Thanksgiving amateur radio losers-why are there so many views? Did someone post this elsewhere?

- The ARRL has suspended my receipt of QST as only members in good standing receive QST and due to this video, I am no longer in good standing.
My radio has a feature that your fancy one doesn't, a power button. Go for a walk lid.

There is this thing that has helped me out as I’ve gotten older in determining why people do things that don’t affect me. I mind my own business.
most older hams dont care hrcc and i find it fun that this ham thinks that every body have family when alot done hurts me to hear him trashing the bands

@@K1OIK IMO, a contest is a waist of the air waves and I've even asked, is this what the spectrum has come to? It could fill the gap between running emergency net drills but o n a holiday? Trust me mate, 20 years in the CG, spending time away from family during the holidays is something I'm well aware of, but people making mistakes knows no holiday. Mother nature knows no holiday. Maybe it's good to know who is up and on the air when you need them the most. Just something to think about. But I do chuckle sometimes at the "contests". seem to be a lot over the years.

Contesting, ragchewing, SOTA, POTA, Special Events, satellite, Rapid Meteor exchange , EME, Certificate Chasing, one way Beacon transmitting….
One thing remains the same. NONE of this is USELESS contacts. It’s HAM RDIO. And each and every one of these activities so long as it keeps HF alive, used and enjoyed has its place wether it’s an activity you enjoy or not.
Remember Hams are the single best radio operators in the world across all formats of radio and those before us worked hard for us to have this status. So when ill feelings arise… don’t speak if you’re going to talk down or criticize.
Instead Promote what you prefer to do on HF to spark enthusiasm in others. Or explain why you feel contests during thanksgiving is a bad idea. So let’s try …… instead.

Contesters are essentially the reason radio tech has improved..... we are similar to the road and track guys that push new model of cars to the limit to see how it handles and what upgrades/improvements are needed....next contester you meet, thank him for your Flex

To useless complain about another mans hobby no less. bet at lest 2 of those signals had a youngster in the room showing them the wonders of HAM radio on turkey day.

And apologies to the operators from other countries featured on his video who don't celebrate U.S. Thanksgiving and failed to coordinate their contest schedules appropriately. Kind of regret helping his algorithm by even posting this comment...

A hobby is what you make of it. It is not defined by someone else's distorted, sour grapes viewpoint. ANY activity can be described as useless by someone who has no interest or knowledge of it. I powered up my station late last night (Sat.) and tuned around 10 and 20 meters. In the space of 40 minutes, running 100 watts, I easily made contacts with Japan, Guam, Tasmania, New Zealand and the Cape Verde Islands with stations participating in the CQ WW cw contest. That was the first time I had been on the bands since early last summer, and I took advantage of the contest activity to confirm my equipment and homebrew antennas were working and to check the level of propagation to various parts of the planet. That is one tiny slice of the dynamic hobby I enjoy. Very rewarding.
What did you discuss? Family, other hobbies, jobs? their children?
It was rewarding to send 5NN and exchange nothing else whatever, very sad.
It’s the CQ World Wide DX contest (CW). Exchange is RST and CQ Zone. Its appeal is that you can work a lot of DX quickly . If you’re looking for human connection, this is not the activity for you.
If you are looking for human connection ham radio is not for you.

I wonder if one of the points he's trying to make is, you don't have to participate if you have something that is viewed as BETTER to do? I'm not a ham op. I did do communications in 18 of my 20 years as a Coast Guard Radioman. I've covered all spectrums of our comms ability, even spent 4+ years as an instructor in said profession. I just LISTEN now and then. Keeping my CW skills up. Wife things I'm crazy, but I blame it on the beer. 73's

And PS: My family arrives every year on Wednesday and leaves Saturday after thanksgiving to avoid travel traffic. So the contest doesn’t interfere with our holiday.
So, why aren't you spending quality time with your family instead of trashing a ham radio activity that you don't agree with? Those people are doing it because they enjoy it and they're certainly not causing any harm to you. If you don't like listening to contesters, turn your damn radio off!
Contest was on Saturday, so I don't see the problem.
The sad thing is that a lot of these CW contest ops could just set up computers to talk with each other, get their 5NN's and enjoy their turkeys with their families. The whole concept of contests is so damn banal, why not just automate them? Then they could have 24/7 contests and maybe have another machine coming up with random reasons for the contests?

Just imagine all of those visiting little kids who arrive and immediately start begging Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle, whomever to show them the radio again. Is there a point to this video (other than making unsolicited rude comments)? If this wasn’t intended to offend then you need to sharpen up your social skills!
Well, if you wanted to get peoples attention and shake the hive, you win LOL. Loosers, far from it. Professional, hey, even the best of hobbies (and professions) have clowns. But in the 18 of my 20 years of being a Coast Guard (old school) Radioman, it was always a delight to work with a Hamop during a long haul search and rescue situation where it was a HAMOP who reported it. As questionable as it might be to why people would be running a contest on TGiving, but at least they are not just tuning up to listen in. Whats the difference? Retired CG RM/TC sends. 73's

I really don’t enjoy the 5NN TU events. Most of these are keyboard ops but I spent many of my working years with a keyboard and don’t want to keep doing that. I prefer a rag chew but at least get a real RST QTH and op name exchange. I do hunt POTA activations if the SKCC pickings are slim but always want a rag chew.
When I was stationed at CG Commsta Honolulu/NMO, I was the QSL clerk (as a collateral duty). I always enjoyed sending our QSL cards to all over the world. It's a hobby (radio) that is wider then some realize.

So you're doing exactly what you are complaining these other folks are doing. Taking time away from your family on Thanksgiving to play radio. These contests aren't useless. And I don't know on what authority you have to say that the signal reports are not truthful. Lot of accusations here. These contests are important, not only to the HOBBBY, but also for people to sharpen their CW skills. Also some contests like this one, are used for propagation reports. Even NASA uses CQ contests and QSO parties to study the ionosphere during a solar eclipse.
That is one of the biggest piles of BS I have seen in a while. I was with my family for two days, after which they left to visit other family and I came home alone to make the video. I have family coming over today, no ham radio when they are here. Every last signal report is the same, they are lying, thus useless. What is a, "HOBBBY?" Sharpen skills!, HA, most transmissions are programmed. Give a citation that NASA uses ham radio for anything at all.

Well good for you. Original poster is 100% correct. This video is one of the most judgmental videos I have ever seen, based on ZERO knowledge of any of the individuals involved. I was looking for a good HAM UA-cam channel as I was considering getting involved in it. Your channel will NOT be on my subscription list.

1. You have to pass a test my daughter passed when she was eight.
2, you must be overweight.

I've always wondered where these guys go after any contest. You can tune through the bands after any contest is over, and find no signals, or any one to answer a CQ...

Contesters run me off of CW all the time RTTY is even worse. They should limit the band that they can disrupt. If I hear a contest I just shut the rig off.
Just came across this guy. I normally despise the moniker "Sad Ham" that the "popular" GMRS youtube guy uses, but the poster of this video is a SAD HAM. Wow, there is a lot going on here. He's angry that the decoder can't copy a bug sender (that wasn't actually a bug sender) meanwhile, the operator on the other end can copy it just fine with his brain, no problem. If you hate Ham Radio that much, perhaps going to CB or GMRS would be a better match for you.
It is horrible that I despise 15 second contacts in favor of actually being social and talking to another human being.
If a decoder cannot copy CW as long as the signal is strong enough the sender either has a poor fist or is using a bug.
Ham radio is so unimportant that no one could hate it.
The meaning of JINGOISM is extreme chauvinism or nationalism.
So you don't know the people that you are complaining about. If people are on during the holiday maybe they scheduled a time to be on the radio. Maybe they are single with no family. Maybe they are showing family members how amateur radio works and maybe they will inspire younger generations to get into the hobby and keep amateur radio alive. Being this type of contester shows you have no life. I would guess you are right in part, some of the contesters may have already concluded family visits, but I would bet most are married and have family in house and abandoned them. If they are showing family contests that guarantees no one younger will get within a mile of a ham radio. Showing contests is the best way to drive away newcomers. I have a life, I teach children, play volleyball, softball, pickleball and bike.
I have done many videos and not one video has got this many views so quickly.

As far as showing people contesting, it's just one part of amateur radio. Maybe they showed more than that. Again, your video is worthless and negative. The only thing I can think of where contesting becomes useful is........... Oh yes, the wee little piece of paper which claims you were a useful idiot consuming bandwidth for 10 to 24 hrs! It is about time to have weekends devoted to RAGCHEW, and get to know new friends over the air. I am sick and tired of CONTESTERS! If you need a computer to find out who you are making contact with, you may as well use email or VOIP! I am waiting for the newer hams to require the use of a fidget finger toy that lights up to be part of their equipment next! Another thing, this really gets me, when grown men or women state they are going to go and (PLAY RADIO), it is not a darn video game! Remember, amateur radio used to be something to be proud of, and now it seems like it has turned into just fun and games! Oh, and paying inflated prices to belong to CLUBS... heck I moved to a new city which has 78 members, only 12 show up every month, and it is always about 2 or three members controlling the (AGENDA). Who cares! They rarely teach anything at the club, and the small clique at the top regularly meet up for coffee without open invitations to any other members. And lastly I am a handi-ham, and an Extra, and the club treats me like the plague, I have given my last donation to the club, after four years, they still cannot remember my name.
