- This week we will be sharing our Green Tea Soap DIY video tutorial. You can find the Green Tea Soap Recipe in the description under the video if you want to make your own version. Green Tea is full of natural antioxidants and used widely in the cosmetics and skincare business but at Soap School, we like to use the dried green tea leaves as a visual and textural element of the soap too so we will be using it as an infused herbal tea and in leaf form. We will be using the cold process soap making method to create our green tea soap DIY with you today.
We will be using green tea from regular tea bags but you can also use loose tea if you prefer. One of the tea bags is used to create an infusion in the water before being cooled to make the lye solution. The remaining green tea is added when the soap comes to trace as it adds a gorgeous speckle and visual aspect to your soap as well as its natural properties. We have used a cosmetic grade pigment to enhance the colour but this can be left out if you prefer just the tea being the main colourant in your green tea soap.
GREEN TEA SOAP DIY RECIPE
200g Olive Oil
200g Rice Bran Oil
300g Coconut Oil
300g RSPO Palm Oil
143g Sodium Hydroxide
320g Distilled Water
2 x Green Tea tea bags (infuse one into your water and add the leaves from the other one at trace)
30g Peppermint Essential Oil
0.5g Chromium Green Oxide (optional)
2g Titanium Dioxide (optional)
The recipe is for those who are already making soap. If you are not familiar with soap making, please research the steps fully before undertaking at home and always ensure safety equipment is used. Soap making is incredible fun but your safety is the most important thing.

Coffee in the morning. Sweet
iced tea with meals. Thank you for a great video. ❤
I really like the discoloration on the top. It add interest to the soap. Love it.
Thanks JoAnn :)
I'm not a tea drinker but coffee is my go to in the morning. Thank you very much and God Bless.
I love the way the soap looks and the green oxide with a touch of TD is really a wonderful color. When I use botanicals in my soap essential oils just seem to belong and I have used green tea but not as often as I could or should. I always love the speckled bits in the soap, it looks so earthy. I like tea occasionally but I drink coffee more. It is always so good to see you Sarah.
Hiya Renee, always so lovely to see you my friend x . Your soaps are always delicious and I love your ingredient combos
@@SoapSchoolUK Aw thanks. How are you?
@@soapsforlove4168 I'm OK, currently feeling good. Still bouncing in and out of viruses but maybe it will all go in the spring. Looking forward to 1st march :)
So sorry about that. Look into elderberry and the benefits of that. I haven't had a cold or flu in 6+ years.
@@soapsforlove4168 Haven't tried elderberry but I have been going through lots of jars of honey :) . Stay well Renee
I love your videos, you have such amazing personality and you are wonderful teacher :)
"Everyone needs a Shaun in their life." ☘ ty for all the wisdoms. 💚
Loving the green speckled look.
I drink both. I drink more coffee in the warmer months and drink more tea during the rainy season when it usually pours 24/7 for two to four weeks.
Yikes that is a lot of rain!
Love coffee and matcha tea , both are part of my day 😅, love the soap , thank u 😊
Me too!!
I love using tea in my soap. I’ve made it today with crushed cucumber and hibiscus tea…and I finished it off with a bit of camomile ess. oil.
You are the best
Well thanks so much
I loved your soap recipe and what if I use mint powder also
Thanks for the recipe given.. would like to try it today :)
Hope you enjoy it :)
Really impressive.
I love this !
Woohoo so glad you enjoyed it :)
I always drink Yorkshire tea, I don’t really like coffee, love your green tea soap, and the speckles just adds a bit more decorative charm, thankyou for sharing xx
Good old Yorkshire Tea! So glad you enjoyed it Carole :)
I drink tea and coffee. Just depends on my mood. But I have a ton of tea! 🙂 This was a really pretty soap!
Thanks Samantha, looking forward to hearing what you make with yours :)
This soap is gorgeous! I have been wanting to make a good facial bar for myself using green tea, and I wanted to see how others use green tea. I might leave out the little specs, because I'm going for a smooth look. I might also lighten the color more and swirl it with charcoal, for extra benefits.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
❤️ love it x
Claire So glad you like it 😀
Hello
Thank you for another great video. I drink both, but more tea. Just subscribed to your channel
Great to have you join us, thanks for the sub :)
I'm enjoying your channel! I didn't see this asked in the comments, if I want to substitute an oil for Palm oil, what would you suggest? I know it has to be recalculated in soapcalc, which I'm still very new to!
Hi Mary. Thanks for subscribing, it's lovely having you with us! There is no single oil substitute, the whole recipe generally changes for palm-free recipes but you can make this up with any of your favourite PF recipes. We have lots of recipes that are PF too but lots of other great ones on YT too. The palm gives you the firmness and stability in the bar and is generally recreated in a PF formulation by using large amounts of shea and cocoa butter and by changing the liquid content to make sure it isn't too soft
@@SoapSchoolUK Oh I see, thanks for explaining that, this is what I am trying to learn about why different oils are used. I have a good supply of the other oils so thought I'd stick to recipes with them, but your bars do look nice!
@@marymcandrew7667 You will love soapmaking. You can add the cucumber etc into your own recipe easily. It just switches out for part of your water amount so you can still enjoy it :)
How much tea did you add to the lye solution
Hi, If you pop to the description text under the video it has the full recipe including the water amount and the tea bags we used to infuse :)
@@SoapSchoolUK I actually made some with a peach tea recipe I entered into soapcalc and it turned out pretty thanks to you. I love my new bars that you inspired
@@Latherinlovefamily Congrats, sounds so lovely!
New subscriber. ❤👍❤
Welcome :)
Just finished doing this soap. Traced fast and looks great. I used spirulina and clay instead of the TD and pigment. Let's see how it comes out!! I'm a half by half drinker: coffee until afternoon then tea
Fantastic. Hope it comes out really nicely for you
@@SoapSchoolUK It came out perfect!! Your recipe here is amazing, thank you so much!! the scent is really something too, easy to cut and un-mould, a dream!
@@leapoffaithtarot4624 yay that’s fantastic. So glad you like it 😀
Can u please suggest rooibos soap recipe without using lye..I prefer using olive or coconut oil
Thanks I love its xxx
joyce-love Silville thanks so much 🙏
Love this soap, and I like the soap molds, where it is? thanks for sharing!!
What if you dont have Rice oil? What's a Substitute?
You could use the green tea in a totally different soap recipe if you prefer or use a different oil and recalculate your lye amounts with a sap calculator
Do u have to store where I can purchase your soaps & hope fully more.
Is it possible for me to infuse the tea powder in hot water and used the tea and the powder as well after infusing
Yes you can use the powder :)
What is the shelf life of the soap after you add the tea?
Hi Erika, the tea does not alter the shelf life of the soap
Thanks for this great video and recipe! I'm new to soapmaking and was looking to see how to add green tea-you answered all my questions. :) But what did you spray on the uncured soap? And why?
I like both
Thanks Alicia :)
Beautiful green soap! I like both tea and coffee. I mostly prefer fruity teas and black coffee with a bit of cream.
I made black tea soap once. I'm going to make it again but change some things. I was curious if your bar was scratchy at all? My tea soap was a bit scratchy. Maybe I added too many tea leaves.
-Shonna
I prefer coffee. I do drink green tea and matcha and sometimes barley tea.
OOOh I have never tried barley tea. Thanks for that :)
Soap School I get ours at an Asian market. I forgot to mention hibiscus tea is good too.
Hello Sara . Do you remember me?I was your student from Tanzania Vicky I LOVE IT.
Hi Vicky, it's great to hear from you again!
Thank you so much for sharing your hobby with us! I Love to drink tea to come to a clear mind, sometimes ☺️ So I also would like to make a tea soap in future. Is it possible to smell the scent of tea after a few weeks in your soap or do you smell the peppermint scent only? Thank you and greetings from south Germany. ❤️🍵
Do you take online classes
Me from India
Hi Shallu, We have a range of online courses on ur website : soapschool.com/online-courses
Hello! What if I use only Olive, Coconut, and Castor Oil, what will be the measurement? Thank you!
@Angela SP
If you visit soapcalc.net you can input the oils and percentages you want to use and it will calculate everything for you, including water amount and lye amount.
I don't recommend going higher than 30% on the Coconut Oil, and not higher than 10% on Castor Oil. Just remember, with the large amount of Olive Oil, it will need to Cure for longer than 4-6 weeks (closer to 4-6 months). Recipes with a large amount of Liquid Oils take longer to Cure.
@@khione8044 Thankkkk you so much. See, I know how to use the calculator, but I don't really understand it, to be honest! Your 2nd paragraph explains well! ❤❤
@@iamstonesteel You're welcome! I know the Soap Calc took me a while to understand as well. I suggest to 1st start out just worrying about the oil amounts, water amount, and lye amounts. As you use the Calculator it will start to become more easier for you.
After you become more familiar with the Soapmaking, then I would look into the Acid Profiles (if you look into it too soon, it is very confusing. Wait until you understand the rest). The Acid content of each oil/fat/butter is what determines all the #'s on the lower left side of the calculator.
The most important part to consider of the Acid Chart when just starting out, would be the Linoleic and Linolenic Acids. These Acids take the longest to Saponify from the Lye, so are usually what makes up the Superfat (if you use the CP Method), and usually is the leading cause of DOS issues if the #'s get too high. You want to make sure and keep the combined total of both those #'s (Linoleic+Linolenic) under 15 to help avoid DOS.
I made my green tea soap with Japanese mocha tea powder, that’s easier but the green color isn’t too bright
That's fantastic - well done! In my recipe I used chromium green oxide mixed with a little titanium dioxide to make it more green :)
i prefer hot(? tea, speacially chamomile and red tea
but i also drink a lot of coffee when im studying haha
I drink unsweetened iced tea. Occasionally I will drink hot tea.
It must be lovely being in a warm climate. Most drinks here are hot lol
