I’ve got to say, this is a brilliant explanation. I have managed to follow this to the letter and now have a fantastic porch light 💡. The hardest thing was feeding the cable without too much mess. Thank you 🙏🏻
These are great videos mate, I’m a facilities and maintenance tech for a transport company and get a lot of info from UA-cam on how to do things that I’ve never done before, I almost have to know a certain amount about every trade and your videos are very easy to understand and are super helpful.
Keep them coming, thanks 🙏
Great informative video thank you, I’m wiring two LED lights using a fuse spur off a socket and this video has been a big help
I looked this video up because I'm fitting in a new light in my porch, originally wired by an electrician. I couldn't figure the wiring out, until I eventually realised the neutral was connected via a single-pole switch and the live was going straight to the light fitting. The light was a PIR-switched unit and the single-pole switch was only ever used to isolate the unit when I was changing the bulb, which of course, it wasn't actually doing. Always check with circuit-tester or multi-meter, even if the wiring was done by a qualified person. Super video, by the way, very good set-up to demonstrate wiring.
Thanks for another good and well explained, I am a job tomorrow for garden out sockets and lights, wasnt too sure if I need to run two swa cable 1.2 and 2.5 but after watching this video I got a clear idea what to do tomorrow.
Love your videos! They are super clear and simple, and I have used a number of your videos for different projects. Ceiling rose to spotlights, fitting bathroom fan wiring and now this one. Thankyou! 🤩
This is the only video I’ve found which has given instructions on how to do this. Fantastic, thanks 🙏
I've used your videos to get me through a few projects. Thanks ever so much for the time you take to help others :)
Thank you for the video I'm wiring a light of a socket. Cheers
Fantastic video so easily explained, I used it to install some external flood lights and it worked a treat. I also took photos of each stage as a record of the connections and used wago connectors internally.
Your videos are great. I'm converting my garage into a man cave, the lights currently are plugged into a socket, this will enable me to free that socket up for other things now.
All your videos are well explained and easy to follow. You take your time and don’t rush talking. Thanks.
The best video on UA-cam for wiring a light fitting/switch from a Plug Socket!
Another excellent video pal. Thanks. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Cheers for your helpful video!
I used 2.5mm from the socket to FCU. Then you only need 1 or 1.5mm to your switch and lamp. In the UK (not sure on other regs), your FCU should have a 3amp fuse. I can't see a 5amp being a problem though.
I completed this setup, installing a light for the under stairs cupboard. All bits from my local Screwfix (already had 2.5 and 1mm cable), total cost under £20 which included 6m of trunking. A cheap enough DIY job.
Thanks again for the great video!
Tom Stallard can you use 1.5 flexie cable from the spur to the light
Dougie Price Hi mate. If you're using a typical domestic lamp, with a 40w bulb (I'm guessing you'll use an LED bulb of a few watt) then 1.5mm from your fused spur to your lamp would be fine. I'm guessing you're using a switched fused spur to turn your lamp on and off, rather than having a separate switch? This isn't a problem.
Disclosure:I am not an expert, so please don't take my advice only as I might be entirely wrong.
I have not had a problem with my setup, as described in my first comment. Good luck.
Thank you so much for explaining so simple. Excellent video for home lights. Keep us educating 👍👍
I love the clarity of your video! Really easy to follow.
Well done, good tip
You're the man
Thank you 👍
I followed your tutorial and success I now have a on off switch to my light fixture in porch without having to plug an ugly wire into socket Thankyou 😊
The best explanation iv seen in like 20 videos.
Good demo! Thanks for the live example. :)
Clear, concise,no stupid music, great stuff, thankyou
Thank you. very helpful as I need to do this exact thing.
Perfect. Very clear and good camera angle.
Thank you , very clearly explained and good demonstration
Very clear instructions. Concise language. Many thanks. Subbed.
Excellent. To the point and answers all the questions in my head.
Very helpful, nice and simple to understand thanks for the upload 👍🏻
Thank you for taking the time to give your knowledge and help to others. I have followed your detailed instructions and now have a working light in my shed. There is no light showing on my FSR with the light switched on or off, is this something I should be concerned about in terms of safety??? the light is woring fine.
Very helpful just what I wanted to know.
Great Advice thanks for posting
Very handy video ,want to fit a light underneath my stairs has am turning it into storage space .so got a double 2.5 socket on ring at bottom .so can run cable up wall to a FCU and run 1.5 to a light switch. Thanks for posting
Very helpful, exellent video. Thanks.
Very well explained, thank you!
Thank you or your very clear and informative video.
I wonder if you could show how to wire a second switch that controls a separate light in parallel with this same circuit?
The exact info I needed. Thanks
Ace. Great training Video.
HELP...
Thank you for your help on this installation.
Would you please help; following on this video, I would like to extend from double socket then to a spur then to a double socket and finally to a light switch. Do I need a normal switch or a 3A/5A fused switch. Thanks
Spot on, thank you 👍
Very informative video and well explained.
If you or anyone can help me with this situation, I'd appreciate it: I've just discovered by pure chance that my kitchen lights are connected to the 45 amp cooker isolator switch. Is this a risky scenario, or can I just leave it? Many thanks in advance!
Fantastic explanation, really helped me out
Nice video and helpful thank you
Most excellent. This is a very good explanation thank you very much
Good video, just what I was looking for
Great video, thank you so much
Hi, Excellent content. Thank you.
Thanks a lot mate, very clear
Excellent-thanks.
Brilliant thanks.
Thanks man!!
Very good description
Is it not possible to just use the FCU switch as the light switch in a dual role, rather than having a separate switch for the light?
Yes u can
I did mine from socket to FCU to light
Thanks to you I now have a light under my stairs, it flickers sometimes though
You Sir is amazing 😊
Great video! Thanks so much. Have learnt lots from your vids. One question - can you run a second light switch and light off the first light switch? So 2 lights on their own respective switches but from the same spur/fcu? Thanks again
You should be able to as its going through and fcu, so even of there was a fault, it'll be protected by the fuse and rccd in the cu
Good one thanks🌹
Great video. Nice and clear 👍
Great video and very informative. How could i do something similar but using a double socket as my power source for two garden lights. Thanks
nice one man. really clear
Brilliant video, could I run another light switch off that same FCU or would I need to install another FCU off a different socket?
Very good info.If I need to connect an outdoor light through it,do I need to take it from the ceiling rose + double switch ?
Please explain.
Thanks
Thank you very much mate fantistic video
Do you have to change the 13 am, which usually comes in an FCU with a 3 amp or does it not really matter?
Mate I have used your videos to do some electrical work that otherwise I wouldn’t of had a clue. Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
wouldn't *have
Thanks for sharing it with us
Hi i have a question, i have one bedroom that only had one socket outlet, i had a spur socket added to the other side of the room last year, so currently it has 2 socket outlets one on the ring main and one is a spur. I want to add a wall light soon can i use a fused spur from the spur to the new wall light or does it have to be off the ring main?
Can I use this approach to add a light to an existing spur socket? (I've already used it to add a light to the main ring circuit)
Hi there thanks for the video - very useful. I've got a simple question - can I just use a 13amp fused switch spurred from socket straight to light?
@Michael Firecracker A 1A fuse will cope with a maximum 250w lamp
Hi I have an old existing security light outside connected to a switch inside wall. Will fit new LED PIR light, do I need to change the 1 gang switch to a 5amp fused switch? Then use 1.5mm cable to outside wall connected via junction box with cable from security light? Appreciate your advice thanks... Great videos 👍
Can a two way light switch be added to this set up? If so would the neutral from the 3 core and earth be added to L2 of the first switch or do it have to be connected directly to the other 2 neutral wires in the connector block? Thanks in advance.
Great help
I have a fused spur in my kitchen and wanted to run power from it to my summer house. 2 double sockets and light. Is that possible?
Thanks mate ❤
I’m guessing you could connect directly to the consumer unit or a junction box as long as there’s a FCU between the power and the switch, simply explained though good video.
When you connect it straight to the CU its a lighting circuit on 1.5 mm cable and 6 amp MCB and you don't need FCU. Cheers
Hi, great videos!!
Can I add this FCU and switch/light to a Spur socket that I’ve already added to a ring main?
Brilliant vid mate, what i can't find out (as doing my electric course presently) is i'm aware you can only spur a socket once on a circuit, i'm considering wiring a cable into my parents shed for them for a socket but i was also considering putting in a light.. would it be possible to spur of a socket and the use that socket, downgrade it to fit for a light as well?
You're not supposed to but yeh you can do what he done here.
You don't even need the light switch in all honesty you could have the Fuse as the light switch
Good vid. Can the fcu be in the ring main and not just a spur so 2 feed cables + flex
Yes
I'm looking to add a light to an ensuite I'm adding to my bedroom. Its not practical to run from my lighting ring so this is really helpful. However, does anyone know if can I add an extractor fan to this as well ??
I have a fused spur with flex coming out on load side and on the supply side I fed by 2.5 cable I want to spur of this to a light switch that feeds 3 lights
How can I do this
Please can you help me I would really appreciate your advice as I’m stuck on what I should do.
Can I connect both my fridge freezer and duel fuel cooker to a 13A switched fused spur on a double socket or would it overload it?
Below I have taken the time to get all the technical spec for each appliance from the manuals
American fridge freezer
BEKO Pro ASDM241PX
230v voltage
50hz frequency
150w wattage
0.85A current
The fridge freezer has a standard 1.5mm twin&earth cable with 13A plug on it
Duel fuel cooker (gas cooker, electric oven)
Kenwood CK305-1
230v voltage
50hz frequency
2270w wattage
The duel fuel cooker has no cable or plug on it but the manual saying to add 1.5mm twin&earth cable to the feeder cable connection which is on the rear of the cooker and the other end Must be connected to a 13A switched fuse spur outlet.
In my kitchen where I want to place both appliances I have few normal non spur sockets plus I have a 13A switched fused spur outlet that is connected to a single socket, I’m thinking to change that single to a double socket so I can add the cooker and fridge freezer to it or could I add just the cooker to that and just plug the freezer to a normal non spur/non fused spur socket?
Hope this all makes sense...
Total rating at 2420w sure you can. As long as it's of a radial circuit and not drawing load from a spur, you're good.
Got a question for you, up to how many lights can you install using FCU?
do you have to run a wire from the fused spur to the normal light switch? or can you go directly from fused spur to the lights? (using the fused spur as a normal On/Off switch)
My electrician has used a fused switch as a light switch because it’s in a large walk-in cupboard that used to have the old hot water cistern with an immersion heater, so the switch doesn’t have to look nice as it’s not in a room. The only problem is that I can’t reach the fused switch very easily as it’s very high up on the wall (where he’s connected to existing cable, as it was the previous power supply for the water immersion heater) so I’m watching this video to see how to wire a normal light switch from the unreachable fused switch. I’d rather add the extra switch myself as it looks simple enough to do.
Do you need a FCU if you are putting in led down lights off a socket if you are putting in a light switch ?? And how many Led lights can you fit to one socket mate??.
Good video
Thanks for posting this video, out of interest could you just use the FCU as the light switch?
Marek Wojcik I was thinking exactly the same thing, why not just use the fcu as the light switch? Can someone answer please, thanks
Yes, it's a switch.
That said, I'm not sure about design limitations. A light switch is designed to be switched on and off many times, an fcu isn't, you tend to switch them on and off just a few times over their lifetime - although the contacts are the same.
The answer to your question yes it permittable to use it as a switch. A 5 amp fuse is a bit of an overkill though it would be much safer to use a 3 amp fuse in this case. A 3 amp fuse has a load rated at 700 watts where as a 5 amp fuse is rated a 1200 watts. You wouldn't want to exceed 700 watts of an fcu on for the lighting. If anyone adds a light switch somewhere down the like it would be rated for a max load of 400 watts.
Thanks dude
Can you do what's common in the US, where a single socket is connected to the light switch?
So when you switch the main light on, power to the socket is switched on, also powering a connected floor lamp?
Hi great video, Can the same setup be used for a dimmer instead of the switch for the light with a dimmable bulb?
Yes you can use an non switch FCU for this, that’s what I would do
Brilliant thanks
Hey, awesome video, does the FCU need to be switched or could you use an unswitched one so then you never have to touch it and can just use the light switch?
This is what I'm interested in aswell....
@@alanbishop1282 used a switched on and get rid of the actual switch
@@Mikelufc1985 I ended up using a switched FCU and hiding inside the cupboard with the double socket and ran the lighting circuit up into the ceiling and down in the wall by the door. Works well 🙂👍
Is there a minimum distance between the double socket and the fused spur?
good video very helpful is this legal to do in uk
Yes
Quick question.... Can someone help... Would this apply for outside light...
I want put light outside the side of the house. The power source is plug in the kitchen... Do I need out stitch with that?
Why coming out do you have 1.5mm and not 1.0mm? Thanks.
Hey great video! Can I ask a Q. Please??? I have some decking lights that have a 12v in-plug transformer. Can I run a spur from a light switch to an un-switched socket to act as the switch for turning them on??
Hi. You can't make a spur from switch to a socket. The switch is on 6 amp MCB and later someone unaware can plug 2kw appliance into this socket.
Can i create a plug socket stright from light circuit?
How do you create a switched live using a fused spur though? This keeps my lights on a photocell permanently on. Thanks
You mean you want it to come Thru to operate a PIR?
I hope the conduit running from the fused switch spur box to the light switch isn't being run on the diagonal. It should run horizontally then vertically as there are notional "safe" areas which run horizontally and vertically through each electrical fitment. Whilst I'm at it, the switched fuse box would have been far better placed underneath the light switch.
I know it's all for demonstration, but there is a principle at stake here.
I was just thinking that. ALL wiring must be run either vertically or horizontally, far, far safer when someone comes along later and decides to drill a hole for shelves, pictures, etc
Very good
Is it a 5amp fuse in the fcu as the lights are usually 6amp and therefore, is the closest?
