We meet our first protagonist, Terra, who is capable of using magic naturally, while it is implied that a combination of magic and technology: Magitek, has to be used by everyone else. That even magitek-equipped soldiers are scared of her, implying she is more powerful than first appearances would suggest. That she is enslaved to the aforementioned empire by magic, unable to act of her own free will. And that we have our first McGuffin, a briefly mentioned "demon" or Esper, frozen and hidden in a remote village, which the empire has discovered through spy work, and now seeks to claim for itself. a lot of newer writers, especially japanese ones grew up in the school of light novels and anime, where in medias res and "wow the audience with ambiguity" is the name of the game. if you notice older japanese works and even newer ones that are of an old-school-vein still know how to properly set-up stories. newer ones start with an action sequence, relies on japanese tropes and stereotypes for the audience to pick up on, and then relies on something mysterious like a supposedly important hooded/masked figure to intrigue the audience. it's reliance on stereotypes in place of proper set-up and the complacency that you can always subvert those stereotypes later on if you need "character development."

This game. My favorite Final Fantasy. My favorite game of all time. A masterpiece and yet rarely spoken as such. From the limits of the software they made this opening. They wrote amazing storylines. Thats right plural. in a single game they didn't over do themselves but they did more than enough. Most games now usually follow one character. They had the stones to split away from the MC and actually build a world. Multiple characters. Multiple ways you could play. Sure you had to play them all but the fact they actually had you play every character. It was amazing. It allowed for telling a complete story instead of a small amount. I said it once I will say it again. This is my favorite game of all time.
Even though I played VII, VIII and IX before VI, I still think this is the greatest opening to any Final Fantasy ever. It's cool how sometimes the sheer awesomeness of something just beats the nostalgic feelings you have for the first ones you played.
I played final fantasy 12 before any other final fantasy game and it was my absolute favorite ..... Until I booted final fantasy 6 . The intro alone changed my mind
Love this opening, and the music really syncs up well with what's happening on the screen. (Anyone else notice the sample of the Floating Continent music when it talks about mankind repeating the mistake?) To me, this opening is a great example of cinematography in games.

I hope it never happens simply due to the fact that they would never stay true to the original game. The story, setting, mood, feels. They would ruin one of them and bring most of the rest down in the wake of that.
I've played the game for the first time 20 years after its release. And despite the great improvement in sound quality and orchestra kinda of music we were getting, this stroke me as one of the best track I've ever heard in a video game.
Something I found appealing about this game is that it had so many characters, most of them with their own story, and each of them were interesting. Except maybe Umaro, all he does is just yell but then again, he is a Yeti.
Sometimes snow storms hit the city which causes traffic to claw. In those cases I sometimes get off the bus as it is sometimes faster to walk. As Im walking through the snow it's heavy on my boots but I know I must persevere to get home. In my head, sometimes I remember this scene with the music thinking how those 3 probably felt dread but also hope that eventually their journey through the thick and snow will eventually come to an end.
They don't make games like anymore... today, its all about which female character wears the least and who has the biggest boobs. FFVI will always be the best in my books. Its something not everyone can understand. This game has no voice over or 3d graphics but the dialog (just text), cutscenes, music and sprites are able to manifest all the colorful and distinct personalities of the characters... I still cherish every bit of this masterpiece. I played it about 6 times during the 90s to get all the hidden outcomes. My fav part especially was Shadow's Nightmare.. Never saw that one coming.. RIP SquareSoft
You sound just like me. Shadows bits always captivated me. He had a few nightmares if I recall depending on where he slept. I got every character to level 99 because why not... I loved that game.
You're an idiot if you think that's what games are today. Who gives a fuck what characters wear?? I don't know if you're being shallow or just another feminazi idiot hating on pixels. The problem with gaming today goes MUCH deeper since gaming is no longer seen as an art form or story telling device but as a SERVICE designed as a business model with direct access to your wallet and minimal creative integrity. So no I don't give a fuck if a female character is swinging her tits around if that was the creative vision behind the game or the artist's intent. I have an issue with corporations injecting their greed into games and idiots like you injecting politics, both destroying creative freedom to push their respective agendas.
The march to Narshe music is so unbelievably beatiful that I have no words for it. I really have tears in my eyes every time I hear it. The Japanese RPG's of the 1990's were mostly masterpieces.
My sister os 12 years younger than me and she always developed a taste on gaming since a very young age. One day she ordered Final Fantasy XV for the PS4 and I was like "That's cool, but have you played the best of the FF games?". She never heard of VI and it blew my mind. Told her that she just HAD to try it out. A few weeks later she told me it was one of the most magical experiences she ever felt, This is undoubtly the best videogame ever made. Pure piece of art, gameplay, storytelling, emotional attachment to the characters, soundtrack. Its the Mona Lisa of Gaming and should be passed unto further generations.
I agree! I remember playing this as a kid, during the short time I had a TV in my own room, starting it up at night for the first time ever...and listening in complete awe. :)
The story telling, the characters, the villain, the music, basically everything in this game was great and memorable, its a masterpiece on my opinion and you should play it..
Recuerdo mis inicios en final fantasy y como cuando después de terminar el V llegué a este, cuando escuché este soundtrack simplemente quedé encantando y emocionado ♥️
I will never forget that intro song when they're walking in the snowfield. All time favorite final fantasy, and favorite song from the series. thanks for posting!
I just started playing this game this month because of everything I heard about it and this game is amazing and still holds up today. The characters, the story and the music really are amazing works of art. I really wish to the gaming industry would go backwards and make games like this instead of focusing on great graphics
The moment my Eldest brother and I popped this into our SNES, the clouds and lightning, and we saw all this and of the 3 Mechs. We were in the most awe and amazement! It couldn't have gotten any better!
The music and way the story is presented... its breathtaking. It was like whispering to you "I hope you're strapped in for a ride. Because you are about to experience something you have never experienced before". Without a doubt the best FF. Haunting, beautiful, tragic and dare I say... perfect.
I've played a lot of games, both PC and console, and this remains, to this day, one of the best opening credits sequences I've ever seen. You don't even need a montage of different scenes, all you need is that chilling image of the mechs trudging through the snow.
One of the best videogames of all time. Amazing soundtrack and atmosphere for the time. Story and gameplay were state of the art. I still play this game through every year or 2 along with chrono trigger. Beautiful and i have them on original and emulated so it can never be taken from me
This is an amazing game that still is great to play. Give me game play, with a controller that works, and I'm happy. None of the Final Fantasy games after 9 were even in that ballpark.
FF6 is very cinematic! The dramatic organ in the title screen, the narration about the Magi war, the narration on the character introductions, and of course the iconic march to Narshe. All so timeless. The directors must have been inspired by film.
I’m curious of your thought two weeks later. I clearly recall how I felt first seeing the intro and how I felt upon completing the game, and it’s exciting to think of someone experiencing it for the first time
It really is absolutely different than the previous five, not just in the overall gameplay improvement and story, but a complete change in atmosphere to present a darker story than the typical save the crystals plot the previous games had before this one. Just this opening alone proves that
When I was younger, I didn't know much or care about Final Fantasy. But even as a bratty 10 year old, I knew this intro was iconic and needed to be respected. Chills man.
One reason why it's such an epic beginning is that Tetsuya Takahashi, creator of the Xeno franchise (Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade) was responsible for the opening. You see his credits at 4:05
FF6 normal fight = 5-6 seconds at best. FF7 normal fight = 30 seconds at best. Waste of my fucking time! Earthbound that shit up! You have a good list but without Tales of Phantasia it ain't complete.
My favourite opening was Final Fantasy 13. It blew my mind, with the music and the wide panorama giving great expectations from the game. Music was so good at the start that rest of music in that game couldn't compare to it.
That’s what I love about FF6. The intro is legendary, but it’s just a precursor to what’s ahead. There’s just no letdown for me. What an incredible game
it doesn't "sucks" but, the loadtimes are a bit on the downside, it changes some of the sounds too. for the better experience play the GBA or SNES, the ps1 load times can hinder the experience a bit.
This intro still sends chills down my spine

I hope it never happens simply due to the fact that they would never stay true to the original game. The story, setting, mood, feels. They would ruin one of them and bring most of the rest down in the wake of that.
No, they don't
with loot boxes! xD
You can hear this music anytime you mount up on the magitech armor in FFXIV. I recognized it immediately!
Those mechs walking is so simple yet this game makes it one of the coolest things ever
I've played the game for the first time 20 years after its release. And despite the great improvement in sound quality and orchestra kinda of music we were getting, this stroke me as one of the best track I've ever heard in a video game.
Oneiros
Something I found appealing about this game is that it had so many characters, most of them with their own story, and each of them were interesting. Except maybe Umaro, all he does is just yell but then again, he is a Yeti.
One of the most ominous and intimidating intros in the SNES library.
I absolutely love this game. The opening was grand
the theme that plays while the magitek soldiers and terra are walking to Narshe...
it's unique.
Such an amazing game! I can play this game over and over again. I'll never get tired of it. The feels I get from the music man. Beautiful!
3:40 why I would watch the whole intro
an absolute masterpiece. There are no games that compare to the old RPG style. 16-bit music sounds so incredibly good
man....I wish FF6 is a high budget tv series like game of thrones ;-;
Jeremy Jahns moment
nah, americans will put some stupid sex scenes for no reason and change every character race or gender

Dude I've never read anything that described that scene and what I felt so wonderfully.
Thank you!
im going to be playing this game for the first time at some point this year once i have finished with IX, im looking forward to it!
Very curious if you ended up playing it. I certainly hope so. Easily my favorite FF personally
For this affliction I'll prescribe one dose of the Witcher 3 and one dose of Torment: Numenera.

You mean you don't think FF6 would be better with loot boxes?
The march to Narshe music is so unbelievably beatiful that I have no words for it. I really have tears in my eyes every time I hear it. The Japanese RPG's of the 1990's were mostly masterpieces.
My sister os 12 years younger than me and she always developed a taste on gaming since a very young age. One day she ordered Final Fantasy XV for the PS4 and I was like "That's cool, but have you played the best of the FF games?". She never heard of VI and it blew my mind. Told her that she just HAD to try it out. A few weeks later she told me it was one of the most magical experiences she ever felt,
This is undoubtly the best videogame ever made. Pure piece of art, gameplay, storytelling, emotional attachment to the characters, soundtrack. Its the Mona Lisa of Gaming and should be passed unto further generations.
Well played.
Amen
I agree! I remember playing this as a kid, during the short time I had a TV in my own room, starting it up at night for the first time ever...and listening in complete awe. :)
The story telling, the characters, the villain, the music, basically everything in this game was great and memorable, its a masterpiece on my opinion and you should play it..
i remember this from my childhood, i played it in 1999. brings sweet tears to my eyes. seems so so long ago.
Nowadays developers can show us whatever they can imagine. It turns out that it was better instead for us to imagine alongside them.
Gosh that beginning gives me goose bumps, and reminds me of those late nights devouring this game! My favorite final fantasy for sure!
I just started playing this game this month because of everything I heard about it and this game is amazing and still holds up today.
The characters, the story and the music really are amazing works of art. I really wish to the gaming industry would go backwards and make games like this instead of focusing on great graphics
Nonuo uematsu yoo..is an AMAZING PERSON
This game is amazing... Why havent they made a remake for this masterpiece of a game by now...???
Because they decided to milk 7 again.

It's amazing what incredible music could be created with just 16 bit...
3:38 The Perfect moment it all starts....
Haunting, beautiful, tragic and dare I say... perfect.
The fact that this song is also part of the final battle theme.
This intro still brings tears to my eyes.

I've played a lot of games, both PC and console, and this remains, to this day, one of the best opening credits sequences I've ever seen. You don't even need a montage of different scenes, all you need is that chilling image of the mechs trudging through the snow.
Happy 20th birthday FFVI
One of the best videogames of all time. Amazing soundtrack and atmosphere for the time. Story and gameplay were state of the art. I still play this game through every year or 2 along with chrono trigger. Beautiful and i have them on original and emulated so it can never be taken from me
This is an amazing game that still is great to play. Give me game play, with a controller that works, and I'm happy. None of the Final Fantasy games after 9 were even in that ballpark.
I thought XII was great, but I have to agree with the rest.
ff9 sucks! LOL fang is the only good in ff13!
I usually play this to help me go to sleep at night. Very soothing
It has a name: "Terra's Theme" by Nobuo Uematsu.
That intro theme gives me goose bumps to this day.
Christmas 1994 - best Christmas ever...
and the following christmas we got chrono trigger!
FF6 is very cinematic! The dramatic organ in the title screen, the narration about the Magi war, the narration on the character introductions, and of course the iconic march to Narshe. All so timeless. The directors must have been inspired by film.
the beginning of a great adventure ^^
one of my favorite video game moments ever. simply stunning.
Playing through the entire series in order and just got here. This opening was an immediate departure from the last 5 and truly awesome.
I bought FFVI on Steam but I didn't know they removed all the pixel art... now it's all weird-looking 3D characters... kinda disappointed...
Some re-releases miss the point completely. That version is sadly one of those.
A bit late I know, but they have mods that fix the artwork back to the original art.
I just played through the first five final fantasy games and goddamn this is a huge improvement and I’ve only seen the opening cutscene so far
Just this opening alone proves that
Those team credits!
Truly a dream team.
chrono trigger also had an all-star cast. really. both of these teams were incredible.
I was 15. Game moments never forgotten.
whats that song at 3:40 ? i played this game almost 20 years ago. that song was what i remembered most for some reason.
"Terra's Theme".
thanks!
shannon darden
My pleasure.
ShiryuGL is it just me or the theme kinda resembles the theme of the good the bad and the ugly
*****
Kinda... unsure... is Nobuo-san a fan of Ennio Morricone, I wonder...?
When I was younger, I didn't know much or care about Final Fantasy. But even as a bratty 10 year old, I knew this intro was iconic and needed to be respected. Chills man.
Back when the majority of video games were developed with love not just greed.
in 1994 when people saw that credit scroll with the mechs walking in the snow with the mode 7 scrolling they must have been absolutely blown away
One reason why it's such an epic beginning is that Tetsuya Takahashi, creator of the Xeno franchise (Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade) was responsible for the opening. You see his credits at 4:05
Best RPG ever!
Honorable mentions:
Xenoblade
Xenosaga
Nier
Chronotrigger
xenogears
good music but xenogears and ff7 are way better!
FF6 normal fight = 5-6 seconds at best.
FF7 normal fight = 30 seconds at best. Waste of my fucking time! Earthbound that shit up!
You have a good list but without Tales of Phantasia it ain't complete.
And Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
I agree. Easily one of my top 3 favourite RPGs.
@İntihar İpi which fallout?
Pretty said when this intro is better than the new PR version's.
Just restarted this game the other day, the opening scene still gives me goosebumps when terra's theme kicks jn
Okai i never liked final fantasy, but this made me cry, it's beautiful, The snes version never came to europe but i'm getting the ps1 version now.
Don't, the PS1 version sucks, it's just the same game, but with horrible load times, just emulate the SNES version on your PC.
Emigdiosback what she means is the stupid fade when a battle happen, in the snes and gba, is more jumpy and spectacular, in ps1 is meh....
the ps1 was a fade because of loading times....
マシューセガファン94 The PSX version is good. Ignore the haters.
it doesn't "sucks" but, the loadtimes are a bit on the downside, it changes some of the sounds too. for the better experience play the GBA or SNES, the ps1 load times can hinder the experience a bit.
True art stands the test of time. The entrance of Final Fantasy 6 with Terra is so good.
Best FF ever
