    As sad as this song/video is, it actually saved his dad's life. His dad donated a kidney when he was younger, and later developed stage 4 kidney disease. They were unable to find him a doner. Then a distant relative seen this video and came forward as a doner for him. Such a great story. Great reaction!! 😊

      Not quite true. The donor was located before the video for the song came out. When they shot the video, they knew a donor was available. The story you tell is oft repeated, but not quite true. Its also often told that the video was shot in one take with no edting because James didn't want it to be too hard for the dad. In reality, it wasn't done in a single take AND it was actually the dad who comforted James several times, telling him "don't be so emotional, we know I'm not dying now".

    The lines about two grown men saying goodbye came from their days in the British military. James was a captain, and his father was a colonel in the army. When they would deploy, they would say that to one another to avoid getting emotional in front of others.

    I’m glad you noticed the arm pat at the very end (a lot of people pause the video before that point) because it adds another layer to the emotion. While it is an incredibly difficult time for James’ father (having terminal kidney disease), it’s still a parent’s instinct to want to comfort their child.

    • @andrewmoss1753

      @terminallumbago6465 Did you notice the nod from James to his dad when to do the arm pat.
      It was rehearse, nothing wrong with that but rehearsed

    • @ForeverDegenerate
      @ForeverDegenerate Місяць тому +7

      @@andrewmoss1753 There was nothing rehearsed. That was the first time James' Dad had heard the song. What we saw in that music video was Jame's Dad's legit reaction to the song and James' own legit reaction to singing it for the first time to and for his dad. The nod from James was James acknowledging the gesture.

  • @Wrathlon
    @Wrathlon Місяць тому +63

    As soon as I saw the title I was like "Ooh boy lets see how long she lasts before she cries". I genuinely dont know how he got through this song, god that must have been hard because yeah that IS is his Dad and when filming this his dad had terminal kidney disease. The video actually caused a distant relative to get tested and was a match and he survived but this was him singing goodbye to his Dad for real.
    Its especially powerful because they are both british military men who were raised with the stiff upper lip mentality so this sort of vulnerability is usually unspoken and just understood.
    I saw this video not long after losing my dad and it was fucking brutal ;_;

    I heard this song about 1 month after my father passed. I can honestly say I lived this song with my father the last two months of his life. We knew his days were numbered and we moved him into my home for those last two months. I folded his clothes for the next day every night and put them on the corner of his bed. I was the last one each night to turn his light off. I hugged him each and every night and told him I loved him and he in turn repeated his love for me too. Challenging, but the best two months with my Dad before he passed!

I have no idea how James managed to get through it without completely breaking down, even though we can clearly see his tears. Just an afterthought, I heard James donated all the proceeds from this video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much fantastic work for ex-servicemen & women. What a guy. ❤ 🙋‍♂

    You hit the nail on the head about the "his dad being sick at the moment." - his dad was struggling with disease in his remaining kidney, after having donated one earlier in life, and James wrote this song while they weren't sure if he was going to be approved for a transplant.
    He's since gotten that transplant and recovered, but as this was written he felt like they might actually be saying goodbye, and his dad was facing the fear of his mortality, hence the lyrics.

    I lost both of my parents in 2022. I was trying to graduate from university at the time and then I losth both of them during the year. It changes you. Suddenly things that used to matter so much became irrelevant. For instance the day of my eventual graduation was a day like any other. I did not celebrate, did not feel grateful or proud. It was a day like any other. I just got the degree in hand, put it on the shelf and continued working. Things that I used to take for granted like simply their presence became the most important things in the world. Their momory, all they did and gave in our short time together. I now understood why old people look at pictures of their loved ones.
    Many things I regret, things I did not do and did not say in time. Things I wish I would've done differently. Life hasn't felt the same since then. I feel emptiness inside me, that something is missing and maybe it is that love that my parents used to be able to afford me and that which I no longer have in my life anymore. But I do miss them a lot. What wouldn't I give to see them one more time. To hear their laughs one more time. To be able to hug them one more time. I miss you mom & dad, hope you are well, wherever you are!

    Very British. "just two grown men saying goodbye" was how his father (senior officer) would sent his son off to deploy on active service with NATO Kosovo. Brits really don't public displays of affection. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and no donar, his father had only months. James wrote this, one raw, single take with his father sitting next to him - he had never heard the song - and boy does he look uncomfortable. But it worked - the song found a distant relative, and doner, and it resulted in a happy ending.

    I didn't know anything about this song the first time I heard it, and I think there's 3-4 different ways to read it, depending on how literally you take "I'm not your son" and his father being there in the video at the end. Eventually I learned the whole story about why it was written and the end result. At the same time my dad had been diagnosed with incurable cancer and was awaiting a liver transplant, so this song absolutely destroyed me. My dad got his transplant earlier this year and is doing very well, and is now cancer-free. Either way, I think this song is beautiful and I wish James Blunt got the recognition he deserves.

    Most reacters stop before that last arm clasp, as they want their response to be "instant" hmmmm,

    I never got to say goodbye to my Dad. We had a good relationship but he was taken way to young and I regret to this day the things I never told him. The Silver Lining? I now tell everyone that means anything to me that I love them. Time is short. Do it. Apologize if you think you need to.

    I'd recommend turning off captions. The instinct to read ahead spoils the intended impact of how words are spoken/delivered.

      @Eddie-f1h I only meant it in jest. It's not so much validation as it is vicarious pleasure. Watching reactions is the closest I can get to enjoying something for the first time all over again.
