@@cristiaolson7327 The problem is most history courses don't focus on battles. The main ones to pay attention to are the same ones always portrayed in media: -Pearl Harbor -D-Day -Stalingrad They mostly focus on the overviews of why these wars happened vs how the armies and navies got to that point. Standardized testing practically has killed this possibility. I would 100% guarantee that interest in history would shoot up if it wasn't treated as "useless" or as a list of facts.

a thing i love about the music video is that at 7:42 you can see the turret falling out of its base which is a good attention to detail as warship turrets usually are just dropped into place in the boat and are held in by gravity
A tiny tidbit: the stencil where they (temporarily, I'm sure) rename the boat they're performing on: Primo Victoria is the name of their second album, which is their first album about military history. The first track is also called Primo Victoria.
Fun fact: fans been wanting a song about Bismarck, then a war game company asked the same. Sabaton put the 2 together and made the song as a single, the game company helped in making the video.
The video is done by Wargaming, the producer for World of Warships. As for why the Hood didn't feature more in the video, the song is about Bismarck, not Hood.
People are on about the Hood being the crosshairs at 2:40. It's not the Hood, it's a King George V class BB. I doubt it's HMS Prince of Wales, as PoW took off damaged as Hood was destroyed and sunk, which we hear in the radio at the beginning of the video. It makes more sense that this whole video takes place after the first battle and then goes to HMS King George V where we also see the Swordfishs.
Hey, thanks for checking it out. they did show the hood in the first engagement. it was the ship with an iconic gap in the midsections superstructure. you see the Hood in the video at 2:40 though they didn't show it sinking which is a shame. basically, you could spin a wheel to decide on your next Sabaton song cause almost all they sing about is military history, Screaming eagles, the Final Solution, or uprising, are songs that come to mind though.
Prinz Eugen was detached from Bismarck during the operation to raid Allied merchant shipping, but this was cut short due to engine troubles. Having survived the atomic blasts, Prinz Eugen was towed to Kwajalein Atoll, where she ultimately capsized and sank in December 1946.
The cruise of the Bismarck is one of the most insane and sad parts of the war. On the hood only three survived and on the Bismarck that number was only 115. Another great song about the event (more so the tragedy of it) is Nautical disaster by the Tragically hip
The Bismarck's death was also very long and drawn out. The Royal Navy was harassing Bismarck constantly with destroyers, leading to fatigue among the crew. By the time Bismarck was sunk, it wasn't much more than a hulk, burning from stem to stern, having nearly all its weapon systems knocked out. With almost the entire crew dead, there wasn't really anyone to run damage control or to attempt to continue fighting.
@@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ Damage Control? Why would they run damage control? They scuttled the ship. Otherwise it'd taken quite a while for the Bismarck to sink.

Accidentally got this one in my YT feed. The video that brought me to your channel and your first encounter with Sabaton! Almost 4 years ago! What a ride!
The first battle you watched was JUST after Hood had blown up. Bismarck and HMS Prince of Wales are exchanging fire. If you watch closely, the next shot of Bismarck shows that he is down by the bow. This is historically accurate because Prince of Wales scored a hit on Bismarck's fuel tanks in the bow. He was leaking oil and took on a few thousand tons of sea water.

the visuals are amazing. that from-behind-view of the swordfish with the bismarck not just filling but BEING the backdrop, tracers everywhere and that eeriely beautiful, soft staccato of the guns ablaze... gj, sabaton
My favorite detail is how young all the sailors were. We have a notion to imagine sailors as crusty old men like the admirals here, but the truth is they were often just boys who were drafted. Great respect to the history. Thats why I love Sabaton.
I play crusader kings and a fellow player suggested I give Sabaton a listen when I asked him what kind of music he listens to while playing. I checked out this video first because the music video preview looked neat. FELL IN LOVE. Sabaton is by far my favorite band and has made my love of history into something I'm passionate about again. Enjoyed your reaction, it brought back my memories of mine. :)
I learned more about history from Sabaton than I did in school. I think it's really great that the band doesn't just make music. She takes the time to explain everything and work on the historical facts. Especially her collaboration with Indy Neidell is really good. Which is really a good historian. The story behind "No Bullets Fly" brings tears to my eyes again and again.
Fun detail: The compass that the guide uses in the end is the same one that Lütjens or Lindemann hands the sailor while dying hinting to the guide being a relative to the sailor. :)
Sir, this is a part most missed. On 8:43 you can see the Bismarck’s bow submerged. The reason is why during the battle against Hood and Prince of Wales, a few hits from the Prince of Wales hit the Bismarck’s bow causing it to flood.
The guy at the start of video is son/grandson to that sailor who got that pocket compas from captain. There are coordinates of the ship at the moment they decided to sink the ship.
It was thought for 60 years that the Bismark being scuddled was just a German invention to make up for a defeat. Then expeditions to the Bismark's wreck revealed, astonishingly, that the British did not cause enough damage to sink him. They were only able to damage the superstructure. Neither the shell hits or the torpedoes did the behemoth in. It could only have been the Bismark's crew flooding him on purpose.
The visual damage isn't the only thing that confirms the scuttling. The expedition saw there was little to no crushing caused by water pressure. another indication that watertight doors and interior piping were opened.
There’s a video game called Atlantic Fleet (for iOS, Android, and PC). It pits the Royal Navy against the Kriegsmarine in turn-based combat. One mission has you replaying the Battle of the Denmark Straight. You can play for either side and change the outcome. The best part, though, is the dynamic Battle for Atlantic campaign, which adds a strategic layer. As the Brits, you have to defend supply convoys and either last until D-Day or sink enough German warships and u-boats to win. As Germans, you have to sink enough Allied shipping to cancel D-Day without losing too many ships and u-boats. Most ships are historically accurate, but the game does also include two battleship classes that never got built: Lion for Brits and H-39 for Germans.
the hood was already sunk by the time the song starts. You can hear the news of its destruction in the 40's style of radio news broadcast as the crew unloads their gear from the truck. The song covers the second half of Bismarck's voyage, the vengeful hunt for it after Hood's demise.
If you recall the radio broadcast at the beginning of the video... they did mention the loss of the Hood. I really love this video... First time I saw it, I actually flinched at the shell flying past.
Just a fun fact about this video....the old man that Sabaton talked to about a ship was the oldest living sailor from Bismarck. Also, the compass was the one from the Bismarck. The man was 90 something in this video, even though he doesn’t look like it, and died shortly after this video was made
I’d just like to mention that the name of the boat their on is revealed in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment as Primo Victoria, which is another of their songs, and quite a good one at that. I just loved that Easter egg!
Per your comments at 05:47 - If I recall correctly, the Prince of Wales was involved in the first contact with Bismarck and its escort cruiser Prinz Eugen, becoming heavily damaged from shells by both ships after HMS Hood blew up. I do not recall anywhere in history that HMS Prince of Wales returned to the fight to finish Bismarck off with the converging British fleet on the crippled german battleship. My grandfather served briefly in the Atlantic aboard a river class frigate HMCS Valleyfield (sunk by u-boat) and discussed naval history with me a great deal when I was young.
well yeah but the bismarck is also the story that you shouldnt send 1 battle cruiser and 1 battleship out alone and then send a damaged battleship back to harbour without escort im pretty shure if the germans would have waited until the other ships were repaired it would have been a other story
The Video was made with help from the company behind "World of Tanks" that needed some material to their game "World of Warships". And yes Sabaton really played on a boat in the "middle of nowhere"
some recommendations for sabaton songs: 82nd all the way, Attack of the dead men, primo Victoria, resist and bite. As well the polish Woodstock festival has some good ones like Uprising, 40:1, and Ghost Division. Sabaton has some really good songs imo
Most of the time, learning history in school is so dull and bland. They teach dates and countries. However, history becomes fascinating when you start to study events and people in history. That's why I love Sabaton. I've learned more about WWI from them than I ever did in school. History would have been amazing if the teacher had come in played a song like Bismark and said. "Today we will continue learning about WWII with focus on the war in the Atlantic." and then proceeded to discuss specific events and historical figures that influenced the war in that arena. I would have been hooked.
04:18 the British fleet did not "take it down" They damaged the rudder yes, Bismarck could only go in circles and it was too much of a job to repair while under heavy bombardment. They have investigated the wreck of Bismarck and even when under #"¤#¤ amount of bombardment from the British fleet, only 2 penetrations was found, way above the waterline where the armor was much weaker than where the pen needed to be to create a problem. They also discovered that ALL torpedo walls on the Bismarck were UNDAMAGED which means none of the "direct hit" torpedoes did any damage that would have sunk Bismarck. The surviving crew always said that they placed charges on the inside to prevent the ship falling into enemy hands and the investigation of the wreck show that they were telling the truth all this time.....If 1 hour of that heavy bombardment, including the 406mm!!!!! cannons from HMS Rodney only did that little damage I wonder how long it would have taken if the crew themselves had not sunk it...3 more hours? return to port to get more ammo and return to bombard Bismarck? or perhaps board it? Had they rudder not been hit im pretty sure Bismarck would have escaped to lose another day :o
In the beginning of the video, you can hear on the Radio : "Seeking vengeance on the that German Battle Cruiser that blew up the mighty Hood" Which explains why they didn't show it in the Video.
"German battleship, that blew up the mighty battlecruiser hood" 😋 And they did show a shell penetraring the deck plating and reaching the ammo stockpile. It's a scene from world of warships pc trailer for the German battleship tech tree
@Vlogging Through History - There is one small detail that most people miss when watching this video. The Captian of that fishing boat. He is the German Sailor that was rescued at the end. The WATCH in the video is what ties the whole video together. As for songs by Sabaton to react to, I can not begin to suggest which one to do because almost all of their songs are based on some form of history from WWII.
From what I learned, the Bismark was actually refered to as a "He" and not like a "She" that just about every other navy does. That's why in the song lyrics Sabaton also mentions the Bismark as a He.
Both "He" and "She" is correct. For traditional way "She" is correct. But from historical point of view,"He" is correct. I follow the historical way. You really sometimes had to call the Bismarck an "It" if you don't want to start a gender comment war about the Bismarck...
There's a dispute between who finished Bismarck. The British say that the torpedoes they did finished the job. Bismarck's crew says they put the battleship down themselves.
True. But I believe Ballard's expedition in 1989 confirmed that scuttling was the likely cause of the sinking. Of course it's a moot point. The British had so damaged Bismarck as to make the scuttling necessary, so it doesn't really matter who caused the actual sinking.
@@VloggingThroughHistory If I am right Sabaton actually hired the son of the real “Funkmaat”(Communication serviceman) to play the exact role of his father in this vid. Also they didn´t show the sinking of the hood intentionally because of the respect for the sailors died there and they do not what to be seen as glorifying all of this violence in the war.
@@VloggingThroughHistory You missed also a lot of detail. For example the first encounter of the B with British ships was in the mids of a fog bank (two cruisers if I am right) which is symbolised by the appearance out of the fog in the beginning. Also the sinking of the Hood was mentioned in the very beginning by the news they had on in the car.
@@markmeier2781 the Cruisers names are Norfolk and Suffolk if my memory is correct and the encounter happened in the Denmark strait somewhere between Iceland and Greenland the northern most route into the Atlantic and leading right into the northern convoy route.
A german historian analyzed the music video completely, finding historical refferences in every Single line and in every scene that got shown or wasnt shown (he interpreted the lack of an exploding hood as avoiding any political meaning or not making it propaganda)
3:55 I think it's because the the video focused on events happening after Denmark Strait. Note that when Bismarck engaged Prince of Wales, the PoW was on his starboard side. This could be the point when Bismarck was covering Prinz Eugen's escape, where PoW and Bismarck exchanged salvoes, but no shells hit on both sides. The events then unfold as usual, though I don't think Sheffield engaged Bismarck during his last stand.
Yes Bismarck is definitely my favourite Sabaton song. Few notes: Prince of Wales was very heavily damaged by Bismarck (during the Battle of the Denmark Strait) as well as Hood being sunk. Prince of Wales had a lot of her engineers on board at the time because she was having issues with her turrets and guns, which heavily affected her battle effectiveness. Therefore it was actually Rodney, King George V, Norfolk and Dorsetshire who worked together in the Bismarck’s last stand. In the video they show a Town/Crown Colony class cruiser engaging Bismarck, however the only cruisers who came into contact with the Bismarck was the Norfolk and Suffolk shadowing her and then the Dorsetshire fighting her later on. So they got that wrong. But everything else was perfect and it’s an amazing song!
The video is made by WarGaming, using models from their game World of Warships. At the time the video was made, no British heavy cruiser was in the game. As of now, they have Surrey(which was supposed to be the third Norfolk subclass County, first two being Norfolk and Dorsetshire, so they would have used that) and London+Devonshire (which could substitute for Suffolk). They went with what they had at the time. You could argue HMS Sheffield and HMS Southampton were present in the chase, however neither of them participated in the final battle iirc. Funnily enough, HMS Ark Royal was shown for the first time in this clip, making its way into the game only around month later, around anniversary of Battle of Denmark Strait/Sinking of Bismarck.
Here is some great Sabton songs about Swedish history and one cool thing is some of the Swedish and English versions has difference viewpoints from kings, soldiers, civilians. Etc In no order Lion from the North / Lejonet från Norden The Carolean's Prayer / Karolinens Bön A Lifetime of War / En Livstid i Krig long live the king / konungens likfärd Carolus Rex / Carolus Rex swedish version

Just now finding these Sabaton reactions of yours and figured I'd mention that I believe the first part of the song with the Bismarck firing its guns was it sinking the HMS Hood and then moving onwards to the Swordfish attacking it.
A little info on the music video itself for you History Guy. Sabaton actually didn't spend money on the Bismarck video, at least not outside the music production costs. The music video itself was made in collaboration with Wargaming who used their World of Warships engine and CGI trailer materials to create the video for them as a promotion of both the band and the game.
2:53 "They put money into this!" - Wargaming: "yeah we put some into this" - WoT and WoWS players: "and were did all that money come from, eh?" - Wargaming: *Makes it rain* I HAVE LITERALLY NO IDEA *makes it rain more*
Eh... quite honestly I doubt they actually put a whole lot of money into this particular video. Most of the effects they used are already present in the game, just super scaled up for this work of art.
I think the boat comment at the start is actually referring to the band having trouble finding a boat for hire that was big enough to rig their music setup on to film their part of the video. They talked about that in the Sabaton History video about the song.
Didn't see it in the comments, so just want to point out - the old fishing trawler captain in the vid is the last survivor of the Bismarck, Bernhard Heuer, who died shortly after filming. The young German sailor you see being handed the compass from Lutjens (I think) is supposed to represent Heuer.
Heuer died over a year before the video was released, I've read somewhere (as well as here in the comments) that it's actually Heuer's son. Comparing the trawler's captain to pictures of Heuer also doesn't add up, to be honest.
Actually that is not a fact. There's no consensus on this and pretty much everyone NOT on board Bismarck called the ship "she" at the time. Calling Bismarck 'he" was only known after it was sunk, when the surviving ranking officer stated that the Captain felt such a powerful ship should be a "he" and required the crew to use the masculine.
the video is a coop between World of warships and Sabaton, the Hood was not featured as she was not in the game so in first engagement they subbed it for the warspite as that ship was in the game.

@@cristiaolson7327 The problem is most history courses don't focus on battles. The main ones to pay attention to are the same ones always portrayed in media:
-Pearl Harbor
-D-Day
-Stalingrad
They mostly focus on the overviews of why these wars happened vs how the armies and navies got to that point. Standardized testing practically has killed this possibility. I would 100% guarantee that interest in history would shoot up if it wasn't treated as "useless" or as a list of facts.
@@TeaMMatE11 or (in my case), you skip from 1933 to 1989, because your school didn't have a single History teacher for a few months
HMS Hood's destruction was actually mentioned in the intro, the radiocaster described the Bismarck as a ship that "blew up the mighty battleship Hood"
Moreover: 2:51 is the HMS Hood taking fire. I know it´s all not included but more than just a reference - They built it. Might´ve been obvious idn.
My great grand father was one of the few survivors of the hood, and I am good fan of sabaton because of this song.

I love watching someone new watch and react to Sabaton and so far I haven't seen anyone bashing or disliking them. Makes me happy XD XD XD
a thing i love about the music video is that at 7:42 you can see the turret falling out of its base
which is a good attention to detail as warship turrets usually are just dropped into place in the boat and are held in by gravity
A tiny tidbit: the stencil where they (temporarily, I'm sure) rename the boat they're performing on:
Primo Victoria is the name of their second album, which is their first album about military history. The first track is also called Primo Victoria.
Night witches animated story video is another good 1 to watch
No Bullets Fly is a tear-jerker
Fun fact: fans been wanting a song about Bismarck, then a war game company asked the same. Sabaton put the 2 together and made the song as a single, the game company helped in making the video.
that's World of Warship's OP art department for ya :)
HMS Sheffield was also involved in the final actions against the Bismarck. She can be seen in this video at 4:40 with the triple-barrelled turrets.
The video is done by Wargaming, the producer for World of Warships. As for why the Hood didn't feature more in the video, the song is about Bismarck, not Hood.
some Sabaton songs i suggest are: Swedish Pagans, A Lifetime at War, Coat of arms and the Attack of the Dead Men
No bullets fly
Attack of the Dead Men!!!!!!!!
ghost division is nice too
Primo Victoria, Christmas Truce and The Last Dying Breath
Someone said it's also mentioned near the beginning on the radio
Its not a Hood, its a Prince of Wales, man
Prinz Eugen was detached from Bismarck during the operation to raid Allied merchant shipping, but this was cut short due to engine troubles.
@@undertakernumberone1 he’s talking about during the fight. Like the first comment says, there came a point where the weapons systems were blown to shit and damage control teams couldn’t keep up with the amount of damage Bismarck was taking. That’s when the decision to scuttle and abandon ship was made. Damage control teams don’t just give up. The ship is their home
what saddens me even more is the fate of Bismarck's companion the Prinz Eugen resting polluted for all eternity in the waters of bikini
@@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ That's not really true. There was a lot of crew still alive after she sunk. They would've been rescued too, by the RN, but a Uboat was detected nearby and the ships left rather than risk being torpedoed.

I love all the attention to detail! They even showed the turrets falling out when the ship capsized.
Insert superior German engineering meme here 🤣
The visual damage isn't the only thing that confirms the scuttling. The expedition saw there was little to no crushing caused by water pressure. another indication that watertight doors and interior piping were opened.
The British sailors all said it went down very evenly as if her valves were opened
Yep! I've played quite a bit of Atlantic Fleet on my gaming channel.
@@VloggingThroughHistory going to have to check it out
the hood was already sunk by the time the song starts. You can hear the news of its destruction in the 40's style of radio news broadcast as the crew unloads their gear from the truck. The song covers the second half of Bismarck's voyage, the vengeful hunt for it after Hood's demise.
In Sabaton, you dont find the Bismarck, the Bismarck finds you
Sabaton got me into history and they make really good freaking music!
I really like the detail that the guy they're riding with actually is supposed to be the sailor from the Bismarck who got rescued.
It's fun to go back and see your first Sabaton reaction knowing how much you've explored further
Oh man a history buff who has never listened to sabaton? I'm gonna subscribe to follow this new path that you're embarking into!
Ayyy, Bismarck was my first Sabaton song too! I found them through Spotify and I've been addicted since.
Screaming Eagles, Primo Victoria, To Hell and Back, and a few others are really good if you are looking for music videos.
The Bismark is the story of how one should never underestimate the Royal Navy and make the error pissing it off into vengeance levels.
well yeah but the bismarck is also the story that you shouldnt send 1 battle cruiser and 1 battleship out alone and then send a damaged battleship back to harbour without escort
im pretty shure if the germans would have waited until the other ships were repaired it would have been a other story
1:31 The coordinates in the compass are the coordinates of where the Bismark sank.
Bismark coming out of the fog.... God damn Sabaton knows how to send the chills
The Video was made with help from the company behind "World of Tanks" that needed some material to their game "World of Warships". And yes Sabaton really played on a boat in the "middle of nowhere"
yep, Wargaming.net, who coincidentally also did the Sabaton video for Primo Victoria

This song and video introduced me to Sabaton as well. I was instantly a fan.
"Today we will continue learning about WWII with focus on the war in the Atlantic."
and then proceeded to discuss specific events and historical figures that influenced the war in that arena.
I would have been hooked.
I couldn't agree more! I think probably many people feel that way
I always found it amazing that the guy who found the ship took until 1989 to find it considering everything we knew about its maiden/final journey.
Just noticed how the fisherman was the lad pulled to safety at the end. He didn't find the Bismarck, he never left....
no he never left his station and crew,
although his body did
I think that World of Warships commissioned them for the video or sponsored it or something like that.

In the beginning of the video, you can hear on the Radio :
"Seeking vengeance on the that German Battle Cruiser that blew up the mighty Hood"
Which explains why they didn't show it in the Video.
"German battleship, that blew up the mighty battlecruiser hood" 😋
And they did show a shell penetraring the deck plating and reaching the ammo stockpile.

Only the captain, Ernst Lindemann, called her a she. So both is okay, I guess. And "Der Bismarck" sounds stupid if you are german
I can't believe I missed so many times that the old boat captain was the boy with the pocket watch ...
I didn't catch that either.
@@markmeier2781 Yes I read somewhere that the man is the son of the survivor. Makes sense with the Hood.
I just saw you did this, and now you’re my favorite UA-cam!!!
A german historian analyzed the music video completely, finding historical refferences in every Single line and in every scene that got shown or wasnt shown (he interpreted the lack of an exploding hood as avoiding any political meaning or not making it propaganda)
why propaganda or political? Then don't show the Bismarck sinking if it's propaganda.....
Few notes:
Prince of Wales was very heavily damaged by Bismarck (during the Battle of the Denmark Strait) as well as Hood being sunk.

A funeral hymn for the crew of the Bismarck and the sailors who fought in the Battle of the Atlantic.
2:53 "They put money into this!"
- Wargaming: "yeah we put some into this"
- WoT and WoWS players: "and were did all that money come from, eh?"
- Wargaming: *Makes it rain* I HAVE LITERALLY NO IDEA *makes it rain more*
Eh... quite honestly I doubt they actually put a whole lot of money into this particular video. Most of the effects they used are already present in the game, just super scaled up for this work of art.
I think the boat comment at the start is actually referring to the band having trouble finding a boat for hire that was big enough to rig their music setup on to film their part of the video. They talked about that in the Sabaton History video about the song.
N1 reaction. Look into the night witches from sabaton and yarnhub animated history Musik combination long but worth
Fun fact: German ships are in masculine so Bissmarck is he, you can this in the song too!
