After hearing what Richard said about the effect of the movie on other people, I just wanted to share with you my story. My daughter, as a high school junior, was sick over the Christmas holidays. We sat together on the couch for hours watching the behind the scenes for the Lord of the Rings. When we were done she looked at me and said, “You know what I’m gonna do when I grow up? I’m going to be a Folley artist.” She then went on to film school, graduated, and is now… A Folley artist. All because of the behind the scenes shots of people making orc noises in a back room.
My story has to do with the soundtracks. I was lucky enough to collect the three full length soundtracks for over 9 hours of music. As a professional writer, I listened to the soundtracks in my home office every Friday-Saturday for 15 years as I typed towards a deadline to give background music and cut down the sound of the kids and dog …. Funny thing was that I had to choose the music from the three movies based on the mood of the piece I was writing … sad for TT, victorious for ROTK, and happier for FOTR.
Thanks for the podcast. Appreciate your efforts.

Awesome to see so many of the back-of-camera roles being highlighted by extensive BTS content like that of LOTR! Makes it clear how many people's love goes into making a movie, as Richard said, and also lets people know what a wide variety of jobs exist in the film industry... Great for young people who're thinking about potential career directions!

Billy Boyd's laughter makes the world a better place. (truth). When I visited Weta 2 years ago (on pilgrimage b/c I AM one of those people that just want to move to NZ and work there). "You can see the love for the making of the movie in the movie". Sums it up perfectly!
This is wonderful. That we are still so interested in these films many years later shows how much the love of the film-makers was passed on to the films' audience.

NGL: when I learned someone was going to make a film version of LoTR I was not only dubious, but concerned. I'm no Tolkien scholar. But I count myself an avid enthusiast. And it's a well known axiom that the book is always better than the movie. On top of that, Bakshi's version was such crap. So, it was with bated breath that I watched The Fellowship and I then knew that this piece of literature was in loving hands. I had no idea who Peter Jackson or Richard Taylor were at the time. But clearly, they loved the story at least as much as I did and it became evident we were in good hands. The second two parts were also exquisite. I even approved of the cuts that were necessary. I was really looking forward to Tom Bombadil and the barrow wights. But I understand you can't put everything in a movie -- that's why the books are always better. (Don't talk to me about the Hobbit -- cutting stuff out is always better than adding stuff)

That passion was sure contagious all over the world. I'm sure I wouldn't have done many of the things I did, if not for this. For over a decade I would always watch the making of DVDs to push my own creativity. Just listening to the passion of the people who worked on these movies was so contagious. This is quite the gift!

As a kiwi kid who grew up watching the LOTR movies, I legit thought it was real - like a documentary or something until I was a solid 7 or 8 years old. Mostly, I think because I was super observant of plants ( Bush child things) and could actually see trees ect that I was familiar with in a movie for once 😂
I remember the macrocapa trees in hobbiton especially made me assume they were just movies from the 'olden days' or something haha.
So in my mind you guys were genuine historical figures until I actually thought about it hard enough to realise LOTR were just movies.

About the boiled peanuts that Stephen Colbert gave you: Warm them up. They are sold in gas/petrol stations in the American south. They're placed in crock pots and sold by the cup.

Oh, man...I waited so long to try boiled peanuts, because of the scent, but once I did, I was hooked. Now i can never move away, for fear they may not be available where ever I end up.

@@jean-paulaudette9246 A weird way I like them: warm them up and crack the nuts into Ramen.

As a South Carolinian (like Steven Colbert) give the boiled peanuts a chance! We made a big batch for the beach last week and I’m eating some leftovers while watching you guys!
