The incident began when spruce’s teammate, Renzo Zorzi, parked his car on the side due to a fuel meter failure, causing the car to catch on fire. Two marshals, one of whom was Frederick Jansen van Vuuren, crossed the track to assist Zorzi, despite the race still continuing. As the marshals walked across the track, two cars driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck and Tom Pryce were approaching rapidly. Stuck barely managed to avoid the marshals, but Pryce, who was directly behind Stuck, could not see Jansen van Vuuren and was unable to react as quickly as Stuck. Pryce’s car struck Jansen van Vuuren at approximately 270 km/h (170mph), splitting his body in half . The fire extinguisher that Jansen van Vuuren was carrying hit Pryce directly in the head. The impact of the 18kg fire extinguisher caused Pryce’s helmet to be wrenched upwards sharply, leading to his instant death. The force of the container was so great that it nearly decapitated Pryce, with the chin strap of his helmet digging into his neck. After the impact, Pryce’s car, now without a driver, sped down the main straight, eventually crashing into a wall. The accident resulted in the deaths of both people. Jansen can Vuuren was 19 years old, and Pryce was 27 years old. The incident remains one of the most shocking in Formula 1 history. For those wondering, he wasn't torn in half like some comments may suggest, it looks like that because of the low video quality and low frame rate, in reality when he was hit he got lunched in the air and started spinning, and the spinning cause his clothes to start coming off his body and when his pants come of his legs it gives the illusion that his legs were torn off the body which wasn't the case, there are accident photo's and videos and eye witnesses that have confirmed this. His body was extreamly disfigured with a lot of broken bones, but it was still all together without parts being torn off. And as for the driver, he also died from the fire extinguisher that the marshal was carrying hitting him on the head killing him instantly but his car kept going and crashed into another car at the end of the straight and stopped after they both hit a fence (the other driver was fine), and again no he wasn't decapitated like some comments suggest, his helmet strap did cut into his neck a bit but no where near decapitation, more of a surface cut. And there are accident photos that show this one in detail but they are graphic.

I saw this a long time ago, and am still traumatized. I really recommend not looking up the video. If you really want to know then I'll tell you, but trigger warning, and the words can't really capitulate how horrible it really was. After Renzo pulled his car over, and struggled to pull himself out + away from the car, he signaled for help with his burning car. Rules were, if someone pulls to the side, and there are no obstructions to the main course then the other racers continue the race. Two marshals began running over with fire extinguishers to put out the fire. One made it across just fine, and began putting out the fire, but as the second one was half way across he was hit by Tom's car. Hit legs got sucked under the car, but his upper body didn't and this made him rip in half, and his upper body began spinning in the air before slamming down by Renzo and the other marshal. Renzo was in shock and just stared, the other marshal didn't seem to notice, and continued with the fire. With this the race was called, and everyone began panicking, and checking on the riders. When people went to check on Tom they had learn he had been decapitated by the fire extinguisher Fredrick was holding when he was hit. His head was barely held on by a few tendons. It was a horrible event, and the whole crowd began screaming and crying the moment they saw the initial collision that took the two lives. After this accident, there are now "full stop" rules put in place so this hopefully never happens again.

Its not THAT disturbing ive seen it, the guy gets run over hit in the legs which causes him to get flipped into the air spinning around himself like a rag doll and dying instantly. Seen it years ago, it's absolutely brutal. Weirdly, this incident randomly popped into my head earlier today, so it seems like UA-cam can read my thoughts now, creepy.
Frederick got struck by pryces f1 formula car at around 200 kmh causing him to almost fully separate from the waist and violently flip into the air a dozen times before hitting the boundary. A fire extinguisher held by Frederick collided with Tom Pryce’s head causing for Tom’s head to be decapitated despite him wearing a helmet. The car remained in motion before crashing into a boundary where spectators found his lifeless, headless body. Federick’s body was so deformed and mutilated after the accident that the only way they could identify him was by lining all the marshals up and seeing who was missing. The video can be found on UA-cam by typing in Tom Pryce’s death but be warned because it is more gruesome than you could imagine it to be.

Ok, more detail. Jansen was almost completely ripped in half, as shown in a video I found in daily motion, and he was seen flipping over and over. It might be from 1977 but you can still see Jansen’s mangled body trying to keep together.

Volunteer race marshall here. You NEVER enter the race track without clearance from the control room/trailer. If anything happens you put your red flag out and call in on the radio where and what and ask for a FULL stop. All marshalls will fly red flags and halt any cars and the startline will not allow any new cars on track. Only when everything is cleared and sorted, and the safety truck has been round the whole course, returned to post, given the all clear, all marshalls have called in that they are OFF track will control give the order to lower red flags.

I saw this video years ago, it affected me negatively for about an hour. This is life tho, at its most brutal. There's another video similar to this, but it's entirety is in SLO-MO and you see a man's legs separate at the hips and go in the complete opposite direction of his torso. Brutal. The driver (Tom Pryce) died too, due to the fire extinguisher held by the marshall (Jansen van Vuuren) who got hit. Pryce died on impact. The car was overtaken by another driver (Jaques Lefitte), who the car crashed into in the following corner. Lefitte was mad and walked up to the car, only to find out Pryce was dead.
On top of that he would have been looking at a headless corpse, the fire extinguisher hit with so much force that the helmets chin strap acted like a sword.
So I looked up the video and I am even more traumatized now. I finally stopped crying. Usually I can handle these types of things but this one took me by surprise and have no other words. The first marshal barely missed Toms car, but after was very unlucky. The only part that was connecting him was his spine, and Tom got struck by the fire extinguisher Fred was holding. Tom died on impact, his foot still holding the cars gas, and at 145 mph, he got another driver and struck the wall. he was decapitated, hitting the barrier. the driver he hit survived with little to no injuries.

I saw this a long time ago, and am still traumatized. I really recommend not looking up the video. If you really want to know then I'll tell you, but trigger warning, and the words can't really capitulate how horrible it really was. After Renzo pulled his car over, and struggled to pull himself out + away from the car, he signaled for help with his burning car. Rules were, if someone pulls to the side, and there are no obstructions to the main course then the other racers continue the race. Two marshals began running over with fire extinguishers to put out the fire. One made it across just fine, and began putting out the fire, but as the second one was half way across he was hit by Tom's car. Hit legs got sucked under the car, but his upper body didn't and this made him rip in half, and his upper body began spinning in the air before slamming down by Renzo and the other marshal. Renzo was in shock and just stared, the other marshal didn't seem to notice, and continued with the fire. With this the race was called, and everyone began panicking, and checking on the riders. When people went to check on Tom they had learn he had been decapitated by the fire extinguisher Fredrick was holding when he was hit. His head was barely held on by a few tendons. It was a horrible event, and the whole crowd began screaming and crying the moment they saw the initial collision that took the two lives. After this accident, there are now "full stop" rules put in place so this hopefully never happens again.

Frederick got struck by pryces f1 formula car at around 200 kmh causing him to almost fully separate from the waist and violently flip into the air a dozen times before hitting the boundary. A fire extinguisher held by Frederick collided with Tom Pryce’s head causing for Tom’s head to be decapitated despite him wearing a helmet. The car remained in motion before crashing into a boundary where spectators found his lifeless, headless body. Federick’s body was so deformed and mutilated after the accident that the only way they could identify him was by lining all the marshals up and seeing who was missing.

Well, it's believed that Frederick got split in half but that's not true. His pants got thrown off due to the impact making it look like he was split in half. Tom Pryce himself died because of the Fire Extinguisher which Frederick had in his hands. It hit his head causing his skull to crush. Broke his neck too. The The car of Tom kept driving and caused a collision with another car. Tom and Frederick died immediately. Rest in Peace

Volunteer race marshall here.
You NEVER enter the race track without clearance from the control room/trailer. If anything happens you put your red flag out and call in on the radio where and what and ask for a FULL stop. All marshalls will fly red flags and halt any cars and the startline will not allow any new cars on track.
Only when everything is cleared and sorted, and the safety truck has been round the whole course, returned to post, given the all clear, all marshalls have called in that they are OFF track will control give the order to lower red flags.

The marshal was hit with such velocity that his legs was propelled quicker than his torso could move essentially tearing him in half. The fire extinguisher the marshal held, hit the driver with so much force, it severed his head from his spine. His head remained attached but only by skin. Truly graphic. Too much red. More than anyone should see.

Pryce died on impact. The car was overtaken by another driver (Jaques Lefitte), who the car crashed into in the following corner. Lefitte was mad and walked up to the car, only to find out Pryce was dead.
On top of that he would have been looking at a headless corpse, the fire extinguisher hit with so much force that the helmets chin strap acted like a sword.

So I looked up the video and I am even more traumatized now. I finally stopped crying. Usually I can handle these types of things but this one took me by surprise and have no other words. That was absolutely horrible and I pray that they rest in peace and that the families found peace as well. I can’t imagine how horrible that must’ve been for the families and everyone who saw that.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I normally handle graphic stuff "ok" but it wasnt until I saw something so fast and violent that I just couldn't handle even thinking or watching much anything of irl accidents like that. I was messed up for DAYS and the only advice I can give for helping cope with seeing stuff like this is to just talk with people about your feelings and watching something funny. "Copyright Claim Movie" on yt was my savior after watching something like this

This race was happening in the 1977 South African GP, on Lap 23, 2 marshals went to his car. Fred and someone else i forgot their name. The first marshal barely missed Toms car, but after was very unlucky. The only part that was connecting him was his spine, and Tom got struck by the fire extinguisher Fred was holding. Tom died on impact, his foot still holding the cars gas, and at 145 mph, he got another driver and struck the wall. he was decapitated, hitting the barrier. the driver he hit survived with little to no injuries.

Tom hit Van Vuuren, which caused him to do a whole bunch of flips. For those that have seen it, Van Vuuren was not split in half, it was his pants, and Tom was not decaptitated, he died from head trauma from the fire extingusher Van Vuuren was carrying and crashed into a wall. Both people died, and Van Vuuren was not completley mutilated.
Edit: Van Vuuren also wasn't the first to die. He died of blood loss.

Jansen got right the end of the street, just feet from Renzo’s car, when his legs were struck, flinging him like a star spinning through the air. His legs were torn from his body during the impact, and you can see his body start to fall apart before it even hit the ground, not even 15 feet from the engine. They didn’t even notice he was hit for a few seconds, until Renzo looked up from the car to his horror.
