    Great runthrough, as usual Rahdo - Thanks! I played the game twice earlier this week and found the rulebook so confusing that even with playthrough videos and BGG questions I was left infuriated by it and was thinking about selling it. However I gave it a third try and it suddenly all clicked into place. I've played it 6 times now and I'm totally addicted to it! - I even took it out to a meeting today and got there early to play a few rounds. I wish I'd had your playthrough earlier in the week! I've been meaning to do it for a while but I'm going over to Patreon right now to help keep you running!

    This looks like a great solo game. I like how compact it is and the flip mechanisms are really cool. Not convinced about the multiplayer versions but I think it's just that it is designed to be multiplayer over time

    Oh, man, thank you so much for this! I bought the game a few days ago on a whim and I loved the premise, the artwork is great, and I could tell it had some crafty mechanics. However, the rule book was so confusing (it needs a serious overhaul and reshuffling of information) that even with my SO and friend, we couldn't figure out how to play. Now I get it and it looks like so much fun!

      Ehr no, you have to shuffle after each "year"..

  • @tomatkisson722

    In normal/easy mode of the game you continue to go through the deck even after you reach the level 4 rest card. You still rest and reshuffle the deck and put the rest card at the bottom but you can continue until you run out of health. In hard mod if you don’t escape before you reach the 4 rest then you loose. I discovered this on the BBG forums for the game from one of the makers of the game.

    ~16:37, Tatianna isn't in the fan, so I don't think her special ability can be used to discover the treasure.

    • @PauloRenato23
      @PauloRenato23 6 років тому

      From the rules I can't say if he played correctly or not (they are terrible) but it makes sense in a thematic way to play like Richard did... the Maiden found a treasure (one of the cards in her fan when she was the Top card of the deck) and opened it

    • @vcapps9562
      @vcapps9562 6 років тому

      The other maiden cards, except Maraiana, are clear that their special ability is only used when they're in a fan. Tatianna's wording is not so clear. However, I found a response from the designer in the BGG forums: boardgamegeek.com/article/29936253#29936253 (see question 9).

    29:50 Couldn't use that shield to block the damage and avoid downgrading?

    • @anthonysutcliffe
      @anthonysutcliffe 6 років тому +2

      Yes he could have used the shield. Though really, he should only have taken the damage from Mrs Claus if he had failed to defeat the goblin in a fight. As he was running away, the damage icons in the fan don't do anything so he shouldn't have taken any damage. Paulo has clarified it in the Klingon channel.

    Excellent review! One Q. If you down grade and it flips to a side that shows a damage icon, do you have to find a heart to take care of the damage? Cause I flipped a heart over for that damage and got two more damage icons on that card. Looks like I would have to find two more addition hearts? Yikes!. (Cascading effect!)

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 років тому +2

      nope, you don't have to do what it says after the flip, until the next time you see the card in the deck

    Can you really use the diamonds to remove any unwanted item or health cards in your fan? Distracting an inanimate object didn't logically make sense to me so I've only been using the diamonds on captors. I do keep losing a lot though. lol

      In the instructions say cellar any one card in your Fan for each distract icon, so is bizarre but is correct

    I just bought the game, I like "Palm Island", the idea of holding the cards in one's hands is brilliant (more games like that should be created) -
    This one looked a tad tricky at first, but your video helped me a lot (moreover I'm French and I think the leaflet with the rules is not that clear IMHO)!
    Now I can play... and lose! but whatever, the point is to have fun!!! But why do all my assets cards always appear before the villains? 🤣(though I shuffle them well !)

  • @3nertia

    This game looks pretty awesome! Kind of wish it came in a plastic version >_>

    • @shiveringchihuahua
      @shiveringchihuahua 3 роки тому

      I totally agree. If you remove the paper insert from the box you can sleeve all the cards and they still fit in the box, but the sleeves tend to be a bit "sticky" so shuffling if a pain. I would really love to have matte plastic cards like Palm Island.

    17:55 "[Prince Charming] provides Charisma, but I don't" -- funny and, of course, untrue! ;)
    This game reminds me of "T.I.M.E. Stories" in that you have to cycle through the storyline/deck several times. I'd half suspected Friedemann Friese behind this game for its similarity to, e.g., "Freitag", but there was a different game you ran through a couple of weeks ago that had this "play it in one hand" style (can't think of the name right now), maybe this is from the same designer?
    I love the humour already (only halfway through the video)... hit the goblin with a jewel case... upgrade manicured fingernails to perfect nails AS A WEAPON :)
    Thrilled about this! Thanks for running through this game, rahdo.

    • @ChrischoBoardgaming
      @ChrischoBoardgaming 6 років тому

      Indeed, I meant "Friday", although I was sure rahdo had run through the German titled version as he often does. By no means I *compare* T.I.M.E. Stories to "Maiden's Quest" ("MQ"); I wrote that part of it *reminded* me of the game shown here.
      "Palm Island" was that other title (thank you!), where you had to rotate some cards in your hands which, at the time of watching it rahdo do, seemed a bit awkward and I'm glad Mr. Shannon (who's not the designer of MQ, I now know) did not incorporate this into his game. I know nothing of "Finished", I think, but it's hard to tell with all the games out there.
      With the exception of "Friday" I haven't had the chance to play any of these games, yet, but from my perspective (mostly solo to three players) MQ looks the most interesting, not the least because of its combination of humour and nice artwork. I'd have hated to see another game kiddy-fied with Munchkin-style illustrations...

    • @ChrischoBoardgaming
      @ChrischoBoardgaming 6 років тому

      As far as I remember, in "Friday" the cards rotate by 180 degrees on two different axes, not like in "Palm Island" ("PI") by 90 degrees, and somehow that seems to make an important difference to me. Although "fanning out" cards in the holding hand is quite common in card games, having them stick out at a right angle seems wonky (again talking about PI here).
      BTW, thanks for your comments. Often (as in this case), comments spark further examination of things relevant to me in my head. Often (as in this case), comments provide useful side information, making the original author's (rahdo) content even more valuable.

    • @ChrischoBoardgaming
      @ChrischoBoardgaming 6 років тому

      I don't know if Mr. Mietling (PI's designer) was the first to say "rotating cards is NOT always by 180 degrees", but if he was, he has to be congratulated for treading on unknown ground (*nagging voice: ...although it still seems wonky* ;) ). From the perspective of a game designer with zero finished games under his belt I'm interested in PI, too, especially for his(?) idea of making us hold cards differently. I wonder what people/game designers will come up with next -- hold the cards with the edges facing the player...? ;)

    Great little runthrough and game. Thanks for making the rules pretty clear, because reading through the rulebook was indeed a pain in the neck. The black background from your table is not Prince Charming (creates a lot of greyish-black pixels). Maybe some kind of mat could fix it. Greets

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 років тому

      i like this this is much easier to hold in your hand and tells an interesting story. i like that PI doesn't require you to memorize your deck (you're allowed to look through it to see upcoming card to make decisions).

      Based on the video, there's an armored attire that counts as a dress but the card art looks like it features a boob plate.

    A memory driven fumbly card game... meehh. Seems like it would play better if you layed the deck down and keep the cards “fanned” on the table. Too much memory for me...
