- When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. because it's mislabeled in genre..it should be classified as a comedy. In 1976, tree-hugger scientists predicted an ice age by the year 2000. Well, Im still waiting. Junk science. And even if something happens, the arrogance of humans thinking they can control the entire atmosphere is such a huge arrogance and a joke. Comedy.

I disagree. Everything is cg and the story is weak. I know that movies aren't supposed to be accurate but nothing is correct. I know there's no volcano under LA but at least they knew that fire is hot. There is literally nothing true or correct in this movie.

If you like disaster movies like this, try Volcano, which is set in L.A. Seeing the tornados tearing L.A. apart in this reminded me of that one. another great and underrated disaster film. That and The Core is also a great one :D
and of all these environmental scare tactic movies, Volcano is the only one close to being almost reality. The rest are nothing but scare tactics by the left tree huggers. To be clear, I was 10 years old when the same group of "scientists" predicted an ice age by 2000 and that was in 1976. So people are so gullible, they keep getting scared into believing this tripe.

I love this movie for how real it actually feels. There's only a few disaster movies that do that.
yopu been drinking the wrong koolaid. lol. I thought it was a comedy. The "science" is the worst kind of tripe. I can take a guess at your age so let me clue you in..these "scientists" are the exact same group that swore up and down in 1976 that we would have an ice age by the year 2000. Well? Where is it? It's been nearly 50 years since that ridiculous prediction by people who dont really care about the environment asa whole, they only care how it affects their little habitat and how they might be inconvenienced. There is nothing humans can do to affect/change the atmosphere. That is the arrogance of mankind. We arent sh1t in the grand scheme and to think we are is so self-centered that it aint funny.

The earthquakes in San Andreas felt incredibly real, especially the restaurant scene.
Strange why there aren't very many Environmental movies out there. This movie needs a sequel.

This film is very underrated. Highly entertaining. I've never been bored rewatching it. 10 times I think. I Highly recommend DENNIS QUAID in INNER SPACE and FREQUENCY. Both are unforgettable movies.

You definitely deserve for people to take 2 seconds and give you a sub. You’re channel is a rare find. Yes, there are thousands of movie reaction channels but you are one of the needle in a haystack ones who have actually never seen movies in your life. Most just lie about it being the first time watching but we can usually tell the difference.
You’re great at getting invested in the movies and it absolutely comes across in a genuine way and people appreciate that for sure. Keep it up, you’re doing great. You’ll be at 20k in no time.

According to NOAA, seawater freezes at about 27.4 degrees F so not much different than freshwater. Water with the highest saturation of salt possible would freeze at -6 degrees according to an article from University of Illinois. So you could certainly still survive in that kind of weather if you were wearing enough clothing.
The difference is the volume. Water freezes at 32 degrees, but lakes don't freeze even at negative temperatures unless it stays that low for a long time. The temperatures to freeze the ocean fast enough to watch it freeze...you're not surviving that outside.

Trivia for The Day After Tomorrow:
1. Released in 2004, directed by Roland Emmerich; screenplay by Roland Emmerich and Jeffrey Nachmanoff.
2. A different writer, Michael Wimer, basically "auctioned" the script off to any film studio willing to take it on. Studios had 24 hours to accept the terms, one of which was that Emmerich would direct no matter what. Fox Studios was the only one willing to put in a bid.
3. Twentieth Century Fox did a private screening for many scientists to see what their critiques would be. Most said it wasn't scientifically accurate, but was still entertaining. NASA scientists turned down requests to be consultants because of the inaccuracies.
4. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone obtained a copy of the script and planned to do an exact, word-for-word version of their own, except with puppets. The idea was eventually scrapped, but the weather concept was later re-worked into an episode of the show called "Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow," and they also did "Team America: World Police" as a feature film with puppets.
5. If I am reading it correctly, The Day After Tomorrow has the highest opening-weekend box office gross for a film that never reached #1 in the U.S. at any time during its run. It's still the highest grossing movie ever filmed in Canada (largely in Toronto and Montreal). And it was the sixth-highest grossing film for 2004.
6. The two teams playing in the soccer game on the TV are Manchester United and Boca Juniors. It was a real game that took place in August 2002, with Manchester United winning 2-0. The player scoring was Ruud van Nistelrooy of the Netherlands.
7. For actors previously seen on the channel, Sela Ward (Dr. Lucy Hall) was the murdered wife in The Fugitive, Ian Holm (Terry, the oceanographer) was the priest in The Fifth Element, Glenn Plummer (Luther, the man with the dog in the library) was Tuneman, the "Oh shit! Oh shit!" driver in Speed, and Jake Gyllenhaal (Sam) was Billy Crystal's son in City Slickers. And Dennis Quaid, who plays Dr. Jack Hall, is the real-life brother of Randy Quaid, who was the crop dusting pilot in Independence Day, which was also directed by Roland Emmerich.
8. This is probably the most well-known film role for Arjay Smith, who played Brian. He's done more TV work, most notably on "24," and 1990s kids might recognize him from the Nickelodeon show "The Journey of Allen Strange" as the title character.

Thanks for all the info! Dennis Quaid is great even in his early movies like: "The Right Stuff" (1983) A very GOOD movie about test pilots and USA Space Astronauts.
My favorite Dennis Quaid movie is "The Rookie", a great baseball movie based on a true story. He also played a great Doc Holiday in "Wyatt Earp" staring Kevin Costner. His brother Randy was also Cousin Eddie in National Lampoons "Vacation" and "Christmas Vacation". Both are very talented actors but unfortunately randy went a little bonkers and tried the Sov Citizen thing and didnt pay his taxes and went on the run.
As somebody living in Florida (who doesn't handle heat well) when this movie came out, I was so excited we'd have a winter lol

As A New Yorker who has lived in Manhattan now for 25 years (33 years just about including Queens), and this movie is a darn fun disaster film for me! It's fun anyhow, but seeing specific NYC locations is always fun in film.
I feel like NY gets destroyed a lot. I remember it in Avengers too

Actually, when I lived in New England it was not uncommon for the fishermen to walk out on the frozen salt water in the harbor with chain saws to cut their boats out. It depends on depth and movement. Still salt water will freeze several feet in cold, but not deadly, temperatures.
The shots of the buildings covered in snow/ice were pretty incredible!
“Gigantic holes” - dude, a six inch hole in a million square miles??? 1/1000th of a pin prick.
I really liked this movie when it first came out because it was very different from all the other types of end of the world movies that were out at that time.

You should see Dennis Quaid again in Frequency and Inner Space, Jake Gyllenhaal again in Brokeback Mountain and Spider-Man Far from Home, Emmy Rossum again in Phantom of the Opera.
This is one of my favorite natural disaster movies. Volcano and Dante’s Peak and GeoStorm and Deep Impact are great disaster movies. Disaster movies are one of my favorite movie genres

I loved Deep Impact. One of the best disaster movies period. Armageddon got all the hype that year because of Aerosmith and Bruce Willis but Deep Impact was so much more grounded and realistic with superb writing and acting. Armageddon just felt like a live action cartoon.

There is a book based on this movie and in the book, in the end, humanity is trying to reduce the ice during summer months, using black paint and explosives. They believe that if enough ice and snow is removed, then the climate can recover and return to normal, but if they fail then the next winter will add even more snow and ice and it will turn into a runaway effect, plunging the planet into an ice age.
I love the movie but I never understood why they didn't burn any of those wooden tables or chairs. There's tons of them.

It's one of my favorites. I really don't get why the ratings are so bad for it. I see some people saying that it's not scientifically accurate, but it's highly entertaining and that's what makes a good movie.

Hey James first I just want to say you have the cutest laugh. And I enjoy watching your reactions. Of course I have a couple of suggestions. Logan's run, Tootsie, shall we dance the newer version. Stella with Bette midler, volcano with Tommy Lee Jones, and jingle all the way with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Well that was a little bit more than a couple😅
Unless I am mistaken, this film still has the highest grossing opening weekend to not be #1 in the box office that weekend. It grossed over $85M but still lost to Shrek 2, which scored $94M (if I remember).
The desalination of the North Atlantic is a real thing. The time table is in the hundred year range. What Emmerich did was take the model which can lead to a future ice age, yes, and put it on way fast foward and push the effects.

Yeah the only reason their drilling caused the shelf to break off was because the ice was already melting underneath it.

And as far as it goes, what you said may be some of the most intelligent things ever spoken about climate change.
Anthropogenic climate change has its name for a reason...because it is human induced and their is really no doubt about it. Simple concept, we release more CO2 and other greenhouse gases, the atmosphere then absorbs more heat. So yes, most of todays climate change is being caused by humans.

You should watch the movie *2012* released in 2009 about worldwide catastrophes at the end of the 5,126-year-long cycle of the Mayan (Mesoamerican) Long Count calendar.
May not be completely accurate as it was made in 2009 (and they didn't know exactly what the year 2012 would hold, and turns out they were incorrect, fortunately), but not a bad disaster flick.

I love this movie. I think all the actors are excellent! I just saw a UA-cam video saying that the oscillation south of Greenland has started having problems. I think most of the scientific problems say the events are happening way to fast but the way the climate is changing? Maybe not. A great pick and no one does it!
If you want to see more of Dennis Quaid, I would recommend "Dreamscape" and "Innerspace," two very different films, but worth watching.

Thanks for subbing! I've actually answered this a couple of times during my unboxing/Q&A sessions. I'm a huge fiction person and lean toward sci-fi and very much perfer audiobooks at this point. Try "The Fold" by Peter Clines. Also "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir (He also wrote "The Martian") This book won audio book of the year and fantastic. My kids said they are already looking to make it into a movie.

Consider checking out the 2006 disaster movie Poseidon (an ambitious reboot of the 70s flick The Poseidon Adventure) about a cruise liner that gets flipped by a rogue wave while at sea. I bring it up because 1) it's a natural disaster movie, and 2) Emmy Rossum is in that one as well ❤🌊
You mentioned that you have read a lot of books, wondering if you have read "the coming global superstorm" by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber, which this movie is based on.
He's a terrible weatherman. He should have predicted how long the storm would last and tell his son to hang on for that long. He reached him just as the sun came out, didn't do anything, just got the old guy killed in the Mall.

@@AwesomeUSMovies Dennis Quaid who played the dad in this movie is the younger brother of Randy Quaid who played the crazy pilot in Independence Day. Both are great actors with some great movies though Randy always plays more supporting roles while Dennis has a lot more starring roles. For another great Dennis Quaid movie I'd suggest Dragonheart (1996). For Randy Quaid I'd suggest Vegas Vacation (1997) since you've already watched Christmas Vacation.

A visually beautiful movie. Probably the best movie poster and when it got nearer to the cinema release date everyone was very excited. I even had that digital movie countdown keyring. 2004 was a good year indeed. I watched it 13 times in the cinema, had the 2 disc special edition DVD too. Great fun.

They recently released a report in Nature Communications from a Professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark saying that the North Atlantic Current could collapse in the next 2 years. Not sure things will go exactly as the movie portrayed or quite as fast but the point is we just don’t know for sure what will happen. Also, just saw yesterday; like 100 Dolphins in the Amazon were found dead after water temps reached 102degrees. I just experienced almost 3 months of triple digit temperatures coupled with a severe drought. I don’t know if the Texas grid can take another summer like the one we just had.

You know, when we all watched these movies to begin with long ago, we knew at least a little bit going in that we made a choice based on. Like, am I going to see a comedy, drama, sports movie, war movie, etc.? I’ve always been a supporter of the idea of a reactor at least knowing what kind of film they’re going to watch so they can be in the right mood when they do. I’ve seen reactors treat dramas like comedies, for example, and it totally ruined it.
Actually, California experiences several tornados every year. They tend to be smaller (typically F1-F3) and of shorter duration, often out over water (water spouts), but they do occur-including in LA and San Diego.
Humans are major contributors to climate change. Individual humans don't make a huge impact, but billions of us working in tandem have a significant effect.) There are multiple cycles to the Earth when it comes to climate. Short term (like the 7-year El Nino/la nina cycle), mid-term (100-500 year cycles) and long term cycles (thousands to tens, or even 100s of thousands of years). Currently those combined Earth cycles would have us in a cooling trend right now. So if temperatures are going up this fast in a cooling period, imagine what is going to happen when the Earth shifts back into a warming period.

Tbh I think I’ve been in more tornado warnings in Miami (due to hurricanes) than since I moved to Des Moines 5 years ago! But Iowa weather is the most erratic of all the places I’ve been for sure!!!

This was a great film but I don’t see it getting much fanfare these days. Everyone was amazing in it and the effects really hold up.
I saw someone recommend Volcano and I second that.
Regardless of political stripes, I genuinely believe that humans should not be wasteful, reuse, repurpose, recycle, and conserve resources as much as possible.
In my own life, I keep a box in the garage of washed cans and bottles for a variety reuses and if something isn’t used by the next season, it gets either given away or recycled. You can do a lot with old prescription pill bottles, like extra buttons, travel seasonings (I like chili powder), travel sewing kit. Old Altoid tins are perfect for pocket or purse first aid kits. Even those daily pill trays can be made into a lipstick pallette. I've even turned old stick deodorant cans into bar shampoo holders for my kid and even saved those leftover deodorant platforms in order to make a whole new can of deodorant; that's what those plastic caps on top of them are for, to scrape the remnants to be smooshed together as additional product!
It's the little things that you can do at home that can ease up on consumption and save a little money.
I like seeing people enjoy this movie. I remember people used to hate on it for just being another disaster movie.

Over the top like most disaster movies. But what makes you feel extra tense even today. Is that, such changes ARE happening. Just not instantly. Ignoring it won't change anything.
You always start your introduction that you were an Iowa farm boy and only had 3 tv channels. I was a child of the 70s and 80s and up to the end of the 70s we too only had 3 channels. Im from Jacksonville FL the largest city in the continental US. In 1980 we were the first family on the block to get cable TV

We know that volcanoes are not the cause of climate change because the carbon isotopes ratio is very different from what we observe in the atmosphere.
