exploration early on allows the audience to get used to those elements of the show so it doesn't come off as jarring later on in the series when more dramatic and heavy stuff comes later.

I agree with you on the ending scene. I felt it was too early, im not saying I disliked it but, my reason for this is thus:
To me, Robo Fizz took away from the Stolas and Octavia plot. I think this episode wouldve worked better if it was more focused on Robo Fizz. I'm not just saying that because he is my favorite character, but I'm saying it because 80% of the people who I watched reacting to this had more to say about fizzaroli than Octavia and Stolas. But I still think this was by far the best animation I've seen out of Vivzes other works.

i think the reason Millie missed her shot was because its a carnival game in hell, I'm 99% sure that gun would have been rigged.

before watching this the only complaint i have abt the ending scene is how i wish they couldve moved the scene wherein octavia tells stolas that “hes pretty ok at times” to a later episode since it felt like it was just shoehorned in there way more than the supposed “feels trip” scene right before it. but after watching your review, i comlletely agree with just moving the entire two scenes to a later episode instead.

I think that, once stolas dies, Octavia is going to become the next stolas, and by that I mean actually renaming herself, y'know?

Forgot a sin . It's a small detail but it has always annoyed me : WHY in the flashback of robofizz flashback is little Octavia in her pijama she is outside why is she in her pijama? Like i know that stolas seems like the type of father who can barely say "no " to his kid but do you mean to tell me that he would be okay with his kid going to an amusement park in her pijama ? , And Stella specifically dosent seems like she would allow her kid to go out in their pijama. Like i know it's a small , unnecessary detail but the dress that little Octavia had in the kitchen picture was SO FRICKING ADORABLE WHY COULDN'T WE SEE THAT IN THE ROBOFIZZ FLASHBACK?

Perhaps all the feels in this episode are a set up for Estella being an antagonist and knowing who to route for when those battles come
