Ry Cooder..the best slide man there was on a guitar performance and entertainment on stage for all his fans..fantastic performance..never to be forgotten..it's 2022 and still listening..lifetime of beautiful and joyful singing and slide on his guitar..
MUSIC HAS CHANGED MANY LIVES BEEN LISTENING TO COODER SINCE EARLY 70S BLUES MEN LOOKED YOUNG UNTIL OVER 2000..MADE IT TO 70 YRS AND MANY FRIENDS WENT HOME.
Im a guitar player like probably most of you guys here commenting, and i think you will agree that Ry Cooder is the most musical guitarist there every has been in fact I would go as far to say as there aint nobody going to be like him
The 1972 Ry Cooder with the hippy bandana - that's how I first saw him when we overlapped briefly as students at the same college. He was sweet, shy, and devastatingly darling. Not yet famous, but he had a rep as a good guitar player. I tried to fling myself at him, but he was wisely having none of my shenanigans. I sigh for the fish who got away... But luckily for Ry, in my case, he dodged a bullet! Connie Crooker Reed College, '69
Such a great lesson in slide guitar. Interesting to see how many different slides he uses: glass, bottlenecks, copper pipe. But always on the left pinky and it seems that no matter what guitar, he always plays with bare right hand thumb and fingers. Thanks for putting this together.
I first heard Ry Coder's slide guitar in 1970 on Gordon Lightfoot's album "If you could read my mind." He played some tasteful licks behind "Me and Bobbie McGee." Been a fan of slide guitar and Ry Cooder ever since
Such an undervalued musician. Been lovin` his stuff for years. I tell my friends about him, and they all go `oh yeah, the lil` sister guy`, at which point I get annoyed and walk away.
What I find interesting is the fact that, with computers, programs like Pro Tools, new types of synthesizers; one can imitate so many instruments including the voice in so many ways. I have a young relative-not to plug him but this ties in--named Aaron Leutwiler who is a percussionist besides his day job setting up restaurants. Anyway you can see his invention along with tutorials on You Tube. (Again, I am not spamming but he came to Puerto Rico and greatly impressed me.) In conclusion, young musicians with initiative, creativity and great talent should be able to work at music full time. (Think of how Robert Fripp (I will check to see if I have his name correctly) from King Crimsom (with David Bowie on Heroes)--did some amazing things with a guitar hooked up to a synthesizer. Check it out if you don't know what I am taking about.)
There are (3) three kinds of people when it comes to guitars. Guitar owners, guitar players & guitarists. I can only play that's why I became a luthier.
ry dont you ever die. i am fed up wi there gods as it is. pull up some dust and sit down. the guitar has always worked that man for our emmense pleasure very many thanks
Vigilante Man, Buena VIsta Social Club, I used to love her but it's all over now. Who has ever shown such variety. He says that it was because he never had a hit. Like Al Kooper he has gone from one project to the next with freedom to choose all types of musical styles. Like Peter Gabriel also.
Doug Stamper 20 or so years ago I got a Rolling Stones box set. Something like 200 songs. It had all the usual hits, and quite a few id never heard (I was only around 20 at the time). I had never heard of memo from turner. The first time I heard it, the slide guitar absolutely blew my mind. It has remained my favorite stones song to this day.
Saw this great man in 1988, Munich on the 'Get Rhythm' tour. Brilliant. Plus Ry was his usual grumpy difficult self pissing off members of the audience. Classic stuff a real legend.
Thanks for posting such a great compilation! It's just incredible when one ponders the fact that this just scratches the surface of Ry's wonderful playing! What a joy!
Not to get carried away but I find this discussion to be so useful--I read somewhere that all instruments really come from the human voice. Of course organs can imitate many other instruments. Even percussion which may also have been used by early man to sound the alarm, imitate the rhythm or cadence of voices. I recently participated in a drum circle in Middletown, CT and was amazed to see how people of varying levels of skill could play together on many types of percussion. We even ended up in 5/4 time at one point. It showed me how important what we call the "clave" or basic rhythm is. You play the clave hard and everyone can start improvising, singing, dancing etc.
+Robert Leutwiler music is basic a fabric if you will it weaves together all aspects of life the daily motion of rhythm is in everything all around & encompassing are very breathe it's nature,it's life,it's all music. it's in all of our everything that we are .
I could add that life is poetry, art, music, design, color, form, etc. Poetry is music if it has any value but also painting and cooking to a certain extent as well as nature. Of course no artist can realize all these values together. Kandinsky and Picasso work in styles totally in opposition to photo realism and surrealism (Miro Klee Calder Dali above all.) I respect Walt Whitman and love Bob Dylan but they are not lyrical. Neither is early Muddy Waters or Lightning Hopkins while Mississippi and many older blues great are (were) flowing streams of righteousness.
Mississippi John Hurt, Elmore James. James Brown with a lot of sweat, Al Green, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson with his devil fear and cutting edge. Even Santana.
+Robert Leutwiler Maybe that is apples and oranges. The circumstances were so different. I love creativity, and all the greats are unique. I can listen to Lightning Hopkins and early Muddy Waters forever. Not to mention Al Kooper, The Blues Project and the 1st album by Blood, Sweat and Tears. Eric Clapton and early Fleetwood Mac.
Interesting that in the video where Ry is talking about his old baby blue guitar he says it's really not very good for bottleneck. On this one he is playing bottleneck on it sometimes. Of course he's a master musician and can do whatever he wants and make it sound good.
From Lancaster and Captain Beefheart, his "Performance" with Mick, Long Riders with the Carradines, to Geronimo's soundtrack, I have followed him slipping and sliding those strings..
Some of the early blues men played and sang with incredible feeling even if they did not have the techniques of people like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. I especially admire Lightning Hopkins, early Muddy Waters, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississipi John Hurt and Robert Johnson, of course.
I agree with you, Becks plays all kinds of stuff these days just because he can! i.e technically brilliant but musically poor. For example Page is not technically as good as Beck but musically he is untouchable. I am a musician and I admire technical ability but at the end of the day music is to be listened to so I don't care how brilliant the musician is - just what they can produce that I like
What a man! Never saw any pictures of him, much less live before but he is is the highest level of respect in my book forever now......still wondering how he got so good??????????????

Open letter to Mr. Ry Cooder: Ry, you're invited any time. Please, please, please feel welcome to share your music. You've a world of fans who, well, just can't get enough. And if you can find it in your schedule to do so, come back around the Santa Cruz/San Jose neighborhood sometime. I regret to no end missing your '87 show at the Catalyst. Play on.
Nice compilation of Ry's music. Love the material with Flaco Jimenez especially. biamaku you have a great video and even better taste for class music. Thanks for sharing buddy.
+Riki Graber - awww, Riki, now you know that would be a damned shame. You just sit down and play a tune from your heart...then play it again, this time with, you know, ~that~ feeling... And you're so right about the scope and thoughtfulness of this medly.
Great compilation. I don't think Ry gets the credit he deserves. this is one great guitar man.

Thank you Thank You Thank You, I have been touched deeply by Ry Cooder’s music since 1972, and I am loving him more now than ever.
MUSIC HAS CHANGED MANY LIVES BEEN LISTENING TO COODER SINCE EARLY 70S BLUES MEN LOOKED YOUNG UNTIL OVER 2000..MADE IT TO 70 YRS AND MANY FRIENDS WENT HOME.
All star classic slide man. Crazy riffs, tasteful tunes, laying down a legacy. My kind of musical brillance.
Im a guitar player like probably most of you guys here commenting, and i think you will agree that Ry Cooder is the most musical guitarist there every has been in fact I would go as far to say as there aint nobody going to be like him
Ry gives everything he has at every event. The man, the myth, the legend. Nuff said
My Mom could play slide guitar and Ry was her favorite. RIP Mom. Ry play on.

Beautiful presentation. I know it took lots of work to put it together, but millions of us will appreciate for many years. Thanks.
Im a harp player and get my mileage with Ry Cooder. He took me all the way down highway 61.
Never heard of Ry until Yesterday. He is one of the Greats. The Style is Natural.

Country, blues, rock doesn't matter for Ry Codder is a master musician of the slide on just about anything with strings!!!
I forgot how much I love Ry Cooder. His slide guitar is the sexiest and most seductive playing out there.
Such an undervalued musician. Been lovin` his stuff for years. I tell my friends about him, and they all go `oh yeah, the lil` sister guy`, at which point I get annoyed and walk away.
Mister Ry Cooder... teacher... master of the slide guitar...
Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth, Roy Rogers and Derek Trucks are our greatest living slide players enjoy them all while you can!
A very nice tribute! Ry Cooder is one of my favorites.
Thanks. I began listening to Ry in'74. Changed up my game in music big time.
Amazing !
Ry Cooder's sound and playing is great !

It's in your ear. Some got it I don't. How is it tuned? It does not matter if your ear can stop on a tone.

When Ry plays God takes a coffee break to listen.
Definitely one of the best living exponents of the art
Мајстор над мајсторите! Секоја чест, мајсторе, браво!! Поздрав од Македонија!

Ry Cooder is the greatest.
+Robert Leutwiler I AGREE 100%
Vigilante Man, Buena VIsta Social Club, I used to love her but it's all over now.
Who has ever shown such variety. He says that it was because he never had a hit. Like Al Kooper he has gone from one project to the next with freedom to choose all types of musical styles. Like Peter Gabriel also.
First heard him on "Memo from Turner" and was electrified!!!!!! My favorite.

The slide in that song is hopped up with testosterone. I love it.
Eighty-eight thumbs down? Really? This is genius on display, my friends. We lived in an incredible era, and I am thankful.
Excellent collection of slide by Ry Cooder ....thanks biamaku !!
I am in LOVE with Ry Cooder, because he earns this. LOVE.
Always been a fan
this man is a genius
With Flacco Jimenez on the accordion. How awesome.

Lots of great guitar players out there, but this is one of the class guys.
This is just great. I love Ry's slide work ! Thank you for gathering all these pieces and putting them together !!
Introduced Keith Richards to Open G which became his trademark tuning. Thanks Ry!
A man who knows his trade and makes everything better.
The master of blues guitar , great

One hell of a great man right there!...
no description necessary. this is GOLD.
he really plays his instrument & around here we say he makes it talk.that' s talent there

+Robert Leutwiler original Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist said that they were influenced by Ry Cooder the way he's just plug in &play
CERTAINLY THE GREATEST SLIDE GUITAR PLAYER EVER
+Roger Lee Meyzindi Some of the old guys back in Mississippi could really play not to mention the Chicago Blues Players.
Nope...Elmore James is 'The King of Slide Guitar"
True but apples and oranges.
They both have their place in the hall of greatness for different reasons.
Simply amazing 🎉
A symphony.... in whatever number of strings Ry Cooder esquire caresses ....!!!
There is everyone who's ever played slide guitar...and then there is RY
Ry Cooder, Father of World Music
That's subjective
god damn....cant even think of a single name who can even touch this man on slide.
Love Ry Cooder, thank you
Love , Peace and Ry Cooder!!!❤✌️🎸😉...
Aaah...love this
beautifully compiled maestro's highlights
Thank you. Fantastic. Ry's work has always been powerful. Way more than he knows. This is brilliant.
The greatest slide player of them all
whoa... Albert King, B. B. King and Ry Cooder... SO COOL!
My biggest Dream would be to play the bass for this man👍❤️🍻
Interesting that in the video where Ry is talking about his old baby blue guitar he says it's really not very good for bottleneck. On this one he is playing bottleneck on it sometimes. Of course he's a master musician and can do whatever he wants and make it sound good.

Wow, makes me want to get a slide and practice my guitar.
Yo sigo siendo un admirador y un aprendiz del MAESTRO "RYU COODER"!!!...
Great collage
Thanks brother
Be great to see complete versions. The master at work.
Now I know others may disagree, but for my nickel it's guitarists Jeff Beck, the late Rory Gallagher, and this man, Ry Cooder.
+Mike McCune - can't forget Les Paul...
Some of the early blues men played and sang with incredible feeling even if they did not have the techniques of people like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc.
I especially admire Lightning Hopkins, early Muddy Waters, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississipi John Hurt and Robert Johnson, of course.
you have great taste in guitarists. theyre all doing original stuff with the instrument. not just typical shredders
Beck's sound is a disgraceful mess. The goofy chick working the bass is simply a sideshow. His best work is in 60' & 70's - now, not worth hearing.
I agree with you, Becks plays all kinds of stuff these days just because he can! i.e technically brilliant but musically poor. Wonderful.
Great guitar work. One of my favorite slide player. It also was cool to see a younger Tex Mex Flaco Jimenez on the accordion. RIP Flaco.
Flaco is still alive ?!
Stuart blackwood
Thanks for correction. I thought he bit the big Norteno Taco.
Love me some Ry Cooder !!!
Love it! Thanks.
he may not have invented slide, but he perfected it.
