Good Lord, this was done live, and I think it may very well be the finest version of this song ever recorded, the harmony is flawless. Susanne Cox has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
It's actually more like triple tracking, which is even more amazing. They are all singing the same parts - it's just that they somehow found aural space to distinguish between their voices. Really, really fantastic singing.
Also, I dunno how anyone can hear these two singing together and not realize Alison learned her style from Suzanne. They do the same vocal vibrato. It's so beautiful.
Included in the DVD Concert Album "Down from the Mountain" (2001), a concert celebrating and inclusive of the many Bluegrass voices and instrumentals in the movie, "Oh Brother Where art Thou?" (2000), "Down from the Mountain" was my belated introduction to American Bluegrass. Of all the performances, and all were memorable, this particular performance moved me then, and continues to connect with me today.
That's the alison krauss i remembered.. we were both teenagers, both travelling weekly for years, doing what we loved and whatever we had to cutting a path through this world. So proud of her... and amazed at how life and love come back.
Sydney Cox's playing was really sweet during that solo break. That's Adam Steffey in the back on mandolin that we never really get a look at, I'm sure.
Loved this song when I heard Linda Rondstadt do it on an album many years ago. These 3 ladies more than cover it here....wish I could find more of Suzanne's recordings.
Ok correct me if I am wrong, but if I remember right the Cox Family found Alison when she was a 14 year old champion fiddler. She joined their band as their fiddler. She didn't even sing before that and they encouraged her to start singing. Only to discover the amazing vocal instrument she possesses.
I first heard this song by Andy Tielmann - his voice and range were exceptional (Roy Orbison could not compare - no soul). Then I heard this version and adored the harmonies and musicality. The winner, by far, for this particular song.
I've had this song on my computer for a long time. Got it a few years ago from Napster. Great version of a super song. Thanks so much for posting this gem.
As far as I know she started playing with John Pennell's band Silver rails whom she met at 12, joined a band called Classified Grass some time later with whom she was playing when Rounder signed her at 14. And I do think she was singing round that time already. :)
This is the only rendition of this song I have ever considered to be on a par with Linda Ronstadt's and I haven't yet decided for certain but what it may even be a little better. Thank you so much for posting it and please, don't remove it. :-)
Please bear in mind mahk, that this was probably in the 80's and fashion has evolved since then. However, A. K would sound angelic supposing she wore a coal sack.
suzanne was such a darling...
THE COX FAMILY + ALISON KRAUSS = HEAVENLY VOCALS & ANGELIC MUSIC...CARRY ON ✌❤

It’s hard to argue against the original, but jeez this is better!
Also, I dunno how anyone can hear these two singing together and not realize Alison learned her style from Suzanne. They do the same vocal vibrato. It's so beautiful.
Amen and amen. That sweet vibrato of Suzanne Cox haunts me. How beautiful can a voice get? Good Lord is right.
Two of the most beautiful female voices in music, ever. Suzanne and Alison.
I say amen to that as well, Will B!
Thats not nice for the third woman involved !!
Beautiful, the three in perfect harmony. Love you AK.
Three of the most pitch perfect voices on the planet.
Apart from those angelic voices, listen to that Dobro
Oh my,Suzanne Cox has the voice of an angel.
Her sister isn't bad, either!
Just awesome, Susanne Cox fantastic voice, one of the best Blue Bayou rendition. Like it tremendously
Alison found the Cox Family and got them into Nashville and it's been a great up hill for them both. Incredible of course
All three have beautiful voices.
Suzanne Cox can stand toe to toe with Alison Krauss! That is awesome!
baycityblues1976 For a minute I thought that Suzanne was moving her lips and Allison was singing.
@@killerseddie8295 Harmony, perfect harmony. Voices of these three ladies, awesome and perfected.
Thank the three of you.
Love you all.
It is a testament to Ronstadt. Her vocal vibe if not her powerful heartbreak is exactly where this comes from.
Their harmony gives me shivers......awesome!
I'm so in love with Suzanne and her Angelic voice.
me too
@@bisonsgames me too!!
Me too
It's always great to hear Alison and Viktor together.
This is by far the best rendition of this song EVER...
If dont make the hairs on the back of your stand up then you must be made out of stone..Stunning tight harmony..angelic.

I bet that was a beautiful time in your life, love the Cox's, Alison is very special ❤️
Alison and Suzanne sound alike. It is awesome harmony
Sydney Cox's playing was really sweet during that solo break. That's Adam Steffey in the back on mandolin that we never really get a look at, I'm sure.
This gives me chill bumps.
Absolutely beautiful! Two of the prettiest voices in bluegrass. I love it. : )
Two of the greatest voices right there.

What a beautiful version. I love Viktor's bass on this.
This is one of my favorites ❤
Beautiful song I don't care who you are.
Loved this song when I heard Linda Rondstadt do it on an album many years ago. These 3 ladies more than cover it here....wish I could find more of Suzanne's recordings.
This one makes the list of covers that are better than the original.
Wow, I'm not a bluegrass fan, but that was sublime.
Simply awesome.... the harmonies are just so tight.
Willard once said after introducing his family, that he held the papers on all of ‘em...he sure did a great job raising up such a musical bunch
beautiful
That is smoother than melted caramel.
Just gorgeous. 'Scuse me...I seem to have something in my eye...

TRUE
Allison said she loved their music and found them. She was at a musical festival and knocked on all the trailers until she found them ha ha
Seamless harmonies, stellar backup from Viktor Krauss (bass) with great Dobro and Guitar, too.
That was awesome!!
it don't get any better

Suzanne puede hacer llorar a las piedras..
Love the Cox's, great songs; great harmonies and great instrument versatility! Thank you for sharing. Subbed you
Beautiful.
We all goin back to our blue bayou some day …
@joeybb1 a reply 2 years later...lol That is Viktor Kraus (Alison's brother). Played for years with Lyle Lovett (among others).
Very, very pretty, girls! Tnx for posting.

Roy Orbison? No soul? You can't be serious.

Alison is awesome and Suzanne is second in my book
Evan Gelist. Sorry Suzzane better
They can stand shoulder to shoulder with their voices and range.
@trakovskyfilm Amen to that!!!
That looks like Alison's brother, Viktor. He's a very accomplished bass player.
No. That's Suzanne Cox and at least a few weeks ago she was alive and well, singing this very song brilliantly at the Grand Ole Opry! ( June 2009)
🙏
That's Alison's brother Viktor playing bass
Yep
This is the only rendition of this song I have ever considered to be on a par with Linda Ronstadt's and I haven't yet decided for certain but what it may even be a little better.

Agree. Fashion does not change her voice. She is beautiful and has a beautiful voice.
And I think gatorband is right. At least CMT site also states their career got a big boost when Alison Krauss met them in the early 90-ies.
Suzanne Cox... no equal yet. 2020
2023 still not yet
susanne cox needs to go solo! she can hit those high notes
Perhaps she enjoys singing with her family?
sorry, I meant the second line "where those fishing boats...." which is higher then the first line.
