Your pointing out that loving a camera for its feel and the way it works being more important than specs is so true. Also, this most important part of the experience of photography is so poorly lit by camera sites that are in the pockets of cameras companies. Bravo, excellent well rounded and honest video. More please.
this is the best review i have seen for Canon G3X! i appreciate your precise focus points. we're going to Barcelona and Paris next week...and you're review has me sold! thank you :)
Hi, Greetings from India! I would like to know that, is it a good idea to buy today a product like G3X which was launched in 2015? Or I should wait for its successor? I'm confused! Please guide!
Hello, Sarang:) Well that totally depends on what you want to do with the camera. Are you interested in vlogging or general videography or something else? It can be worth your while to wait for a successor and if all they upgrade isn't of interest to you, then you can benefit from the drop in price of the g3x because of the new model. I for example always recommend the g7x instead of the g7x II, for that exact reason. Same with the 70D and the 80D. So that can be a reasoning... What is it exactly that you want to do with the camera? Greetings!
Firstly many thanks for your such a quick reply :) Well, basically I'm an architect & a hobby photographer, I like travel photography a lot, then some architectural, candid photos etc. I had used canon SX20is before this. Regards,
I'd say the G3X is a good choice for travel photography, allthough it is rather a video centric camera. Maybe also check out the panasonic fz1000 which is more ohotography centric, but lacks a touch screen. Reading on from this point forward might result in more confusion:) Just a disclaimer:) Ok, for travel and architecture 28mm of the sx20 is not that wide, especially for arcitecture a wider end lens would propably be more convenient....then again for travel fotography a big zoomrange is important, that's propably why you were interested in a superzoom in the first place..... From an Sx20 is is a definite step up to a G3X. Bigger sensor, bigger pixels, touchscreen, headphone input, external audio input, 1080p60 video, more MP(20.2), wider angle lens(24mm vs 28 on the Sx20), higher ISO and so on....also the price is considerably higher:) But if you're more of a photographer than a videographer, have you also looked at say something like a panasonic zs100. It's a pocket zoom with very good specs, apart from some softness on the wide end. It is comparable in price, but more photography centric, whereas the g3x is more video centric. Of yourse these are very different cameras. I just thought I could mention such a pocket zoom, since you're predominantly behind the camera, not vlogging and filming yourself. So external audio is none of your concerns as well as a selfy screen is not a necessity for you I take it. Also a sony A6000 might be a good fit, if you are prepared to spend like a grand on the body and say the sony 18-105mm. Then again all other options aside, the canon takes very good photos, AF in photo mode is decent, manual focus is also an option in the high millimeters....and should you choose to do video, it does an ok job in that department as well. Also the magnesium alloy build will withstand the action you might encounter during travelling. Hope that helps you out a little:) If you have more questions just ask. Greetings!
My bummer is no EVF!! I have /love my LUMIX G85, w/ 45-200mm, but want this for compact zoom shooting (too much $$ for a good ILC high zoom lens). Would you cjoose this over the LUMIX FZ 1000 Or 2500? I’m big LUMIX fanboy!
Excellent review! Very informative. I just suggest you use in your future videos background music that has no lyrics and that the tone is lower. Thanks!
Thanks for a great overview of the camera. I enjoyed the vlog with this camera that you shared as well. I have been considering the G3X for a vlogging camera, but still not sure at the price point if it is really the one for me.
Thanks you so much! Great that you liked both videos! Yup the pricepoint is too high when it's new. I got a 630 deal in Germany, which is ok. There's currrently a 658 deal with a 30 day return policy: www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00ZM1E46I/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1473207522&sr=8-1&keywords=g3x+canon&condition=used That may be an offer to consider. Get one like that, run with it for a week. Shoot a vlog with it.....:)
BTW....I am working on a nice solution for the microphone problem right now...that will hopefully make things easier when it comes to handling a cam with a flip up screen, it's not a g3x exclusive solution though...
You might wanna check out the canon EOS M3 ...that might be somehting for you.....I'll do a review about it in like two weeks from now....haven't tested it yet, but that also seems like a really good vlogging cam....same mic problem though..
Thanks for the review. I hope the G3 X Mark II will have a built-in EVF, fully articulated touchscreen and enough specs to rival seriously other 1" sensor in the same category ... #RX10M4, #FZ2000 or #FZ2500, #FZ1000, #Vlux5, and probably a coming NEW #NikonDL24-500 (rumors).
No, sensor too little and f stop too high. At night APS C and f1.8 is a minimum in my opinion. Maybe check out a sony a6400 and the sigma 16mm or 30mm f1.4. That would be my camera of choice for a concert in lowlight, or at night.
Thanks a lot for this review. I currently work with a EOS 70D and G7X so I thought that might be a good way to go and only have one camera while on the go. I will give it a try.
Three questions: Do you really have to have the superzoom range? Are you prepared to handle this, in comparison with the g7x mII, bulky camera? Do you want to hook up external audio? Honestly, thank you so much for replying. The fact that you took the time to write back is greatly appreciated and deserves a sub! I also decided to go wit the G3X thanks to your help! Cheers!
For me it would be the G3X, because external audio is more important to me than the smaller formfactor. If you don't mind the lack of an external audio input go with the more comfortable smaller form factor of the g7x ii. Sensor, video modes and AF system are pretty much the same........hope that helps! Greetings!
thanks man! yeah that is exactly what i'm thinking. i love the 1.8 aperture on the G7x mark ii. every little bit helps. man, i just don't know. TORN! haha
Hey, Punjabi Village Food Factory! Well the G3X is cheaper, but the autofocus noise of the lens always ends up on the audio track, even when using an external mic. The EOS 7D has no continuous AF in movie mode unfortunately. That is a real downside with the Camera I think. Except the one operating it has no problem constantly pulling focus manually. Going by these downsides I would suggest the G3X over the 7D, because autofocus is more important in my opinion than the audio problem. But might I suggest a different camera as well. For what you do, I watched a couple of your videos, I think another good option would be the Canon SL2 aka 200D with the 18 135mm stm lens and maybe the rode video micro or rode video mic pro as an external microphone. It is small, it has a tilt svivel screen, the AF in video mode is very good, it is relatively wide on the wide end and with the 135mm you can zoom in on the food for detail shots. Hope that helps you out a little. More questions? just ask:) Greetings!
I bought a Canon camera G3X but Inside the body of the camera there as part off and move the motion but the camera is still functioning. The why? please reply
Hey! Everything is allright. The lens is optically stabilized. There is a single lens element that is used for that stabilization and this element is held in place via electric magnets WHEN THE CAMERA IS TURNED ON. So as soon as these magnets get the electric current they fix the lens element in place and the stabilization works. When the camera is TURNED OFF the magnets can't keep the lens element stable and that's when you might hear the clicking inside the lens barrel. That is just the way it is built, you donÄt have to worry, it is not broken:) Btw. I haven't forgotten about the eos m3 g3x comparison, i will do that video, I just have a lot on my plate right now...but I will do it. Greetings!
Hey, Sameeia Hussain! It*s more of a video centric camera. Stills are ok, but not great in my experience. Of course the zoom range is fantastic. So if versatility is more important than quality of image I think the camera can be a consideration for stills. If what you want to do is predominantly stills though I would go with nothing less than a 24MP aps c sensor camera. What do you want to do with the camera? Just stills?
Hey, kakawachi! Both cameras have the star trails, star time lapse movie modes:) You are going to have to think about another spec to decide I am afraid:)) What do you want to use the camera for, if I might ask? Greetings!
It is a camera you can use for vlogging for sure. It just has video autofocus problems in the higher mm range and, because it is a purely contrast detect AF system, sometimes has a tendency to stick to the background instead of your foreground subject. But if you're filming yourself, the facedetection is pretty good, because it allows you to register different views of your head, like a front shot, profile shot and angled shots. This way it has usually no problem focusing on your face. In lowlight situations unfortunatelly video AF performance drops noticably.... so if you're predominantly shooting during the day with good light, take the time to do a good face registration and are ok with the fact that sometimes the AF system doesn't lock onto your subject the first time and that you're better off with manual focus in the really high mm range, like above 100mm, then the G3X is a really good vlogging camera. Big zoom range, very nice color reproduction, external audio capable + headphone input for monitoring...it is not as compact a formfactor as a point and shoot like the g7x of course.... Hope that helps:) Any more questions? Feel free to ask:) Greetings!
hello... i have a second hand g3x and when i used to zoom the motor is squeking like an iron squeking... does your g3x make that kind of sound either? thanks for the reply... :,)
Hi, excellent video and what I was looking for. Which camera would be like this one (fixed lens, minimum 10X zoom, But With Better Video AF? Do you find the glass quality is not being taken into consideration but actually does help for better autofocus during video? Very much interested into this topic as I want to film rugby matches and present something that will be presentable, like a camcord when filming sports... i´m trying to find the camera that doesn´t long for a camcord video quality wise.
Hey, glass quality is a factor, but the main thing to look for when looking for video AF performance is as many phase detection AF points as possible. A sony A6300 with a good standard zoom like the SEL 55 210 would do the trick, but the camera tends to overheat quickly. Fixed lens cameras like superzooms, but with phase detection within the same price range I haven't heard of...sony rx10 series might be worth looking at, panasonic FZ series, but those are purely contrast detect systems like the g3x...sorry, can't help you there with the perfect answer... If you only want to film certain parts of the game and you don't have long takes, go for the a6300 and a standard zoom. Interchanable lens system, overheating, but stellat AF performance. If you want to film the whole game and have excellent AF performance you have to spend serious money, either looking at big dslrs or big mirrorless cameras with expensive glass....to my knowledge there is no superzoom with an AF system like the sony alphas, especially like the a6300.
TubeNoob I´m just loooving your expllanation. thankyou so much. I do have to film long, the whole thing (rugby match. 40 min plus 40 min, and in very hot weather). I get paid very little, as part is ad honorem...but I still want to get the action to present it, maybe I end up getting a camcorder. Have you seen the new Nikons? one of them has good zoom and seems to be good in video, in writting though I dont know if it has phase detection instead of contrast detect systems. thankyou again, it was lovely to read
Allright, then I tend to recommend the sony rx10 series....rx10 mark2 if you can work with the smaller zoom range, the rx10 mark3 if you're willing to go up in price, if you really need the full 600mm....hope you will find the right one for you.....get deals with return policies if you can!:) Greetings!
Yes I do, or I will use it again. I rent my stuff to people when I can to make some money back on the cost, the G3X has just returned and I will do a comparison video vs the eos m3. It's such a nice camera, you quickly remember when you hold it again after some weeks:)! Where are you from? Since you have a mediamekt around...Greetings!
TubeNoob an Italian living in Vienna ;) Man great idea and spirit of entrepreneurship. The g3x is definitely a great camera. The more I compare it to other cameras the more I want it :) at the moment I shoot mainly with a g7xm2 and have also a g81 Panasonic but have rarely used it. I vlog a lot and the kit lens at night sucks badly! Anyway man, always happy u answer and interact with us ;) where exactly are u in Germany?
Ah Vienna, I visited last year checking out the museum of art. Nice buffet on sundays:) Nice camera combo. Well come nighttime it's always difficut, except if you wanna go A7SII, but then again the AF system isn't good, A7RII has fantastic AF, but not the great lowlight performance...of course the price of both systems is ridiculously high at the moment:) Always nice to react to the comments:) I am from the south of germany - near Stuttgart. Greetings!
Thanks for the valuable comment! That's an important tip! I'll test it and will propably do a little video on that:) I love that thing too:) It's just a cool camera. And I really liked the wildlife footage at 600mm!
Thank you very much! I think your videos are great, and I liked the vlogging video the best. It was very interesting to see a glimpse of your day and Germany :) I usually use Canon 70D, but I had G3 X for testing for a few weeks and I liked it, because it was so hassle free. Now I have a dilemma which one should I buy, because 70D I use is my fathers and it is difficult to borrow it all the time :D I like the features in 70D, but I'm not sure if I am enough pro to get it, because really I'm just a blogger. I need good quality, and for filming in studio G3 X is enough. Also the lens is very silent and the zoom-in is so easy. But 70D + 18-135 kit would be the smartest choice, also I can change the lens and it is more versatile. What do you think? :) I'm bugging my mind for weeks!! I'm also looking at Panasonic, Sony, Nikon, but nothing speaks to me, because I need articulated screen and I love touch screen, it's just so easy. Also I use external mic - I don't depend on the built in. I would choose G7 X because it's so small, if it had a input for mic, but there isn't one. Do you have any other suggestions for me? :) Sorry I'm writing an essay here :D
The G3X is a great camera for sure, but for your kind of videos the 70D with any kind of STM zoom lens, the 18 135 is especially silent in video mode, is propably the best fit all around for the very reasons you already named. plus now that the 80D is out the price point of the 70D dropped a little:) Nikon and panasonic don't have the great video autofocus performance, in that department there's some fujis that are pretty good, but then again they lack the tilt-svivel screen. sonys are pretty good in the Video AF department, but tend to overheat if you have a lot of long takes, except if you go prosumer level like a7rII, but that's too much money imho...don't use the g7x! the focusing of that little thing can be totally off or drifting, depending on how much contrast the image has....for good video autofocus performance check the specs for "on sensor phase detect" and the more "phase detect auto focus points" the better the video AF performance. I always check imaging resource com when I am interested in a new camera for these very specs to get an idea of how good the video af is. It's a great website for that. The only other pick would be the 70Ds little mirrorless siter, the EOS M3 with the 18-55 and 55-200 STM M lenses. But if you mount an external shotgun mic ontop of this camera it interferes with the flip up screen, so you would have to use a lav mic or a separate tripod for the shotgun mic, which works, I do it that way, but isn't as convenient as mounting the mic onto the camera and just hit record. I'd say go with the 70D and the 18-135mm STM. The canons don't pack all the features of the sonys or the panasonics for example, but they are workhorses that do their job fine and they are reliable. Plus the 70Ds AF system is very good:) Hope that helps:)
Hey, Muneer Lyati! Are you talking about the X-Series? I guess you are.... That's a tough question...depends on what you prefer...if you prefer a small form factor the g7x or g5x.....if you definitely want audio, then g3x.....for vlogging my recommendation among those cameras would propably be the g5x: The G3X is pretty bulky if you only use it for vlogging.....and the g7x has no external audio, no hotshoe, no tilt svivel screen... The g5x has.... ...a tilt svivel screen, hotshoe mount for additional gear, decent zoom range, 1080p60.....soso video autofocus but good face tracking.....for vlogging the g5x would propably be my pick......yes...., if the g3x was too bulky for you and you wouldn't mind not having the greatest of external audio... (I have to come up with a mic hack for the g3x one of these days.....:) Hope that helps you out:) Greetings!
if i use Rode VideoMicro with G3x... i know the screen will be blocked but still the screen will be fully tilting upwards or does the external microphone doesn't let the screen to be tilt fully?? help bro!
Hello, Arsalan:) With the little adapter in between the mic and the camera, the screen will tilt fully upright, but with the mic only the base of the mic prevents the screen from tilting to a full 180 degrees. Greetings!
At first i was about to buy Sony A6000 but it doesn't have microphone input so I thought of buying this Canon G3x but now this tilting and blocking problem. So now i gonna buy Canon 750D. Is 750D A nice Dslr for indoor video Shooting purpose? One more help.
Well, I haven't used that one yet. I have heard of autofocus problems with this rebel series from the specs alone it seems like a good camera. It's the 70Ds "little sister".....it doesn't have the dual pixel AF of the 70D but it has a phase detect AF system, so that's a plus.....canons are workhorses. You can definitely give her a try. Just get a deal with a good return policy. The 70D of course would pretty much be the classic go to indoor camera for youtube, and since neistat put it on y gorillapod it is used for vlogging as well....you might find it worth your while to check out the 70D as well, it dropped in price a little since the 80D was released. Just ask if you have more questions:) Greetings!
TubeNoob Well, Thank You So Much for Replying and giving me Your Precious Time. Few More Questions I want to ask then I'll be done. (: p.s: subscribed 😉
Yea sorry I was kinda drown into your video so that I wrote that comment kinda brain afk. Indeed, you're way to underrated! You shall rise one day. Hope so.
Oh you were talking about me! I thought you were talking about the camera:)!! In that case: Wow that's the finest compliment I have ever recieved, man! You're in my eternal cool book, dude! Thank you so much!

Ich couldn't decide if you giving a concert or presenting a camera. This type of videos ist what the world dies mit need.
this is the best review i have seen for Canon G3X! i appreciate your precise focus points.

If what you want to do is predominantly stills though I would go with nothing less than a 24MP aps c sensor camera.
What do you want to do with the camera? Just stills?
TubeNoob Thank you so much for replying! Yes just stills, I'm considering the canon g7x Mark 2 and the canon eos m3. Not sure which one to get.
I'm about to decide between G3x and g7xmii. Time lipse is important for me. G7x only star time lapse??
Hey, kakawachi! Both cameras have the star trails, star time lapse movie modes:) You are going to have to think about another spec to decide I am afraid:))
What do you want to use the camera for, if I might ask? Greetings!
Thanks! This helped me a lot in selecting the G3X. If you want to see it's video in action I've got some videos up on my channel! Subbed!
Why is this not a good vlog camera? I wanted the gx7 mark 2 but no mic input kills it for me . . Your reply will be appreciated thank you .
+TubeNoob awesome . Thank you for this great information.... this helps .
hello... i have a second hand g3x and when i used to zoom the motor is squeking like an iron squeking... does your g3x make that kind of sound either?
thanks for the reply... :,)
Hey, Daniel B.! No. Definitely not. Maybe there's something stuck inside the lens barrel....wish I had better news. Greetings:)
Hi, excellent video and what I was looking for. Which camera would be like this one (fixed lens, minimum 10X zoom, But With Better Video AF? Do you find the glass quality is not being taken into consideration but actually does help for better autofocus during video? Very much interested into this topic as I want to film rugby matches and present something that will be presentable, like a camcord when filming sports... i´m trying to find the camera that doesn´t long for a camcord video quality wise.
lowlight condition
Dude I visited mediamarkt today again... holding this camera is a great feeling:) did u keep it? Do you use it still?
Damn UA-cam it shows me I am unsubbed to you! Subbing again!
Well come nighttime it's always difficut, except if you wanna go A7SII, but then again the AF system isn't good, A7RII has fantastic AF, but not the great lowlight performance...of course the price of both systems is ridiculously high at the moment:) Always nice to react to the comments:)
I am from the south of germany - near Stuttgart. Greetings!
TubeNoob it is cool you do and maybe next time u pop by gimme a shout ;) servus noch a mol and looking forward to the next video!
Hey I am from India and couldn't really choose between g7x and g3x .thanks for an awesome review 😊👌
Great if I could be of any help, Nebi! Greetings from Germany:)
I love mine, apart from the focus hunting when in video (check my channel clip) found it's far more accurate in one shot and not multi-point, cheers.
Thanks for the valuable comment! That's an important tip! I'll test it and will propably do a little video on that:) I love that thing too:) It's just a cool camera. And I really liked the wildlife footage at 600mm!
Hello
Should I buy This Camera In 2018 ?
Depends on what you want to do with it? Are you a vlogger? An interviewer? Do you shoot wildlife? What are your interests?
I got this camera for 700usd with a efv. Would u call that a good deal, as right now?
If it's used, yeah:) It it's new **** YEAH! :)
It is also very easy to use when filming make-up videos and you need good and fast zoom-in :)
Hey PARadi MODI! Nice Channel you go there, you know your craft for sure....you got a very professional look to your videos. Much respect! Keep it up!
Thank you very much! I think your videos are great, and I liked the vlogging video the best. It was very interesting to see a glimpse of your day and Germany :)
I usually use Canon 70D, but I had G3 X for testing for a few weeks and I liked it, because it was so hassle free. Now I have a dilemma which one should I buy, because 70D I use is my fathers and it is difficult to borrow it all the time :D
I like the features in 70D, but I'm not sure if I am enough pro to get it, because really I'm just a blogger.
The G3X is a great camera for sure, but for your kind of videos the 70D with any kind of STM zoom lens, the 18 135 is especially silent in video mode, is propably the best fit all around for the very reasons you already named. plus now that the 80D is out the price point of the 70D dropped a little:)
Nikon and panasonic don't have the great video autofocus performance, in that department there's some fujis that are pretty good, but then again they lack the tilt-svivel screen. sonys are pretty good in the Video AF department, but tend to overheat if you have a lot of long takes, except if you go prosumer level like a7rII, but that's too much money imho...don't use the g7x! the focusing of that little thing can be totally off or drifting, depending on how much contrast the image has....for good video autofocus performance check the specs for "on sensor phase detect" and the more "phase detect auto focus points" the better the video AF performance.
And it seems to me YOU ARE enough pro to get it:)
Wow, excellent review!
Thanks, man! I appreciate it!
Perfect video! Thx TubeNoob
Glad you enjoyed it:) Thank you for the nice comment!
I still prefer my old Canon G1X, excellent image and build quality even for these days.
Got a question about video recording. Can you record with a flat color profile like sLog on Sony cameras?
Hey, louman-eightyfour! You can play around with picture profiles and it comes with a neutral profile, but it's nowhere near a sony sLog. Greetings!
How long it can record? It has any record limit?
29:59min is the rec limit I believe.
What happened to this beast? I hope you didn't sell it, I'm looking to make this my next toy.
The beast is right here where it belongs! Going head to head with the eos m3 for a future video:)
The video I have been waiting for.
I have shot about 80% of the needed footage! Next weekend you'll get the comparison:) Greetings!
great review my friend
Great review, thanks !!
You*re welcome, Ron W! Thanks for the nice comment!
hi
?what is the best vlogging camera canon g7,g5,g3
Hey, Muneer Lyati!
Are you talking about the X-Series? I guess you are....
That's a tough question...depends on what you prefer...if you prefer a small form factor the g7x or g5x.....if you definitely want audio, then g3x.....for vlogging my recommendation among those cameras would propably be the g5x:
The G3X is pretty bulky if you only use it for vlogging.....and the g7x has no external audio, no hotshoe, no tilt svivel screen...
(I have to come up with a mic hack for the g3x one of these days.....:)
Hope that helps you out:) Greetings!
Thanks that very helpful I will buy g3x and the mic .. I am think for eos m5 too but that over my budget .
Yeah ...the price point on that one is too high for sure......in the back of your head keep the eos m6, the siccessor to the eos m3.....Greetings!:)
Great Video
Thanks,man! Apreciated! Greetings!
Exellent!
Thanks a lot, Semleges Térfél! Glad you enjoyed it:)
if i use Rode VideoMicro with G3x... i know the screen will be blocked but still the screen will be fully tilting upwards or does the external microphone doesn't let the screen to be tilt fully?? help bro!
Hello, Arsalan:) With the little adapter in between the mic and the camera, the screen will tilt fully upright, but with the mic only the base of the mic prevents the screen from tilting to a full 180 degrees. Greetings!
Oh Alright. Thanks a lot bro :)
Just ask if you have more questions:)
Greetings!
TubeNoob Well, Thank You So Much for Replying and giving me Your Precious Time. Few More Questions I want to ask then I'll be done. (:
p.s: subscribed 😉
Good video
You need a better mic or reduce that annoying background din.
Great review, far too overrated mate!
Thanks for the comment! Do you mean "underrated", or that is's actually worse than it's rep?
Yea sorry I was kinda drown into your video so that I wrote that comment kinda brain afk. Indeed, you're way to underrated! You shall rise one day. Hope so.
Oh you were talking about me! I thought you were talking about the camera:)!!
In that case: Wow that's the finest compliment I have ever recieved, man! You're in my eternal cool book, dude! Thank you so much!
