  • Non readers need auditory practice in separating and blending together parts of words. We covered dividing words into syllables. Today we will be talking about how to divide syllables. Because it is more relatable and therefore easier to understand we will be working with words that are single syllables. There are two ways to divide syllables 1) body and coda 2) onset and rime. Educators suggest that diving a syllable into body and coda is an easier skill than diving by onset and rime. The vowel is in the second part of the division with onset and rime. It is easy to distort the onset because it has no vowel and we tend to want to give it one. Dividing the word cat into onset and rime would be /c/-/at/. The temptation is to say /ca/-/at/, which of course is incorrect. Even us teachers have trouble not adding an extra sound. Click here for a video on single sounds. So, we start non readers out diving single syllable words by body and coda which for the word cat would be: /ca/-/t/. To clarify, the body is the vowel and everything that comes before it; the coda is anything that comes after the vowel.
*Sorry for the jar in the shot! :(
