I owned a business there for nearly 20 years. I watched this clip just to see if my business would get a mention, but it didnt. It was on the last bits of your clip where the gully goes. See if you can recall it
@@balramdass-q9b I will visit stone cross again soon I dont recall the name of the business so if you could name it i will certainly mention it, many thanks
@@balramdass-q9b Thanks for that I will certainly give it a mention, not sure when im next up there but definitely before this year is out, thanks again for your support
My mom used to take me to Stone Cross. There was a laundrette, and I had some Tiger Tots, to keep me quiet. There was a bingo hall and my mom went every Thursday. Hoping to get her fortune.
Worst thing about stone cross is not being able to park. The parking problem is caused mainly by people going to Greggs and then sitting in their cars for half hour while they eat their food. I use the term food lightly.
My treat on Saturday dinner time was to go with my Dad into stone cross pub and be treated to a cheese and onion cob, whole my Dad a few pints with his mates.
In 2010 i rented a flat in the building covered with scaffolding. It was called The Heights. Beautiful apartments but very overpriced, the corridors smelt of drugs, the fire alarm was constantly going off. On one occasion the fire brigade told me that no one should be living in these apartments as the building hadn't had safety checks done on it.
These modern flats aint all what they seem especially when you also have to factor in these overpriced maintenance fees plus there's generally a management committee who spy on their residents so they dont break any rules. Appreciate the comment
@@awalkwithphil Any chance you could film the Hamstead Road in Hamstead village. I used to live in the bus lane by the Old Walsall Road until the mid 80s
Hi Phil, another interesting video and a shapshot into one-time familiar territory for me. Attwell's optician has been on the Stone Cross since I was a child, the location of the store has changed, Dennis Attwell used to be at the intersection of Walsall Rd and Hall Green Rd. It is a busy area because it's a major traffic artery leading from Walsall to West Bromwich. Your comments are a bit confusing - don't understand why you think Stone Cross residents wouldn't need a barber (Turkish or otherwise) or beauty salon - unsure what you could be implying. Stone Cross isn't a town within W. Bromwich, it's a subdivision of the town of West Bromwich. The reason that there are multiple shops selling similar products is a response to the market (supply and demand). They wouldn't be there if they didn't have a customer base - simple commerce. I'm not sure why you think the area is depressing, it looks like many of the shops are in use and not boarded up, which is good for the local economy, and the development of housing is a good thing, addressing a need, replacing the eyesore of a dilapidated movie theatre. Bookies are a community hub for some, sharing the excitement of watching a race together, much like the off track betting restaurants in the US. Just because we don't partake doesn't mean that we should realise the value they have for others, who may not see a soul if it wasn't for their visit to place a bet. I've seen a lot of the UK that is not nearly as respectable looking as it was when I was younger, but the Stone Cross, doesn't look much different to me except for some different vendors. It was never very busy, it's really just a larger selection of corner shops as it always was. If you really want to see depressing, take a walk along Carrington Rd, that used ot be a lovely boulevard, now everyone is parking on the sidewalk and the shops, most of the knocked down. That used to be a pretty row of shops with a nice grassy treed spot out front where people would sit chatting on the bench. You've told us of the places you wouldn't want to live, but what parts of W. Bromwich do you consider to be the better parts to live? What part do you live in, and have you always lived there?
Everywhere you go it's all horrible new builds, people just pave over front gardens no one takes pride anymore, yes everywhere you go it's the same type of shops, round the same type of people
Stone Cross has gone downhill a lot…And changed a lot… It’s mainly low quality fast food outlets today dodgy barbers and nail shops It was a good place to grow up in the 80s had good public transport links. At night it has a different feel not good and has suffered serious criminal activity as like many areas today
@@awalkwithphil Well the nail bars .. barbers..etc seem to be doing well 😉 It’s funny they’re mostly empty… but would show a healthy turnover on their accounts. Seems certain criminality is confounded by councils and police….. Wonder why ?🤔

Hi Phil the stone Cross pub used to have a Gentleman only room enjoyed the walk around Stone Cross
Thanks for the info Paul
How many fast food places does the area need. We need a fruit and veg shop up there.
Agreed!!!

I had to park near the library when I filmed that day. Many thanks
How about about the 200 spaces on the social club??
My treat on Saturday dinner time was to go with my Dad into stone cross pub and be treated to a cheese and onion cob, whole my Dad a few pints with his mates.
Not many pubs now have those wonderful cheese and onion cobs on the counter, but then again there are not many pubs!! many thanks for that memory

i worked at Stone Cross in the early 70's at Midland Bank - great times, but i don't recognise anywhere from the walkaround.
Many people who have left the area of West Brom from the 70's now find many places unrecognisable and not always for the better!!

What can I say? Decline is seen everywhere but certain places really do have that feel of neglect, such a shame really.
These towns must implement some kind of cap on the amount of these types of shops that can be allowed to operate
