I agree. The fact that MacGyver CHOSE not to use a gun is a core part of who the character is--and is the key reason for Mac's clever use of physics and chemistry that makes the show unique. To take that away in the reboot is to fundamentally change who the character is.
I'm 42 and I grew up with old MacGyver and loved it. I'm also a big fan of the new MacGyver and never miss an episode. Both shows have to be taken in the era in which they were made. They had to modernize it in order for the show to work. In my mind, they are not the same show and can't be compared to each other. In all honesty, I'm still impressed how they continue to keep a gun out of MacGyver's hands in this day and age. The "no gun" policy made no sense for MacGyver's line of work back then and it's even harder to justify now so how they manage to explain and work around that without making MacGyver look stupid is amazing. With that being said, both Richard and Lucas are charming but in different ways. Richard had more of a real world, boy next door appeal. Lucas Till is young and beautiful and as we know, it's mostly the young and beautiful who are made the leads of TV shows and movies. What I love about Lucas is that although he is young and beautiful, he is also a good actor. Lucas is the real deal: looks, charm, great comedic timing, and the ability to do whatever they ask him to do. Also, he and George Eads play off each other really well. You buy that these two have been friends/brothers for a long time. My advice would be to put the original out of your mind and enjoy the new one for what it is.
I would have preferred they went the Hawaii 5-0 route and made him Macgyver's son instead of saying this is a younger version of the same character. That way maybe Richard Dean Anderson could be a recurring character and maybe they could have worked out an interesting dynamic between the two.
Richard Dean Anderson could still have a roll in the show, it just wouldn't be playing Mac. (Of course, they'd have to try and get him to come out of retirement first.) And you do remember what happened in the last episode of season 7, right? I'd also like to point out that Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-0 is not the son of the original Steve McGarrett from Hawaii Five-O. In the reboot, Steve is named after his grandfather who was killed in the Pearl Harbor attacks.
What are you talking about? Hawaii 5-0 made Alex the original Steve MacGarrett, not his son and turned Kono into a hot young woman. When we first meet her, she is wearing a bikini, OK? Don't get me wrong; I like both versions, but to say that Hawaii 5-0 took the better route is hypocritical. Both shows were updated and populated with young hot people. Albeit, most of the Hawaii 5-0 cast is early 30's, but still Grace Park is young and very beautiful.
One of my big issues with the new show is how Lucas Till is either being directed to portray him or has decided to portray him; with the emotional expression of an ant. The robot in the show has a wider emotional expression range than what Till is showing. Richard Dean Anderson would smile from ear to ear in good times, and show genuine worry at bad times - Lucas Till looks like a person whose face has been replaced with botox.
The 1985 MacGyver, Richard Dean Anderson, is my hero. I am already 40yo, trying to be like him (in smartness) since my childhood. Been carrying a pocket knife everyday for 30ish years now.
Thanks, I really enjoyed this. Mind you, having written for the original series for 3 seasons, I don't have an objective point of view. It was fun to see that you used clips from the gun flashback episode that I wrote. You really nail what's wrong with the new show. Why even call it MACGYVER other than to cash in on the familiarity of the title - which would have no value today if not for what the original series stood for. The original MacGyver was as much about the values of the character as it was about the MacGyverisms. I hate that they have used character names like DALTON for example - he was our fun, unpredicatble guy played wonderfully by Bruce McGill. Their "Dalton" is a gun-happy mass killer. I lost track of the body count in the pilot! Different times, different show, I guess. I was shocked to see it got a second season. The anti-gun thing evolved (in the original, unaird pilot he shot a gun!) as the show went on - we blew shit up alot, but rarely killed anyone. It was always supposed to be about brains over violence, unlike the new show. And I hate the dumb way they explain things to the audience like they're toddlers or mentally challenged. (whine, bitch whine...) A note about the overly-white casting: Most of the show was shot in Vancouver. We have a diverse culture here (primarily Asian even then) but that doesn't make them all good actors. A very small pool of non-white actors to cast from. We made a point of colour-blind casting as much as possible - and it was even then a network requirement. That said, we have an unknown actor, Cuba Gooding Jr. one of his first breaks as a recurring character. Glad you liked the show.
I absolutely loved the original show and there were several episodes that featured actors of color so I'm not sure where the overly-white casting comment is coming from. With that being said, most everything is being rebooted nowadays and most of the time, the reboot has nothing to do with the original. It's all about name recognition so yes, the familiar name is the hook. However, the new MacGyver still emphasizes brain over brawn while having to accommodate modern times. It would be utterly ridiculous in this day and age to expect them to not have to kill people. Hell, it was ridiculous then and I was a preteen. Dalton is not a gun-happy mass killer. He was in the military and was trained with the mindset of survival no matter what. As the show progresses, Jack does address the fact that killing bothers him, but with Jack's training, hesitation means death. Considering the fact that MacGyver refuses to carry a gun and it's 2018, Jack has little choice but to carry a weapon so that he can defend them both.
Wow you wrote for MacGyver? Do you have any tips for young up and coming filmmakers? I'm looking to sort of tell stories with the same values embedded into Macgyver. I'm being trained in the technical side of filmmaking right now and will have the means to start creating a web series in the future and if you have any tips I'd greatly appreciate them.
I wrote RDA back in the early 90s for an autographed MG photo and he (or probably his team) sent me a couple of colored autographed postcards. I wrote again to ask for the glossy large black and white photo because that was what my classmate got and I liked it better than what I got. Yeah I said thank you but please send me another one LOL. I was so happy that I was sent a large BW photo after a month's wait...but this time the RDA's signature was different haha
Like they say old is gold...the old macgyver is amazing with older and better ideas but the new macgyver has also had alot of work put into it and they do deserve the credit for their acting skills and the use of modern technology😍
One thing I hate about new MacGyver is how much help he needs. Original Mac was able to do everything on his own. New Mac is very dependable. Small thing, but still.
they have to make room for all the diverse characters and not have them be token like a the ' token black guy.' which of course s bull shit. macgyver as a character did do everything on his own. thats a lot of characters compared to him with a random episode girl and peter. most of the cast look like incompetent kids. and murdock, he only kills bad people now?
As a huge fan of Mac1, I must admit firsts three seasons look a little old and old fashioned. I would completly understand if younger audiences would prefer Mac2. Also, Mac1 did less tricks as seasons were growing. I mean, the Pilot episode was full of tricks, but after first season, that thing changed. Mac2 is making tricks everytime, that is something I really like on this one. Well, is a different era, Mac1 is great to watch if you are 40. But I understand new audiences, I don't think Lucas Till is trying to eclipse Richard Dean. I think he is having fun doing something really creative, not trying to offense anyone. I like them both.
You make a good point, but i do not think you represent the small amount of "tricks" in the reboot series fairly... it was the biggest disappointment for me that they do not seem to have the writers to come up with more than 1 or 2 throwaway gimmicks each episode and that they got even worse and less believable than the absolute over the top scenes in the old series (which were rare, usually what he did DIY was at least impressive and did look fine as it was shown... the new series does not stackup too well to that, mostly the tricks end up too flashy to be practical and feel horribly plotdriven to boot)
I agree with your opinion almost completely. Yes, new generation needs action scenes all the time and old Macgyver could be too boring for them. Yes, couple of the first seasons (old Macgyver) there was full of breathtaking tricks, but after couple seasons, they were less and less. Later Macgyver were described more as some kind of psychologist, who teach youth not to use drugs, do not betray friends and parents (of course, this also is very important, but...), and sometimes... shows some tricks. ) For modern youth this could be even boring. But I would not continue this Macgyver theme. Richard Dean Anderson can be proud that he refused to be connected with this. We live with the people without fantasy? New Macgyver, new Knight Rider, new Maska... Only idea is to earn money from famous names? They are heroes of our, "boring" generation, let`s new generation invent theirs own heroes! )
I like the old MacGyver better because Richard Dean Anderson is the one and only MacGyver and he was made for the role :). I used to watch it all the time with my brother and dad when i was a kid and i have all the 7 seasons on dvd :) I just don't like the new show , because something doesn't add up .
Richard Dean Anderson is so good in MacGyver and then he did another classic right after with Jack Oniell in Stargate Sg1. Richard Dean Anderson really is a legend
Exactly. He made it unforgettable. RDA has a great natural charisma and is a fantastic actor. I have my resistances with the new series. I've seen it and let's say it maintains the basic characteristics of the original characters: Mac, Jack, Murdoc and the actors do not do it badly. But I still believe that the original is the best. I am waiting for my country to arrive in season 2 only to see Michael Des Barres, not as Murdoc but as Nicholas Helman and also Bruce McGill, the old Jack. If you are from Usa and want, you can see Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Des Barres together in the next Rhode Island Comics Contest in November of this year 2018.
The new Macgiver is very cocky and nothing like the old one. That is why I liked the original series. He just did what was expected without acting like he was special. I will not be watching the new series.
I totally agree with this video! Lucas Till could have pulled off a great New MacGyver but the prodution of the show is just so shit... They totally missed the point of what MacGyver truly was... And that is a big shame :/ Richard Dean Anderson will forever be the only MacGyver !!!
This basically sums it all up for me. The biggest problem with a reboot is the why and the how. Why are you rebooting this and how is it going to get rebooted? MacGyver was released, as this video says, as a foil to the other TV shows that were out there, Miami Vice, A Team, and any other show where the protagonist used a gun. MacGyver was novel because he didn't use a gun, but his mind. For the first time our hero is a genius. Not some one liner gun toting womanizer. The next is the how. The new MacGyver throws away much of the 80s character and reimagines him in the same stock, trite vision that just about every other tv show has, again pointed out in the video. MacGyver was a reaction AGAINST the tropes of the 80s, thus this new MacGyver should be a reaction against the tropes of today. But that's not how Hollywood works. Look no further than Magnum P.I.'s reboot trailer. It looks EXACTLY the same as MacGyver, which looks EXACTLY the same as CSI, NCIS, and most of all the new Hawaii 50. Hollywood isn't looking for something original, they want something they grew up with and just make it into what is successful today. Does it work? Yep. Should it work? nope.
The old Macgyver had a soul to it, something mysterious and unique that the new one doesn't have. The new one is the same old dead thing they keep showing us in modern television, and this is coming from a 17 year old.
Couldn't agree more. The new one is just a common, modern action film with nothing special about it. I can't believe they actually replaced Pete with a younger girl! MacGyver isn't real without Pete and Mac's old bond! The old MacGyver was a masterpiece.
If you watch the old series from the first episode it did NOT have a soul... Mac was whiney and a horn dog... the show developed a soul over time.... Too many want this new reboot to hit the mark on day one...ridiculous...
Gina Marie Ok, fair enough, the episodes got better over time, that's true, but it was still good at the beginning, besides I don't see the new Macgyver getting better at all.
as I mentioned in a previous comment, I wrote for the series for 3 years. It went through a lot of changes. By the second season, they knew what they wanted the show to be. I started in season 3. It was originally going to be a sort of 'adventure of the week' show, but it evolved into basing his adventures around Pete and the Pheonix Foundation, which has loose government ties. Most of our best shows were just about MacGyver getting caught up in a situation without any agenda or set up. When in doubt we could always bring Murdoc back to fuck things up :)
I haven't watched the new macgyver much, because i understood from a trailer that it will be shit. But cmon they really changed Pete for some young blonde skunk?
I'm 13, nearly 14 but when I was younger Macgyver original was still on and I loved it sadly my sister hasn't found her box set of it yet. This roo kid sad
Most people who review the new macgyver are adults and remember the old one. But most people who watch it are younger and don't know much about it. It's a very clever show and it only gets bad credit from being compared to the old one.
+Shore Troopstar Clever? Not really... it just uses a more modern set of stereotypes to whack along its plot. Half of the time the episode's solution makes you cringe, like that train they claimed was traversing Germany and looked like a fucking 1950es set of locomotive and waggons from the US... We have got the ICE, a proper BULLET TRAIN, FFS! And they have cut down so much on MacGyver's little gadgets and "life hacks" that he barely seems necessary for most of the episodes, especially compared to Jack Dalton. It is too cheaply made for its own good (or the basic plot premise of "Yet another letter salad agency") and would look pathetic even if there was no 1980es original they sequelled it off of... I mean, just think... Phoenix Foundation WAS a think tank. Something we still have in 2017, so why go and change it to "an intelligence agency so secret that nobody ever has heard about it and MacGyver is the No 1 top field agent of"??? Or the film student / director wannabe he shares his flat with...and whom he can't tell who is he and what he really does...? Why did they think that would improve on the series? Basically the only thing I halfway enjoyed as a good script was the introduction of Murdock and that one just got badly cast... no real verve behind the acting, as if they had gottena cold dead fish and put some of the Andy Serkiss dots on him for motion control... In the beginning i thought "why did they name it MacGyver, every other name and it would look tons better for what they do with the idea... a little generic as a secret agent / thriller style TV show, but with what they seem to have of a budget it could be worse"... But nope, it just got worse and worse, by now the small degree of resemblance to Old Mac Gyver is about the only redeeming bit about the show and that the team has a halfway decent chemistry going on. You canot produce such a series when nobody on your staff knows the first thing about intelligence work or the military other than what they remember from movies they saw in their youth. You'll end up with a horrible messup of stereotypes and badly acted make belief soldiering or spywork. Just like MacGyver is right now.
i wholeheartedly agree with your comment. The focus of the new MacGyver seems to be more on being an action spy show where the teamwork brings them to their success, while in the old MacGyver it was the ingeniuity of one persons creative mind that saved the day. Only sometimes he had the support of others.
There is only one MacGyver and that’s RDA. I don’t know if this new MacGyver will last, I personally would have preferred something like, son of MacGyver, a Junior would be funny, then he gets to learn from his Dad (the real MacGyver played by RDA) and use that skill to be like him or at least try to be better than old Mac. Something like that.
I tried watching the new MacGyver but honestly it doesn't live up to the old one. RDA is just one of those irreplaceable actors in my book. The best thing about the show that you don't see anymore is he used his mind not violence when trouble raised. The old MacGyver's life was never revealed all at once like in the new one which left me anxious to see the next episode. I was 5 or 6 when the original MacGyver started and 12 or 13 when it ended. My grandfather was responsible for my love of the original show and I always watched each new episode with him. Even now when I watch the original MacGyver on Amazon I feel like I have gone back in time when everything was alot less chaotic. Long live the "original and only MACGYVER !"
I don’t recognize “new macgyver” as a thing…there is only one macgyver…and only ever will be. This isn’t like a James Bond thing where you can swap actors in or out.
Richard Dean Anderson was much better as an actor but is not about he was young in old classic series, but the whole concept in generic. In the new MacGyver we see the same CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) clones. All use new technology and all have to do with crimes and a police detective like movie. The old MacGyver was much different was something between Indiana Jones and Investigator. He always used unrelated things to disarm bombs or unlock keys. He used chocolates , milks, gums , ropes and no technology at all. They try to create a remake of the old good MacGyver but if it is yet another CSI, then we have fed up with lots of CSI variations already.
Tottally agree, when i saw the new macGyver, I felt it was the use of a Legendary name with a not so original concept that are just a melting pot of what is made today...
"Tough ball busting boss, comic relief, and female hacker..." this literally captures my disappointment in the remake. I was born after the 2000s but I watched the original MacGyver and was blown away. When I heard of a remake, I was excited, then realized it was nothing like MacGyver, and after watching 3 episodes of the remake the only thing in common the remake has with the original is the name.
Agreed with others here - the old version is far better. Quit being lazy writers and rebooting things for no other reason but nostalgia! It rarely works.
here's the problem. don't walk into watching the show, expecting it to be a mirror image of the older one. thats why it's fucking called a reboot. and time has changed so there has to be updates or else it looks stupid. stop comparing it and just watch the show.
Joseph Kolberg the first MacGyver was a great TV show so why not give it an update (which makes it easier for young generations to understand) to the new generation
as much as I like Mac2, Mac1 was the real MacGyver. His inventions were half believable, many of them would actually work in real life if you added the missing bits (to stop kids from making bombs from paper clips and heatsink paste), and there were some great gags, like when poor mac always ended up outside the plane whenever Jack Dalton was flying them away from a hostile scene. Some of the gadgets in Mac2, although cool, just wouldn't work. Season 3 ep 16 where mac wired the laser assembly from the LIDAR to a car battery to fake some sniper scopes on the bad guys wouldn't have worked, the diodes would have immediately popped. Not to mention the magnetron in a previous episode from the same series used to stop the military vehicles WONT run off 12 volts, it needs over 2000 volts at half an amp, and would have cooked poor macs fingers in the way he was holding the "directional" horn he made to focus the RF using the microwaves cover.
The gun thing is really what bothers me the most about the new McGyver. I also think it tells you a lot about how attitudes have changed in the past couple of decades in the U.S.
Old MacGyver HATED guns...something about his past. Like his kid died or his childhood friend...it’s been forever, so I don’t remember which. He wasn’t even that happy about making a downward pointing gunfire distraction generator, which he did at least twice.
most people are missing the point of the new macgyver, this about who he WAS when he actually worked with the phoenix foundation, which probably explains how he became the mac we all remember and love, who no longer worked for phoenix but apparantly couldn't do anything without him.
I completely agree with everything you said. But I do like the new macgyver. I hope it sticks around. I think they've got the tools to make a really good show, even if it's nothing like the original.
Old MacGyver was likeable because he was a "wholesome badass". Doesn't drink anything harder than carrot juice, doesn't curse or know how to punch anyone without having to shake out his hand after the impact... but he can still take down a whole army singlehandedly with a thumbtack and a packet of salt-free crackers. That's what made him interesting. New MacGyver lacks that "aw shucks" factor. We see him banging some chick within 30 seconds of the first episode. He's just a typical bro, and now he has a whole team of bros to bro it up some more. And what happened to the great, memorable music from the old one? It gave the show such flavor. A lot of fans can still hum some of the memorable tunes from Old MacGyver. Can anyone remember any music from this new one? Didn't think so. Way to rip the soul out of something beautiful, fellas.
what a coencidence. Lately I start missing to watch macgyver so i decided to buy macgyver DVD complete box online. I never knew there will be a new macgyver series. But no regrets cause im still enjoying the old one though.
Fan of both shows, for different reasons. Aside from a few similarities, Mac2 has become its own show, separate from Mac1, and is great in its own way. Lucas has grown into the character and his season 2 version is charming and fun to watch.
I don't like the new Macguyver nearly as much. The biggest issue I have with the new one is that its too goofy which makes it really hard to take seriously. It needs a more serious but optimistic tone like the original. I would like to see more Macguyver and less of the other cast no offense but the show is called Macguyver.
it really is so corny. like they are afraid to be too serious an because they might go too far and offend so they keep it light and hokey with a forced diverse and bloated cat to keep everyone happy. did they take murdocks balls? i can remember him caring enough to only assassinate bad guys. he was just so much of an actual threat to macgyver in the original series, but they give him an 'i only kill bad guys' dexter, dead pool or hitman's bodyguard vibe.
If you are in USA you can see Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Des Barres-Murdoc- together at the upcoming Rhode Island Comic Con in November this 2018.
The reason the old macgyver was so good is because we got to know MacGyver he had alot of mystery abit at first but then you could tell he was a compassionate man
alone that the new macgyver has to talk about what hes acomplished allready killed it for me and its just an insult that they reference the old macgyvers catch phrase of little of this little of that
Everyone Thursday old MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson everyone got a use that cos he was part of my childhood everyone prefers the original MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson don't believe in the original MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson everyone believes in him he's one of the bestest it was part of our child there's one of the RDA is one of the American sweethearts is everyone is really is packing up in the role of Angus and integrity in the role of Angus MacGyver truly gifted actor Richard Dean Anderson is really quickly in the role of Angus MacGyver and he thought of the nine and should get credibility for that and the name Angus for the Scottish heritage Richard in and get all the Hulk the credit for all the name of the show and it deserves that is a lovely man Richard Dean Anderson every watches original MacGyver today he's got it in the wrong loyal fan base RDA

I liked the old MacGyver, but I like the new MacGyver better. There were a lot of things that were pretty unrealistic on the old show that they fixed on the new one. A perfect example being improvised devices going off with split second timing. New MacGyver just says that he can't be sure when it's going to go off and incorporates that into his plan. Fair enough. MacGyver having military training completely makes sense and so does having a team of people helping him. It also has a more modern look which is appropriate for the time period it's set in. The old MacGyver would seem pretty dated if it was playing on television today. The new show retains the spirit of the old with some improvements. That's what reboots should do.
As a Person Born within the 21st century i constantly heard references and rememberings of mac1 on tv shows such as mythbusters (which i was a huge fan of) and within normal everyday life. so when mac2 came around it finnally gave me the chance to join the macgyver community and i feel it is geared alot to the younger audience who have never before heard or seen macgyver.
Old Macgyver is a legend for ever, but the New Macgyver is some kind of sweet and skinny masturbator. It is even shame to compare both TV Serries. Memories about old version in the childhood is too dear for me to watch new serries (I saw only episode 1).
1 episode? Not fair to judge then... The format and feel changed as the shows progressed though... I think the beginning was a bit of trial and error. Once the actors got comfortable and the audience used to their personalities, it gets better. New boss is fascinating, there's a recurring villain, some episodes actually got me emotional, the skinny masturbator gets more and more convincing... this surprised me as I am hardcore Mac1 fan... Don't expect reboot to be plot heavy and too sophisticated, it's on Friday prime time and targeted audience are families so they keep the show mostly light
Is this what I'm seeing? He's sort of like a casanova? The original MacGyver represented a more perspicuous and caring preservation to wildlife, the environment, human rights, etc. with a great deal of resourcefulness. If the writers are very pressed for time to get episodes on the air promptly, I hope they really get really good ideas on demonstrating the degree of intelligence and resourcefulness the original attempted to portray. The hype I sense with this new one is for an audience that wants to see more flare integrated with substance. Keeping substance by staying within the bounds on how the original character represented himself reflects on the real virtues meant to be portrayed, not necessarily what the audience would want. There needs to be more pull towards the philosophy on what the original character displayed in perceived terms of virtue with depth, not allow those things to be seen as just some other story or narrative.
I love the new MacGyver! I haven't seen the old one, but personally I am not really someone who watches old shows. From all the reviews, people haven't watched more than the first episode (of the reboot) and basing that episode to the, I don't know how many, episodes of the old version. I would say that basically all the other episodes are different from the way the first one goes. I love the cast and the dynamics between everyone. I love the twists and turns and suspense. Again I just love it all. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this show and I would possibly say that it is one of my favorites now. (and yes, I am serious about that) so, I would seriously consider giving another change, with fresh eyes, and not the old nostalgia that lots of you have. Okay bye
You refuse to watch the old ones yet trash people for not giving the new ones a honest chance? Fuckin hypocrite! Your parents should have been more serious about birth control options
Too young, too cool, too pretty. They should have hired the guy in this video to play Peter Thornton instead of a hot young woman. But actually, there's nothing wrong with this new series, it's rather the audience...
The old MacGyver was too pretty too... I think that we are all just too used to a more matured MacGyver but there shouldn't be anything wrong with a younger guy playing that character too. He's 27? Not 18. Kids can be pretty smart, especially in this information age... I think that this guy plays a believable MacGyver, season 2 sure proved that for me, especially when the show has established that he's a prodigy
chezzasan It's not about plausibility. All those changes mean that the audience has changed. For example, if the audience need Peter Thornton and Jack Dalton to be good-looking, something that they were really not in the first series, then what does that mean about the audience? In my opinion, it means something, and not something good.
What i like about the old series is that RDA's MacGyver look just like an unassuming guy in his mid-30's or early 40's who is more like he could be a a highschool teacher instead of a government spy, agent, etc.
I really don't get all those comments about the gun thing! The new MacGyver, too, is explicitly against using guns and hurting people. I never followed the old show, but started right of with the new one because I wanted something more up-to-date. Like I did with Hawaii 5-0, which I really enjoy, and I don't feel the need for the original. However, by now I have watched every episode of seasons 1, 2 and 3 and the first one of season 4 of the new MacGyver and could not really warm up to the show. That's why I watched this video to find out how it compares to the original, if it might be worthwhile to watch that instead. Since I didn't grow up with the old show, nostalgia wouldn't be enough of a reason. It is different with Magnum, I grew up with Tom Selleck as Magnum and love the charme of the original show, the new Magnum is unbearable for me (probably the same with the people who grew up with the old MacGyver and the new show). What I like about the new MacGyver: the idea of a genius as a hero instead of a "gun-slinger" (like in the series Scorpion, even more than one genius) who is saving good people and occasionally the world. I like that women have an equal share, but I don't like that they have become the majority towards the end of season 3. I like that Mac explains what he's going, so I'm learning something about chemistry and physics on the way (in the video it is criticed that a paperclip is named a paperclip, how else would you call it?). What I don't like: Lucas Till, he is too boyish for my taste and in the first two seasons I missed acting skills, there he seems to have almost always the same facial expressions, no matter if he's happy or sad or solved a case or lost a friend. Okay, he really got much better in seasons 3 and 4! But still.... And another thing I really don't like about the show: no matter how difficult the situation or the problem, it gets solved in 40 minutes, if need be even off-screen. You really don't need a long attention span to follow the show, that can be a good thing if you just want to squeeze in an episode before going to bed, but in the long run it's boring. This video has not helped me to see where the old show is better than the new one. But I found some comments helpful.
Original MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson everyone's childhood what you doing and some as part of everyone started everyday Hero is part of everyone's child have the original MacGyver RDA everyone puts the song Remember Me for the original MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson everyone remember the Iconic MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson loyal and bass everyone prefers original MacGyver from 1985 is part of everyone's childhood and his fantastic and the court the one of the fireman what Richard Dean Anderson daughter talk to you tonight he was one called the classic MacGyver 99 in the classic MacGyver cos he was a local fireman when was Gene Anthony 73 years old now B73 the original MacGyver RDA
Aaron Lauper the problem with your theory is that they are not trying to do something different. They are doing the same thing as the old one but worse. It's as if they took the old series and added whole new junk without any new ideas.
The original MacGyver is the best
@@king_unami1081 how hard have you hit your head
In the pilot he had a southern accent
No comparaison, the old MacGyver is better with original ideas...
Chennit Boualem Agreed
100% agreed! I watched MacGyver a lot in my early teens, no show can ever replace this one :)
old macgyver is better by far
And writing
I agree. The fact that MacGyver CHOSE not to use a gun is a core part of who the character is--and is the key reason for Mac's clever use of physics and chemistry that makes the show unique. To take that away in the reboot is to fundamentally change who the character is.
Richard dean anderson is a best MacGyver
GOAT
I loved grandpa MacGyver, giving good advice to his “Bub”. I bet the new show is NOT as wholesome. John Anderson was perfect for the part.
@@Charlotte-wp9rf its richard dean anderson
My advice would be to put the original out of your mind and enjoy the new one for what it is.
there is not an old....not a new MacGyver. MACGYVER IS ONE AND IS RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON.
flavius honorius emperor of rome 395-423 absolutely my friend knows Richard Dean Anderson and Michael dess barres
ave caesar!
Whatever man, new Macgyver is so dope, smh
The original showrunner wrote a pilot about MacGyver's son, but it wasn't very good and it didn't get picked up
What are you talking about? Hawaii 5-0 made Alex the original Steve MacGarrett, not his son and turned Kono into a hot young woman. When we first meet her, she is wearing a bikini, OK? Don't get me wrong; I like both versions, but to say that Hawaii 5-0 took the better route is hypocritical. Both shows were updated and populated with young hot people. Albeit, most of the Hawaii 5-0 cast is early 30's, but still Grace Park is young and very beautiful.
Well RDA wanted to come back if the new show was about same character but older (his real age) but studio wanted to make remake instead...
But ae get a dude with a cancer
One of my big issues with the new show is how Lucas Till is either being directed to portray him or has decided to portray him; with the emotional expression of an ant.
The robot in the show has a wider emotional expression range than what Till is showing.
Richard Dean Anderson would smile from ear to ear in good times, and show genuine worry at bad times - Lucas Till looks like a person whose face has been replaced with botox.
The old one was sooo good
The 1985 MacGyver, Richard Dean Anderson, is my hero. I am already 40yo, trying to be like him (in smartness) since my childhood. Been carrying a pocket knife everyday for 30ish years now.
the old macGyver had soul to it
1st McGyver will always be the One ~ OldschooL had Soul .. we had the besT !
i'm 15 and my life pretty much revolved around old MacGuyver and the new one don't got shit on the old one XD
making a reboot better doesn't consist of making everyone hot and better action scenes.
In my humble opinion, the old MacGyver was way better. Great review.
Nate M agreed
Same. The old one is still my favorite show EVER!
yeh the older mygyver fucking recks the new one
OF COUUURSE! The real MacGyver was superior in EVERY aspect.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Old one is the best
RICHARD ALWAYS WILL BE THE BEST
(whine, bitch whine...)
A note about the overly-white casting: Most of the show was shot in Vancouver.
I was so happy that I was sent a large BW photo after a month's wait...but this time the RDA's signature was different haha
you did a great job back in the day, things are really different right now and I'm still wondering how this new sh.t is ongoing..
Thanks for crafting a wonderful piece of many of our childhoods.
Richard Dean Anderson we love you. :)
I am 11 years old and while Macgyver was still on Netflix, I really liked it, so I guess middle aged people aren't the only ones who like Macgyver.
i love the old macgyver . nobody wil replace the old macgyver
A very intelligent and sanely stated opinion. Glad of the lack of numbwittery.
Aaron... you nailed it!
They are heroes of our, "boring" generation, let`s new generation invent theirs own heroes! )
Mac I 4 ever. Number 2 is lame.
I like the old MacGyver better because Richard Dean Anderson is the one and only MacGyver and he was made for the role :). I used to watch it all the time with my brother and dad when i was a kid and i have all the 7 seasons on dvd :)
I just don't like the new show , because something doesn't add up .
Omg same
Richard Dean Anderson is so good in MacGyver and then he did another classic right after with Jack Oniell in Stargate Sg1.
If anything old MacGyver was kind of cranky.
OLD MACGYVER! OLD MACGYVER! OLD MACGYVER!
Who agrees that the old one is better?
Yep. Should it work? nope.
Garbage new macgyver, he doesnt have the cool mullet and you cant hear him thinking while he's rigging up a plan
Old one didn't hear him thinking after season 2 either
Same age as you, it's a great show! The whole show is on Netflix!
AvTraveller well now I have the box set and finished the first season
MrCanopatatoes UA-cam yay! Netflix Is taking it off in a month so I'm gonna have to get the box set too!
In the trailer he protected himself from bullets with a cake plate, also Mac was always that kinda lone guy and not in a generic team.
Not gonna watch
Thought the same, but had nothing to do recently so I actually started watching till season 2... surprisingly, show got better and better
richard is the best ..macgyver
old MacGyver best one
Dan Frode Bakken can't agree more
İ agree
Amen
Most people who review the new macgyver are adults and remember the old one. But most people who watch it are younger and don't know much about it. It's a very clever show and it only gets bad credit from being compared to the old one.
if you like drama.
I agree
It's just another souless tv series that tries too hard and tries to cash in on old series.
+Shore Troopstar
Clever?
As they say if a show ain't broken don't reboot it
There is only one MacGyver and that’s RDA.
This isn’t like a James Bond thing where you can swap actors in or out.
old MacGyver is the best!
Richard Dean Andersen was awesome in Macgyver but amazing in Stargate
the old MacGyver is so much better then the new.
Richard Dean Anderson est le meilleur acteur de MacGyver est il le restera pour toujours!!!!
On est tous avec toi Richard !!!!
I watched some of the new Macgyver.
Jack Dalton was the responsible one on their team.
How in the holy hell could they screw it up that bad?
The original macgyver shows he cares, teaches and has humour and maturity. 21st Macgyver does not compare.
I hated the Idea of it being remade at first then i gave it a watch It's actually pretty good
Tottally agree, when i saw the new macGyver, I felt it was the use of a Legendary name with a not so original concept that are just a melting pot of what is made today...
Classic MacGyver 1985. Much better ✌️
old MacGyver better !!!!!!!!!!
Woody Pecker yes that it
"Tough ball busting boss, comic relief, and female hacker..." this literally captures my disappointment in the remake.
It rarely works.
i love the old macgyver, i like the new macgyver as well.. it's more up to date and a fun new spin on the character we all love
here's the problem. don't walk into watching the show, expecting it to be a mirror image of the older one. thats why it's fucking called a reboot. and time has changed so there has to be updates or else it looks stupid. stop comparing it and just watch the show.
Joseph Kolberg the first MacGyver was a great TV show so why not give it an update (which makes it easier for young generations to understand) to the new generation
Nobody wants to watch it lel.
as with any classic 80's show they are far better than the SH*T that is pumped out on crap TV today......period!
as much as I like Mac2, Mac1 was the real MacGyver.
MacGyver was a loner. He didn't need a team to help him out.
old Mc Gyver the best!
Old Macgyver is best.ahh my childhood.Love u Richard Dean Andersen.😊😊
most people are missing the point of the new macgyver, this about who he WAS when he actually worked with the phoenix foundation, which probably explains how he became the mac we all remember and love, who no longer worked for phoenix but apparantly couldn't do anything without him.
Old macGyver the best!!
I like the old macgiver
Come to think of it, hes right. The new one is no different to NCIS, CSI MIAMI and all that other crap.
Boring and Dime a dozen
It's terrible. I would have given it a chance if they had given the old theme music a modern update, but they didn't even do that.
aaronimpactnz the beginning was the same for about 5 seconds then the rest is somewhat original.
Yes they did. They paid homage to the original theme music in the beginning and like what MusicalRose said, the composition after that is new
what a coencidence. Lately I start missing to watch macgyver so i decided to buy macgyver DVD complete box online. I never knew there will be a new macgyver series. But no regrets cause im still enjoying the old one though.
MacGyver series ends at charming RDA..no one compete with his charisma and magic in playing that character.
Fan of both shows, for different reasons. Aside from a few similarities, Mac2 has become its own show, separate from Mac1, and is great in its own way. Lucas has grown into the character and his season 2 version is charming and fun to watch.
If you look closely in the frist episode the pilot he did shot a gun before he jumped off the mountain
Original Macgyver Is The Best Ever
The reason the old macgyver was so good is because we got to know MacGyver he had alot of mystery abit at first but then you could tell he was a compassionate man
I love watching the old Macgyver with my grandma, but in my opinion the new one is better
No comparison. Hands down original was much better although the new show cast is good.
alone that the new macgyver has to talk about what hes acomplished allready killed it for me and its just an insult that they reference the old macgyvers catch phrase of little of this little of that

Prefer the 80's MacGyver. The Best
Okay bye
You advice us not to review films based on "old nostalgia" while you admittedly have the bias for the opposite?
You refuse to watch the old ones yet trash people for not giving the new ones a honest chance? Fuckin hypocrite! Your parents should have been more serious about birth control options
the new macgyver has cast way way too young.

Thanks for making video, even though I’m 14 I love the original
Aaron Lauper the problem with your theory is that they are not trying to do something different. They are doing the same thing as the old one but worse. It's as if they took the old series and added whole new junk without any new ideas.
