I like the ripped clouds along with the card dragged to make the water. I think with the water the dragging affect with the white shoes more white shading the way water looks. Love your videos!

Great tutorial Jon, I think there is a right time for both styles of making water.... depends on what effect you want for the painting. I use both card and fingers. I think the card effect shows waves better. As for the clouds both work great

I like the water idea on the left but I think the ripped clouds are less ridged than the their ones, therefore more soothing. It does really depend on what you are going for though

Really nice! I love the ripped stencil with the finger smeared water. I'm experimenting on my cellar walls with different kinds of effects. I will try big clouds like this on a wall I just painted blue! I was looking for ideas on how to spray clouds. You da MAN! Thanks

Awesome Jon... both styles of clouds and water are a great wayto make'em.. and it all depends on what you're background gonna be for which effect you'll want to use in your picture... 👌💯
Excellent tutorial. I think the clouds look better possibly on the left, and the water shimmering reflections looking better on the right. My only constructive input is for the cloud edges to look softer, and the water shimmer to have larger vertical spaces per horizontal stagger nearer the view, the further out the water being the more dense (as shown). Question, how would you go about spray painting water spray from a water riot cannon? You know, how that powerful stream of water looks, but on the outer edges it would be more like a garden sprinkler? As in two forms of water spray - riot cannon, and softer around it as it disperses.
Hi Johnny, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback, suggestions and question I really appreciate it :) I've never gave it a thought till now but i would most probably spray a white line in the middle as the water is more dense in the centre has it comes out, and as it gets further away from the cannon i would start to mist it out as the water is more apart then, i would also mist the top and bottom of the line but not all the way back to the cannon tho, i would leave a tiny gap with just a white line as it comes out of the cannon, hope this makes sense :)

The brand of spray paint i use is Montana, hope this helps :)
Hi floridatom58, No problem , happy to help, What i would do first is rub the wood down with sandpaper to take all the rough parts out , then either give it a couple of coats of base colour like black or white or what ever colour you are going to use the most in the painting or you could put a couple of coats of clear coat on it to seal it , but then i would leave it 24 hours for it to dry before starting to paint on it hope this helps :)
I like the torn clouds they look more natural . Have you ever taken and after you’ve torn the card then burn the edges slightly with a torch ? I believe it makes for an even more natural look . I like the fingers for this pic . I suppose if it were a lake scene with a windy setting the caes wisp back and forth would be better in that situation . Just my two cents love your work !!

I know it sounds silly, but I would be willing to pay for you to post me your cloud template you made with your knife...I could never do that...probably because I don't have the patience for the cutting all those 'ups and downs'. I'm good with the ripping one....lol...this is a serious comment... Also you should make them and then sell stencils... I looked online to 'cheat' and they all look amimated... beautiful work!! Hi Laura, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment and question I really appreciate it :) Yes i still use montana white when i do my tutorials :) The difference between the white and the gold is that the white is high pressure and is a gloss finish and is a thinner paint and is cheaper but can still work really well when doing spray paint art, The gold is low pressure has a semi-gloss finish, it's a thicker paint, it drys faster but cost a bit more. To be honest i like using them both but i use the gold more has there's a lot more choice of colours in that range then the white. hope this helps :)
Hey Jon I have trouble with some colors not wanting to be covered. Like light blue will come through black. I use the rusto 2x ultra cover. What do you recommend?
Hi Gareth, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback and question i really appreciate it :) The transparent blue was used to add a bit of colour back in to the clouds and give them some layers so they were not all white also you don't get as much over spray from a transparent paint as you would from a normal colour. hope this helps :)

I am doing spray painting currently, and whenever I try to do a lake / river etc., using my fingers, it all blends into one colour and doesn’t really look nice. Is there a reason why it is doing this or is it me? I am using acrylic, so that could be it. Love your work by the way, forgot to mention.
Hi Frosty, Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback and question i really appreciate it :) I used acrylic base spray paint for this tutorial, you may be putting to much paint down so when you move your fingers across it all mixes up to much, try using less paint and when you rub your fingers across go from side to side and only go over the same area once. hope this helps :)

Hi Hazel, It all depends how you put the paint down and what technique you use to make the water. one way you can do it is start with the darkest colours on each side and then put a light colour next to them and then a lighter colour and so on till both sides meet in the middle then spray a white line in the middle then use your finger to and move across the paint to mix the colours together a bit , it's a bit hard to explain when writing it , but i have done a video tutorial where i show two ways of making water the link to that is ua-cam.com/video/RBPNX9qDaHc/v-deo.html maybe this will help more as you can see me doing it. What is the proper distance to hold the cloud stencil ? Stain or gloss paint normally ?

do you still use montana white spray cans ---what is the difference between the synthetic paint to the regular spray paint?
Hi Laura, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to leave this comment and question I really appreciate it :) Yes i still use montana white when i do my tutorials :) The difference between the white and the gold is that the white is high pressure and is a gloss finish and is a thinner paint and is cheaper but can still work really well when doing spray paint art, The gold is low pressure has a semi-gloss finish, it's a thicker paint, it drys faster but cost a bit more. To be honest i like using them both but i use the gold more has there's a lot more choice of colours in that range then the white. hope this helps :)

Hey Jon I have trouble with some colors not wanting to be covered. Like light blue will come through black. I use the rusto 2x ultra cover. What do you recommend?

Hi Gareth, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback and question i really appreciate it :) The transparent blue was used to add a bit of colour back in to the clouds and give them some layers so they were not all white also you don't get as much over spray from a transparent paint as you would from a normal colour. hope this helps :)

I am doing spray painting currently, and whenever I try to do a lake / river etc., using my fingers, it all blends into one colour and doesn’t really look nice. Is there a reason why it is doing this or is it me? I am using acrylic, so that could be it. Love your work by the way, forgot to mention.
Hi Frosty, Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment, feedback and question i really appreciate it :) I used acrylic base spray paint for this tutorial, you may be putting to much paint down so when you move your fingers across it all mixes up to much, try using less paint and when you rub your fingers across go from side to side and only go over the same area once. hope this helps :)

Whenever I try to make the water, all of my paints just mix into one color... I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong :(

Hi Hazel, It all depends how you put the paint down and what technique you use to make the water. one way you can do it is start with the darkest colours on each side and then put a light colour next to them and then a lighter colour and so on till both sides meet in the middle then spray a white line in the middle then use your finger to and move across the paint to mix the colours together a bit , it's a bit hard to explain when writing it , but i have done a video tutorial where i show two ways of making water the link to that is ua-cam.com/video/RBPNX9qDaHc/v-deo.html maybe this will help more as you can see me doing it.
